After the disgruntled views, I feel compelled to state how absolutely wonderful our stay was in Casa de Campo.
First, let me say that if you're looking for the typical Caribbean resort (long white sand beaches, huge pools, waterslides, and dance contests), this is not for you.
Casa is what I call a resort for adults. It's more than a resort, it's something like a small principality with an enormous staff of kind people willing to serve your every need.
We dined on lobster, filet mignon and sushi, and sipped endless Margaritas. We rode horses, kayaked, tried skeet shooting, saw a polo match, hit golf balls and yes, lounged on the beach.
As for honesty, one day I left my room safe open with cash for the taking! I returned to the room and the maid had notified security who safely locked it up for me. Not a dime was missing.
As for the bill, we had the all-inclusive plan, and left extra cash tips (10% was already included) as we went when we felt it was appropriate.
Check out took one minute, and we were not charged anything more. In fact, they even forgave (didn't charge us!) a couple of mini-bar items. They were gracious people.
I don't understand the confusion on the part of the other travelers in this regard. It might help to actually read the information they provide or ask a question!
We had been here twice before as guests when we did some volunteer work in the country. But this was the first time we stayed as vacationers. I now have trouble thinking about going anywhere else. |

I've traveled the globe and stayed at mediocre hotels before, but this place took the cake.
Casa de Crappo was basically a glorified motel. The rooms were disgusting - it truly felt like I was roughing it.
As for the service: The staff didn't replace towels, soap and shampoo. Also, the gym smelled and had limited A/C. In addition, there were no towels when I was there, and the spa shower had no soap - and none could be provided when asked. Maybe 20% spoke or seemed to understand English.
Do yourself a favor and avoid this "resort". Friends did stay in villa. It was better, but not much. They still had a bad beach and bad services.
The food was below par at all the restaurants on premises. It was overpriced, also. I would never return to this property. |

I spent one week at Casa De Campo. I don't even know where to begin to describe this surreal experience. The bottom line is that nothing works the way it should at this overpriced US$ vacuum cleaner.
I would give one star for the staff who really try hard to make things work. Particular kudos to Racio Alba at the concierge desk.
The restaurants are mediocre and overpriced, and the beach is tiny. The place is huge, so you get a golf cart (it's gasoline, not electric so the whole place stinks of exhaust fumes). You can use it until your cart vanishes, and you have to get a replacement (it happened to me twice in seven days).
And, think you have a cab reserved? Think again. Double and triple check, because each time it's like starting over. We'll have to dispute a $250 fee for transportation services we never received with our credit card company.
Basically, this was an inept, overpriced, smelly exercise in frustration. If you're unfortunate enough to end up here, bring plenty of US dollars. The resort bank will give you pesos for dollars, but not the other way around.
Also, you can't get a reservation for dinner (a common problem even though the restaurants were 70% empty)? No problem, just show up and act like you have one, because they can't tell if you do or not.
With so many great resorts in the Caribbean, I see no reason to come here (unless you wait until the last minute like we did and can't get in anywhere else). |

I just got back from Casa de Campo three days ago, and I must say, it was a beautiful place. The people were nice. Unlike reviews I've read, I did not get anything stolen from my room. Also, I thought the food was fantastic! Altos de Chavon was amazing. You have to see it in person in order to appreciate its beauty.
What went wrong? Although I had the all-inclusive (which was optional), the tipping was "supposed" to be included...that is, if you like to tip only 10%.
Also, when using the all-inclusive restaurants, we got a bill at the end of the meal (we averaged about $140/meal for two people) that it was charged to our room. They were supposed to credit the amount at the end of our stay because it was part of our all-inclusive deal.
When we checked out of the resort, we spent so much time reviewing the bill and making sure that we were not overcharged (which they did by $30).
The great thing about Casa de Campo was that room service was part of the all-inclusive deal, but beware that they charge $5 per person for each meal delivered. I only had my meal delivered once, and they got my order wrong. But please don't get me wrong, it was still very good.
If you are young and looking for a place to party, this is not the place for you. Casa de Campo means "Country Home", and it is supposed to be a relaxing place where rich people rent or own villas. During our stay, the "disco" was being repaired and I was stuck on the sports bar every late night with three other old folks...not so fun.
The beach was not that great. Yes, it was man made, but the water was very nice and warm. I stayed during the off season, so the resort was completely dead. Worst of all, it rained four of the five days of my stay. If you are looking for a better beaches, you should go to Punta Cana (way cheaper) and not here.
Would I again? Yes! I loved the place. The food was great, the people were friendly, and the golf carts were great to get around the resort (they were included in the all-inclusive deal).
I am planning on going back next year with all of my 30-year-old friends and create our own scene. You must go horseback riding, and if you are a golfter, spend the $200 and go play!
Also take advantage of the free sport shooting. It was fun! Last but not least, if you have a large enough family or group of friends, go for the villas. I had a chance to view two, and my mouth dropped! They were beautiful! |

We rented a private villa and had the best time of our lives. There was never a lack of something to do, and the people were very friendly---including the locals!
We felt very safe, and our teenagers had a great time! The villa was located within walking distance to the beach, and it was just beautiful. Also, the maids were very nice.
The restaurants were fantastic, and the beach was a lot of fun. Los Lagos 7 offered everything the owners advertised and more. Enjoy! |

I went with my family for five days and we had an awesome time. You must visit Altos de Chavon! It was absolutely breathtaking.
The marina was also a must. There were many huge yachts there and we got to go out on the docks to look at them. At both places there were lots of reasturants, and the food was pretty good every where we ate. But it be prepared to wait on your food because they like to keep you there awhile!
The resort itself was very nice - very well kept, very nice people and lots of tropical plants everywhere. One thing we did was rent a golf cart for the day and we went around to look at the huge houses on the hotel's enormous property! The beach was fabulous, too.
The only thing I wished was for the rooms to look out onto the ocean. I would recommend this resort highly to everyone! It was a great resort. |

Much of what you read is precisely true: it is a beautiful facility, an incredible bargain for what you get, but the service can be bad. The short version is like this: everyone I had talked to had been there at least once and as many as 10 times before. There were yachts, Jaguars and BMW's everywhere. So not to sound shallow, but it was clearly a very nice place. The service could at times be brutal, however.
The people there are extremely friendly—more so than most places we have gone. However, between the language barrier (which was significant at times) and the whole "Caribbean pace", you really need to be diligent about things that matter.
Once you are settled in, however, the facility is beautiful, the restaurants are great, and there are lots of interesting things to do. If things had run smoother (I listed some examples below), it would definitely be a 5-star hotel. For the money, it was a steal.
The problems we had included a very slow check-in (1 hour); confusion over bills; cribs arrived an hour later than promised; "all inclusive cards" (the primary method of payment) were an hour later than promised; outdated and incorrect guest book; our dinner reservations were messed up; room service was 1 hour later than promised; and leaving (via La Romana) was a near disaster. |

When my travel agent first suggested a trip to the Dominican Republic I thought her idea was ridiculous. However, she convinced my husband and me that it would be fabulous. She couldn't have been more right.
I have never seen a resort with more features and activities, nor a resort staff so friendly and obliging. There was so much to do at Casa de Campo that a week's stay was hardly enough time.
The food was magnificent - even the breakfast buffet was out of this world. A real treat was the fact that room service was included as part of our all-inclusive package.
There was so much to do at this beautiful, amazingly scenic resort (Altos de Chavon, golf, horseback riding, tennis, guided day trip to Santo Domingo ... or nothing!). Do not be dismayed by the fact that a shuttle ride is required to get to the beach. Free shuttles were virtually always available and it took only moments to get from the lobby to the sandy shores.
I highly recommend renting a golf cart so you can get to the beach on your own and do some exploring in the meantime. I can't wait to go back! |

We have 3 young kids, who came with us along with another couple (no kids). Golf, weather and beach were excellent. Food was ok. The best restaurants were Tropicana and Pescador. Altos de Chavon was pretty, but very small and food was way overrated (pizza place the best?!).
We encountered numerous problems at the resort (we did not leave the resort at any time). They tried to stick us in a villa that was in poor condition and was as far away from our request as possible. We relocated to another closer villa, but the accommodations were still weak. We didn't have hot water for 5 days! The Jacuzzi was broken and no one could give us any help.
The service from the Excel club was was poor. Half the time we were greeted with a blank face, the other half "yessed" to death. |

My husband and I traveled to Casa de Campo with another couple during the Caribbean’s very quiet off season. We found this huge resort, complete with its own amazing reproduction of a 16th Century Mediterranean village, to be wonderful--from the fabulous food, especially at the La Piazetta (Italian), Tropicana (steak), and El Pescador (seafood), to the friendly staff. Service was very good in all areas of the resort, although if you do not speak Spanish it's a good idea to make certain that whoever you are talking to speaks and understands English--sometimes they fake it!
If you are a golfer, Casa de Campo is paradise! Teeth of the Dog is a gorgeous, challenging, and enjoyable course, with several holes running along the beautiful, blue Caribbean water--reason enough for a visit (or two or three...)!
While I can't comment on all of the accommodations, the second floor luxury room we stayed in was spacious and comfortable with a large walk-in closet, sitting area, balcony porch, and cathedral ceiling. I would have rated the resort 5 stars if the bathrooms were larger and the housekeeping service was better. Rooms were tidy, but cleaned/checked only once per day in the late afternoon, towels were limited and we had to request (the included) bathrobes,
Overall, this resort ranks among my favorite in the Caribbean. The beach is small, but lovely. The resort is huge, but is friendly and feels cozy. There is more to do here than you can imagine, but doing nothing is equally enjoyable!

Visualize: A beautiful, 5-bedroom villa on its own large, landscaped grounds, a full-time maid and butler, tennis carts to take you to the 13 lighted, soft tennis courts, great beach with all water sports, a dozen great restaurants, an "ancient" city up on a hill, polo, horseback riding, a private airport just 5 minutes away -- and the wonderful, friendly Dominicans. |

As someone from the Caribbean, I have to say that this was an excellent resort. It was a beautiful secure property. I had great fun with the golf carts. But above all, the service and friendliness of the staff were beyond compare. A must for those who want a little pampering and relaxation. |

I can see why the resort's tag line is "undiscovered gem." My husband and I were engaged at Casa de Campo nearly nine years ago and we secretly hope it will not be discovered! We have traveled extensively throughout the area as well as Hawaii and can honestly state you will not find any resort that compares in value.
It is a sprawling oasis that is very self-contained. We did venture out to La Romana for some excellent meals as well as traveled around the coast for some of the most unforgettable meals - lobster lunches (caught that morning by local fishermen) in small villages. Check out Altos de Chavon—it is magical! The golf and tennis facilities are as good as anywhere! We have turned several neighbors on to the resort and they back up our claims and cannot say enough about the wonderful time they've had. |
