The accomodation was stunning and most of the staff were very helpful, however we stayed at a time when some of the owners friends were staying and despite the age restriction for guests they were able to bring younger children which didnt ensure a quiet holiday. The owners friends were on the whole ok but some were rude and acted as if they owned the place (maybe they were part owners??. We stayed for two weeks and and had a bad experience with the owners friends which soured the remainder of the holiday for us, the owner never spoke to us after that, he was friendly before the incident! Because of that I would not encourage other people to stay because they could be unlucky. |

I am always suprised at the moaning ninnies who write reviews. I think most of them should just stay home and rent a DVD of the area they want to say they visited.
Mosquitoes? For your information, the Manchineal tree is vital for beach stabilization. Maybe if the tree was gone, the beach would disappear also.
I also advise that comparisons be made on a "like" basis. Cap Ju Luca rates are about two or three times LaLuna, and about four times bigger. Why did you stay at such a small hotel with open bathrooms?
This is an excellent, small and cozy hotel with a great atmosphere. The food, I agree, can be hit or miss. But tell the chef -we did and we had great food after that.
Enjoy your holiday. If you don't like insects or trees - stay home. |

We arrived almost at 10:00 pm and went straight to dinner - it was not memorable.
They took us to our cottage, and after five flights of very steep stairs, we got to our cottage. There we found that the A/C had not been turned on, and the only solution provided for the mosquitoes was burning coils (which we stopped using long ago in our island because they're not safe for your lungs nor very efficient).
I can't believe they rent this place without better addressing the issue of the mosquitoes because dengue fever is not seasonal and can kill you and there are many other diseases transmitted by them.
We had brought Off! spray so we were okay, but La Luna must seriously consider installing insect repellent lamps on the terrace of each room and put electric burners in each room, especially the "open air" bathroom .
They moved us to a cottage maybe 100 feet closer to the beach. And, although the stairmaster regime was great for my thighs, they must improve the lighting on the bottom steps. One night I almost fell going down, and twisted and scraped my ankles.
No one came to help because it seemed the staff was too busy talking among themselves. It seemed that when we asked them for something, they looked as if they had better things to do than to answer us. As they say, the employees should be as good as the supervisors. At La Luna, both could improve.
Also, they had poisonous trees on the beach! They warned us in the room about the Manchinel tree. Its sap and the fruit (which falls on the beach) are poisonous and can hurt the skin. I can't believe they have that beach open to the public with those trees!
What if a child (they accept children above ten) were to bite a fruit or somebody was to accidentally touch the tree and get sap into their eyes? I closed my eyes and hoped they had insurance and went snorkeling. But the jet-skis crossing and re-crossing the beach scared me because there weren't any buoys to mark the limit between bathers and water vehicles.
Also, I tried to get a suntan but the "vendors" on the beach were almost as bad as the mosquitoes - they offered us everything from necklaces to drugs.
In general, the place was beautiful, but still needs development and definitely better management. |

Sept 1, 2004: We had come from our fourth visit to Cap Juluca in Anguilla (which by the way is really not 5 but 6 star resort, recently chosen by Travel + Leisure as the top hotel in the Caribbean Bahamas and Bermuda). Upon reaching Laluna our first night we ate at the restaurant: the food is very poor quality, we asked for Mahi Mahi and got another fish (I have been a scuba diver for 18 years and am a very good cook also "modestly speaking") because Mahi Mahi doesn't have fish bones. It began to rain and nobody helped us get another table, we just got wet and our dishes too. We got up to look for our hostess and the waiter just picked up the dishes and nobody said anything, I mean "nothing" o.k. Second, our deluxe beach cottage was supposed to be 12 ft from the beach, it actually was about 200 ft up and away from the beach. The manager said that the girl who booked our reservation was no longer working there so he couldn't know what she told us. They moved us to another cottage closer to the beach but no cottage over there is 12 ft from the water o.k. so take note guys. Third, they sell those cottages supposedly including the best in skin care products, well, they don't even put in hair conditioner (compare against Cap Juluca where you get a full array of complimentary Bulgari skin and hair care products), nor do they put trash bags in the wastebaskets. At Laluna if you want to go to the toilet you better spray yourself first with mosquito repellent (which they don't provide - thank God we had brought the complimentary Off! from Cap Juluca) Laluna provides burning coils which are not very efficient and are a health haz worse than mosquitoes. The toilet area smells funny, because there are plenty of cats over there and mind you we live with 4 persians in our apt. We had great food and a great hostess - Beverly - at The Beach House Rest., just a few steps walking on the beach from Laluna. Definitely the staff at Laluna (except for "Gold" at the water sports) needs to improve a lot, they don't make you feel like even a customer not to say like home, that would be too much to ask. We never had dinner again at Laluna except for breakfast and pizzas at lunch (and for an Italian-owned place the pasta is terrible) and they never got our orders right, there was always something missing and they minded when you asked for the missing items. Only when we checked out did the front office staff treat us somewhat respectfully. After having visited most of the Caribbean (Puerto Rico, Dominican Rep, Virgin Gorda, Tortola, St Thomas, Anguilla, St Martin, etc) and Bahamas, on a scale of 1 to 10, a week in Cap Juluca is an 11 and a week at Laluna is barely a 3. |

I can't believe how anyone can say anything negative about LaLuna. We had a wonderful stay at Laluna and are planning to get married here.
In response to the last review:
1) Sure, there were mosquitoes, show me an island during the hottest season of the year that doesn't have mosquitoes?
2) Poisonous trees, if there poisonous why would one be foolish enough to eat them? There's only one tree, and we never had a problem with it. As long as you didn't sit under the tree, you would be fine. For that matter, don't sit under the coconut trees either, they can be dangerous, too.
3) Everyone at LaLuna was very pleasant. I couldn't say one bad thing about any of the staff. We were treated as royalty. I'm not sure what LaLuna the last poster went to, but it couldn't be the same.
The rooms were just georgeous, and had wonderful views of the ocean and sunsets. Who wouldn't want to climb the stairs to Heaven? |

My husband and I just returned from a four-day, three-night weekend trip to LaLuna, Grenada. It was heaven on earth.
It was beautifully appointed and meticulously maintained. Everyone, staff and other guests, was very friendly and a pleasure to be around.
We did nothing but relax and unwind. The beach was beautiful and the plunge pools, although small, were a great place to relax and soak in the atmosphere. The cottages were very nice and inviting, although some were quite a hike up the hill.
We thought the food was quite good (we are from NYC and eat out on a regular basis), the Italian dishes especially. Everything was made to order and with a European flair (so service might be slower than you are used to, but what is the rush?) My husband thought the wine list was good as well - and surprisingly not overpriced.
We can't wait to go back next year. |

A peaceful and beautiful tropical hideaway. Visited: December 2002 |

My husband and I just returned from a week-long vacation in Grenada and we would highly recommend LaLuna. The cottages were beautiful and looked just like they did in the brochure.
We were in cottage 5, which had an okay view of the ocean (the cottage below us obstructed the view a bit), but it was quite private. I loved the open air showers- what a wonderful way to start the day staring out at bright blue skies and listening to the sounds of the ocean lapping on the beach.
LaLuna’s private beach was beautiful and there was always a free beach chair. We had no problem finding a shady place to curl up with a book. Since the hotel had very few cottages, even though the resort was full, it never felt crowded. There were usually less than 15 guests on the beach or at the poolside bar at any given time.
The service at LaLuna was average. As another reviewer mentioned, the staff was friendly, but wasn’t necessarily the most competent. We were on a SCUBA diving package and setting up dives and transportation to the dive shop always seemed to be a bit of a problem for the front desk staff. The bartenders were all great though- I have never had a better Pina Colada!
I am surprised another reviewer thought the food was not up to par. We lived in Manhattan for four years and dined at some of the top restaurants in the city and found the food at LaLuna to be four star in both presentation and taste.
We were on the meal plan with our dive package, so we ate almost every meal at the hotel and found the food to be delicious. My husband ate grilled lobster tails three nights and also enjoyed the filet mignon. I had fish almost every night and it was always fresh and yummy. I agree the lunch and breakfast menus were a little sparse, but the dinner menu was fabulous.
For SCUBA divers, Grenada had lots of dive sites with pretty coral and an abundance of fish, but was nothing spectacular. Our last trip was to Bonaire, so perhaps we were a bit jaded in our views. We did see lots of extremely large lobsters which was pretty cool.
If you are a bit more experienced, you may want to dive the Bianca C, a shipwreck known as the Titanic of the Caribbean. My husband thought the dive was great- the divemaster even took the group inside a portion of the wreck.
All in all, we found Grenada to be nice, but LaLuna was top notch. It was the perfect place for a quiet, relaxing tropical vacation. If you want a romantic hideaway, this is the place for you.

My husband and I went to Grenada for our honeymoon this past September, and before we left, we tried to make reservations to come back for our five year anniversary, that pretty much sums our experience up.
LaLuna was amazing, and the island of Grenada was just as special. We loved renting a car and driving through the rain forests (and hiking), sailing to other islands, going to the spice market on Friday, lounging around under the shade trees and watching the sunset on our day bed outside.
We thought that the service was impeccable (they couldn't have been any nicer), and the food was fabulous. I think we only ate out for lunch twice.
It is hard to recommened LaLuna to anyone, because I want it to remain a little secret of ours. If you are looking for a place to relax and still have fun, this is the place for you! I wish I could be there now! |

I just returned from my honeymoon at LaLuna, and figured I would add my two cents.
First of all – Grenada was just fantastic (I almost want to keep it a secret it was so nice!). The island was beautiful and the people were all so friendly. My wife and I found LaLuna to exceed our expectations as far as room, location, view and service.
We had cottage #8, which I think had the best view. The privacy was good, but the path to # 9 and #10 went right in front of the deck.
Neither of us was impressed by the food. It could have been that the food we had the first night was an exception, but the tuna I had tasted pretty poor, and the pasta sauce my wife had, tasted like Ragu. Sure, the presentation rivaled some of the better restaurants in Philly, but the taste just wasn’t there.
We did eat at the hotel a few other times, and I do remember enjoying the salami pizza and one of the seafood pasta dishes. I had the hamburger for lunch once, as well as the chicken sandwich. I would stay clear of either. The “hamburger” tasted like a TV-dinner Salisbury steak and the chicken was very dry. The fries were good though.
Service in the restaurant was pretty slow, but I think that most of Grenada was on “island time” anyhow, so it wasn’t a big deal. The staff was very polite and friendly at all times, though. Oh, the worst part about the food at the hotel was the prices. I guess I expected more from a $40 tuna dish that tasted like it was microwaved.
Take advantage of the other restaurants on Grenada, particularly the Beach House Restaurant which was literally on the same beach as LaLuna – just a few hundred feet away. We ate there five times, and the food was always excellent (particularly the Thai Teepee appetizer!). Prices were much more reasonable and the service was faster. Taxis to other restaurants, such as Brown Sugar and the True Blue Resort, were easy and cheap.
One of the big pluses for us about LaLuna was the friendliness of the staff, and the excellent bartender, Wilton. He made the best coladas in the Caribbean! We were always impressed with how good the housekeeping staff was as well. I have really nothing but good things to say about the friendliness of the staff. Just don’t expect the same kind of snap-to instant service attention that European and American destinations might have. The staff at LaLuna seemed to be hesitant at times, but much of it was due to them trying to be non-obtrusive and allow greater privacy.
The beach was definitely the main plus of LaLuna – it was very well kept, and the snorkeling was top-notch.
But, don’t go to Grenada! I want it to remain the quaint, friendly and unspoiled destination that it is. |

A beautiful property with great food. Visited: May 2002 |

Laluna is a beautiful, rustically elegant hotel. I highly recommend it at the off-season rate.
The food at Laluna is exceptional. It is so good that we signed up for the meal plan for the last three days of our stay. The meal plan is $55 per person, per day and includes an a la carte breakfast and dinner.
The standard fare is available for breakfast, and for dinner you have a wonderful array of dishes to choose from. You can order anything from the enormous fresh lobster (we saw the fresh catch coming in one day and our mouths watered), to pasta and things like filet mignon and chicken breast prepared with wonderful sauces. All the dishes are presented beautifully. It is no wonder that Conde Nast named the restaurant one of the Hot 100 Tables in the world in 2001.
We stayed in a cottage deluxe - the deluxe part means that you have your own cottage that is unattached to any other cottage. Definitely pay the extra few bucks for this option, so you can have the added privacy. All the cottages with the exception of #1 require a hike upstairs or steep ramp. The rooms have a great décor and soft clean bedding. Be aware that the bathroom is an open-air bathroom, but it does have a roof and wall. What is open air about it is that the walls have large cut-outs with slats or bamboo shades for privacy.
I can’t say that the service is poor. It is just slow, but no one was ever rude and our meals were never screwed up. Do you expect better when you’re paying $290 plus 18% tax per night plus meals? Yes, but I could live with it the way that it was.
You have to stake claim to your chairs early in the morning (by 9:30 a.m.) so you are not left without one. The pool itself is kind of small – it’s certainly not a swimming pool unless you’re in there by yourself. The beach, however, is perfet - calm, warm, clear…and generally free from beach vendors. |

I just spent a week at Laluna. The service was excellent. The Caribbean is not known for great service, but the service at Laluna was very good.
Be careful when you book your trip. We ended up with half of the resort taken up with a wedding party. They completely took over the place and we felt the manager owed it to the other guests to warn us (which didn't happen).
The property was very small, and the large wedding party was very distracting. There were only a few rooms with a good view. We were in cottage seven, which I think had the best view.
The food was excellent (breakfast needed a little work). The beach could use a few beach umbrellas, because there was no shade at all.
Overall, the resort was nice, but it was not in the same category as Guana Island. |

Just returned from a week at Laluna. I must say the pictures at www.laluna.com pretty much tell the story. Quaint, quiet, friendly, and idyllic are all adjectives that come to mind. The rooms are fairly large for the Caribbean and most (but not all) have fantastic views of the ocean from a very nice patio with a plunge pool. Hope you don't get stuck in one of the 25% of rooms with a mediocre (at best) view. They currently don't allow specific room requests which for us was where a myriad of small service problems began.
Because I had done my research, I requested a specific room and in December when I made my reservation was told that it would not be a problem. It was.
I must say that the staff at Laluna are exceedingly friendly. This almost makes up for the lack of training. From botched reservations to poor service in the restaurant, the service lapses are inexcusable for a resort of this price and quality.
Enough negative - I would certainly return and it is a thoroughly relaxing environment. In my search for the perfect, quiet Caribbean destination this ranks near the top. With improved service, it could be the best. |

Fantastic--rejuvenation for the soul! Visited: August 2001 |

I just returned from a spectacular visit to the island of Grenada, and my stay at Laluna hotel.
Everything exceeded my expectations--from the location on a secluded beach, to the intimate cottages scattered on the hillside (all with Indonesian furnishings and a serene view of the sea and sunsets from a private veranda and plunge pool).
As I love Italian cuisine, I feasted on pastas and other treats including seafood gnocchi (my favorite) to other fresh fish offered daily, prepared by their chef from Italy.
Alvin, the bartender, makes a great Pina Colada and Rum Punch, which I enjoyed on the Indonesian day bed situated in the open-air, thatched-roof lounge area.
All in all, I feel I rejuvenated my soul. It is a very tranquil place and the staff is very friendly and hospitable. I would not hesitate recommeding Laluna to anyone, and from the other guests comments that stayed here--you too will be glad you did.
You can tell there is much attention to details in the decor, and if it is good enough for Jerry Hall (who stayed here earlier this year) then it's good enough for me. |
