4.0 stars It was amazing! Visited: May 2004

I had a great time staying at this beautiful resort. My whole family went as one of our family members was getting married at the resort.

The weather was a bit disappointing at the beginning of the holiday, but after a few days it brightened up and got really hot!

The wedding was a complete success and everyone had a marvelous time.

The shows were excellent and the entertainers were great with the kids. Roody and Savvie were a great laugh as were Hector and the others.

The swimming pool bar was also great! All the activities during the day were a great laugh and everybody enjoyed themselves considering we were a big party of over 30 people!

The dolphin trip was excellent. The dolphins were so well trained and the people there were ever so nice, I would recommend this trip! Also, the go-karting was excellent, really challenging and fun for the whole family. The local plaza was great for gifts and had a lot of good shops and items on offer.

The beach was nice and the free banana boat ride was a lot of fun, as were the kayaks.

The food at the beach was quite nice and the hotel food was wonderful. The Itallian and Brazilian was a nice change from the main Calypso restaurant. The Calypso restaurant had a good variety of foods, though, and a big selection for vegetarians as well

However, we had a bit of trouble with the rooms. We were scattered all over the place. Some of our party were in Fun Royale and others were in the Fun Tropicale. Also, one of the rooms was full of wasps. At first, the staff wouldn't move the people, but it got so bad they had to be moved.

But overall, the holiday was amazing!

4.0 stars Fun Royle was awesome! Visited: April 2003

We stayed at this resort from April 27-May 4. I have to admit we were not expecting anything special being this resort was only rated a three-star. We arrived and were blown away!

In my opinon, this was not a three-star resort. It was clean, beautiful and huge. The restaurants were amazing - and don't be afraid to drink their water, either (just dont drink the tap water).

The people were amazing, there were lots of activities during the day, and the rooms were clean and comfortable. All the staff worked very hard to keep the resort clean and respectable. The disco was good, not busy all the time, but it was nice! We went on the waterfall excursion, it was beautiful and I would recommend anyone to try it.

We had an amazing time and would not hestiate to re-visit this resort in the future. See you next year!

A friend of mine and I traveled to Fun Royale for the first time last week. I just arrived home last night and couldn't wait to write and tell people what a great time we had!

This was certainly more than we expected indeed! It was worry-free and so well organized. The staff was so friendly, courteous and highly professional.

The Calypso restaurant had excellent food choices and it was clean, clean, clean! Anna, Francisco, Juan Carlos and Fermin were terrific to say the least. And the bartenders (Yoany and Caesar) were excellent! The Italian a la carte restaurant was great...as well as the Brazilian as we reserved in both and had no problem booking. Just get up early and do it!

The pools were kept crystal clean - and yes - the adult pool did get a few leaves and small insects in it at times, but mostly in the p.m. as it was located next to a fantastic Hibiscus hedge. It was a small price to pay for a refreshing cool down. Just try to imagine what's in your lakes and rivers at home that you cannot see when you swim.

The Fun staff was a great and energetic group and the costumes were just gorgeous. Having the beach a five- minute commute was a small price to pay for the wonderful view of the groomed and spotless golf course with Mt.Isabella in the background.

I have to take a vacation from my vacation as we didn't stop for a moment. I highly recommend the Outback Safari, Sosua Beach flea markets, and free use of bicycles There was no better way to explore.

The rooms were comfortable and clean and I would compare them to a local Howard Johnson/Wandalyn Inns. The grounds were kept very, very clean! Even the leaves from the trees were picked up.

Thank you all for making my holiday unforgettable. New friends are plentiful and now I am impatiently waiting to get back here again soon!

4.0 stars A place to always come back to. Visited: October 2002

This was my third time to this awesome resort. I arrived on the 26th of October to smiling faces and happy people. My room was what I had requested - 3rd floor with a balcony facing the pool. If you make a room request at the time of the booking, you will usually get it. My room was smaller than I usually got, but totally clean and served its purpose. I travelled alone this time and had one king size bed.

The main buffet had been changed since my last visit, with nicer tables and it felt more like eating out at a nice restaurant than buffet. The food was pretty much the same since last time.

The entertainment excellent as always. I can't say enough about the Animation Team, they are truly fabulous. They will make sure you have a great time. They put on an absolutely fantastic Halloween show, it was really something to see.

The beach was okay, I didn't spend a lot of there. I prefered the pool, where the activities were.

I must say the disco was pretty much dead, the entire time I was there, which was too bad. I did check out a couple of the other discos in the complex which was worth doing, especially the Crazy Moon!

All the staff is terrific, I love them all, they will make your stay is unforgettable. Don't be afraid to go alone, you will have a great time. I can't wait to go back!

4.0 stars Fun Royale was "funtastic"! Visited: August 2002

We arrived! It was absolutely great to see the wide variety of fun services available. The accommodation, the restaurants, the pool, the bars, and the entertainment were all excellent. We are a family of five and were really looking forward to a restful holiday with nothing to worry about.

The food was great, with a wonderful variety/selection of various kinds of foods to try. The accommodation was clean, bathrooms were spotless and all kinds of channels were available to watch on tv, which was wonderful for the children.

The afternoon snack bars were deliciously inviting, and the pizza bar was a great hit not only for the children, but also the adults. However, the line ups every afternoon were long! The selection of the two al carte restaurants were great.

Advice to anyone travelling here - you have got to make sure you go to the Brazilian restaurant! We went there twice. Had we tried it out earlier, that would have been our evening hideout!

The entertainment was absolutely professional, the people were friendly and willing to help. The beach was great! There were also lots of bargains. If you want to have your hair braided, make sure you do it on the beach and not at the saloon. It was way cheaper! Don't hesitate - it's a trip you will always remember!

5.0 stars The best holidays of my life! Visited: May 2002

This is an absolutly amazing place to go. I have been here seven times now and am planning my next visit for January. I think that everything about the Fun Royale is wonderful.

Let's start with the staff - they are all fun and make your trip absolutley wonderful. They include you in everything they can - but leave you free to say 'no' if you want to! They provide plenty of excitement including darts, volleyball and other activities that will get you out of the sun for a while!

The rooms are not great, but they do what they are meant to - they provide somewhere to sleep and get changed! They are cleaned every day and have a television just in case you need to get out of the sun.

The food cannot be faulted and with five restuarnts to choose from, who would choose to complain?

You also have the free horse riding and water sports to choose from, which will always keep you entertained.

You cannot fault this holiday - it is absolutly brilliant. I have been with a variety of people - my mum and dad, brothers and friends, and every time it has been just as good as the next!

It is a holiday that you won't regret - I never did!

2.0 stars Worse than I expected Visited: May 2002

OK...so I read all the reviews and thought that it would be great...everyone had nice things to say, my travel agent had been there...so, no worries...right? WRONG!!!
Arrived on May 4th to a room that had bugs in it (looked like little ticks). Went to reception who insisted on cleaning the room instead of us being moved...finally got a room in the same building (A) on the third floor (307)...at most it was a place to sleep and nothing else.

There are three pools. Cannot comment on the kid's pool and the "quiet pool"...however, the main pool with the pool bar was absoloutley disgusting...the water had a film on it an inch thick with hair, bugs, leaves, etc., floating on top...not to mention what was on the bottom. I was there a week and didn't see it being cleaned once.

The food was horrible. Both me and my boyfriend were sick from the day after we arrived until the day before we left. It doesn't matter what restaurant you eat at it all tastes the same. If you're looking for a change, go to the beach for the hotdogs, they're good.

As for night life at the resort, the shows in the evening were wonderful...very professional and very entertaining...while we were there they did a Disney production called "Fantasia" and a medley of broadway shows...however the disco was a bust...no one there except the DJ.

Lastly, the beach was amazing...blue water and a nice breeze. We had wonderful weather the whole time we were there...40C and sunny every day!!!

My final thoughts...
Things definitely not to miss are the Jeep Safari (great way to see how the locals live and conquer your fear of heights by climbing waterfalls), the Catamaran trip to Sousa for snorkeling (spectacular), and the tour of the Rum Factory (a quart for $5!!). All of these things are well worth the money you pay to see them.

My daughter and I spent a fantastic two-week holiday at the Fun Royale.

First impressions of our second floor room were disappointing. It was run down and had no balcony. We were relocated on the ground floor. The odd numbered rooms faced the grounds and the even numbered rooms overlooked a parking lot.

The food at Fun Royale was excellent. We went to the Italian restaurant and the Brazilian restaurant. The Brazilian was our favourite. On Friday nights at a small supplement you can order delicious lobster.

The beach was a 10-minute walk through very pretty grounds or the shuttle went frequently to the lovely beach. We took advantage of the free water sports (sailing and windsurfing lessons and banana boat rides), scuba diving lessons in the pool and also horseback riding.

Vendors on the beach were not at all pushy. I recommend Fauso King, who worked for Jones Caribbean Tours. He was on the beach most days selling tours much cheaper than those purchased through the hotel/travel agent. They were the same tours at about 25% cheaper.

We went on the Jeep Safari and we both enjoyed it. Climbing the water falls was the highlight of the trip - it was not for the faint-hearted – you do need to be a good swimmer and be adventurous. Take shoes that grip so you can wear them in the water for climbing!

We also went to Paradise Island, reached by an exhilarating speedboat ride. The tiny island is idyllic and the colors of the coral reef and fish were the best I have ever seen. Buy a waterproof camera from the tour guide. The same disposable was 100 pesos more from the hotel or in the plaza.

A tip was always very much appreciated to the helpful staff, as the wages were poor here. They were very impressed that my daughter spoke Spanish and even if you speak only a few phrases, they would be very welcome.

Ladies may like to know that the rooms do not have a hairdryer, nor are there tea/coffee making facilities in the room. Beach towels were provided.

I highly recommend the Fun Royale and have a great stay – we did!

This was our second time to the Dominican Republic. Last year we went to the south of the island and this year we stayed on the north side at Playa Dorada at the Fun Royale.

The hotel overlooked the lovely nearby golf course with a great view from the restaurant. The hotel room was very clean and spacious and the air conditioning was a wonderful as it was so hot.

The food was okay. Although it was a bit basic, they also had the Brazilian and Itailian restaurants on site you could book into those if you fancied a change (provided you got up before 7.30 a.m. to book in for that night).

We didn't have any problems at all, and thought it was excellant value for money. The entertainment staff worked so hard all day around the pool and put on a great show in the evening. The costumes and special effects were great.

I certainly would go back. We met a lot of other couples and this made it a great holiday.

4.0 stars Had a wonderful time. Visited: January 2002

At 31 years old, this was my first trip abroad outside of Canada and my first real vacation. I can not say enough about the staff of the hotel, who was always polite, helpful and fun.

My room at the Fun Royale/Tropical was always kept very clean (which was very important to me). My maid was wonderful and trustworthy, nothing was ever touched or even moved that didn't need to be. The pool area was always kept clean, and so was the resort.

The food at the hotel and at the beach was fantastic and was very healthy as well. I suffer daily from acid reflux at home and not once did I have the need to take out any medication to settle my stomach here.

I have worked in the food and beverage industryin a hotel environment for five years and I honestly could not see a big difference at all. I tried to find things to pick about and couldn't - and I am one of the pickest people ever.

The resort wasn't on the beach itself, but it was less then a ten minute scenic walk. Of course, there is a shuttle that runs to and from the beach if you are too tired from all the excitement of playing volleyball or sitting around on the beach with all the cool drinks. The evening shows were always entertaining and worth checking out.

The money I saved by staying at the Fun Royale/Tropical allowed me to go on excursions outside the resort, which included Paradise Island, The Outback Safari, and a day trip into Sousoa, and Peurta Plata.

Overall, I would not hesitate to go back again.

I had such an amazing time. The animators were so fun. There were so many activities to chose from: soccer, volley ball, ping pong, meringue lessons, cocktail lessons, competitions and so much more.

The employees are super nice and will do anything to make your trip delightful. I went there and met people of all ages so if you're thinking of going alone don't worry, you'll have a blast.

My suggestions are to go to Sosua Beach, Cabarete, Haiti and swimming in the underwater caves. My trip was perfect and I owe it to the amazing staff and to the beautiful country that the Dominican Republic is.

4.0 stars 4-time repeat visitor--superior service, top value. Visited: December 2001
Posted by 1ilse1
I have visited Fun Royale 4 times, and came originally with a friend who had been 6 times.

This is a 3-star hotel, so it is quite casual, fun-loving and friendly. Daytime activities are plentiful, with most enthusiastic animators. A busy pool with a great swim-up bar is ideal for those who wish to socialize and stay active. A second, quiet pool, suits sunbathers, bookworms and those of us who like a snooze to make up for a late night out.

The beach is a short walk away, and a shuttle runs regularly as well. There, food and another bar are available, along with water sports.

Rooms vary in size and an upgrade can be requested if desired. I have always been happy with my accommodations.

Evening entertainment includes the usual shows, and a disco provides not-bad music and dancing. I would suggest another location, nearby, "Crazy Moon", or highly recommend a trip into town to check out "La Barrica" and the oddly-paired but very busy "Car Wash Discos", or the terrace at the Mountainview.

The staff at Fun Royale is wonderful, especially the bar and dining staff. Look for Innocence, Ciriaco and Fernando at the bars, and if you want a pleasant dining experience, get to know Juan Carlos, the most attentive waiter you will ever have the pleasure of knowing.

Food is plentiful, a bit bland, and of good quality. I recommend any of the local specialties, such as yucca, the grill and the made-to-order pasta bar. Check out the two Specialty Restaurants as well, one Italian and the other Brazilian, for a nice change of pace.

Please be aware that wages are very low, and all the staff work very hard. I recommend leaving a small gratuity at each meal from your first day. You will be even better taken care of!

I have visited Fun Royale with friends, family and alone. Never a disappointment. Remember that this is only a 3-star rated hotel, and don't expect more. You will be pleasantly surprised and rewarded with a wonderful holiday!

My husband and I spent 7 nights, and I was extremely sick for 2. They give you plenty of food, but it's not the best quality and everything tastes the same. Avoid the drinks with coconut milk, they are guaranteed to ruin your night with tummy aches. Bring headache and stomach medication, you will be guaranteed to use it or meet someone who will.

Our room was very musty smelling, we had to air out our clothes from the closet before we put them on because they smelled like mildew. Our friends made out better, fresher rooms and linens, and not damp at all.

Ok vacation for really cheap, but not the best resort I've been to and will not return. If you're a college student or single person looking to have fun and not planning on doing much sleeping anyway, you will probably enjoy it more than we did.

5.0 stars One week of non-stop fun and entertainment! Visited: February 2001

I came to InterClubs Fun Royale with one other friend for spring break. Being two single students, we had the time of our lives. The staff here was totally the best! They were always eager to help in any way, and they made sure you had a great time by getting you involved in the daily activities. There was nightly entertainment and the last night before we left there was a big beach party. It was soo much fun!

The food was great! There was a lot of variety at each restaurant and the drinks from 10am until 2am were excellent. Even on the beach everything was free.

We met a lot of great people and made some good friends who we've kept in touch with since our trip. I would definitely recommend this resort to students or anyone who wants to go out have a great time and meet lots of new people.

The staff was very funny and involved; they made our holiday special. The shows were brilliant every night filled with talent you would see in theatres around London. InterClubs Fun Royale is an excellent place for groups to go and have fun, but is just as good for couples. You will meet so many people. They had day-to-day activities for everyone ranging from darts to games of football and volleyball. I would not hesitate to go back again! Well done—thanks for a wonderful two weeks.

Fun Tropical was the best hotel I have gone to so far; it had the best staff, food, facilities, etc. The rooms were very nice especially the one we stayed in which had two king size beds and a sofa-bed, kitchen and freezer.

I would recommend this resort to anyone even if it is a 4-star, it is wonderful.

I met some nice people, and I especially liked the "Surprise Show." I hope to go back soon. I stayed here during Dominican Father's Day weekend of 2000.
