5.0 stars It was excellent! I can't wait to go back. Visited: September 2006

My very first vacation outside of the US was to Jamaica. My husband and I stayed at the Jack Tar Village in Montego Bay, and we loved it! It also was my first time flying, I was very nervous. But when we arrived at Jack Tar, the friendly staff made everything better.

The food was fabulous, entertainment was out of this world, and the room was very spacious. Most of all, it was affordable.

I was terribly sad to hear that they would be closing their doors. I was really looking forward to vacationing there in May 2007. Hopefully, they are just changing their name.

My wife and I visited Jamaica. We had a great time. The people were very friendly and helpful. We stayed at Jack Tar Village.

Drinks and food caould be ordered right on the beach. Our room was large and decorated nicely. We had a California king sized bed. We had a lanai that overlooked the ocean, pool and the outdoor festivities. Pool overlooked the beach.

We enjoyed the activities. There was snorkeling, boating tours, etc. Because this trip was all-inclusive, we didn't have to worry about food. Food was almost available around the clock - uill 3-4:00 am.

4.0 stars It was wonderful. Visited: March 2005

My husband and I went to Jamaica three times, and all three times we stayed at Jack Tar Village.

The food was great. The staff was great. The hospitality was wonderful. We fell in love with Jack Tar Village. It was very affordable.

Also, the housekeeping was excellent. We left all of our belongings in the rooms, and not so much as a hair was touched.

I am heart broken that this hotel is closing. I logged on just now to make reservations and my heart fell in my shoes.

Shame on the people who thought this place was grubby, you're on holiday for goodness sake!

This place was amazing. I made a lot of friends at the hotel - including the staff. Everyone was fantastic.

If you get the chance, visit Dunn's River Falls and the Bob Marley Museum. Or, even go out of your hotel and speak to some of the local people.

I think it is a shame the hotel is closing, because I thought this was the best time of my life.

2.0 stars I would think twice before staying here. Visited: February 2004

When you travel 5,000 miles to Jamaica on a 10-hour flight, you would probably expect a little more than you get at Montego Beach Resort (formerly known as Jack Tar Village).

The staff was fantastic, friendly and made my stay more bearable than the hotel did. There was no lift/elevators which could be a problem for the disabled or elderly, no pool table/table tennis (or any other real physical activities), and the jacuzzi had scum all around the sides which was very unpleasant.

This resort was definitely not for young children. The hotel itself was very basic, and definitely not the place to go if it's your first time in Jamaica, as leaving the complex was quite a troublesome experience. The locals stood outside the gates waiting to harass tourists to buy things they didn't want.

On my two-week vacation, I only left the gates/complex twice! Which was disappointing for me as I didn't see anything of Jamaica but the downsides!

The food was also basic, it was the same for breakfast, lunch and tea with the exception of one or two dishes. Every glass was chipped and the cutlery was limited, I lost seven Ibs in the first week as the vegetarian options were rice, vegetables and salad. However, with the help of Lloyd James (the restaurant manager who made sure I had something to eat every day), I survived the second week.

The entertainment was ridiculous. I went to bed before 10:30 every night just to escape it. I would think twice before staying here!

I was very disappointed with this so-called resort. The rooms were not as well kept as they could have been. There is no real beach behind the hotel. The staff does do a good job of entertaining the guests, but that's about it. As a whole, I was very disappointed with this trip. I have been to different islands, as well as different countries, and this was the worst!

My husband and I usually stay at Holiday Inn but we decided to try some place new, as Holiday Inn is not what it used to be.

Upon arrival we were greeted with smiles and rum punch. The staff was great and very attentive. The food left much to be desired and the Chinese restaurant was closed. The beach was not really a beach to speak of, just a small area. If 20 people were on the beach it would be very crowded. Although it had beautiful white sand and crystal clear water.

The hotel itself, while small, was clean and well kept. I must mention again that the food was nothing special and the snacks were limited. If you are looking for something on the economical side and don’t mind average food and drinks then this is the place for you. We, however, will not be repeating guests.

It is breathtaking. That is what every vacation at Jack Tar is.

It is both relaxing and fun. The staff and the visitors are great. It is a nice place to be free and feel free. Special thanks to Marlon for teaching me that.

Thank you, Jack Tar, for all the special times. I will see you soon!

2.0 stars The worst hotel ever! Visited: July 2002
Posted by claudfil
We went to Jack Tar thinking it would be a luxury resort with beautiful grounds and a youthful population. But, after our disastrous flight on Air Jamaica, we were even more disappointed when we pulled up to Jack Tar Village.

The hotel itself is very nice except for the fact that we were on the top floor (fourth floor) and there was no elevator. And as you might have guessed, the Chinese restaurant wasn?t open when we went either, so we had to suffer through the buffet dinners, lunches, and brunches with food that had obviously sat out for hours.

Our rooms were spacious with a view of the bay, but we also had to contend with our rooms never being cleaned on time, and a huge roach in our bathroom.

As for the entertainment, the staff did its best to be entertaining but unfortunately their efforts were for naught because there were only about 15 people in the entire hotel.

The beach was no beach rather a strip of sand 5' by 5' where we were constantly harassed about going on the glass-bottomed boat. We could swim in the bay but had to be aware of the sea urchins. They were also too pushy about people participating in the shows.

If we did not like rice, potatoes, cheese or lettuce then we wouldn?t have been able to eat. There was no Red Stripe Light beer all week and the inside bar made the weakest drinks ever. Although, we must give credit to Gladstone at the pool bar because without him and his drinks the whole week would have been a bust.

Much love to Koro, Murph, O'Neil, Garfield, Garth, and the guy who brought us the French fries at 2am and ripped us off for the six pack of Redstripe.

Come to Jamaica and feel alright? I don?t think so. Bob Marley was wrong!

My girlfriends and I were here for one week and had an absolutely wonderful time. Garfield, the MC for the show at night, was very good. Oniel was good to look at, and very helpful. Gladstone was a very good bartender.

The food was great, and the view from our room was awesome. The place was very clean. We are planning our return visit for next year.

We had a nice time at the resort.

We wish we could have done more activities, but I had a little accident while getting out of the hot tub and hurt my knee. Therefore, we could not do any activities for the rest of our trip. I was really looking forward to snorkeling, scuba, and checking out the whole resort, but was unable to.

Maybe sometime in the future we can come back. The one thing I liked the most was the ocean, and the one-legged little black bird that hung around the dining area.

My sisters and I went to Jack Tar for a week in June. We had the best time of our lives. Everything was wonderful from the airline (US Airways) to the housekeeping.

When we first registered the clerk was expecting us and knew us by name.
The rooms were big and clean with a beautiful view of the ocean.

The nightly entermaintment was our favorite. The S.E.A. crew and Root Vibrations made us feel special. A special thank you goes to Tabia, Oneil, Marlon, Kayon, Murphy, Ricky, Wayne, Douglas, Latoya, Koro, and most of all Garfield. They made each performance seem like it was especially for us.

The staff was excellent and the food was great. The pool bar was so much more than what we were expecting. We even had Oneil to rub sun block on us. (Thanks Oneil)

We will be back next year.

We stayed for four nights and five days. Here is an honest review.

The appearance of the resort is relatively clean, nothing special, and it is very close to the airport. The area it is on is the "hip strip", which is about a ten-minute walk from the MarguaritavilleBar and the Casino (both are good bars). It is safe to walk the streets, but beware because the natives are waiting to pounce the second you step outside and if you don't respond, some of them get unneccessarily nasty. Everyone is a cab driver and can be haggled with on the price (usually $5 for a ride to the bars).

Only one restaurant was open. The food was good, with a big variety. There are a lot of mosquitos out after 7:00 p.m. or so, wear some spray. The only beer is Red-Stripe (and light also) and it is served in a little glass (so buy a big mug and use that for your stay). There is a great selection of frozen drinks and concoctions. The swim-up bar by the pool is nice, with friendly bartenders, but it closes too early. The "inside" bar is okay, there are slot machines next to it and table at which to sit.

Each room has a balcony with two chairs, cable, AC, king-sized bed. There are a lot of red ants though. And don't leave your screened door open in the evening, or the mosquitoes will fly in.

There is a very small beach, and there is only one beach - not two as they advertise. There are two pools, but only one is really used. It has a volleyball net and a swim-up bar. Snorkeling is good, and watersports are fun. Wave runners are $55 for a half hour, so we didn't bother.

The shows are fun. They start at 9:30 p.m., and after they end at 11:00 p.m. or so, there is no one really around. The staff is known as the SEA crew, and we really didn't find them anything special friendliness-wise, none of them really went out of their way other than a few nice bartenders.

Overall, it is a good resort. It's no Sandals or Beaches, but for the money, it's worth it. This was my second time to Jamaica, and I am not sure if we would go back again. It has nothing to do with Jack Tar, just the harrasment outside from the natives kind of wears on you and there are some much friendlier islands without the hassle.

This was our first time to Jack Tar Village, and it won't be our last! They made our vacation a memorable and very enjoyable one.

Thanks to everyone from the front desk and the S.E.A. crew to the bartenders, housekeeping and waiters - just everyone for all the smiles you gave us. God bless.

Staying at the Jack Tar Village was absolutely wonderful!

The food was great, and the rooms were great! Most of all the entertainment was also great! Koro was so funny, and Marlin was a superior dancer (along with all the others).

I cannot wait to come back for another visit. It was truly my home away from home.
