5.0 stars Another brilliant stay! Visited: October 2001
Posted by laura_morris75
I had been to the Dominican Republic before and I knew what to expect: very friendly people, great food and excellent large quality rooms. When we returned for a second visit we were welcomed with welcome cocktails and smiling faces, as we were throughout the entire holiday.

All I can say about the shows is that they are breathtaking. You cannot miss the Michael Jackson Show; it’s brilliant. And the surprise shows are funny, too. The entertainment staff always stops and talks to you with smiling faces. There’s non-stop laughter from Rudi (Mr. Fifty-Fifty) and Ricardo. There is also an exciting and fun entertainment program, including cocktail lessons, archery and non-stop bottles of rum coming your way.

There is also a program for kids that seemed exciting. There is also a disco where you can chill out. Believe me, if you choose this place your memories will last for a lifetime. It’s a place where I will certainly be going back to in the near future. It really is a place where all of your dreams come true! It’s definitely a must for anyone.

The Animation Team is the best group of people I have ever met on a holiday. They are so full of energy and are great fun! The complex is great and the shows are spectacular! A definite must for anyone! I’m going back as soon as possible.

3.0 stars Excellent entertainment and food, but it's a shame about the room! Visited: August 2001
Posted by wendy_gr
My daughter and I stayed at Fun Tropicale for 2 weeks. Our journey to the hotel was brief and pleasing.

We did not like the room at all! There was an unwanted large and uncomfortable bed, whereas I would have preferred two single beds. My daughter and I slept on the futon in the living room area. The room was cleaned every day and we also got towels that were sometimes stained. The TV was taken out of our room one afternoon with no note left. I was a bit annoyed and concerned that people kept coming in and out whenever they pleased.

Other low points included the boring view at the rear of the room, no table for drinks outside, and the painful holiday tummy I got, which ruined my second week completely.

High points included excellent entertainment, fabulous cocktails, a good selection of food, and everyone assuming that I could speak Spanish! The staff was friendly and polite. My daughter loved it all.

If you have children under 12 avoid the Dominican Alps trip. This should be really for adults only. Bacardi Beach was great, but the tide was furious. Best Advice: Watch what you eat. The temptation to pig out is high, but the consequences are far too painful.

1.0 stars Friendly staff - shame about room and food. Visited: August 2001
Posted by ger_thurgood
The staff was very friendly (especially Mercedes at the kids’ club). The evening entertainment was also good, although we found it was repeated in the second week, so you may wish to venture elsewhere if staying for more than a week. However, there are many bad points to take note of:

Rooms - Very badly maintained. We stayed in D152 and D150 where doors had obviously been tampered with. There was mold on our bathroom mirrors, the air conditioning and fan were very noisy, the rooms felt constantly damp and we had a number of vacationing cockroaches for a few days.

Drinks - If you like Rum only, it's great.

Food - We all had bowel trouble after the first few days. When it became evident that this was a bit worse than might be expected from more normal "deli belly" we went to the medical center where the cost was $US30 for some tablets and re-hydration fluid for one person. The buffet food was very bland.

I would recommend the Brazilian and Italian restaurants, which were good. Although don't be fooled by purchasing the wine, the house brand seemed to be the best they had and it was included free-of-charge.

We would certainly visit the island again but not this hotel.

Excursions – excellent!
Catamaran - excellent!
Diving at Sosua for novices - good!

5.0 stars A 2-week stay in paradise! Visited: August 2001

Traveling from England means that the flight is a very long one to the Dominican Republic, but well worth it. The airport is modern and clean and on arrival a picture is taken of you with a few locals, which you can buy for Ł3/$5 when you leave.

It's always hot there, which takes some getting used to, but it's great. The hotel is amazing; Everyone is really friendly, in particular Pepito and Rudy. We were a bit surprised by the rooms at first but when you think about it all you need is a warm shower, a sink, bed and an air conditioner.

The buffets are really nice, although some of the male staff is a little too friendly at times, but only in a funny way.

The disco is great fun. Again the staff is usually there, although they aren’t very vigilant about the age limit. On the weekends the hotel is kind of overcome by Dominican visitors, so the discos are full of Meringue (kind of hard to dance to), but fun. Everyone should do the inter-club dance it's so fun!

And I did all of the activities around the pool, including the aqua aerobics with Rudy, which was fun. The entertainment in the evening is always good, they work really hard on the shows and they're all excellent dancers. The icebreaker is always funny, although they usually want to use men for it. I would recommend going up at least once though, you win Dominican rum! We collected 4 bottles during our stay!

The sun was always shining, and once you adjust to the high temperatures, it's perfect. The first week was just a blur of adjusting to the heat, and the second one just rushed by. My advice is to do as much as possible to have good memories.

I've never been to a hotel with such a mixed group of people. They were from all over the world there, and the Animation Team (the people who run all the activities) can speak so many languages!

We also went white-water rafting during our stay. It was very exhilarating and amazingly fun, although one warning is that Dominican judgment of things is usually a lot bigger then normal. (It took 2 Dominican hours to get into the mountains- i.e., 3!)

I thought the beach was nice, but a little too windy. Those who don't enjoy the loud and upbeat atmosphere around the main pool will like it, as well as the restaurant pool.

I loved the holiday so much and would do anything to go again. So there's a teenage opinion of Fun Tropicale for those of you who are going and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

4.0 stars Great time. atmosphere and entertainment. Visited: July 2001

Our room (in the Fun Tropical) was of a very low standard. The door wouldn't lock and we spent the first 3 hours waiting for it to be fixed. However, we complained and were moved to the Fun Royal where the room (with an interconnecting door to the kids’ room) was a lot better, all be it a bit noisy when the locals arrived for the weekends.

The food was more than adequate with a good choice and as much of it as we wanted. The dishes, however, were strange to us (fish and chip brigade stay away)!

The entertainment staff made the holiday and was first-class (beware the icebreakers though) with well choreographed shows most nights (not Broadway but good family entertainment). A must is the club meringue dance at the end of each show, which was lots of fun!

The resort was based around a first-class golf course. The hotel was a 5-minute walk to the beach with free transport for the lazy. Beware the beach touts; visit the flea market instead. There were the usual trips on offer etc. Do try the Jungle Safari through the hotel, but don't go on the one that does the waterfall jumps—very dangerous!

5.0 stars Friendly, fun--the best holiday ever! Visited: July 2001
Posted by birdyvb
I have been to many foreign places, but this has by far been the best yet. Everything about this holiday was enjoyable.

The variety of food made a pleasant change to fish 'n chips, with the main buffet-style restaurant and specialist Brazilian and Italian restaurants.

During the day you are offered to participate in many activities, such as darts, cocktail lessons, bingo, beach volleyball, pool volleyball, Spanish lessons and aquarobics. The staff is helpful and reception is open 24/7. The animation team was absolutely fantastic. They work extremely long hours in the heat and sun, and still always face you with a smile. They get you to join in with activities and I feel that if it wasn't for them, my holiday wouldn't have been so much fun.

There is a 14-night program of Broadway style shows on the massive outdoor stage, with productions such as comedy shows, a rock and roll show, and a Michael Jackson show! One bloke is a dead ringer for Jacko! The bartenders are friendly and cheerful and always on the go, and I’m sure you will get on with them exceptionally well if you like lots and lots of rum, because that's all they seem to want to give you!

The rooms are of a good standard, with excellent maid service. I am (fingers crossed) going back there next year, and I would advise anyone, of any age, to have a holiday here!

3.0 stars Holiday to remember! Visited: June 2001
Posted by goodall
I must admit, I was apprehensive on arrival; however, all worries disappeared, as I was greeted by a friendly bunch of staff members all dressed to impress!

The room was simple although clean. A maid subtly came in each day of our stay ensuring our beds were made, water bottles were topped up and our towels were changed.

The three pools were cleaned throughout the day, although due to one of the pools being near a bush it regularly had leaves in it. Bugs are a hazard of the island, but if you smother yourself with insect repellant like my partner and I did you are less likely to get bitten. The shops there were expensive, so if you are going to visit this resort, remember to bring lots of suntan and after-sun lotion!

The food was varied and tasty. Odd mixtures could be seen, although they were all traditional food of the island. Unfortunately, both my partner and I experienced ‘travelers tummy,’ but that can be expected due to the change of diet.

Night entertainment was amusing and was varied during our stay. The crowd ice-breaker at the beginning was a bit scary, as you never knew whom they were going to pick to go up on stage.

Overall, this holiday was better than expected and more people than not were sorry to go home after two weeks of sun, sand and sombroso!

This was the second time both my husband and I stayed at this hotel and it is by far the best holiday we have had. Everything about the holiday was well above standard, there was so much to do and the staff was brilliant.

I really enjoyed the beach party and the lobster on the grill. The hotel was kept very clean. I only wish I could have stayed longer than two weeks, but I’m sure we will be returning again soon for another fantastic holiday.

2.0 stars Not the best Visited: June 2001
Posted by les_leadbitter
After a good journey we were met at the hotel by a flurry of traditionally dressed hotel workers followed by a badly organized check-in. The food was good never repeated and tasty. The rooms not impressive although habitable.
Entertainment good from a group of people who worked hard for little return. The only real concern were the rats. These were only seen at night and not in big groups.

5.0 stars The best holiday I have ever had! Visited: May 2001
Posted by Gpgreen
I have to say I was amazed at how much I enjoyed this holiday. I traveled with my boyfriend for a two-week holiday last month and met some fantastic people, from the locals who worked at the hotel to the English, American and Canadian holiday makers.

The activities offered around the pool help you make friends easily and within days we had built up a network of friends that we were with morning, noon and night. I was even a bridesmaid at a wedding for a couple we met the week before!

This is definitely the place to go if you want a fun, friendly time and are up for having a laugh. I found the attitude of the locals exceptional. We bantered with them in the day, and were astounded by their dancing at night.

The room was comfortable, clean and well air conditioned, but was not five-star. However, this did not effect our enjoyment of the holiday. How much time do you want to spend in your apartment when you are in such a fabulous location? Can't wait to repeat this experience.

4.0 stars Travelers from NC -- Such a fun, relaxing vacation! Visited: May 2001
Posted by lawsonas
Our vacation at Fun Tropicale was fun, fun, fun! We were forewarned by other travelers' reviews not to drink the local tap water. The hotel provided safe bottled water and replenished the water as we needed it at the restaurants and bars. We were careful to use the bottled water even when we brushed our teeth.

We purchased the bracelet/all-inclusive plan and ate all of our meals at the Calypso Buffet. The meals were fantastic; hot foods were served very hot and cold foods were served very cold. We had no stomach problems during our entire stay other than adding several pounds to our waistlines.

We took 2 tours recommended by the time-share coordinator on site--Ingrid Huffaker. Her presentation on the day after we arrived made our stay so much more enjoyable.

The only unpleasant aspect of our stay was the arrival of about 30-40 bees in our room the second day of our stay. Ingrid immediately had us moved to another room for the rest of our stay. The rooms were clean, modern, and comfortable.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Fun Tropicale! The pina coladas were GREAT!

1.0 stars The holiday I wish to forget Visited: January 2001
Posted by wlshb
This was a below standard hotel. The entertainment consisted of staff who mimed to poorly recorded music. There were drunks making fools of themselves on stage, and a disco that was frequented by more staff than guests.

The food was never served warm (forget about hot). We experienced bowel problems and sickness. Doctors were fast off the mark when I had to call them to my wife in the middle of the night due to my wife being seriously ill with gastro problems. We have been home a week now and she is still under the care of our own doctor.

The rooms were unclean and poorly maintained.

This was one holiday I wish to forget and never, ever repeat.

3.0 stars Great entertainment, shame about the food poisoning. Visited: December 2000
Posted by helenleander
We arrived at the hotel to be greeted by the most happiest smiliest people we had ever met, which is just what you need after a long haul flight. After we checked in, the bell boy showed us to our room. The room was, well what can I say, sub-standard. The glass was falling out of the balcony doors, we had a hole and a wasps nest in our roof, and we were constantly being bitten by something. After a few days we had made a few friends, and so mentioned our room. They said their room was of excellent standard and were invited to take a look. Their room was of 5* standard, it was like luxury, no holes or wasps or anything!! We later found out that the rooms were being re-furbished and we had been placed in one of the few rooms that had not been done.

The food on the first night, I have to say was disappointing. There was no choice and the food that was on offer was very bizarre: Bananas and pickles in the same dish!!! The choice of food did actually get better as the holiday progressed. Three days into the holiday, 3 out of the 4 of us came down with stomach cramps, sickness and what was locally described as the Puerta Plata Splatter!! Food poisoning, great! We reported it to our rep who then informed the health standards, we heard nothing more from that.

The rest of the holiday was hit and miss, some days spent all day in bed ill and some days fine. We ended up sticking to a diet of bread and potatoes, scared to eat anything else. We are still suffering from these symptoms and are being tested by the doctor to see what we have caught.

The entertainment was fantastic. The entertainment team kept you busy with activites during the day and then gave you a breath taking broadway like show in the evening. The team was so talented, dancing, acting, singing. fAB! All the staff made you feel very welcome and always smiled.

The pools were of good size, although one did host home to many dead bugs and insects, yuk! One of the pools was very lively with music and pool games, and one was extremely quiet and relaxing. We did find that there was a large amount of insects flying and crawling about and we was bitten more than usual. We did expect insects on the island as it isn't our first visit, but where we stayed before we wasn't bitten or poisoned.

The best thing about this hotel is the entertainment, that is definetly 5*. But the food and our room was very much to be desired. I would return to this hotel if I was guarenteed a re-furbished room and to be food poisoning free.

5.0 stars Great value and fun times Visited: January 2000
Posted by jburgoin
We own a timeshare at Fun Tropicale and have vacationed here six times. We have visited other places but have always found that the value for the money, the food, the entertainment, the staff at this resort is the very best we have found.

It's unfortunate that the people from Yorkshire got a bad room and a dose of the tourista. They should have complained about their room, the hotel would have moved them. As for the food poisoning, we never had a problem with the food at the hotel, however we did get hit with it when we ate or drank outside the resort.

I highly recommend this resort to all my friends and family and there are nine of us going down next month.

I have been to InterClubs Fun Tropicale twice and loved both times! The shows were excellent, especially the Halloween show! The entertainment staff is very friendly. There is so much to do here every minute of day; there are activities available for all different age groups. The beach even has a free food bar and free water sports. I also found the beach staff to be very friendly. I like the Dominican Republic because it is a very relaxed place and I definitely will be returning in the future.

Surrounded by beautiful gardens, the large clean apartments hosts everything one could ask for. The choice of food, in my opinion, has yet to be matched by any other hotel I have visited. I found the staff exemplary and their attitude towards the guests first class. With swimming pools for lounging around and others for active sports, this hotels caters to everyones needs.
