The white sand beaches of Jamaica are among the most famous in the world, and for that reason they are lined with expensive all-inclusive resorts. Less well known is the beauty of the Blue Mountains, and that is where a true gem of a peaceful hideaway known as the Maya Lodge awaits the traveller seeking a more authentic, natural Jamaican experience.

Although it is located just a short drive outside of Kingston, it seems a world away from the hot, bustling capital. The steep ascent up the Blue Mountains takes one to a cooler climate amid lush tropical vegetation.

There, owner Peter Benchley located his lodge and began SENSE Adventures, which provides a variety of tours to all parts of the island and can help with lodging at small inns that are members of the Jamaican Alternative Tourism Association (JATA).

The Maya Lodge features a range of accommodations from camping, hotel style arrangements, private rooms in lodges and cabins as well as geodesic huts scattered artfully across the hillside.

Delicious dinners are served family-style each evening on a thatched-roof verandah. The menu options at Maya Lodge, while not extensive, do include vegetarian options.

The Lodge is an excellent base for exploring the small villages in the famous Blue Mountain coffee region, or for making excursions into Kingston. While many excellent tours are offered (from climbing Blue Mountain, to whitewater rafting or enjoying reggae music in Kingston), personal guides can be hired if you prefer to design your own itinerary.
