5.0 stars This was the best ever. Visited: June 2009

We stayed at the Spice Island Resort in June for 14 nights. We chose the Seagrape Beachfront suite. Although this was not the most luxurious choice at Spice, the location was wonderful. We just opened our patio door and we were on the beach!

The food was very good, and the staff was very helpful. We just asked, and it was done. It was not a cheap holiday. However, it was so good, I plan to go back.

5.0 stars We had a wonderful stay! Visited: April 2004

My family of four had a wonderful stay at the Spice Island Beach Resort. The location was magnificent. The staff was the nicest I've ever encountered in many stays at various Caribbean islands. The food was good, and I'm not usually an all-inclusive sort. I loved this resort.

5.0 stars It was absolutely superb. Visited: November 2003

We have stayed at the Spice Island Beach Resort five or six times now - I have lost count! I can honestly say that visiting the resort is like coming home. The staff are welcoming and friendly, and the hotel is spotlessly clean.

Also, the food is excellent with a strong emphasis on local cuisine and local flavors. The island feels (and is) very safe, and the beach vendors are polite and take no for an answer.

The first time we visited was nearly a disaster due to the travel company forgetting to tell the hotel we were coming. We arrived late at night with no reservations and they took us in, promising to sort it all out in the morning. Which they did. Try that at any hotel in the UK!

The service is slower than in the UK, and occasionally requests are overlooked, but the ethos isn't about snappy rapid efficient throughput, it's about enjoying a more relaxed pace of life.

If you are looking for an action-packed lively holiday with lots of nightlife, or wall to wall activities to take the children off your hands, then Grenada isn't for you. If you want to chill out completely amid gorgeous surroundings, superb food and friendly people - book the Spice Island Beach Resort!

We are already planning our next visit.

5.0 stars Better and better. Visited: November 2003

We have just returned from our second visit to the Spice Island Beach Resort. Comments from our first visit in 2001 are also on this review board.

First time around we thought the resort was good so we were a little apprehensive in case it did not live up to our expectations. In fact it is even better now!

Our room was a garden view (1st floor) with views across Grand Anse Beach to the harbour at St George’s, absolutely perfect.

The food is tremendous in variety and quality. Excellent selection at breakfast, good lunch and an ever-changing Dinner selection. Take a tip and try the local Roti as a main course for lunch!

The bar area is immaculate with wonderful staff only too willing to help you with exotic combinations involving the local rum. No drink can faze them!

All the staff in the hotel are excellent and extremely happy to look after you, we really cannot speak highly enough about them. The owner is around daily and is very hands on. If you are lucky you may get invited to the cocktail party at his house.

For the Divers, Aquanauts are located on the beach at the hotel and run at least 2 dive trips each day. Everyone speaks very highly about them.

The beach itself is cleaned regularly; there are plenty of loungers for everyone, now with cushions!! The beach is quite steep at the water so your are soon unable to touch the bottom, this may not be suitable for everybody though.

In case of interest here are some notes on the trips we went on:

Whale Watching: this time we managed to see 5 or 6 Sperm Whales which was first. The boat leaves just down the beach and the best idea is to wander down dollars in hand and ask how many are going that day. You want a day with not too many as the front of the boat can get a little crowded.

Catarmaran: this was a trip with St James Travel, excellent value with on 12 (max) on the boat. When they look after the cruise ships that can take up to 60 so you can see how relaxing it was.

St Georges: we really suggest you try the trip to St George’s for the local Saturday market. This is something else and the price of the trip is less than the taxi fare on your own!

5.0 stars It was Heaven on earth. Visited: May 2003

In my opinion, Terry and Alison's review reflected they must be impossible to please.

The setting on Grand Anse was beautiful. I saw one water craft get within 100 feet of the shore the entire week. Our room was literally two feet from the beach.

During our first night, our air conditioning was not working properly. So, at 7:30 a.m. we called, and it was fixed by 8:30 a.m.

The room was spacious and clean. I only saw three bugs - that was it. The pool, which I think we used once, was perfect for what it was there for - to relax and chill.

The food was just right, and room service was a must and was always served fresh and with a smile. Speaking of smiles, the service was always done with one and never a grumble from anyone. Yes, it might have been slow, but that is the way it is in the islands - relax! This resort was made for relaxing.

My fiance got a massage and loved it. Aquanuts could not have been nicer for scuba diving, and Carib Cats was magical for the sunset.

All in all, this was a first-class resort, in a first-class location. When you put that on top of an engagement, it truly made for one of the finest, first-rate, down-to-earth, resorts anywhere.

4.0 stars A good hotel but could be much better. Visited: March 2003
Posted by terryowen
We visited in March 2003 and enjoyed our stay but we felt that some small changes would have made the hotel so much better.

We stayed on an all-inclusive basis and would recommend this to others. The food was truly excellent and not having to constantly sign chits mad for a relaxing experience. I normally struggle with hotel menus but not so at this place! Overall though the service was somewhat hit and miss. In the restaurants the service was usually okay but improved noticeably if the hotel owner was visiting. The maid service was excellent, so normally was the bar service. Most reception staff, however, was unhelpful and even rude, witness on young lady who took to barging into the gents around 21:30 pm to switch off the air conditioning. (It should not have been switched off until 23:00 hrs). When she did this to me for the second consecutive night I complained to the resort manager Brian Hardy.

Air conditioning in the guest rooms was temperamental requiring the doors not just to be shut but also line up with the sensors. It appeared to be working as it was blowing air but with the compressor not running there was no cooling effect. Even when the doors were positioned ok it would only work when it could detect someone moving around in the room. This meant you could not leave it on and come back to a cold room. At night you needed to stay on top of the bedclothes and move around for it to stay working.

Mosquitoes and sand flies proved quite troublesome. The rooms were supposed to be sprayed each night but this was not always effective and a heated 'coil' such as those supplied by other hotels in the Caribbean would have been helpful.

Grande Anse beach was good for swimming most of the time but there was no area set aside for swimming. Sometimes water scooters ridden at high speed by young locals came very close to the shore making swimming and snorkeling extremely hazardous. The hotel's pool was not ideal for swimming and it was it was difficult to see the edges of the various steps. They need marking with white paint.

The hotel's 24-hour security staff did an excellent job of making us feel safe and in ensuring that the many beach vendors were not too troublesome.

The 'business room' contained one very slow computer that just took forever to download even small emails. The minimum charge of $10 US plus taxes per use was outrageous.

We like Grenada and will probably return but we would try another hotel.

4.0 stars Spice Island was in a fantastic location. Visited: February 2003

My family and I had a wonderful time in Grenada and at Spice Island Beach Resort. The location was marvelous at Grand Anse Beach!

They had a beautiful pool and pool area. They also had a wonderful restaurant! The food was excellent, and the staff was very, very friendly and service-minded.

Sometimes though, some staff members were a bit unorganized (forgot to order taxis when we had arranged it the day before, no extra beds even if it was confirmed etc.),. It didn´t bother us that much, but those little things were the reason I didn´t rate Spice Island Beach resort five stars.

The island itself was definitely five stars and I do recommend a visit to this beautiful island and a stay at Spice Island Beach Resort!

5.0 stars We had a honeymoon to remember. Visited: October 2002
Posted by pkenny00
After doing extensive research on where to spend our honeymoon, we decided on the Spice Island Resort. It was the best decision we have made as a couple so far.

The resort was beautiful. We upgraded to a Grand private pool suite and it was worth every penny. It was a perfect choice for a couple who doesn’t want to be disturbed. It was away from people walking on the beach and totally private (a huge wall surrounded the private pool).

The beach was beautiful and unlike the other Caribbean islands we visited, we were rarely bothered by people selling different things. We had the occasional passer-by ask us to purchase something, but a simple “no” usually was all they needed. And, for additional piece of mind, they had a security office on staff watching the beach so you could swim without worries.

In October, Spice Island’s beach was fairly deserted being the slow season. So at times, it was just us and the security guard watching our stuff. People thought we were celebrities.

Another thing I found amazing was how friendly the people of Grenada were. On some of the other islands we have visited, we felt like unwanted outsiders or we were even scared. In Grenada, we felt welcome.

One day during a tour of the island, an older man walked up to us when we were sitting on a beach many of the locals swam at, and he talked to us for awhile. The first question out of his mouth was “How do you like paradise?” He wasn’t selling anything, he was just proud of his homeland. It was nice to see.

I can’t say enough about the place. Everything was excellent - the food, rooms, staff, manager and the drinks. The only thing I can think of was that we had to ask twice to get more beer in our fridge, and that was it! If you pass by a chance to stay the Spice Island Resort you will regret it.

4.0 stars A good value, high four-star resort. Visited: July 2002
Posted by lizcamisa
We visited Spice Island in July of this year, and had a very relaxing seven days!

The beachfront rooms were definitely worth the upgrade as we were right on the beach! We had wonderfully huge walk-in showers, and pleasant and colorful well-equipped rooms. Some of the rooms had not been refurbished and were a little dated, though.

The food was excellent - for an all-inclusive resort. And there were many choices.

The staff was very friendly compared with staff on other islands in the Caribbean. Brian Harding, the efficient and friendly manager, was always on hand to offer help and suggestions.

Grenada was very pretty and lush island with various excursions on offer, such as a visit to the spice plantation, rum distillery and rainforest. St. Georges, the capital, was nothing to write home about. Our children of 10 and 14 were a little bored until they made friends on the last couple of days. The hotel could really do with some kind of activities for children. All in all, we had a very pleasant stay!

5.0 stars A fabulous place for a wedding! Visited: May 2002
Posted by sue_kingsley
After much careful consideration, we decided to have our wedding at Spice Island. It was the best decision we could have made.

The resort was in the most beautiful location right on Grand Anse Beach. From the moment we arrived, we were treated wonderfully - always being referred to by name and not a room number!

The restaurant and bar facilities could not have been better - we have never seen such a wide and varied menu for an all-inclusive resort. The rooms were extremely spacious and kept wonderfully clean and tidy.

Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff - yes, in a typical Caribbean way, things could be a little slow in happening but isn't that the joy of the Caribbean?

The wedding itself was perfect - held in the gardens under a pergoda which had been decorated with fresh flowers that morning. Hermione, our wedding coordinator, made sure all of the legalties were in order (coming with us to the officiators office on her day off) - there really was nothing for us to worry about.

Make sure you take the time to take some trips around the island - the people are lovely and there are some fascinating things to see.

All in all, it was a perfect location for a perfect holiday. We would highly recommend Spice Island Beach Resort to anyone looking for a relaxing, romantic holiday.

5.0 stars A great location, atmosphere, beach and diving opportunities. Visited: November 2001
Posted by achalfen
The Spice Island Resort is not a glitzy five star place. But it is the best of what a hotel should be to me - personal but not overbearing, beautiful but complementary to its lovely surroundings, luxurious but not formal.

It tends to have quieter guests than most all-inclusive places, which suited everyone here just fine. I could have improved the odd thing here and there, but it's hardly worth mentioning, because everything that is important is done beautifully - including the food and great cocktails and very friendly staff.

Mr Hopkin, the owner / manager is justly proud of the resort and I look forward to coming back. Not least because the diving, provided on-site by Aquanauts. It is spectacular and well executed - again the professionalism involved is admirable.

5.0 stars Best of the best. Visited: November 2001

We have just returned from two weeks at Spice Island Resort (November 2001). I would agree with all the other contributors who praise the resort.

Service is always first class and the rooms are very well equiped. Our room on the first floor was large and airy with both a sitting area and balcony. The latter had views over the beach to St Georges. The only problem was a shower with a mind of its own as far as pressure and temperature went, but this seems to be the case anywhere in the Caribbean.

The food was excellent with a daily changing Dinner menu. We never had the same menu in 14 days which says something. They now have a new chef as well so it may become even better.

The pool is one of the best we have ever used, next to the bar and the beach. The Beach is Grand Anse, the best on the island.

Although the Hotel is great do go out and explore the island. Two trips we went on were the Whale Watching (no whales as it was the wrong time of year but scores of dolphins) and the Round Grenada Tour (8 hours). Do check on numbers as these can get crowded although we were very lucky.

Also try to get into the capital (St Georges) one of the least developed in the Caribbean. Avoid a day when the cruise ships are in!

In conclusion, the whole resort and island were so enjoyable that we will definitely return soon.

5.0 stars Tranquility in a busy world. Visited: March 2001
Posted by almwann
We just returned from a wonderfully relaxing two-week break. This is a great place to
switch off from the stresses of life.

The hotel is indeed worthy of the money that was spent to renovate it, with lots of space
and a very airy feel. It is perfectly located at the best end of Grand Anse beach and so it
does not suffer from the usual beach traffic of tourists. A walk to the other end of the
beach and back takes a good hour or so. Beach vendors are present, but not that much as
they tend to congregate at a separate Beach Vendors Market established further down the
beach.

Getting out of the taxi, views of the beach and ocean are immediate and stay with you
wherever you go. Don't be put off by any exterior pictures of the beach rooms. They are
just perfect in person, right on the edge of the beach, with a terrace, great views. Inside
they are large and airy with a large whirlpool bath and a large separate shower--all first
rate. We went all-inclusive, which also included full room service and mini-bar!

The food was excellent. If you wanted all the courses, lunch was three and dinner was
five, along with afternoon tea if you still had room. Not a case or quantity over quality as
the quality was also top rate.

The facilities are all that can be asked for - a good spa, a gym with all of the essentials, a
well maintained tennis court and the pool is just right. (Although with such a warm and
inviting sea it is not used that much.)

All of the staff is exceedingly friendly and helpful from the maids and cleaners right up to
the management and owner.

Spice Island Diving (the dive shop) is a two-minute walk from the main building and is run
by a very friendly team. We also visited La Source, which is one of our other options but
we think that their beach, pool, eating areas and room location is not as good as those at
Spice Island Beach Resort.

During our stay, the average age was around 55, (not sure if that is typical) so if you are
looking for somewhere with a bit younger clientele, this may not be the place for you. But
having 20 years or so before reaching that age bracket we still had a wonderful time. It
will definitely be on the list of options for next year.

5.0 stars Spice Island should be rated 10 stars! Visited: December 2000

We have just returned from Grenada and felt the need to share our experience with other travelers. This is our 8th trip to this wonderful island and our 6th stay at Spice Island Beach Resort. This time we brought friends along to share our home away from home. Spice Island Beach Resort is the best hotel on in Grenada, located on the most beautiful beach in the Caribbean.

The Hopkins family has just completed an extensive renovation, making this great resort more elegant. The resort is run by an extremely friendly family, who oversees a friendly efficient and accommodating staff—all of which are dedicated to making your time spent with them memorable.

The food has always been excellent, but with the addition of a new chief, Oliver's has become a gourmet restaurant with outstanding selections from Breakfast through dinner, presented in the fashion of the world’s finest fare. We also noticed that unlike most all-inclusive resorts, the bartenders are versed in preparing not only exotic island drinks, but cocktails as well. Their liquor is top shelf (not the usual watered down local) and their wines are the finest.

The suits are meticulously clean and very well furnished. Every convenience is available. Each room has a whirlpool bath and some have both a bath and a splash pool. They have just added a beautiful pool and Jacuzzi on the property, yet one wonders why, when just several steps away is the most beautiful beach in the Caribbean. The beach is kept immaculately clean by hotel personnel, and vendors are friendly and kept to a minimum. They understand the words "no," unlike many other islands that I have visited.

My only disappointment is the addition of cable TV to the rooms. My husband and I enjoyed being cut off from News/Sports/Sitcoms and found ourselves again each time we vacationed here.

If you are looking for a friendly, spectacular holiday, Spice Island Beach Resort is the place. We are already planning our next two trips and can hardly wait to return.

I stayed at the Spice Island Beach Resort last August 1999, and must say that the ambiance and service were truly first-rate. The inclusive breakfast was made to order and/or buffet style by the most friendly and courteous chef I have ever had the pleasure to be served by. I can't wait to see her again.

I went in the off-season and went on numerous eco-tours arranged by the staff--much to my pleasure. I had a great time.
