4.0 stars It was a beautiful hotel, but there were some negatives. Visited: September 2008
Posted by gapa
The hotel was beautiful, and the staff was very professional and helpful. However, the beds were not comfortable at all - even after several attempts to improve it.

Also, there were very little (or not at all) pool/beach/indoor game activities or entertainment. These areas need improvement.

1.0 stars I was disgusted. Visited: June 2008

Many of the staff members here had such poor attitudes and were extremely complacent about serving us. Not only was the service bad, the food was mediocre at best - and the prices were outrageous.

On top of all of this, we came back to erroneous charges of several hundred dollars on our credit card.

So, if you decide to take a chance and stay at the Ritz, I'd suggest cash transactions only. That's a suggestion.

This hotel was great!

The staff was so acommodating, and the service was outstanding.

Also, the food, the rooms, the spa, and the facilities were all top-notch.

I would definitely go back.

3.0 stars It was beautiful, but there were some food issues. Visited: March 2005
Posted by jbrigantino
The resort was quite beautiful, and extremely peaceful. There were many couples with young children. The beach was small, but very adequate, since there were not too many visitors.

The only problem was the lack of food variety. There seemed to be only one restaurant, located near the pool area. There simply was not a decent variety of foods...perhaps ten in total, one stranger than the next. A hamburger, via room service, with tip/service charge, was $25. Tuna on whole wheat...$20. I truly felt trapped...unable to eat simple foods of variety. Because of this, I don't think I will return.

1.0 stars Do not get married here! Visited: May 2004
Posted by cmpende
My husband and I wanted to have a destination wedding. Upon graduating from our respective universities, we researched several resorts on the island and it came down to two: the Ritz Carlton and Half Moon.

We selected the Ritz because we thought that the name along was synonomous with quality. So we saved our money (which for me was our entire savings) to have our union sealed at this resort (mistake #1).

Upon arrival, our luggage was lost, which contained the groom's attire. We contacted the airline, and they assured us that they would place a tracker on our luggage. Meanwhile, we notified our wedding/hotel concierge, Marsha Cogle, who assured us that she would be on top of things.

My husband had absolutely nothing-not even an extra pair of underwear-and the staff could not tell us of a place where we could immediately get toiletries and/or clothes.

When our bags were located, we were told by Hopeton (Ritz hotel staff) to call to see if my husband's bags would arrive on time. Because it was an 800 number, we were billed $130. We explained to the staff that Hopeton told us to call the airline. They gave us the runaround.

Our meal plan was messed up. We paid for the keys to paradise all-inclusive, but the Ritz Carlton had us down for the All American Meal Plan (which covers only breakfast and dinner). So on our first day, we were charged $50+ because of this. When we asked the Ritz Carlton staff to correct this, they said that they would since they "were all empowered", but never did. We had to simply stick to our regimen of eating a hefty breakfast to last us untll dinner.

Finally, the thick smell of marijuana coming from other people's rooms smelled so badly, that I was seriously nauseating! I complained, but nothing happened.

This is just a brief summary-more stuff happened, but there was a space limit as to how much I could type.

1.0 stars THE STAFF ARE COMPOSED OF HUSTLERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Visited: May 2004
Posted by carmencita125
People, please don't stay here! Everywhere we turned, it seemed as if we were being conned or hustled by the hotel staff! Waiters and waitresses would constantly say that a menu item was one price, but the menu would list a different price. If the menu says that a martini is $10, why not reprint a new menu if the new price is $15?!?!?!
We had the keys to paradise, but the cleaning ladies wanted a tip, the guys that bring out the beach chairs wanted a tip, waiters and waitresses, etc...
Also, this resort is FAR from the nightlife!!! It will cost you $25 per person to go into Montego Bay one way! Now, I know that Jamaica is a developing country, so how in the world could the locals afford this ?!?!? Obviously they have some other source of transportation. But, the Ritz Carlton will only allow their taxi services to and from the resort! SO YOU HAVE TO PAY THEIR PRICE!!!!!!!!

5.0 stars This was the best resort I have ever stayed in! Visited: April 2004

The Ritz-Carlton was absolutely wonderful! The grounds were beautiful, and so were the rooms. The staff was quite friendly and accommodating. The food was absolutely wonderful, too. Staff members Hopeton and Winston were courteous and helpful.

The White Witch restaurant was definitely a must do. The food was great and the views were amazing. Again, the staff was pleasant and courteous.

The hotel also provided free shuttles to better beaches and nightlife. We went to Margaritaville, which was the hot spot in the area. The Half Moon shopping center was quite corny and very deserted when we went, though.

All in all, I would definitely go again. I loved it!

2.0 stars The Ritz-Carlton offered great service, but a poor beach. Visited: March 2004
Posted by tuffyz
My husband, my sister and I decided to stay here last year. Most of our time spent on the island was with my husband's family who lives here, fortunately. So, we decided to finish our trip in luxury.

We went with the all-inclusive plan (a great idea since my sister ate so much!) We wanted to stay at a place to cater to every need while avoiding the young college spring breakers. I was extremely impressed with the staff. They were very courteous, prompt, and I was just overall impressed.

The facilities were very nice- almost too nice given that it was Jamaica. We really enjoyed being served by the pool. However, when I go to the Caribbean, I want a great beach. If anyone is like me, then do not come here. The sand was too rough to walk on, and the beach was very, very small. Your only hope is to lay around the pool, but who wants to do that when you're right next to the ocean?

I do recommend their spa, however. The marital bath was amazing. Some other of my family members stayed here and they said their golf course made up for the lack of beach.

5.0 stars We had a wonderful time! Visited: February 2004

I truly loved the Ritz-Carlton Rose Hall. My husband and I visited the resort on a business trip. For my birthday, we decided to return to the resort with 12 of our friends. We truly enjoyed every aspect of our vacation.

The golf course was amazing. Our dinner at the White Witch restaurant was fabulous, as was the view. If you go, book your dinner reservation at the White Witch at sunset. It was a remarkable view!

In addition, the service was wonderful. Any issues that came up were dealt with immediately - and with a smile. We are going to return soon, this time with our children.

5.0 stars We received outstanding service here. Visited: January 2004

The staff at the Ritz consisted of true ladies and gentlemen. They provided incredible service and made me feel as if I never wanted to leave.

The food was great, our favorite being at the White Witch. Jasmine's was a delightful culinary experience.

We stayed at the Ritz in Maui, and we thought the service in Jamaica blew the Maui Ritz away! The Maui Ritz may have had three pools and a larger beach, but the people of Jamaica made it far superior. In addition, the all-inclusive was the way to go, as prices were crazy!

We have made two trips to the Ritz Jamaica and hope to return in Jan 2006!

5.0 stars Ritz-Carlton is top notch. Visited: July 2003

We absolutely loved the Ritz-Carlton. We were on the Key to Paradise package. This included all meals, drinks and even room service. Yes, the beach was rocky, but if you bring beach shoes there was no problem. The staff was all extremely courteous, and efficient. We really felt that we got a great vacation for the money and would return in a moment.

The Ritz Carlton was fantastic. They boasted marble double vanities, a separate shower, down pillows and comforter, beautiful grounds, and great service.

Make reservations for The White Witch restaurant ASAP and make sure to get early reservations before the sun goes down, or you will miss the golf course views and the ocean beyond.

This was easily the most luxurious resort/hotel that I have ever been to, and would suggest it to anyone going to Jamaica. I have to reach to find something bad about it, and they were: tiny beach, not for the active traveler (no night life), and the staff was great, but a little stiff for my taste.

Overall, we loved the Ritz, and would choose it for a slow, relaxing vacation to Jamaica.

4.0 stars The Ritz-Carlton Rose Hall offered a good value. Visited: May 2003
Posted by boylemea
This property was an extremely good value! It was the only Ritz property that offered an all-inclusive plan.

The food was above average and worth the meal plan. We stayed in a 900 square-foot ocean suite. It was very nice and the service was terrific. The property attracted large wedding parties and conferences.

Because the property was such a great value, it might not attract your typical Ritz client. The golf was very nice. We did go out to dinner in Montego Bay and the food was above average. And you could not beat the meal plan the Ritz offered! Also, the pool was simple - nothing exceptional.

Overall, the property was a great value. It would be a good property to take a large family for a family reunion under the meal plan. For a romantic getaway, I would suggest other more upscale properties in the Ritz chain.

5.0 stars The best vaction resort in Jamaica with the best rooms and service. Visited: May 2003
Posted by lpalmer
My husband and I went in May and could not have been happier with the Ritz. We have stayed in Jamaica before and found the Ritz to be the cleanest, friendliest, and most enjoyable resort on the island.

Our room was very clean and large, and the maid service was wonderful. They came to our room three times a day to refresh the towels, make up the room and turn down our bed. The staff was the friendliest group we have ever met and we were often asked how we were and what they could do for us.

The shopping at nearby Half Moon was the only way to go, and they provided a free shuttle to and back every 15 minutes, making it very accessible. The beach was small, but the pool was nice and they shuttled guests to nicer beaches for free.

The food was wonderful, top-notch all the way. However, if you are a vegetarian, you do not have much selection.

The grounds were immaculate and quite large. We enjoyed walking around in the evening and always had the walking areas to ourselves. It was not crowded at all during the time we were here.

We plan to go again at the same time next year, and will be taking family with us so they can also enjoy this wonderful resort. I highly recommend this place for those who enjoy service and quality. Athough, if you have children there is not much for them to do here. We will not stay anywhere else in Jamiaca.

1.0 stars Disappointed! Visited: March 2003
Posted by sandysheridan
This was my second trip to Ritz-Carlton Rose Hall in Jamaica in the past twelve months. I felt that it was important to express my displeasure regarding the customer service I received during my last stay here. Prior to my visit I would have put Ritz service on par with Four Seasons and Disney, all having exceptional customer service. At this point I would put it on par with a low-end chain hotel.

I booked the trip, and paid to bring my sister in-law and my brother along as a surprise for my wife. I booked an oceanview suite through Air Jamaica Vacations for six nights (March 20-26, 2003). However upon arrival we were informed that they did not have the suite, and the best they could do was a gardenview room. I spent the remainder of my vacation being given the runaround about who was at fault, who was going to deal with the problem, and how it was going to be dealt with. In the end it took until 2 hours before I left for the airport for my return flight to get even moderate satisfaction. Furthermore the wait staff leaves plenty to be desired. If you are considering this location lower your service expectations level to that of an economy hotel!

3.0 stars Good value, but I'm not going back. Visited: February 2003

I spent a week here last February. I enjoyed myself and felt that it was a decent value, but I don't think that I would ever go back. There were too many things that were inconsistent.

The room was gorgeous, spacious, and had a very nice balcony where we could enjoy breakfast. The beach was okay, except that it wasn't kept clean. (There was seaweed all over it, trash in piles on the sand, etc.) There really weren't enough beach chairs at the beach or the pool for the number of guests staying on property.

We were on the "Keys to Paradise Plan," which included all of our food and drinks. We definitely ate our money's worth and then some. We kept track of how much we would have spent on food and drinks and it came to almost the cost of our entire trip!

The service was excellent sometimes and poor other times. We noticed that the male employees went out of their way to be friendly and helpful, while the women seemed to think we were in their way. If that has something to do with the Jamaican culture, it turned us off. Did I have a good time? Yes. Did I think it was a good value? Yes. Would I ever go back? No.

3.0 stars Disappointing Visited: February 2003

Not a particularly relaxing vacation.

Visitors were primarily business groups and families with children. The pool was crowded with children -- trying to relax on the beach we'd hear crying children and shouting pre-teens.

Service was slow and not particularly helpful with the exception of Jasmine's restaurant which was exceptional.

Rooms were nice (beds exceptionally comfortable) but we could hear our neighbors to the sides as well as those in the room above ours.

The most positive experiences were with Jasmine's restaurant and the Spa (fantastic massage!)

5.0 stars Paradise doesn't describe it enough! Visited: January 2003

My husband and I travel quite frequently to Hawaii and other islands on business incentive trips and for pleasure, and we stay in five star resorts.

This resort offers it all - friendly staff (there is always someone present smiling or asking if they can assist you), beautiful spacious and clean rooms, beautiful grounds, and great food.

The beach is nice, but not as nice as others we have stayed on. It is quiet (not like the other beaches where you have a lot of hotels sharing the beach), and very relaxing.

The food is good (breakfast is average, lunch is very good, but the dinners are exceptional). We purchased the meal plan and I would highly recommend it. The finer restaurant is quite expensive, but well worth it. I'm not sure we would have gone twice if it was not included (and you will want to visit again once you taste this incredible Jamaican food). Definitely go up to White Witch on a clear day and have lunch, the view is magnificent!

The hotel runs a shuttle to the Half Moon Shopping village (just a two-minute drive) and the jewelry stores are incredible with very good prices.

We loved our Jamaican experience and will definitely go back and wouldn't consider staying anywhere but the Ritz.

4.0 stars This is a great resort - except for the beach! Visited: December 2002
Posted by janeen_donati
My wife and I never stayed at a Ritz Carlton before, but after seeing what a great price they were giving, we decided to give it a try (even though we were reluctant to go to Jamaica).

The hotel building itself was a basic U-shape. It was nothing exciting or "tropical". I know it's a Ritz, but look at what the Four Seasons did in Nevis!

The food was excellent - especially at White Witch. The service was very slow, but that is just the way it is on any island. There was no entertainment at night as far as I could see. There were just a couple of bars with a band that played one time in the seven days that we stayed. We went to Montego Bay for one night and came back as fast as we went.

As far as the beach, rocky is not the word! The sand from the top of the beach where the chairs were was fine. But once you got near the water and as far as you could walk, there was nothing but rocks. I could only find a sliver of sand that was not rocky, but you still need to wear beach shoes. It was not what I would call a good beach in the Caribbean.

The other beach where you could take a shuttle was not rocky, but rather desolate and the atmosphere was somewhat lacking.

In conclusion, the hotel was very nice, clean and well kept. It was a fairly new hotel. The beach was a disappointment. There was not much entertainment at night, and the food was pretty good.

You'll have to decide for yourselves what is more important!

3.0 stars Over rated, poor attention to detail. Visited: December 2002

I stayed here with my family over the Christmas vacation. They constantly ran out of towels at the pool. Service was extremely slow and unresponsive. We had a lot of minor problems, which should not be the case at a five-star hotel.

After hearing from a friend that his bill was completely messed up, I asked for our bill the day prior to checkout. Upon discovering many wrong charges, I was told that they would pull the charge slips and correct the bill. Upon checking out the next morning the charges were still there, with no record of my discussion. They then took the charges off only to re-charge my American Express card when I left.

The kids' club was a total joke. It was completely unorganized and basically babysitting with videos for 5-8 year olds.

Dinners were a total joke. They insisted we make reservations prior to our stay or we would not get seating. Not only was this false, but the dinners were mostly buffets at outrageous prices, which started at 7PM (a poor time with young children). After writing two letters to the general manager I finally got a weak apology. Not only won't I go back to Jamaica, I certainly will attempt to avoid staying at any Ritz-Carlton properties in the future.
