Wow! Visited: June 2009 Posted by laviniaj25 The hotel was lovely. The art work was amazing, and they are all from local artists. They were not all paintings. Some pieces were metalwork, light sculptures and installations. The hotel was a wonder to look at. It was a treat to just walk around, or sit at the rooftop garden and have drinks by candle light overlooking Portland. The rooftop looks like a scene from Alice in Wonderland. This hotel is not for everyone. If you like a busy, all-inclusive party environment, this is not for you. However, if you like to stay somewhere adventurous and has a hint of a 1920 speakeasy throwback, this is definitely the place for you. Location-wise, it was a bit out of the way if you want to walk into Port Antonio. However, a taxi was only $50-75 dollars away. There were great restaurants in the area, and the hotel restaurant wasn't that bad either. It may be best for the special treat as you can get a bit too used to the silver service. If you want to experience the old Jamaica a la Ian Fleming, this is the place. If it gets to be too much for you, San San Beach, Boston Jerk Town, Port Antonio, Reach Falls, Sommerset Falls, Blue Lagon.. are not that far away. 0 users found this review helpful. 0 found this review unhelpful. It was lovely and expensive, but not hurricane friendly. The day before the storm was scary, considering we really had no idea what we were in for. We arrived at the Jamaica Palace Hotel terrified of what would come of us. The owner and the staff at Jamaica Palace made us very comfortable, and took such good care of us. The round beds were great. And even though the entire place was boarded up, it was still beautiful. The food was good, too. We are planning another trip back so we can see Jamaica Palace at its best. A quiet, relaxing and private escape. Visited: August 2002 Posted by nmcstar This was a very nice hotel. The accommodations were unique --- each room had different decor. The one we stayed in had a round bed, with bold, dramatic colors and accessories. The hotel was tucked away, quiet, well-run, and had a very luxurios feel. It was also not too expensive. I gave it four stars for its nice, clean, friendly, unique, and warm environment. Visited: March 2002 Posted by alt My girlfriend (who is Jamaican) and myself travelled over from Grand Cayman fro a few days. We wanted the best hotel. The web-site made it look good and my g/f's recollectiosn from 10 years ago encouraged us to book. It was awful ! It was high season yet we were the only guests there...the taxi driver laughed that we would consider staying there ! The place was empty, the pool was not filled and looked as if it hadn't been for years ! The hotel was run down. We had absolutely no running water in our room for a shwoer teh first night because they turn it off to save money ! We went to bed dirty ! We had mistakenly booked the all-in package . Yuck ! Our dinner vthat night was a cabbage salad and a piece of frozen fish with tinned mixed vegetables !We complained to the Austrian rip-off owner/manager and told him we were leaving the next day as it was so bad. We said we'd pay for one night but expected our money back ! They refused. The WORST hotel experience in my life.
