Stay away - it hasn't gotten any better in a year! Visited: February 2005

Unfortunately I didn't read the reviews this hotel had received in December 2003, and I too wanted a cheap get away. Next time I will spend the extra money.

The buffet was well below acceptable, the food was overcooked and barely edible. I did eat once in the Italian restaurant and must say that it was very good, I had the steak dinner. But because you had to be up at the crack of dawn and wait in line to reserve a seat at the a la carte restaurant, I wasn't able to try the others.

The property had so much potential. It was very nice, with large thatched ceilings over the restaurant and lobby area and the pool was very nice. But you again, you had to be up at 6:00 am to get a lounge chair because there was not near enough to accommodate the number of guests at the resort. This was also the same by the ocean.

The casino was the worst I have ever seen in my life. They had no right to even advertise the resort as having a casino because the slot machines were about 50 years old and there were only about 50 of them. And the table games were just as bad, there was nothing exciting about it at all.

I was told that the resort was under new management. Well, they had better do something soon, or they will be out of business.

We had to check out after one night - it was horrible! Visited: December 2003
Posted by chrisadamt
We are two families with two children each. We booked this vacation and now we think we should have never done so, but the price was what persuaded us.

Our rooms were so disgustingly dirty, and no one in management seemed to want to take responsibility because there were backups of lines of complaining patrons trying desperately to switch rooms.

The a/c did not work, the showers were broken, our mattresses had stains on them, and the box springs looked horrible. Also, the food in the restaurant was below acceptable standards.

We were so depressed the first night and no one slept. We had our husbands take a taxi and locate another resort, and we checked out after the first night.

I know this review sounds so bad that you may wonder if this could be real, but trust me, it was. I'm sure if you read on, the other reviews will corraborate our complaints. We didn't listen to the reviews, and we should have.

We do not recommend a stay here! Visited: December 2003
Posted by janda
My husband and I just returned from the Decameron in Juan Dolio (our stay was 12/24 to 1/1). I could best describe the experience as "so much bad food, so much time," or "The 'Dec' in the 'Decameron' definitely does not stand for decadence."

Upon check in, we confirmed that we would have a double bed, as per our reservation. We were assured that we would. This was not the case, however, when we went up to the room, where there were two rather tiny twin beds.

In addition to that, we had no cold water--the shower ran only hot. The room smelled moldy, and to top it off, a light bulb blew out. Also, the air conditioner did not work.

Maid service: Unfortunately, the hotel seemed to have a terrible shortage of maids. We didn't have towels for two days and had to repeatedly ask for them. One day, we received a bath mat and a regular towel. It was only on the last day of our week-long stay, we finally received bars of soap, but at least I brought my own.

We were careful not to yell at the maids because the poor service was not their fault, but rather the understaffing problem. We saw that many, many other guests screamed at the maids as well as the front desk staff.

Staff members: All staff members at the hotel were kind at all times. I felt sorry for them because most likely, they were yelled at on a daily basis. Management should take this as a clue! Hire more help! I must say that the waiters and waitresses were well versed in clearing plates at mealtime. No sooner did I put down my fork, than the plate was whisked away.

Meals: The food at the buffet was pretty bad, but not inedible. My best bet was sticking with the pasta bar where the server dished out pasta and the sauce of your choice. Watch out if you are a vegetarian, though, because all pastas and sauces were cooked together and the person did not clean out the pan in between portions.

There were three restaurants: Mexican, Italian, and Brazilian. We found the Mexican to be the best.

Overall comments: This resort has great potential, but, unfortunately, it was in great need of a general overhaul. The shower taps were on crooked and looked as though they were falling off; even the spigot was cockeyed. The gym was in terrible shape with its outdated equipment. If the management does not do something soon, the hotel will be out of business.

This is the best place to stay... great food and exotic drinks! Visited: December 2003

We are, one of hundreds of Tour Operators providing our service to both, local and foreign travelers in the Dominican Republic.
We have visited "all" Hotels & Resorts across the island and know everything there is to know about each and every one of them.
If you like to eat a healthy well cooked caribbean gourmet style food for lunch or dinner, this is the place to start. Most major hotels offers their fine cooking international, italian or mexican style food, but if you rather taste the real "Dominican Food" at its best, take our word for it: "This is it".
The drinks are served however you wish, but let the bartender suggest the ones that could possibly take you to where no one has gone before...
This is not a pay advertisement, nor we want to get any better treatment or grants from this hotel, we are very pleased with their service, so have been all of our customers "always".

First I thought it was a nice place, but when they took us to our room it was not good. Neither my husband or I like staying there. The room was small, the bed was also small, the ac did not work the tv did not have cable, the food was kind of good but not all the way....I would never go back even if it was for free.... the only thing I like was the entertainment in the night.

I advise you not to come here. Visited: October 2003

My husband and I came here a few weeks ago. We thought it was horrible.

The staff was rude to us, they seemed to hardly speak English, and the maid never came. The other guests we encountered were young, obnoxious Europeans, who seemed to hate Americans. They hung out by the pool, and I could never swim in the pool peacefully.

The beach was horrible - the watersports equipiment was old and broken. Also, don't let the color of the water fool you, there was lots of seaweed, making the water smell very bad.

We thought the food was impossible to eat and the drinks were not strong. Tipping didn't do much.

The room was horrible, it was disgusting and everything was broken. We had reseravtions for seven days, but left after four, to another much better hotel.

The best part about the hotel was when we left. However, the price was very nice even for such a horrible hotel.

Horrible! Trust Me! Visited: August 2003

Trust me! I have been living in the DR for over a year now and have been to several hotels through out the island and this has by far been the worst hotel experience I have had IN MY LIFE! To start off: our room had no towels, both beds were BROKEN, it wasnt clean, the toilet had someone else "remains" in it - and was clogged!, the service was disgusting and the food, well I still feel sick from the food poisoning, the personnel including the manager has no idea where they are standing (they didnt even know if they had a gym) after 4 hours of complaining, I finally had to get the towels myself - and the room wasnt fixed until the NEXT MORNING! Then to top everything off - at check out they conveniently didnt remember the rate they had given me and wanted to overcharge me $30 - although I had everything on paper they wouldnt budge and I ended up having to pay just to get out of there! There are so many other hotels in the island - I advise you not to waste your time, money, nor sacrifice your health, it truly is a horrible hotel!

Well two weeks all inclusive with Thomsons. This was a last minute allocation on arrival in the south of the island gauranteed at least 3 star.
Funnily enough I can't even find this hotel in any of Thomsons brochures which is a little concerning.
After one day in resort having eaten from the buffet both my husband and I were violently ill. sickness and diarrohea.
Most of the Thomsons guests were suffering. At least one day each we could not leave our bedroom. In one week we were unable to eat at all just little pieces of fruit was all we could keep down.
By this time we were ready for home, most of the locals descended at weekends eating all the food leaving empty dishes which were not replenished for us.
At one stage I picked up a piece of bread from the buffet only to find it blue mouldy throughout.
The rooms are very clean and tidy and weather is fantastic.
But how can you enjoy what should be an all inlusive holiday when you can't eat and due to feeling ill can't drink
An awful hotel in relation to this and i would not return.

We got our money's worth! Visited: February 2003

In February, my boyfriend and I decided to go to the Dominican Republic. We weren't looking to spend a lot of money, and the Decameron was the perfect price for us.

The staff was friendly and fun, the beaches were nice, and the entertainment was wonderful. They had some fun contests and shows all day, every day.

The only complaint I had was the food. It really didn't suit me. I barely ate, but I didn't let it spoil my trip. If you're not a picky eater, I guess you would appreciate the food.

I would definitely go back to the Caribbean Village Decameron Club and Casino.

My family and I went to the Dominican Republic for a good vacation. My cousin had recommended the Caribbean Village Decameron Club.

It was a good place to stay. The best thing about the Decameron was the food, though.

I loved staying here!

Very ordinary place ... Visited: March 2002

I stayed here for 1 week. First, no hot or warm water around 6 pm. The water pressure is very poor. The food is good, but not the quality we are used in Montreal . At night, if you stay near the beach, we had problems getting to sleep because of discotheque noise going on until 4 am. On weekends, it gets very crowded, the hotel doesn't have enough towels for all the rooms. Also, there are not enough chairs on the beach, you'll need to reserve early, if you want one. I don't think it is a 3-star hotel, more like a 2-star.

I stayed here for a few days and it was the best few days of my life.

It was awesome how I could just walk across the road and I was right at the beach. I thought that was the best part.

The food was also excellent. There was something different to choose from every time I dined.

Overall, I loved it and would love to come back right now!

I stayed at the Decameron and it is the best hotel in the Dominican Republic. The staff is always happy and always there for you.

The food was incredible as well as the different programs they have at night. And don't be worried about your language because the staff knows about 4 different languages. I'm planning my next trip there for December.

During my first stay in the Dominican Republic, I couldn't have been treated with more enthusiasm and care by the staff at Decameron Club. I can honestly say that it was the best vacation I have ever had. The food was great; when you’re hungry you eat from a choice of a buffet, Italian, Mexican, or Brazilian restaurant. The bar came in handy, being right next to the pool where you can bring your drinks with you while you swim. Going down to the beach was also very fun. The weather was fantastic, and the pizza was amazing! I’m planning my next visit back to the Dominican Republic and I wish everyone the same experience!

Amazing! Visited: February 2001

I stayed here for one week but could have stayed here forever. The resort was clean and the food was great, everyday there was different food. I absolutely loved the staff and the entertainment staff was especially good. They spoke so many languages, English, Spanish, German, French and the shows were always translated for the audience. The staff went out of their way to get to know our names and involve us in the activities. There was always something to do.

We went on two excursions during our stay. We went to Santo Domingo where we saw the town and a lot of historical sites as well as Saona Island, which is paradise. It was the most beautiful place I have ever seen, and definitely worth the extra money we paid to go there.

I fell in love with the Dominican Republic and its people. They are so happy and friendly. The thing that really impressed me was how they treated tourists. The beach was nice and the pizza on the beach was the best I’ve ever had; I miss it already. I would recommend The Decameron to everyone and will definitely go back again. I went with my best friend and being two young girls in a different country is sometimes a bit scary, but we never once felt unsafe, quite the opposite. We felt very protected at the resort. I envy people who are going there, because I can’t wait to go back again.

The best hotel in the DR that I've stayed at!!!! Visited: January 2000
Posted by macavigo
I stayed for one week in December '99 at Decameron, just when Barcelo hotels started to guide it. I've been in four resorts in the DR, most of them of more category than this one, but the truth is that I've never found such nice people, nice atmosphere and marvelous things as I found at this hotel.

The food is really good, with three a la carte restaurants and one buffet with plenty of variety... (including one Dominican Night!!!). Not only the animation staff, but also all the people of the resort (waiters, receptionist, etc.) will make you feel as if you were at your home, not forgetting that you are in the Dominican Republic, so they do as normal as they would do at their own home. I was traveling alone, and made so many friends between the guests and the employees, that I'm sure I will return there in a short time.

The beach is very good, the sea is calm, that allows you to practice many water sports. If you don't want to do that, try all types of games with the animation staff... Gorgeous!!!

I love the DR and I have to say that the Decameron is the most "Dominican" resort I've visited.

The best break we've ever had! Visited: January 2000
Posted by ATraveler
My two brothers and I spent two weeks in the Dominican during the Christmas period. We have all agreed it was our best trip to date. The weather was perfect. The food was fantastic. And the entertainment was wonderful with a different show every night. We tried our best to drink the free bar dry and can't wait to try again next year.

A winning combination of excellent service and facilities! Visited: January 2000

A group of 27 persons travelled to Dominican Republic from Puerto Rico and stayed at the Decameron. We found a wonderful staff including the managers, waiters and bartenders always ready to help with a beutiful smile. The facilities were spacious and well decorated. The food was excellent, offering a rich variety of local and international dishes. We also enjoyed the evening entertainment since it was very original and spicy. We highly recommend this facility and welcome the opportunity to visit it again in the near future.

A fun and relaxing getaway Visited: January 2000
Posted by mebury
I was off from school for a week and finally managed to book a resort. I had heard the Dominican Republic was a good spot to go - its tourism was still developing, but the people and food were above average. I booked through a travel agent whose pictures of the hotel didn't make it look as beautiful as it actually was. When I arrived there, the reception staff was a little crazy - we tried to get a safety deposit box but no one remembered every time we asked. Our room was nice. I got the impression that the rooms are different in different sections of the hotel. Hurricane Georges (1997) did significant damage to the resort and actually closed it down for four months! I upgraded to the junior suite but I'm not exactly sure if that's really what I got, though they said it was. I believe the junior suites in the areas that they rebuilt after the hurricane are a little bit nicer. But other than these two small things, our holiday was even better than I had imagined. I would definitely give this resort more than the three stars our travel guide gave it. They had every amenity from snorkeling to archery and bicycle tours to bocce ball on the beach. The pool was large with a basketball net and volleyball net for those who like to splash around. There are two smaller relaxing pools for those who wish to get away. I personally spent most of my time on the beach which was lined with palm trees. There are areas on the beach where you can lay in the shade as well, but they are taken relatively early in the morning (by 9am). The main buffet restaurant was large, spacious and offered different themes every night. They always had a cook who would create your own pasta for you, and someone who would always have a roast of something ready to carve. For lunch, I found the buffet restaurant a little heavy but if you like having hot lunches, you will love it. I usually spent my lunches at the beach where they have a walk up pizzaria (which has really good pizza) and they have a BBQ where you can get hamburgers, hot dogs or fish. The a la carte restaurants were good as well. There is an Italian, Mexican and Brazilian, though I did not try the Brazilian. You only get three vouchers for the first two restaurants (one night Italian (fancy) and two nights Mexican. However, you do have to get up early to book the reservations. One morning there was a line up at 6:45 even before the main buffet (which is where you make your reservations) even opened. Other than that, you have to see the shows each night, which start at 9. They were a lot of fun. The staff was extremely eager to help, and even if they didn't speak English well, they always had a smile on their face. You can scuba dive if you are certified. They pick you up and you drive to Boca Chica where you board a (small) boat to go offshore. Costs are $32 USD per dive plus a three dollar transfer. The diving was actually quite good and we saw lots of interesting fish life (eels, puffers etc.). Overall, this is the best value I have ever had in a trip. I would definitely go back! I hope you get some information out of this because when I looked around the Internet I really couldn't find much. Hope you have fun!

Decameron is the best resort ever! I love it! Visited: January 2000
Posted by Hazel12
I have been to Decameron three times and every time I visit it gets better and better. Every time I go to the Dominican Republic, I tell my family to book reservations for all of us.

I love their shows and songs: "ahi esta, ahi esta, se la llevo decameron, decameron...no pare sigue, sigue." I have never had so much fun at a resort before.

The food, pool, beach and people are great. Every time I go I call Decameron "My paradise within a paradise."
