4.0 stars This was a great value for the money. Visited: October 2009

Our family just returned from 12 days at this resort, and it was excellent. The hotel, staff, service, food, drink, pool, and beach were all great.

The reason for rating this four rather than five stars was because of a couple of very minor things. The bedrooms, although very spacious and clean, needed updating. In addition, the evening entertainment was good, but a bit dated.

Please do not be put off by these minor things, as this is a great value for the money. It was a resort that my family will definitely go back to. I recommend it, and feel it was worth the nine-hour flight.

4.0 stars It's a good hotel - but beware. Visited: June 2007

I just returned from Gran Ventana where I went to get married.

The resort was beautiful. It was very clean, and well maintained with beautiful gardens and a wonderful white sandy beach. It also had a perfect clear blue sea and some lovely coral for top snorkeling.

There was plenty of selection in the food and drink, and most of the staff seemed to work very hard to keep guests entertained.

However, while I was here, we were checked into the Beata building. It was facing the road at the back of the hotel. At first all was fine until the music from the night club started - "boom, boom, boom" - until 4:30 am! This was my first night.

I asked to move, and was accommodated straight away. In our new room we could still hear the music, but it didn't stop us from sleeping.

Then, a day after the wedding, I had 8,000 Dominican Pesos (£160) and £50 stirling stolen from the room. I reported this to reception, and then the police. I was told I could wait three to five hours, and then pay £100 and obtain a police report. It was not worth it.

Also, beware of people selling you things in and around the resort. The exchange rate is very poor, and everyone is out to make a killing out of you.

Apart from the incidents I mentioned earlier, it was a good hotel.
Just be careful!

4.0 stars Grand Ventana has everything for everyone. Visited: May 2007

My husaband and I enjoyed one week at the Gran Ventana, and we came away feeling very chilled out.

From the moment we arrived, we were presented with an efficient service from very happy, friendly people.

Everywhere was clean. They had three sections to the buffet restaurant, and two were used while one was being cleaned. They did this on a rotation.

Being a vegetarian, I was a little concerned about what food to expect. There was something for everyone. Some foods were cooked to order - like omlettes, eggs, smoothies and waffles.
Lunch time seemed no different from dinner, with a large quantity and a vast array of food.

The beach was beautiful with white sand and turquiose waters, and they cleaned it of debris every morning. However, on the beach, you need to get up at 5:30 a.m to get a parasol as there was a gentle breeze and many people burned.

The rooms were clean and functional, and were serviced by the friendly maids each day. We tipped $1 a day as they are not paid very much. Some tour reps will collect any unwanted toiletries and give them to the maids.

The entertainment team was great. They were very friendly and very enthusiastic. They worked long hours and put a lot of effort into what they do. I liked the fact that if guests were interested in joining in aqua aerobics or the bike tour - great. But they didn't push you to participate.

To sum up, they had great staff, it was very clean, they served fabulous food, and it was a great place. We hope to go next year, and this time take the children.

One final note: The porters at the airport will try to extract as much cash from you as posible. We were asked for $10, some $20. He picked our case up, and put it on the coach. He even put ours on the wrong coach. Try to have a $1 bill to hand out, and keep a close eye on your case.

It was very convenient, and the staff was lovely. The poolside swim-up bar was a wonderful idea. Also, the property was gorgeous.

4.0 stars This was an amazing holiday! Visited: July 2006

I stayed at Gran Ventana last summer for two weeks, and found it absolutely amazing. It was definitely the best holiday I have ever had, and I am keen to go again.

Everyone was very friendly, including the bar staff and entertainers - who were all great.

I have read a few reviews about this hotel, and it seems some people were not too impressed with the food. However, I had no problem with it.

The main restaurant was a buffet, and had a variety of foods each day. There was also an offer of another two a la carte restaurants which were also very nice. Again, the staff was great in both the buffet and the a la carte restaurants. They were very hard-working and polite.

Overall, I really enjoyed this holiday and will definitely go again in the near future. I recommend Gran Ventana to anyone!

I recently returned from the Gran Ventana Beach Resort. I would like to say to anyone thinking of going - go ahead and go!

The entertainment was great. There were a lot of dancing shows, and the animation team played their jobs well and helped guests have a comfortable stay. They also seemed to become guests' best friends rather quickly.

I enjoyed the food. It was mainly traditional Dominican food. There was a little stand every night for dinner, which had delicious Dominican dishes. If you are a fussy eater, there was always chips or pasta on offer, too.

The hotel was pretty clean. Although, once or twice we spotted the odd cockroach. The maids did their jobs well, though, and always greeted us with a smile and "Hola!".

The weather was good, although we had one or two rain storms. They were over quickly, though.

If your rep tells you to not go into Puerto Plata because it is dangerous, I can tell you now that is absolute rubbish. I believe they only say it because they want you to book trips with their companies, and not go wondering off on your own.

And if you have kids, I suggest you visit Ocean World - it was great.

I am twenty years old, and I thought there would not be much to do here - but I was wrong! The entertainment was on every night. Although, it wasn't so good at times. The entertainment staff was the best, though.

The rest of the hotel was brilliant. The hotel rooms were nice and clean, and so was the dining area. On the beach there were people trying to sell different things. They didn't hassle you if you weren't interested.

Outside of the hotel were a couple of clubs/pubs which were called Hemmingway's and Roadway. They were the best places to be at night.

The only bad thing about this holiday was having to leave. I've been on loads of different holidays, and this was the best.

I found only one fault with this hotel. The night entertainment was not for me. I felt that I needed somewhere to relax with soft music.

I have to admit this holiday was absolutely amazing. The entertainers were amazing. Angel and Danny were brilliant. I hope to come back here and see them soon.

The whole property was amazing. The hotel had everything that we needed - pool, gym, snooker and table tennis room. And the beaches were brilliant.

The mall was quite big, and had quite good shops - there which I didn't expect.

I really want to go back - and I will. I can't wait!

It was the best holiday ever.

There was so much to do with the beach right in front of it. The pool was great. The entertainers were very good. They were all up for a chat and having a good time with the guests.

It was just fabulous.

This was the best holiday we have ever had.

The animation team was great, too! We enjoyed the food and the rooms, and the people were really friendly - nothing at fault! The staff would always make us feel welcome.

A word of warning - wear shoes around the poolside - the ground is scorching hot!

5.0 stars We loved every second of our stay here! Visited: April 2006

I'm 16, and I stayed at the Gran Ventana for two weeks with my parents and 10-year-old brother over the Easter period. I loved every single second of it (even the tropical showers). I was very sad to be leaving.

The food was great with such a huge selection to choose from. The waiters made the dining experience even better as they were so friendly and cheerful. All of the staff (especially the men!) showered me with attention and were only happy when I was happy. They seemed to want to do anything for the guests to make their stay better.

Every part of the hotel was spotless, and I wasn't surprised as everywhere I went I saw the maids cleaning! The entertainment was a little naff, but fantastic for a good laugh! The entertainment crew was great, and worked such long hours. It was obvious that they loved their jobs.

When it came time to check out, I was really upset to be leaving. I wish I could have stayed another two weeks! I'm already missing the friendliness and charm of the Domincans.

I will definitely come back to Gran Ventana sometime in the future. After hearing what a great time I had, my friends are insisting we go there during sixth form. I can't wait.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to other people. I had a ball!

This was our first time in the Dominican Republic.
My partner and I - and two children (aged 10 and 16) came. What a fine place it was!

The hotel was spotless. The maids were cleaning morning, noon, and night. They were also very friendly.

The bar staff and waiters were like best friends to everybody. Wiltord was one of the waiters who made our stay so funny. As long as we were happy, they were too.

The food was grand. They did everything from pizza to lobster. The dining area was spotless. However, we had the odd bird get in while we were eating. We didn’t mindit, though.

The rooms were a bit dated, but they were spotless. The mini bar was filled up every day. Towels were provided for us to take on trips, so we wished we hadn’t taken any of our own because they cleaned all the towels every day.

The pool was first class and, again, cleaned every day - as was everything else.

We did a few trips - monster truck, dolphin swim, and Paradise Island. All were fantastic. This was an exceptional holiday in every way. We will go back soon.

4.0 stars Here we go again! Visited: January 2006

We have stayed at the Grand Ventana eight times. We loved everything about it - the food, the people, the beach, and especially the golf.

We are actually going again in January 2008. We have already booked and are looking forward to going.

If anyone is looking for a great excape, this would be the place. The only thing that stinks about it is that there are too many kids. If it was all adults, we would give this place a 10.

See you there!

4.0 stars Gran Ventana Beach was nice and clean, with good food and good staff. Visited: January 2006

The facilities were nice and very clean. The food was good, and there was a variety to select from. Also, the staff was friendly, and the entertainment good.

However, the quiet pool and building were not so quiet. Not only was there a lot of noise at the pool bar each night, the disco next door at a neighbour resort went to the early hours of the morning. I would suggest the management shut down the bar at the quiet pool at 8:00 p.m. and that guests wanting quiet not stay in rooms on the back side of the south building.

I've just come back from this hotel, and it was the best holiday I've ever had. The food was good, and the room was only about 50 steps away from the beach and 30 from the pool.

There were loads of kids, and it was a really friendly place. And if you don't like the energetic side of the resort, you can go to the quiet pool and it is like paradise.

You have to come here!

This hotel was amazing! I really enjoyed myself here. My advice is to join in on any games, and your stay will be fabulous. The entertainment crew was amazing and always made guests happy.

Also, the food was amazing. But don't eat too much during the first couple of days (it made me sick).

I would also recommend snorkeling. It was wonderful. And the "Dominican Discovery" was wonderful, too. It was interesting to get to see the way people live here. It was breathtaking.
