What a special place! Let me try to do it justice.
Outside our pretty and beautifully appointed cottage was a large tree where green iguanas basked in the sun just yards from our balcony, while we ate breakfast daily. It became a game ... "I know where the iguana is and you don't."
Later, after a sumptuous breakfast cooked to order by our dear housekeeper, we'd make our way down to snorkel off the dock. I spent three days in the company of an octopus who was feeding on the reef - what a treat! A few days later, I was lucky enough to see three lobsters nestled in crevices right there just feet from the dock.
Night-time brought out the tree frogs who serenaded us as we sipped our rum punches (provided for us by our gracious host, Joe Gaylord). As the last rays of sun faded, and the garden lights came on, I could see several types of insect-eating bats swooping silently through the garden keeping down the mosquito population. Occasionally, a screech owl would fly past us during cocktail hour. We also slept wonderfully in a huge king size super-comfortable bed, lulled to sleep by the breaking waves and tree frogs.
So, if your idea of a perfect holiday is: the shrieking laughter of five-year-olds plunging into the hotel pool at 6:00 am, daily parasailing from your hotel, weekly manager's cocktail parties serving bottle-made rum punches in plastic shot glasses, the sounds of TVs blaring through the screened windows, then you should not come to Twelve Degrees North. You won't find any of those things here.
If you love peace and quiet, very special individual attention, being spoiled to death by your hosts and housekeeper, wonderful snorkeling and a dreamy, romantic stay, then you've certainly found the right place. |

Good overall, but Grenada is a challenge. Visited: November 2000 |

Twelve Degrees North was an interesting experience if you are prepared for what it is and what it isn't. It is a very quiet, laid back place where almost nothing happens. There is no air conditioning, no television, no telephone, and if it rains (as it did the entire week we were here), there’s very little to do. This might be a plus for some people. We certainly thought it would be, but it was almost too slow.
The housekeepers are very friendly, but they will be in your apartment starting at about 8:30am every morning and will stay until well after lunch. The owner is very attentive. He gave us several rides into town free of charge and wants to help in any way that he can.
Grenada is beautiful but understand that it is a very foreign country. The people are warm and wonderful. We had a number of interesting conversations with locals whom we found to be very polite and well-informed. Food in restaurants is outrageously expensive. Neither Twelve Degrees nor Grenada were what we expected. That isn't to say that we had a bad time, only that we weren't fully ready for what we got. If you are looking for a true cross-cultural experience in a unique accommodation, we recommend it. Just be aware of what you are signing yourself up for.
