5.0 stars We love Jamaica! Visited: May 2002

It was very hard when we were trying to decide which resort to stay at in Jamaica. We ended up being very happy with our stay at Couples Negril.

The food and service was excellent. The drink service was kind of slow, but just because the Jamaican people were so laid back and relaxed. We were on vacation, so we were in no hurry.

The only thing that needed to be improved was the stage area in the Cassava Terrace. It was hard to see the entertainment at times. We did talk to the new head of entertainment, who assured us that he was brought in to make changes such as that.

We enjoyed our stay and had no problems with the service. If you are looking for a party resort, we do not recommend Couples Negril,. This resort is more for those who are looking for peaceful relaxation.

5.0 stars A beautiful country, friendly people, and a great resort. Visited: April 2002

My husband and I stayed at Couples for a week in April and we just loved it.

We enjoyed great food, great buffets, a great pool and bar area, and a great beach. The hotel provided great excursions ($$) and day trips for free with transportation. Get your hair braided on the beach for less and for a better job. (Pay only $30 for your whole head by Valery at end of beach.)

The rooms were all the same. Unless you want a hammock on the balcony, don't upgrade. We preferred the hammocks on the beach, they were more romantic.

Enjoy Jamaica! We did, and we will return after we see the rest of the world.

Having never been to an all-inclusive resort before, but loving the concept of paying one price and enjoying everything without needing to pull out your wallet again, Couples Negril was fabulous!

We have traveled fairly extensively through the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Europe and the southern U.S., and this ranks up as one of our very best vacation experiences. The activities are endless; water-skiing, sailing, tennis, golf, kayaking, water aerobics, catamaran cruise, snorkeling, scuba, etc--the water and beach are exceptional!

The food and nighlty entertainment is great and the staff could be more accomodating or friendly. There also is literally every age group vacationing here from early twenties to late seventies and everyone seems to thorougly enjoy themselves.

We went with another married couple and it became a contest of who could eat, drink and participate in more activites every day. So much is offered, it's your own fault if you are bored.

We are planning a Couple Negril "Reunion Tour" next year because we had so much fun!

Our only suggestions would be to take the flight from Montego Bay to Negril. It is definitely worth the money and avoids the long and nauseating ride. Also, don't pay for an ocean room. The garden rooms are perfect and more than close enough. Be sure to eat at the fine dining restaurant more than once during your stay, as it is fabulous. And lastly, don't miss the resort's catamaran cruise.....it is a ball!

I have read some bad reviews of the place and I am dumbfounded! My husband and I have gone to Couples Negril twice with a couple of resorts in between and find it world class in beach quality, delicious food, and service!

The rooms are always clean with a balcony or patio in every one. Our room (Deluxe Gardenview) had a gorgeous view of the beach/ocean with a forefront of lovely garden with the wedding gazebo. The wait staff was friendly and happy--always smiling and singing. Even the people who made up the room asked if we were having a good time.

The food was simply out of this world! Each restaurant had its own unique atmosphere, but delicious food. Loved the Otaheite! Bar service was quick and impeccable. We were there to ring in New Year in 2002 and I cannot even describe the spread--incredible!

Couples is a well kept secret that I hate to give away, but it is a wonderful place! We are making plans to go back in March or June!

I am stymied by the spoilsports who have given Couples Negril bad reviews. What more do you people want!?! From the moment we got to the resort (on the bus--it really wasn't a bad ride, besides you need to soak up a little local color) we were welcomed in a most genuine and gracious way. The staff was just wonderful, making us comfortable while not making us feel as if they were "serving" us.

To those who said all the rooms were alike, I can only assume you never saw a suite. Our bathroom was a woman's dream--waterfall shower, jacuzzi tub, two sinks.... I still dream about it! Also, we did indeed have an oceanview--from our deck the ocean was but a hop, skip and a jump.

The food was outstanding. The wait for drinks was miniscule. The weather was gorgeous. The memories were priceless.

If you are down to earth and looking for a memorable vacation, this is your place.

It's hard to understand the bad reviews. My husband and I had the best time that one could imagine.

The staff was friendly, the service was great and the fun was endless. Additionally, there was fantastic food and it was in abundance, too. During our visit, we formed friendships with other couples and that provided even more fun.

The night entertainment on the beach was enjoyable. The beach was very appealing with crystal, clear water and the beach sports were endless. We also really enjoyed the glass bottom boat ride. It was tranquil and at peace on the water.

I must say, I have had a lot of massages in my life, but the one I had at the spa was the best I have experienced. We look forward to coming back every year.

4.0 stars A great vacation! Visited: July 2001

My wife and I just returned from Couples Negril. We had a great time, and we highly recommend this place.

The drive from the airport sucks. It's dangerous and depressing. The road is in terrible shape, and the poverty you see along the way is sobering. If you're not on your way to Negril on a Peace Corps mission, my advice is to fly. We flew back, and it cost $40.00 per person and it was 15 minutes vs. 2 hours.

Service at the resort was great. I don't know what anyone would complain about. I'm not saying that it could not have been better, but for a service force not allowed to accept tips (note: they do accept tips given discretely--and those tips go a long way), they are very good.

Food was very good to excellent. The best meals were in the beach grill, (jerk chicken), and the Otahite Restaraunt. Looking back, I would have made reservations to eat there every night if possible. We ate there two nights. Service was excellent. Food was excellent.

My wife and I are in our early 30's. Most of the guests there were around our age, and most seemed to be newlyweds. There was plenty to do there, but no pressure to do anything.

Anyone going here should pass on the shopping trips from the resort; they are a waste of time. You can buy the same stuff for the same price at the resort gift shop. Or if you take a 10-minute walk down the beach, there are people selling crafts, braiding hair, etc. for less than the places the resort takes you.

Jamaicans in and near the resort were warm, friendly people. Even the people selling stuff on the public beach (east of the RIU resort, next to Couples) are friendly and understand "no thanks." Outside the resort area, people seem to be a little more predatory; still very friendly, but more like hustlers.

If anyone's planning to go here and wants to ask us anything, feel free to e-mail us.

Couples is beautiful and all you would expect in a tropical vacation getaway. Service is generally excellent, with a few exceptions. Rooms could have been a little cleaner. There’s lots of fun and activities or just relaxing, whatever you want. The food is sensational, even for vegans/vegetarians.

We had a great time and would return. It’s very beautiful, but not a luxury resort. And the tipping rule does not apply to drivers, those who carry luggage for you, spa services or room service; they all expected something. The shopping trip was terrible. Everything was ridiculously expensive, but we really didn't go there to shop!

3.0 stars Nice resort, but would not go back Visited: July 2001

My husband and I just returned from Jamaica. We first stayed at Couples Ocho Rios and then we went to Couples Negril for three days. Couples Negril has beautiful grounds with ponds filled with goldfish. It was fun feeding the fish bread, as there are hundreds of them.

The beach was bigger than at Ocho Rios and the ocean was shallower at Negril; however, the beach at Negril is public, so anybody can go there. Couples Ocho Rios beach was private, which we liked.

The staff was very nice and the rooms were really neat and clean. The gardenview room was the best deal because there really are no oceanview rooms.

All in all, both resorts were great, but I think I would choose Couples Ocho Rios just because the beach is private, the staff and guests were friendlier, and I think Ocho Rios is a much more romantic place.

We went to Couples Negril for our honeymoon and the resort exceeded our expectations.

The staff and amenities were outstanding. As an active couple we took full advantage of the snorkeling and scuba trips, the golf, the day trips to Rick's Cafe, the Catamaran trip, the watersports and enjoyed the quieter side the resort had to offer during the evenings. The gentle swings before the wonderful meals, the naps in the hammock and the little notes left on your turned down bed at night made for the perfect balance.

The ride to the resort had some people wishing they flew directly to the resort, but it's not that bad.

As a honeymooner hoping for the dream honeymoon we were pleasantly surprised to have it be more than we had hoped for. Having visited Cuba, The Dominican Republic, Cancun and the Mayan Riviera, this is by far our favorite spot. You won't be disappointed!

5.0 stars Great Resort Visited: June 2001

My wife and I, along with another couple, just returned from Couples Negril. After reading the last couple of reviews on this site I must tell you I was concerned, but I couldn't disagree with them more.

This resort was amazing and the staff was friendly, helpful and eager to please. Ray and the rest of the entertainment staff were always there to make sure you had fun, without being too pushy. The waiters and bartenders were friendly and eager to help in any way you asked. The rooms aren't anything special, but they are nice and clean. The truth is, you don't spend much time in there anyway so it shouldn't be a big deal.

I would recomend that you not spend the extra money for the oceanview. Not many of the rooms have that great of an ocean view.

The couple we went with were married at the resort and the staff did a nice job with the ceremony. They were very pleased with their wedding.

All in all, I would highly recommend this resort. We intend on going back to visit our friend Ray and the rest of the Couple's staff very soon.

1.0 stars Worst vacation of my life--deplorable service! Visited: May 2001
Posted by klizee
We returned yesterday from Couples Negril in Jamaica. This was our second time to Jamaica, previously having stayed elsewhere.

In short, I would say that the service at Couples Negril was the worst of my life. We took my husband’s parents for their 70th birthday. We really wanted this to be memorable for them. We'd told them about the friendly people and the pampering and terrific service we'd had previously in Jamaica and since Couples advertises this too, we were expecting nothing less.

What we got were rude people at every corner, from the moment we got off of the bus, we were left standing there. Finally, someone came over and told us to step into the piano bar, where we waited and waited. They came in and told us our rooms would be ready in 45 minutes. We ate lunch, came back and waited for two more hours! The front desk was completely unorganized. No one knew what they were doing. It was a nightmare; you’d try to talk to someone and they would just say, "Oh, don't worry about it, it’s no problem." Sure it was no problem for them, they didn't care!

We basically lost most of that day of our vacation because they also didn’t know how to deliver baggage to the rooms. It took them two hours to get ours to us. We tried to talk to management and all we got were excuses and pass-the-buck comments instead of apologies and solutions.

Remember that when they say, "We'll be there in ten minutes," it means about two hours. Apparently, they can’t tell time either.

Beach-Red-Flag Service that we read about does not exist. We had our flag in the sand for over three hours. Not a single soul came by to take our drink order. The same went for most other couples there, too.

The watersports staff was so rude! We tried to talk to them about snorkeling and they looked at us as if we were talking about quantum physics.

No one speaks when you walk by. They acted like they were afraid they'd have to be friendly. Bar service was deplorable. I'm not sure what you have to do to get a drink. Even when you finally got their attention, it was clear that they only knew how to make the drinks listed. We asked for a simple dark rum with orange juice blended into it and you'd have thought we asked for the answer to the meaning of life—unbelievable.

I would not return here if they paid me. The service was truly horrible. One night at dinner we never did get our beverages! We were told that Couples is the lowest paying resort on the Island. The lack of worker morale shows.

We're pretty miserable that our entire vacation was so awful.

4.0 stars There's no better way to enjoy life than at Couples Negril. Visited: April 2001
Posted by ldespagnolis
My husband and I visited Couples Negril during Easter week in April. The weather was great, the food was great food (a-la-carte and buffet style themes), and the resort excursions were wonderful - you just have to sign up.

People were friendly, but not enough to feel like you belonged to their family. The hotel didn't give us that "intimacy" feeling. The all-inclusive was great and worth the money (and the drinks), but there were no choices for red or white wines, although the red they served us was really good.

There was not enough entertainment at night after 10:00 p.m. The beach was too short for walking (roughly 1/2 mile), but it was nice. However, watch for the sand bugs, especially at night.

The rooms were nice, not luxurious, but quaint. The hot water ran cold almost every night from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Also, get your braids done on the beach for less money and just as good of a result.

The hotel staff did a lot of pampering to returned guests (honeymooners and wedding parties). We'd go back, but there are too many more places to see first!

We did the Couples double take. We went first to Ocho Rios and then to Negril. Couples Negril has a beautiful beach and wonderful pool with a swim-up bar. The food is excellent. They do need to improve the staff service extended to the guests. Be sure when you leave to check for yourself that your luggage is on the bus. They told us ours was, and if we hadn't checked we would have gotten to the airport without our bags. On our next trip we will probably go to Couples Ocho Rios, as they did a much better job of taking care of us.

5.0 stars One of the best vacations we ever had! Visited: January 2001

We were originally booked on a cruise and it was canceled 36 hours before we were scheduled to leave, so (fortunately for us) we found this terrific deal to Couples, Negril. My hubby was taking me away for my 40th and what a way to turn 40... at Couples in Negril!

From the second we arrived, it was wonderful... the champagne greeting...the lovely garden view room...the great beach where we could be together (My husband is not a true sun worshipper, yet we were only inches apart, he in that oh, so cool hammock and me basking in the sun!), and don't forget the red flag service - having drinks delivered. Also, the chair covers that also turned into floats - just floating around Bloody Bay in that beautiful ocean! And let's not forget mentioning the pool - big, pretty and a great pool bar and two Jacuzzis!

The staff couldn't do enough for you! The bartenders had those special tropical drinks just waiting. The food was excellent. The gourmet dining at Otahite was superb. Room service for breakfast was always just on time and perfect to start the morning.

Perfect amount of activities... could do as much or as little as you wanted. No hassles! Snorkeling was awesome, even though the sea was a little rough! The catamaran sail to the Pickled Parrot was an experience and the kayak to that private cove over by the Point was awesome!

We have traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean and Couples Negril was definitely a place we would return in a heartbeat!

This was our first trip to Jamaica and Couples made it great. The moment you arrive you know this place is going to be great, because you are greeted by a friendly staff member who hands you a cool cloth followed by a glass of champagne(how cool is that?). The service is first class, the food gourmet.

The rooms are clean and well decorated. We stayed in a garden view room, very private. While laying on the beach don't forget to ask for the red flag, this allows you to just stick it in the sand when you desire something to drink(taking relaxation to the next level).

If you are looking for a relaxing beach vacation (kid free), then this is the place for you. I know we will be going back again.

Take the time to read this, because we hope it’s helpful! We picked this place without talking to anyone who had ever been there before, and I have to tell you it was PARADISE! The resort is only two years old and that's just enough time to make everything run smoothly. The entire staff was friendly, and willing to bend over backwards for us. Our honeymoon was perfect. As for the small part of the beach that allows guests to sunbathe nude, you don't even know it's there, it's so discrete, which is great. Everything good about the resort is true. I would go back in a second, everything exceeds all that you've read about why it’s great. Truthfully, if I had to say anything negative about the trip at all, it would be the following: The plane ride, of course, and the humidity (don't go in July) although we were practically the only people there so we had the entire place to ourselves. Men, bring a pair of dress pants for the gourmet restaurant. (My husband didn't think he would need a pair of pants in Jamaica when it’s 95 degrees with 80% humidity!) Who knew? You do eat all meals in open-air sites so bring bug spray for skin, "OFF" works for mosquitoes, but bring something for the No-seeums. These tiny bugs were the worst part of our trip! We were there for eight days, and I guess we were eaten alive and didn't even know it--until we got home! I looked like I had Chicken Pox. I went to doctor because I had 300 bites all over legs and arms. If you go, don’t walk on the sand beach after sundown; that’s when they bite. And guess what? You don't "see-um". Their welts come out about four days later and you’ll itch for a week. So definitely visit the nurses station and ask them for their remedy. They have great stuff, if not, once you get home visit your local drug store and buy mosquito bite-cymilium cream. It works on stings from no-seeums, bees, wasps, man o'war and jellyfish.

At the bars, which are all within 100 feet of each other, were stocked with everything you could want. It was great with premium alcohol, all-included and as much as you want. We weren't even finished with the drink in our hand and they would be pushing another in our direction. Tennison and Kirkpatrick were great bartenders at the swim-up bar. They were so nice, always smiling and telling their stories! It was a blast! Staying in a garden room is the best deal. We actually stayed an extra day by choosing the garden room instead of an upgraded room. Everything really is included! The Catamaran cruise is the ultimate; they take you to a place to jump off a cliff or swing on a rope into the warm turquoise water--incredible! Visit Couples Negril, you won't be disappointed! It’s truly UNBELIEVABLE!

What a wonderful vacation; a beautiful property, great service, nice people, a do as much or as little as you want atmosphere. Don't pay for an oceanffront - rooms are all the same - buildings 1000 and 2000 were good! Definitely take the glass bottom boat tour - lots of fun. The Catamaran cruise to the pickled parrot was fun too. Do the rope swing and cliff diving/jumping if you dare! Snorkeling was decent.

Beautiful beach, plenty of space, shade or sun, ample lounge chairs and red flag service for drinks if you don't feel like walking the 25 feet to the bar! Everyone we met here (and we made lots of buddies), all said the same thing..."This place is awesome."

One suggestion, definitely take the plane from MoBay to Negril - we heard the bus ride was rough. We were on the beach by 1:30 pm, after a flight from Newark at 7:40 am. Bar service was good, premium liquors.

Awesome vacation! Loved every second of it! Would definitely return!

3.0 stars New/nice resort, but wouldn't go back Visited: December 1969
Posted by bsmith
After visiting Couples Ocho, we stayed at Couples Negril for 3 nights. This resort is only a year old. Decor is in pastel bohemian colors. It is layed out in the configuration of a 3, the upper center consisting of the lobby, the Piano Bar and gift shops with two spiral staircases leading you to the ground level. The view of the resort from this upper location was breathtaking.

On ground level, you will find the main pool (depth of pool 4 1/2 deep) with a hot tub at each end, plus there is a waterfall in the pool that dumps into another pool with a swim up bar. There are plenty of lounge chairs around the pool and beach area.

On this lower level, you will find these restaurants: The Terrace (open-air) for breakfast & lunch, and menu style dinner, dress is casual, The Elegant Otaheite Gourmet Restaurant, (air-conditioned) fancy in decor, small couches with tables in front of them, menu, seven course dinner, dress code is long pants/collared shirts for men and dresses for ladies, and the Beach Grill, (open-air) which serves burgers, hotdogs, jerk chicken during the day and at night it's casual dress and ordering from a menu. All the food was excellent, no complaints. Usually at both the Terrace and Beach Grill there is live instrumental music to eat by. There are three bars, swimup bar, beach bar, and main bar (next to Terrace Restaurant) and the Piano Bar, premium liquor served. At night there was nightly entertainment, which was good.

This resort has beautiful foliage and trees everywhere, with winding sidewalks through out the resort. The wedding gazebo was a thatched roof hut in front of a natural pond. The rooms are configured in "U" shapes on each side of the center section. The blocks of rooms resemble a motel not a hotel, 5 blocks are garden view, while 4 blocks are ocean view. It was disappointing, to tell you the truth they are not ocean view, because we stayed in the deluxe ocean view, from the balcony you looked at another block of rooms and foliage, not the ocean. If you go here, save the money and get a garden view room.

The room is nothing special, entire floor was ceramic tile, no carpet, king size bed, low to the floor, bohemian tapesty on wall behind bed, TV, radio/cd player, a dresser in the corner which consisted of four wicker boxes stacked on each other, shower/tub with hairdryer, water pressure good, the closet in the room has wooden beads hanging down to represent closet doors, all rooms had balconies. Maid service good. There was room service for breakfast, coffee and pastries.

Off site excursions included a trip to Ricks Cafe, shopping trip, catamaran cruise and golf. The beach was beautiful, long and wide, white powdery sand, water was calm, you could walk out some distance, only chest deep and see schools of fish swimming around. At one end of the beach is the water sports section, water skiing, snorkeling, scuba diving, boating, and parasailing. At the other end of the beach is Grand Lido Negril.

Some litature advertises a section of the beach to be "a la natural" sunbathing while other indicate clothing optional. It was a small area located next to the water sports area, and the public beach on the other side of it. There was plenty of foot traffic and gawking by guests and locals in front of this area, as people walked by on the beach, no privacy. There was a bar on the nude side, self serve, sometimes there was and sometimes there wasn't any beer only sodas, no liquor and no food service. This was very disappointing compared to the sister resort of Ocho Rios. The resort was nice but will not go back.

This was a much needed getaway and we were very satisfied. The service is wonderful with a friendly staff. The food was great, especially if you are adventurous. The beach is not too crowded, watersports are there if you want.

Try to get a room in the first or second block, as the others are closer to the noise from the restaurants. We moved after the first night and they were very accomodating. The water is very clean and the pool is beautiful.

Some younger couples complained there was not much nightlife, but we did not care for that anyway, so we were happy. The atmosphere is perfect and all in all, it is a great getaway.
