Home Sweet Home Resort, Negril Area traveler review

This is my home away from home. Visited: April 2008
Posted by rastaprincess
I have been staying here since December 2006, and just returned from a visit May 3, 2008. Forget those all-inclusives and stay here. If you truly want to experience Jamaica, this is your spot.

Home Sweet Home is intimate and cozy with only 14 rooms. The rooms are no frills, but they are clean. The staff is friendly and outgoing. I usually stay during the off season when it is not fully staffed, but I'm okay with that because it gives me a chance to mingle with the locals.

There are many places within walking distance to have a cheap, good meal.

I was here once during "high" season, and it was amazing! They have a restaurant on site with great food. I am a woman who travels alone, and the staff looked out for my safety which is important to me. I stayed at one of the beachside resorts once, and was overcome by watching the locals "hustling" the tourists on the beach.

The vibes on the cliffs are easy and laid back. Home Sweet Home is the perfect place to decompress. The property is beautiful and serene, with fabulous views of the ocean - and spectacular sunsets in the evening.

Charlie, leave the light on for me because I'll be back in October! I'm already counting the months!

It is like going home to relax. They have great food, people and fantastic snorkeling right off the front of the property.

Be sure to catch the sunsets with a rum punch on the lounge chairs overlooking the deep blue sea.

Samsara Hotel, Negril Area traveler review

I got my money's worth. Visited: December 2007

We stayed here four days and paid rock bottom prices. We opted out of the all-inclusive, which was a good call because the hotel food was mediocre at best.

Pros: The location was awesome, and was very close to some amazing (and cheap) local eateries. The hotel provided shuttles to the beach each day. It was far enough away from the beach so we weren't completly hounded when we stepped out the door.

The room was huge, not brand new, but decently clean. The view was gorgeous.

The staff was mostly friendly and helpful.

One strange thing: They claimed to be at full capacity, but the place seemed empty except for a few other couples.

Dickie's Best Kept Secret, Jamaica traveler review

It was not worth it, but we will never forget it. Visited: November 1999
Posted by roxie5
Dixie's Best Kept Secret was nothing special. The food was okay, but we expected better.

It was very confined. We sat on the first level (one set of stairs down from the main door). I had to get up every time more people came in, so they could get by me to go to a lower level. It was very hot inside - there was no air conditioning.

All they served was Red Stripe beer. There were no wines or other alcoholic beverages. Also, there was no music. The restauarant was very close to the road, and we could hear every car and truck go by.

There was also a strong smell of what smelled like pot in the air. Our "waitress" looked extremely out of it, too.

Royal Decameron Club Caribbean, North Coast Area traveler review

We had an unpleasant experience here. Visited: April 2008
Posted by harryandwife
My wife and I were hoping for a memorable 14th anniversary, and decided to make Club Caribbean our place of choice. We loved the "on the beach" cottage concept, and had stayed here before.

When we got here, we waited for a very long time to be shown where we would stay for the weekend. I must say, I was so angry (to put it mild) to see where they expected us to stay. It seemed they converted gift shops into rooms with concrete slabs for the dressing table. I believe the beds were also afixed to the floor without even a bed head. The room was white, and lead into a bathroom without doors.

We complained bitterly, but got the run around. We were given the promise about a new room the following day. We rejected that offer, and they began to tell us that foreigners got preference. That blew our tops, and we demanded a complete refund, even though they wanted to take a percentage because we were on the property.

I am sorry for the "foreigners" who travel thousand of miles without the option of a refund or an option to go elsewhere. We will never go back there.

As I said, we were fortunate, and went to Club Ambiance down the road from them, that was a pleasant surprise. We were treated not like commoners, but like royalty.

Seacrest Beach Hotel, North Coast Area traveler review

This place was scary. Visited: February 2008
Posted by horrifiedbyseacrest
The only reason we were here was because we got bumped from the resort we should have stayed in. We were only here for one night, and we left as soon as we could the next morning.

It seemed like everyone staying at the Seacrest that night was someone who had been bumped from our resort, no one was actually supposed to be a Seacrest guest.

This place was an absolute dump. The sliding doors didn't lock, the bathroom was small and filthy, and the beds weren't made (and looked like someone else had slept in them).

Also, the pool was missing about three feet of water, and was closed. We were afraid that something was going to come crawling out of corners. The shower barely worked, too.

All in all, I can't imagine that this place would even be rated as high as a two-star.

Beach House Villas, Negril Area traveler review

Our stay at the Beach House was fun. Visited: March 2008
Posted by jjohn
My girlfriend and I stayed in the Beach House Villa this March, and I can't tell you how much fun we had in Negril.

I'd have to say that the Beach House Villa may just be the nicest place in Negril...which was really surprising for the cost. It had a large balcony facing the sea where we watched amazing sunsets each night!

There was a bar and restaurant right next door, and the food was great...really convenient for drinks, too! We made good use of it!

Negril Beach was beautiful...even the locals told us that Negril was one of the most beautiful places in Jamaica.

Besides the restaurant next door, there were a lot of them on the beach, which was very cool. We were able to walk just about everywhere we wanted to go during our trip.

We did take a taxi up to the market that was on the end of the beach, but that was only because we didn't want to carry all of our groceries back.

A guy staying in the Penthouse Villa above us had a zodiac, and used it to give us a lift across the bay to the market to grab beers, which was definitely cooler than the taxi. But, the taxis were cheap, and you could catch them just about anywhere - so it was not a bad way to get around.

We had a great time on our trip, and would definitely recommend going to Negril. When you do, stay at the Beach House, it was awesome! We'll be back again!

I have been vacationing at Home Sweet Home since I was 15 years old, and have gone back once a year since - and I am now 31.

I love the resort's views of the ocean from the cliffs and balconies. It's a great place to cliff jump, snorkel, read and hang with your friends and family.

Moondance Villas - Azure Sky, Jamaica traveler review

This was a beautiful resort with fantastic service. Visited: April 2008
Posted by amymcquillen
I just came back from a stay at Moon Dance Villas (4/2 through 4/6) with two friends, and it was amazing! From the moment we got to the property until the moment we left, every detail was thought of.

We stayed in Azure Sky, the four-bedroom villa, and it was perfect. We each had our own bedroom, and two of us had Jacuzzis on our private balconies. All of the rooms and balconies had spectacular views of the Caribbean! Right outside our villa was a private, beachfront pool, just for us. It was great being able to go back and forth from the ocean to the pool all day long.

The staff at the Villas was also outstanding. Our chef, Robert, was wonderful, and all of the meals were delicious (I especially recommend the salads at lunch and the pastas at dinner!).

Our bartender was Barry, and he was on-hand all the time, at the beach or pool, whether we needed a refill or not! Usually, we took the refill, though. Polly, our housekeeper, kept our rooms tidy and always left plenty of beach towels. Our concierge, Oneika, did a great job of taking care of us as well, setting up snorkeling and anything else we wanted.

The whole complex was beautiful and in a great spot on Seven Mile Beach. Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville was two doors down the beach, and a fun place to hang out after hours.

I would recommend Moon Dance Villas to anyone looking to have a relaxing, luxurious vacation. The service and surroundings made the cost well worth it. We’ll be going back soon - I hope!

Nirvana on the Beach, Negril Area traveler review

This was a great getaway on the beach. Visited: April 2008
Posted by kelarz
It was our first time staying on the beach at Negril. We usually stay in the cliffs, so this was a new experience for us.

We really loved Nirvana. The property was maintained very well, with lots of pretty plants, hammocks and swings to relax in. In addition, the location was great because we were close to many beach bars and some good restaurants.

It was very family-friendly, also. They had a playhouse full of toys and beach floats, as well as swings for kids to enjoy.

It was very safe for families, too. It had a gate around the property, and the security is great.

We plan to go back someday with our son.

If you are looking for an inexpensive, clean and comfortable place to stay in Negril, check out Home Sweet Home. Located on the cliffs, away from the hustle and bustle of the beach scene, HSH offers a great way to enjoy Jamaica.

Friendly helpful staff, good food and location are all pluses to the small resort. The guests are almost always people you would want to hang out with and enjoy a beautiful sunset.

Be sure to check out room 12 for amazing view of the ocean day and night.

Also, I received a great massage on the cliffs, complete with the sounds of the ocean and a warm Jamaican breeze. It was amazing!

There was much to do and many fun things to see.

I would recommend it!

I have wonderful memories of the hotel. Visited: September 2008
Posted by jenkins
The first year I was here was in 1986. That year they gave a beach jacket and a matching bag to all the guests. I have saved mine all these years.

I have been to this resort 12 times. The last time I was here was in 2005. They also gave a beautiful gift to all the guests.

I have been here several times a few days before a hurricane and/ or after a hurricane. I love this resort.

I know I will never be able to go back, so I will always keep the wonderful memories of the resort and of the wonderful staff throughout the years. Thank you!

Negril Gardens Beach Resort, Negril Area traveler review

We loved this place! Visited: February 2007
Posted by msmizeur
We stayed here with eight other people and just loved it.

The staff was wonderful! We fell in love with each and every one of them.

The beach was one of the best in Negril. It had more lawn chairs and trees to get out of the sun. It was also nice to be able to eat and drink right out on the beach. The bar was right off the beach just a couple of feet.

The rooms were small, yet large enough and very clean. The views are excellent. We were fortunate enough to get an ocean view room. They all have little patios and tables and chairs on them.

The beach staff really watched the locals so they don't bother you when you are on the beach. That was nice!

We have been to Negril many times, and this was far and above our favorite place so far. It was a smaller resort with all of the big resort amenities.

Nirvana on the Beach, Negril Area traveler review

Nirvana: The way Negril should be! Visited: November 2007
Posted by kathyandjack
Last November, my husband and I spent nine glorious days at Nirvana - a reasonably priced, well appointed bastion of the "old Negril" located in the best part of the town's famous seven-mile beach.

Here, there are no fancy atriums, no aestheticians waiting to slather you with exotic oils, and no sub-standard all-inclusive meal plans; just a lovely private beach, comfortable bungalows and the most friendly and accommodating staff we have ever met at any of the luxury resorts we have stayed in on our eight visits to Jamaica!

Leon, our driver, picked us up at the airport in Mo Bay, having had to wait two hours due to our delayed arrival. He was smiling, happy we finally arrived, and willing to stop for beverages and snacks en route to Negril.

At Nirvana, we were greeted by Sigi, the manager, who made sure we found our bungalow satisfactory. And, in spite of intermittent rain, we spent most of our vacation on their expansive, private beach where Rocky looked on, assuring our privacy and arranging snorkeling and other activities.

We felt that the entire staff at Nirvana were committed unconditionally to our comfort and well-being and did not, at any point of our stay, expect extra compensation.

We recommend Nirvana for romantic getaways and families alike, and will definitely stay there on our next visit to Negril.
