Grenadian by Rex Resorts, Grenada traveler review

See you next year Visited: August 2008
Posted by simonemills
Having 3 teenage boys that need total entertainment I sat on my sun lounger listening to the sound of nothing, perfect. My boys were off Kayaking, Sailing, Snorkeling and an afternoon game of Cricket. The equipment was in excellent condition and the rooms fantastic. They are being refurbed at the moment so ask for a good room. We had a Sea View room and what a view. Food excellent and the boys loved the ICE CREAM!!! Try the Nutmeg it is amazing. Facilities for very small children were brilliant and a very air conditioned t.v room was a godsend for that five minute cool down. This hotel is so varst that you do not feel like you are on top of eachother. Ken the Manager is an absolute diamoind and alway's ready to help.
If you want a beautiful holiday and need to relax but want the choice of excitement and sports this is for you *****

They had a lovely view with friendly staff. The security officer was very courteous at the back gate. Wash cloths were not always replaced, but that is the only complaint.

In addition, if you cannot climb steps, it can be cumbersome.

I highly recommend The Flamboyant.

We loved the accommodation, but had some negatives. Visited: July 2007
Posted by byfield
The accommodation was stunning, and most of the staff were very helpful.

However, we stayed at a time when some of the owners' friends were staying. Despite the age restriction for guests, they were able to bring younger children, which didn't ensure a quiet holiday for us. The owners' friends were, on the whole, okay. However, some were rude and acted as if they owned the place (maybe they were part owners?).

We stayed for two weeks, and had a bad experience with the owners' friends.
This soured the remainder of the holiday for us, and the owner never spoke to us after that (although he was friendly before the incident)!

Because of that, I would not encourage other people to stay because they could be unlucky.

Grenadian by Rex Resorts, Grenada traveler review

I was very disappointed. Visited: June 2008
Posted by trini
What I thought would have been a great weekend turned out to be very disappointing. The best looking part of the Grenadian by Rex Resort was the reception area. The rooms were okay in size, but the air-conditioning was not up to standard.

While some of the staff were very pleasant, there were a few who were not. The lady who fried the eggs for breakfast never smiled, and always looked as though she was upset to fry an egg for you. There wasn't much variety with the food, either.

What was quite noticeable was the fact that, some of the waiters were quite professional when it came to serving the Europeans, and the Caribbean people were left to wait or would have to call on one of them to serve you whatever you wanted.

On the last day of my stay, I requested a late checkout, so we paid the $40 that was standard procedure, and we were moved to another room 3109. When we used the toilet and flushed it, it overflowed. We called reception, and someone was sent to check it out.

This was what we had to deal with. The young lady asked, "How did the toliet overflow?" (all I did was flush it). We left the room to go to lunch. When we got back in about two hours' time, the ground was dry, and the toilet still had its contents in it (and there was no explanation on what we should do).

The air condition in that room was also a waste of time. What did I pay US $40. for?

Calabash Hotel, Grenada traveler review

Calabash is highly overrated. Visited: May 2008
Posted by yanks
My wife and I were looking forward to our vacation at the Calabash Hotel based upon the web site presentation. Well, that was short lived.

When we arrived, they didn't pick us up at the airport as planned. When we finally arrived at the hotel, we were in a state of shock because of how bad the property looked (nothing like the web site pictures). Also, there was dog feces in several places on the lawn area.

At the room, we were given instructions on spraying the room along with an electronic bug zapper (I think), and advised to spray before leaving for dinner so that the smell will be gone by the time you return.

The beach was not nice, and the view was of all boats anchored very close to shore.

To say the least, we checked out within the hour once we were able to get a room at another hotel (Spice Island Beach Resort). I wish I could rate this hotel "zero stars" - because that's what it deserves.

It was a very relaxing holiday. Visited: March 2008

We have just returned from our third stay at the Flamoyant.

The views across from the hotel along Grand Anse Beach to St. George's are terrific.

The staff was welcoming, cheerful and friendly. The housekeeping try and worked around when we were and were not in our room, and were really flexible.

The attached Dive School (Dive Grenada) was also really helpful, and worked hard to provide safe, yet entertaining diving.

We will be back.

The Flamboyant Hotel & Villas, Grenada traveler review

This is a true Grenada experience. Visited: February 2008

My partner and I recently stayed at the Flamboyant Hotel and would definitely return on our next stay.

That said, if you are looking for a luxurious five-star property with all the bells and whistles, you will likely be disappointed.

If, however, you are looking for an affordable, friendly, locally-owned and operated hotel with a fantastic view of Grand Anse beach and St. George's Bay, you'll enjoy the Flamboyant.

The major selling point of the hotel is its location on the southern end of Grand Anse. The rooms are not luxurious, but they are spacious, comfortable, clean, and all have views of the beach/bay with balconies.

The service at the hotel is excellent, particularly the hotel manager/owner Lawrence Lambert who will do anything to make your stay comfortable.

As the hotel is close to town and several good restaurants, we didn't opt for the meal plan. We ate breakfast and some lunches here, and the food was good. The service at the beach bar could be slow, but that's the Caribbean pace.

We had several good meals in St. George's, including, "The Beach House" (very good, also the most expensive meal we had there), "Coconut Beach" (you can walk there from the hotel on the beach) and "The Red Crab" (popular with the sailing crowd). We also ate at "The Nutmeg" in town which had a local flavour.

One of the best diving shops, "Dive Grenada" is right next to the hotel on the beach -- they were excellent.

Finally, I noticed that some reviews mentioned the fact that there are numerous steps down to the beach. This didn't particularly strike me when I was here. However, the hotel is on a hill, so if you're older, need a wheelchair, etc., it might be something to consider. It was not a major deal otherwise.

I stayed in the Flamboyant at the beginning of January. It is one of the best located hotels on the island.

It overlooked Grand Anse Beach, but was only a two-minute walk to the shore edge. I couldnt ask for more.

The staff was friendly, and the accommodations were clean and comfortable. What more could a person want?

I very highly recommend it. It is perfect for anyone who enyoys diving, relaxing on the beach, or chilling by the pool.

LaSource, Grenada traveler review

I thought it was rubbish.
Posted by ianwright
I expected this place to be great - it was not. They watered down the alcohol. They also tried to brag about their local beer called "caribeer" all the time. I think it was 0%. Not that I'm a big drinker or anything, but a real beer would have been appreciated.

They had a gym, but was always occupied by a local muscle man/attendant who made fun of you if you struggle with any weights. All the staff seemed to saunter around like they were really something.

They also had a shop that sold Mars Bars and Snickers at ten times the regular price.

The cleaners were grumpy to me if I was not out the room at 10:00 am. Then, they just didn't bother cleaning it.

I thought the treatments were lame. All the people applying them were grumpy and acted like they would rather be elsewhere.

The food was awful. It started off okay, then they started putting out left overs. I mean, how much plantain can one eat?

Also, the beach had hawkers that never gave us a break, trying to sell local spices.

I would avoid this place.

It was lovely.

It was lovely. I had a wonderful view of the sea and the port.

The staff was very cooperative.

I had lots of exercise as I had to walk up and down the hill to the supermarket - but even that was a lot of fun.

The price of the room was great, and it was worth it. Thanks again. You will be seeing me here in 2008!

I am very thankful for the friendly and timely accommodation provided by The Flamboyant Hotel.

My wedding guests and my wife and I switched hotels since our original hotel was so horrible. The Flamboyant was able to provide us all with wonderful rooms and excellent service for the last two nights of our trip (Christmas Eve and Christmas Day).

I would definitely stay here again, and I recommend The Flamboyant Hotel to any traveler who visits Grenada.

The location was very beautiful, and the rooms were always very tidy.

The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating, too.

The only draw back for some might be the hike up the stairs, but I got a better workout here than I do at the gym I pay a monthly fee at! So, to go on a great vacation and come back slimmer and a little more toned was excellent for me!

The Flamboyant was a great hotel at a nice price. It seemed less "plastic" than the bigger resorts, if you know what I mean.

I'll not be visiting the restaurant again!

The taxi sent from Calabash Hotel failed to pick us up from our hotel where we were staying. No explanation was given for the taxi not showing. As a result, everything was rushed.

The food was okay, but not spectacular. And the service? Well - I've had better at a Beefeater!

Why spend a lot more money on more expensive hotels with limited views when you can stay at this hotel? This hotel has a magnificent view of St George's Bay and Grand Anse Beach.

The accomodation is comfortable, clean, and meets all my requirements.

The service at the hotel is always first rate, and they will do everything to make your stay very welcoming.

I have now stayed at the hotel twice - once in December 2006 and now again in December 2007. On both occasions I have been treated with helpful, friendly and courteous staff.

I can highly recommend this hotel.

The Flamboyant Hotel & Villas, Grenada traveler review

The Flamboyant is far more than a view. Visited: November 2007

Grande Anse in Grenada is acknowledged as one of the finest stretches of beach in the western hemisphere. It also has the luxury accommodation to match.

At its southern extreme, however, the Flamboyant Hotel and Villas command a magnificent peninsula edge site with sweeping panoramic views across the bay and beyond to the capital St.Georges.

Anyone seeking comfortable three-star self catering this winter - alongside a full range of hotel services, including all inclusive packages - would be hard pressed indeed to better what this place has to offer.

The Flamboyant offers clean, simple air conditioned rooms; cable tv and wi-fi Internet; terraced gardens; restaurant and bars; and a freshwater pool and jacuzzi.

In addition, they have a gym and yoga retreat, while spacious suites and villas have fully equipped kitchens. The lounge bar is currently being relocated to a prime higher level outlook by the pool.

A multitude of steps from the beach up the hillside keeps everyone trim, though a personalized shuttle is available at no extra cost. Evening entertainment is provided, too.

With 68 rooms in all, and 90 full time staff, it's a big operation. However, it is long established and efficiently run by a hands-on manager, Lawrence Lambert, who, with a CBE for services to tourism, obviously knows his stuff.

Free watersports and adjacent Dive Centre are a bonus, but the view defines the Flamboyant and sets it apart. It's a wonderful start to anyone's day.

The Flamboyant Hotel & Villas, Grenada traveler review

Flamboyant Hotel, is the "Grande Dame" of Grande Anse! Visited: November 2007
Posted by trueblu
My eight-day stay at the Flamboyant Hotel went a long way to ensuring that my first ever trip to Grenada will not be my last! This property may not be the newest, or trendiest "kid on the block," but it met my needs perfectly.

I have my own "check-list" that probably differs from other travelers. Because I used to work in the hotel business, I am not "fooled" by superficial "glitter, gloss and size," or fancy names for things on restaurant menus.

Instead, I look for:
1. Welcoming, approachable, knowledgeable, helpful staff - no "headgames", please.

2. A comfortable mattress.

3. Cleanliness, cleanliness, cleanliness ... did I mention cleanliness?

4."Safe" location.

5. A kitchenette, if possible - since I like a bit of independence and a feeling of "being at home" in my room.

6. A location with a view; it doesn't have to be right on the beach, but "near enough" would be good!

The Flamboyant delivered on all counts, and at times, really exceeded my expectations.

If you are expecting a grand lobby and lots of "flashy" interior architecture, you will be disappointed. What you do get is a caring staff, active and involved managing director, who goes out of his way to ensure guest satisfaction, and that fabulous view, that I will keep stressing in this review!

Cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner was quite good. It was at least comparable to anywhere else I ate on island. But, the staff went above and beyond for me, when hearing about my food allergies. Their desire to focus on truly Caribbean/Grenadian food was impressive, and they offered to pretty much cook anything I wanted, provided I checked in with them the day before so that they could ensure they had the ingredients!

The pool was pretty standard, but well-maintained and well-utilized by a lot of families with young children. Of course, with a view like the one at the Flamboyant, and the excellent beach just steps away, extra embellishments would simply be a distraction!

Throughout my stay, I got the sense that the Flamboyant staff really worked hard as a team. Yet, they were so laid back, that it hardly seemed possible that their jobs always got done seemlessly.

This tells me they like their jobs and that morale is good. This is a testament to management. Somebody is doing something right over there!

We visited Grenada earlier this year, and bumped into the owner at a nearby restaurant. He set up a tour of the Villas for us, and we decided that we had to come back to Grenada and spend a few days. We were not disappointed.

The staff was superb, and every desire we mentioned was remembered and catered for.

A visit to the Maca Bana Villas is a must. They have beautiful gardens and breathtaking views. It is quiet, and there is a lovely breeze, day and night.

Heron's Flight, Grenada traveler review

I love Grenada! Visited: June 2007
Posted by speckrazy
I had never heard about Grenada until my college friends convinced me not to go to any widely advertised Caribbean islands.

We chose to stay at Heron's Flight Villa because it had the right price and all the amenities we needed to have a comfortable stay. We loved our vacation!

Grenada was such a beautiful island. There were lovely beaches, rain forests and lakes. The rum distilleries were also very interesting, and so much fun.

Also, the local people were so friendly and always so helpful with directions around the island or recommendations of where to go to see the beauty of their island, where to eat or just where to find nice bar for lazy hours.

Heron's Flight is a one of a kind of accommodation with very unusual architectural design, where outside living is a part of inside living and vice versa. It was nicely furnished, and very neat and clean. It provided us with all we needed to unwind after a strenuous college graduating year.

It had the most incredible vistas, nice private swimming pool, and lots of balconies and outside sitting areas. The villa was just the perfect accommodation for all of us.

It was not far from the most picturesque Saint Georges (a 15-minute drive). We were close to all entertaiment and dining places, yet far enough to enjoy a tranquility and privacy.

We loved the garden with all the flowers and the trees full of mangoes, limes, papayas and oranges. There was a small beach below the garden that was almost always exclusively for us.

We will be returning to lovely Grenada. There was so much here to explore!

I loved the location. It was secluded, but not too far from the town centre (15mins). Also, the airport was just five minutes away. I only heard a plane once, and that was out at the poolside with someone drawning it to my attention.

As for the beach - wow! In addition, the staff was helpful and friendly, and the resort was very clean.

This was an excellent value. I will be going back in October.

Green Roof Inn, Grenada traveler review

This was a bit of natural heaven. Visited: March 2006
Posted by boutique
We stayed at the Green Roof Inn for just one night. We stayed at the Rex Grenadian for most of the holiday, so it was a wonderful escape to a rural, traditional setting with goats and chickens.

I loved it here, as it felt like a real Caribbean hideaway. I loved this island. It is magical. Paradise Beach was so beautiful, and it was just the two of us there that day.

The Green Roof was in a beautiful setting. The rooms were basic with an old fashioned roof fan and mosquito net. But this only added to its charm. The shutters opened onto a beautiful garden. The sound of goats, dogs and roosters at night was great.

My only negative was the breakfast very basic - just toast and cereal. The restaurant was not open that night, so we could not comment on that.

We ate at a sweet restaurant called Callaloo by the Sea - which was great. If you like walking, then it is awesome for the views and the flowers are beautiful.

I could have stayed here all fortnight - even though there were just a few restaurants. One evening, we asked a restaurant if they were open. The girl replied "Yes, but we have no food." Brilliant!
