I'd rather be at work! Visited: April 2008 |

I had visited Dominican Republic once before, and received high quality service.
Let me start off by saying my room was very dirty. The bathroom needed a good scrubbing. The beds were awful, and the sheets were not changed.
Also, the TV never worked, and the hotel asks you to sign out a remote control!
I am from New York, and it felt just like it when I visited the pool there. And forget about getting any peace - the peddlers keep harassing you to buy stuff.
Also, the food was not so great - when I was able to get some. I thought the tours were a rip off - big time! They had me believing we were going to watch the sun set. We actually saw the "hood". It was a horrible experience.
Lastly, (but not least!) the hotel service was the worst. They never spoke English, and had the nerve to be rude.
Once again, I would rather have been at work instead of the Barcelo Talanquera! For any one who may be interested in coming to this shack - don't! |

I can't express how angry I am about my stay at Talanquera. It was the most horrible stay I ever encountered.
Let me start with the room. They weren't clean at all, and the bathroom was digusting. The bed was not comfortable at all, either.
The hotel service was no help. They were not welcoming at all. We had to fight for them to move our room. Once they did that, the room was just as bad as the first one.
I wouldn't recommend anyone to stay here. |

I would give this place a negative star if it would let me.
This place was the most horrible place I've ever stayed in. The pictures that were shown were non-existent. The rooms were musty, and the air conditioning did not work.
Also, the employees acted like they hated Americans and Europeans. It seemed like they were doing guests a favor.
It was not all-inclusive. We had to pay to eat in certain areas - and that was not advertised.
In addition, security did not respond when I had items stolen from my room. The management did nothing, either - except to say "Too bad - sorry".
It appeared they had an open door policy, too. Anyone could come off the street for the day. We did not even get to use the pool because of the behavior of the people they let in. They also raided the buffet like they hadn't eaten in days.
I suggest you save your time, aggravation and sanity, and stay away from this hotel. You been warned! |

My fiance and I had an overall great time.
The pool and beach were great. The staff was friendly, and the entertainment at night was good.
The rooms could use some renovations. However, overall, we had a great experience. |

We stayed here for six days in February. The resort itself was okay for what we paid. However, the rooms were horrible, the food was blah, and the drinks- well, drink many, as you will need it to survive.
After visiting, I will never return to this island again. It was dirty with trash everywhere. The resort was kept clean, but go behond the gate and you will see how dirty it is.
I also don't suggest you buy any tours, as they are a rip off. The beach was okay. The vendors will bug you to death. They really need to keep those vendors off the beach and out of the hotel.
We took two tours: the horse back ride and fishing. What a joke.
They showed us a photo of what we were going to get, and it read we'd get this and that. We were lucky to get back alive!
Clean up the island, get rid of the vendors, and fire all the hotel tour guides (or at least make them give what they charge you for).
This was my first bad vacation in 25 years! |

This hotel was absolutely awful. Do not waste your money and listen to reviews that tell you it is "down to earth". I'm a college student, and have stayed at student hostels and cheap motels before, and this place was absolutely awful.
First off, it was very crowded, especially during the weekends when locals invaded the place. We are basically crowded out of the amenities we paid for!
Good luck finding a spot by the pool. The beach was tiny, and quaint, but don't expect any peace and quiet there! The vendors bothered us non stop every two minutes to sell you some crap. One had the audacity to wake me up from my nap to try to sell me cigars.
Also, the food was absolutely disgusting. Get familiar to the sight of old hot dogs. The restaurants on the complex were awful as well. And on the weekends when the locals invade, good luck getting a table!
On top of all this, the staff was extremely rude. I suggest you avoid this place at all costs. Even if you are on a budget, you can find a better place! |

Having traveled to Jamaica several times, I expected something similar. I could not have been more wrong.
The hotel was clean enough for the price. However, we had two rooms on the beach. Neither phone worked. We reported it two times, and a week later they still didn't work.
We had to bribe housekeeping to get the water in the fridge replaced, and the front desk staff seemed to have no idea what they were doing. If you need to exchange money....good luck. They never had any when I was here.
The gift shop was trivial at best, and priced far higher than either the beach venders, or Santo Domingo airport. Also, the beach vendors never went away! So if you are looking for a relaxing day at the beach...forget it. The beach was clean, but very rocky. I recommend you have tough soles on your water shoes.
The big surprise was the weekend. On Friday night, they start selling the locals day and weekend passes. The pool area became the biggest, loudest high school party I have ever seen. The disco got so loud, that if you are in the 500 building on the beach, you won't be sleeping until 3:00 am Friday or Saturday.
Also, the drunken party goers never seemed to stop pounding on each others doors, or yelling in the echo chamber of a hall way. In addition, trying to get a seat in a restaurant became a challenge all weekend. Hopefully, you aren't planning to have a drink at the bar either.
Finally, a word about the Jamaican people - "no problem". That's all you ever hear them say. The Dominicans who speak English have a word, too. It's "No". |

My pillows consisted of cotton balls stuffed in a pillow case. There were bugs everywhere in my room. They did not clean the rooms at all while I was here. They would come in, take my dirty towels, and leave me no clean towels.
Also, the food was beyond horrible. I would not feed my cat nor dog this food. I went days with out eating. In addition, the pool was covered with a layer of slime, and the drinks were watered down.
This was the worse vacation I have ever been on. I could not wait to come home. I highly recommend not staying here. |

I just came back from Barcelo Talanquera, and was really disappointed. My room was not very clean, and it had poor lighting. Facilities to wash clothes didn't exist here.
Also, the mini bar only had two bottles of water and one bottle of Coke. However, no bottle opener could be found. They didn't restock it at all, either.
I don't think this hotel should be listed as a three-star accommodation because it really wasn't. Also, the food was ordinary, and not warm enough.
If I go back, I'd rather stay in Punta Cana. I've heard good things about it from friends. |

My husband, our daughter and I enjoyed our stay at the Barcelo Talanquera. I'd read the reviews after I'd paid for and confirmed our trip. I was a little apprehensive about the outcome of the hotel, but it was too late to back out.
My husband and I vacationed in the Dominican Republic one other time, but stayed in Punta Cana, which was quite enjoyable.
I was glad that I'd read some of the reviews because they were quite informative. I just wanted my daughter's experience to be memorable, and it was. She truly enjoyed herself.
The hotel's menu selection should be broader. The food was okay, yet a little repetitive for my taste. However, my family enjoyed the food offered. I was a little surprised by the Italian restaurant, as the food was not what I'd anticipated, but that's life.
As a whole, I can honestly say I enjoyed our stay. The beach was a little rocky for me, but one can get past that also.
The staff was helpful to some degree, but it would have been nice to have some staff on board who truly spoke and understood English. I attempted to get some towels, but it was a little difficult. Next time, I'll bring a Spanish dictionary. |

I found this place to be a great resort for the family and all! My family and I came here for vacation, and it was splendid.
The food was good, and the people were nice. Also, the resort was so beautiful, with natural, tropical beauty everywhere. It was so relaxing.
There was always something to do. The shows were entertaining, and the pool was very nice. In addition, the beach had a great scenery, and the water was warm.
Our room wasn't a five-star room, but for the price it was decent.
The restaurant food was delicious.
The only thing that was not bad - but not the best - was the room. Otherwise, our experience here was great.
One more thing - if you don't know Spanish, I suggest you bring a Spanish dictionary and practice (just the basic phrases).
In all, I loved the Barcelo Talanquera! |

My wife and I read the mixed reviews before making the decision to stay here. We are in our late 20s and have stayed in hotels all over the world; some five-star accommodations. There are negatives and positives at all hotels, whatever the cost.
We arrived late, and our room was flooded from a leaky pipe in the restroom. Shortly after, we were given a very nice garden view room with trees and green landscape everywhere.
The staff was helpful, but obviously overworked. The food was good, but if you are a perfectionist, you will have complaints. The drinks were good, as well. We didn't want to get wasted or gain weight, so being particular about our choice of food and amount of alcohol we could consume, wasn't an issue.
The pool was very nice. Entertainment was average. Trees on the beach were a pleasant suprise. The sea was great (no large waves or undercurrent). It was a very tropical setting - much different from the five-star cookie-cut hotels we've been to in Mexico.
Guest services was fantastic. Vendors on the beach would bargain and were good to take "no" for an answer. There were security guards on site everywhere - day and all night.
We've stayed in much more expensive hotels with less enjoyment. This was probably the most relaxing vacation with the best weather, and it was very affordable. |

My friend was talked in to an exchange through RCI at this property. I have traveled all over the world and have an idea of what to expect.
We stayed in a broken-down bungalow in the back of the property which was over-grown. The sofa could not be sat upon (it had seen better days years ago) due to noticable sagging.
The bedrooms were so-so. There was trash all along the roadside just outside the resort (about 50 feet from the reception area), and the beach was murky.
The buffet area was not clean, and the food selection/quality was poor. We made a reservation at the French restaurant on two occasions, but despite our reservation it was "closed" - no phone call or message.
The only things I can say that were good about the resort were the pool and the staff (who were pleasant). |

We ventured to this unknown place (to us) via our time share. There were eight of us all family traveling. We had read the reviews prior to traveling, and wanted to find an upgrade....too late.
On our arrival there was chaos. And since we didn't speak Spanish.....more wait and more chaos. Afte a two-hour wait, we finally checked in. None of the rooms were up to par. We decided to submit a proposal for housekeeping - it was very poor. But the beachfront rooms were gorgeous, the staff was incredible, and the food was different (but we enjoyed trying new things).
My brother and niece did the RV ride and said it was excellent. My mother, sister, niece and son did horsebacking riding....excellent.
Our family took two tours - one of the city, and one of the town. The guide for the city was outstanding....sharing and answering questions. We thoroughly enjoyed it. My eight-year-old son even remembered some poignant points.
The city tour was horrible. We were made to feel like outsiders. There was no hospitality until it was time for us to spend money, which we didn't. That seemed to be the only way to show how you are treated.
Would we go back? Yes! Would we like better facilities? Yes! We would definitely recommend Barcelo Talanquera to other families. A vacation should not only be time of relaxation, but also a learning experience. We learned so much about the country and the people. |

This hotel needs serious refurbishment. Visited: September 2005 |

We had a terrific holiday. The weather was perfect, the sea was clear and blue, the staff was very helpful, and the food was good.
The problems that we encountered were that the hotel was in need of some serious refurbishment (which I believe is being done soon). The public toilets tended to get smelly, and in several, the taps were broken.
We had no television for most of our two-week stay, and had to call three times to get it repaired. Also, the hairdryer took three days to get fixed!
The other problem was that at the weekends, they get a lot of local visitors who tended to take over the hotel. As a result, the longer staying visitors got ignored. We also felt that they should have opened all the restaurants at the weekend due to the number of extra guests. In addition, the extra guests tended to be very noisy late at night and in the early hours of the morning. We had to call to the desk to ask them to be quiet (at 3 a.m.!)
The rooms were clean and sufficient for our needs. I was very glad we had an oceanview room, as the garden rooms were damp and dark.
The entertainment was poor.
The French restaurant was superb, and the service was excellent. Although, we had to pay a supplement for the privilege.
Altogether, it was an excellent holiday for relaxing and unwinding. We would definitely return to the Dominican Republic, but probably not to the Talenquera. |

The resort wasn't that bad. I stayed here for three days(weekend). You basically get what you pay for.
The buffet did get a little boring after a while, and it could get you sick depending on how sensitive your stomach is. The all-inclusive drinks were horrible. The only good one was the screwdriver and, of course, the beers! The Italian restaurant was okay, but not great.
The staff was nice, except the resort seemed to be under-staffed. Guest relations was very helpful, just ask for Enrique or Dominic.
The bedrooms weren't bad. The only problem I had with my room was the bathroom curtain. It was disgusting! Other than that, you can make whatt you want to out of any place you go. I enjoyed myself the most I could. I wouldn't go back to that particular resort, though. |

I stayed here for a week. It was really good. They left me with a good impression.
However, something I didn't like of the resort was that when it rained, the water got into some rooms. But everything else was really awesome. |

I book this hotel as a last minute holiday. We flew into Punta Cana Airport being told it was 1 1/2 hours to the hotel- 3 hours later we arrived. This hotel was dirty, smelly, the rooms were large but smelt of damp and the pillows (well i wouldnt sleep there). The food was cold and tasted disgusting. The tables had no suger, spoons, or cups, the whole thing was awful. Also if you dont tip what the staff want they get the hump. Please do not go there, go to the North of the Dominican Republic you will love it. Punta Plata.
