This was a very clean hotel, with good food! Visited: April 2007 |

We stayed here for a week. The hotel was clean, with fresh towels provided every day. The food at the hotel was excellent, and staff was very friendly.
The hotel was being refurbished, and it really will benefit from that. We were on a budget, but booked the room with an ocean view. It became very busy and loud at night - especially on Saturday night when it appeared all the locals descended on the public beach.
This was not a family-friendly of hotel. One night, two women (I assumed were prostitutes) invited themselves to have dinner with a lone guest! They didn't bother us, but it did not reflect well on the hotel. Also, watch out for the dodgy hustlers on the public beach stretch, they can be a nightmare.
The hotel gave us wrist bands for free entrance to the public beach. This was a waste of time! We got rid of ours, as this seemed to attract the dodgy characters! Anyway, only the locals used the public beach and we really didn't get any peace there if we went.
I suggest you pay the fee, and go to the private beach down the road. Jamaica is beautiful, but the goverment needs to educate the locals about their attitudes towards tourists if they want tourists to come back.
I would say have your wits about you and enjoy the wonderful sights. The strip was okay, but a little too commercial for me.
Please, please, please stop playing so much Bob Marley! It was overkill - especially when Jamaica has so many other reggae artists like Gregory Issacs, Beres H, Dennis B, G. Silk! Come on! Educate tourists about your beautiful music -not just Bob Marley, bless him!
We will be back, though! |

From its Shady and unfriendly staff, to the shower heads that dribble down cold water. This MOTEL has everything for the traveler who wants to "rough it" and experience Jamaica as it should be. This MOTEL sits across from a public beach, which the locals have affectionately named “Le Public Toilet.” This is the perfect back drop for all the friendly hobo’s, prostitute and dealers you’ll be encountering on your way to the “Hip Strip.” (Yes bring the whole family!!!) The entire MOTEL has a certain fragrance of baby diarrhea and rancid beer. There's mold and other weird stuff growing on the bathroom fixtures. While this might not be suitable for everyone, this was perfect for me (as you see, I’m a retard). You could spend a little more and stay at an all inclusive resort (or even go to Hawaii), but where’s the fun in that. Bored? The staff (all 6 of them) clocks out exactly at 1am every night, leaving the MOTEL vulnerable for any street urchins or dealers to knock on your door. Feeling adventurous? Gold Fingers Gentlemen’s Club, which is right next door, is known for it’s over weight and hairy women. Once you see these overweight freak shows you’ll know exactly why you left the states. Hungry? There are a hand full of restaurants close by to the Wexford. The Wexford Grill (located in the lobby) is famous for it’s Chicken with Jerk Sauce (it tastes like it sounds) Yum Yum. Burger King (which is just a minute walk away) is famous for a dish the locals call “a whopper.” (Very exotic) So when visiting Jamaica be sure to book in advance for this magnificent MOTEL. Feel free to email me with your inquiries |

We were first time visitors on a budget. We got a 1930s movie star's hotel on a gorgeous view facing west. My wife loved the hotel and the big room with the balcony.
We got the impression that the people here seemed desperate for food and money, but they seemed kind in heart. You must understand their culture. Our cab driver was a cousin of the owners of Calypso Tours and took us to his home to visit with his wife and grade school daughters. They were very clean, polite, and congenial. We wish we could have tipped them better. As a result, we are going to send them two bicycles.
The island was gorgeous and - in spite of poverty - it smelled clean. There was little industry except tourism and Boxite for aluminum.
The food was a little higher than in the USA, but they had a Burger King next door. Jimmy Buffet owns the Margaritaville overlooking the ocean a half a block to the north and lunch for two was $28 USD.
The waterslide was nice, and the view with sailboats visiting was breathtaking. The hotel employees gave us the impression that they didn't like us, as coffee in the morning was a struggle every day (except when ordered from the bedroom telephone and a two dollar tip was expected or it would be slow next time).
The maids were extremely courteous and helpful, and even did our laundry for a $5 tip. A $50 damage deposit was required which was reversed on our Visa card when leaving.
The days were in the upper 80s with high humidity, and nights were high 70s - perfect weather. Water for swimming at the park beach was almost warm and I would guess about 75 degrees. There were no pelicans or seagulls. Jamaicans said the hurricane blew them all away. Don't know what to believe.
The bay was shallow, so we saw very few fish. The big ones were in deep water which was a long way out. The water was light blue with a white sand bottom. There were no building codes, so rich homes stood amoungst tin roof shacks.
Water was good for drinking. Jerk hot chicken and pork are traditional dishes, but it seemed the locals ate less meat than Americans (or maybe they cannot afford much meat in their diet). I was surprised at how healthy the living standards were for such poverty. I guess with no industry, there is little pollution.
We were here eight days. The Jamaican coffee Blue Mountain) was second to none. Streets were narrow, and with driving on the opposite side of the streets (and me driving for over 50 years driving without an accident), I would not recomend renting a car. They were excellent drivers, but drove like race car drivers. Police didn't seem to be doing their job all over the island.
It rained a type of mist every night but it didn't seem to bother anyone. Ocho Rios seemed for the rich and seemed more like Cancun, Mexico. |
