My husband and I just got back from Sun Village (March 23-27, 08). After having been to two Sandals resorts in St. Lucia and Jamaica, I can honestly say, this place ranks at the top of our list.

I cannot describe how beautiful the grounds were, with the cascading pools. Also, the staff was friendly and at our service at all times.

It was quiet, romantic, and clean. also, the food was good and fresh. No complaints, there, especially for the money.

Top shelf liquor was not here. But if they provided it at the price they were charging, they would not stay in business. However, local rum and local tequila tasted great. Just do not expect Jack Daniels.

Please go to this resort, if you are going to Puerto Plata. The spa was out of this world. It was so gorgeous.

In addition, there was a mini bar in the room, and that is a plus for an all-exclusive.

I did not gain an ounce due to all the steps on the property (it is built on a hill). So, if you are lazy or disabled, consider that.

You will love it! I want to go back right now, but Monday is workday!

This place was total paradise. Visited: July 2007

My family stayed at this beautiful resort for two weeks at the beginning of July, and we had the best holiday we could have wished for.

All the negative reviews you may read are nothing to go by. I was curious once we had booked the holiday, so I checked out the hotel reviews, too. I got scared of what we had gotten ourselves into. However, I worried for nothing at all.

The hotel was beautiful, and the grounds were amazing. The staff was really helpful, and would do anything to make your stay become more enjoyable.

There were a lot of steps there, so be aware if you are disabled and find steps difficult. You should let the staff know. Don't book another hotel, because the staff here will always run you down to the beach or to your room - basically anywhere you want to go in one of their buggies, (golf buggies).

I honestly cannot stress enough how the negative comments reflect on the hotel in an insulting way. The attitude of staff and the general atmosphere of the resort gives this hotel at least five stars to begin with.

I suggest you ignore all of the negative comments. They are probably from rival hotels or something! Take my word for it, you will have the time of your life here - whatever type of holiday you set out for. We would certainly go back!

This was one of the best places I've ever been to! It was completely relaxing.

The helpful staff really made our stay carefree, and service was everything one could ask for.

It was a beautiful property with stunning pools and beach. Also, our room was cool and comfortable on those hot days!

We decided to book our reservation for this less than average "resort" with Hotels.com two months in advance. When we arrived at the airport, we were packed into a small van with luggage piled upon ourselves.

Once we were a couple minutes from the airport, the driver pulled over and said we had a small problem and that the "resort" was overbooked and we had to stay somewhere else that was "almost" as good.

The temporary resort was one-star at best. We then had to repack and move to Sun Village halfway through our "relaxing" vacation. Once there, it was the same as the first resort - except the staff was rude, there were a thousand steps, and they had seven pools. It was nothing special.

They did not seem to care about what we went through. We thought it was a scam! They charged us a higher rate, overbooked, then paid a different resort less to put us up, keep the difference we were charged, and refused any type of refund. They did upgrade us to a Villa, which was nice of them.

However, the couples involved now only had their small bedrooms for any sort of privacy. And I'd bet it was going to be vacant anyways and this would allow them to make extra money by renting our original rooms to other people.

To make our relaxing vacation even worse, I got ripped off by Sea Pro Scuba. Due to the mix-up with the overbooking and being moved to Sun Village a day earlier then expected, I was told I had to make my own transportation arrangements to the resort we were displaced to.

I made arrangements with Sun Village for transportation. The next morning I was put on a bus by Sea Pro's quite rude and condescending rep named Mickey. There was some miscommunication as he thought I was going to stay on the bus and be transported to their dive center.

I thought I was being transported to the other resort to catch the bus there. Sea Pro's driver dropped me off on the side of the freeway, and I was forced to run across the freeway and walk to the resort. Once there, the bus had already departed, and I was stuck without transportation.

Sea Pro supervisor Marcos apologized, and stated he would refund my money the same day or next day. When I went to collect my refund the following day, Marcos called me a liar and stated he received a different history from Mickey.

Sea Pro offered to take me diving that afternoon, yet refused a refund. Why would they offer to take my diving in the afternoon if they thought I was in the wrong. I mean they actually called me a liar! What an insult. It seams that Sea Pro will be really nice and suave, once they have your money, they don't care. You are just another tourist they won't see again.

Sun Village was a three-star at best. Visited: December 2006
Posted by robottawa
Sun Village was only 20% to 25% booked. The grounds were that of a four- star property. Also, there were stairs everywhere, and the beach was 3KM long. The pools were good.

The rep at the airport in Puerto Plata recommended if we had any problems with the resort to go to their TMR rep onsite - not the front desk. On check in, our agent had provided a free upgrade coupon to a superior room, and it was not honoured.

Our first room (200 block) was a dump. It was dirty, grim in every crack and groove, and there were paint patches on the walls in different colors. Also, there were only two bath towels.

At the intro meeting with TMR rep., we asked about the free room upgrade. We were upgraded in two minutes, and we were moved to a superior room (303 block), which I would class as a standard room. However, it was clean and equipped.

Sun Village assigned a rep to each guest also. They offered free rum to come to their intro meeting. It was timeshare sale type of resort. I suggest you just say no. They will call your room and find you on the beach, buffet, just say no, and they go away.

At the restaurants and bars, a tip of 20 to 50 pesos seemed to improve service.

The buffet had a okay, ariety for any taste. They had flavored oils and hot sauces, not two or three for a different item for that taste. Items seemed to sit there a long time, though. The beach buffet for lunch was good. Also, there was BBQ by the beach bar that offered beef, pork, chicken and all the fixings.

Al la carte restaurants were good, and the service great. We went to the Italian, Mexican and Thai. The Thai was was like cheap Chinese food, but it was still okay.

The bars were good. One bartender did not seem trained, as he did not know how to make the drink of the day.

The music that was piped around the resort was good. Night entertainment was good, and they had a different act each night. It was a little more professional than we have seen at our resorts in the past.

Wook the COCO town trip the fort, Amber museum and local lunch, rum factory, and shopping. It was okay for $36. It was cheap way to see the town, but was nothing special.

One negative, which I cannot point to the resort, raised a couple of questions for me.

I got the gastro ailment, every second or more person we talked to also got it at different times of the week.

Would we go back? No! There were too many other resorts in this class I would stay in - and without the time-share sales annoyance.

My experience here was a disappointment. Sure, you save money. However, the people seemed very disrespectful. The hosts would turn their backs on guests just so they didn't have to deal with the question being asked of them.

Also, the rooms were very small, and the showers were dirty.

I would not recommend this hotel.

It was a beautiful hotel, but a horrible hotel. Visited: March 2006

Well to say that Sun Village was amazing would be a lie. I read several reviews before leaving, and they were all negative, But I decided to make my own conclusions, and realized that the reviews were all right.

The resort was amazing. The grounds were really well kept and some of the staff members were really friendly. The pictures shown on the web site were exactly what you will get. It was really amazing. The hotel's view overlooking a mountain on the beach was quite impressive.

But…. if you are looking for a place to meet people and have fun, this is not it. There was a rule here that you could not go swimming past 7:00 pm - hotel policy. Also, they had a game room, but that closed at 7:00 pm, too. There was nothing else to do but drink at the bar by the beach until 11:00 pm (or the 24-hour bar). There was a club called Opus that was open until 3:00 am, but it was not great. There was less than ten people every night! The hotel was full of people, but at night it seemed that everyone went to bed at 9:00 pm because there was no one in sight.

Also, people from other hotels were not allowed on the premises. A couple of friends of ours almost got arrested. They had to pay the police $100 to not go to jail. That was insane. I felt like I was in prison, because there were so many rules to follow.

The beach was a tan color, and the water was murky. It was still quite nice, though. The ocean water was warmer than in the pools.

All in all, our stay here was okay. The food was average for a four-and-a-half- star hotel. I probably would never go back. But, we still made our own fun and enjoyed our week despite the rules and security guards yelling at us to get out of the pool at 9:00 pm.

This was a gorgeous hotel! Visited: January 2006

I was really surprised to read all these negative nonsense reviews.

We stayed at Sun Village around mid-January 2006. We have been to all kinds of resorts - Mexico, DR, Cuba, Puerto Rico to name just a few - and this was definitely one of the nicest

The grounds of the hotel were breathtaking; the rooms were very nice; the many pools were gorgeous; and the beach wa stunning!

There was also a huge variety of foods on the buffet - including lobster - and the a la cartes were delicious! There were bars every two steps! It very well could have been a five-star resort.

One thing we really loved was that the resort was so huge, it never seemed crowded. We had pools practically to ourselves. The only thing we were not crazy about was the lack of Latin music. They never played anything Spanish, including in the disco. It was pretty much all American music. If I wanted to dance to American music, I can do that at any club at home. If I'm in the Dominican republic, I want to hear at least some Latin music.

Other than that, we would definitely recommend this resort!

Oh, and one more thing, this resort is situated on a kind of a hill, and its all stairs. So if you have trouble getting around, this may not be the best choice.

The hotel and grounds well kept and beautiful, and the staff here was extremely friendly.

I had the best time ever on vacation here, and never laughed so hard. The animation staff was also a lot of fun and went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one.

I would love to come back here again soon.

My husband (who is from Santiago in the Dominican Republic) and I stayed at this resort for our honeymoon in December of 2004.

The resort staff was wonderful. They had many activities for the guests, including entertainment. The food was also great.

It was very nice and peaceful - very romantic for couples. We did not want to leave. We will come back for our anniversary in the near future.

Very disapointed Visited: January 2004

After vacationing in Punta Cana two years earlier and loving it and getting a great deal we decided to give the north coast a try and more specifically the EMI Sun Village.

The service was very good but the managers were consistently trying to sell us on investing in the property. They put some form of sell on us every day. I understand it's their job but that's the last thing people want to deal with when on vacation.

The food was OK, nothing spectacular, and we never got sick. They did have some top shelf booze at the bar in Ovandos but not the same selection elsewhere.

Our first room was a small, damp and musty and in need of some serious remodelling. On the first day the toilet backed up and we were moved to a much nicer room the next day. We had payed for a Deluxe room which the second room was but later found out the first room was a standard. There's a HUGE difference between the two so make sure you get waht you pay for.

A big disappointment was the beach. Absolutely the worst beach we've been to in all our travels. Brown, hard packed sand, very dirty beyond the properties boarders, cloudy water and very small. Maybe 1/2 mile tops. Not a great beach if you enjoy walking one.

Overall, even though the staff is accommodating and hard working I couldn't recommend this property.

I have traveled to many places, and the Sun Village is still my first love. The staff catered to my every need and absolutely no one was rude with an attitude.

My room had its own bar that was replinished every day, and although you are not required to tip....if you do, the bartender will remember you and your brand of drink and your glass will never be empty.

There was a club called "The Hurricane" in the resort next door, so if you can shake your tail feather to some merengue music with the local women and habla un picito espanol (speak a lil spanish), you'll have a ball!

I took the four-wheeling tour of the countryside the day after it poured down rain. If you're a motorcycle owner and fanatic like me, you will absolutely enjoy riding through the sugar cane fields reckless and wild.

The food was great and the drinks were not watered down. The beach was not as beautiful as the beaches in Turks and Caicos, but the staff did not hesitate to help make my stay an enjoyable one.

I will definitely go back.

The service was awful, the beach was okay, and the hotel was pretty. Visited: November 1999

My boyfriend and I booked this trip as a romantic getaway. We had never stayed in an all-inclusive, and wanted to splurge for the service and pampering experience. We wasted our money!

Here is a list of my complaints (which we spoke with the hotel manager regarding):

We paid for a superior room, which did not have a flat screen TV, nor chairs and a table as shown in the pictures on their web site.

The mini bar was not stocked until the second day of our stay. There were no free tickets to Bravissimo, nor did they help us book a trip to Ocean World.

The hotel offered a free 30-minute horseback ride, which we could not book on weekends. Also, we could not use any of the non-motorized beach equipment on the weekends as they had no staff to unlock the padlocks.

In addition, the hotel staff could not be found to bring me a drink - either poolside or beachside. They would not bring me another towel, either (I was told where I could go and get one myself).

The hotel staff could not book our scuba, horseback riding or Ocean World trips. We had to find third party companies in my travel book (which was very costly as Internet was $20 a day).

The pools all closed at 7:00 pm despite what the welcome package provided by hotel indicated.

Citrus (the Italian restaurant) and Senora (the Mexican restaurant) would not seat us at 10:00 pm on Saturday night, despite 11:00 pm closing times (according to welcome package information). In addition, there were cockroaches in the bread basket at Malibu restaurant.

There was no hot water on arrival, and we had problems throughout the rest of our stay. Finally, no rooms had views of the ocean (as we were told at check in).

The staff was incredible, and the grounds were fantastic. The food was good, but we all ended up ill - some of us longer than others. As soon as we started eating Canadian food, we were fine.

The only real complaint I have is I paid for a four-star room and I ended up with a room that didn't even rate one star. The room was gross! It wasn't clean, it was old, and it was small. I am really disappointed with this part of the trip.

Would I go back? I'm not sure. I would truly recommend a room upgrade, if possible.
