DeMontevin Lodge, Port Antonio Area traveler review

This was a very nice place. Visited: October 2005
Posted by brighteyes
My boyfriend and I stayed at DeMontevin Lodge from September 30th to October 3rd. My boyfriend is from Jamaica, and he really liked the place, so this was why we stayed here.

I did not like the lodge at first, but it grew on me and we really had a nice time here. We liked the fact that there was someone there at night to protect the quests.

The lodge was also very clean and quiet. In addition, the staff was very friendly.

The only complaint that I had about the place was that there were little fire ants all over the place. They were in the bed, on the floors, etc. They bit my boyfriend and me all night long.

I also wish that there was room service available, due to the fact that we had to leave out of the lodge for everything to eat or drink.

Overall, though, we enjoyed our stay at the lodge.

Jamaica Palace Hotel, Port Antonio Area traveler review

It was a wonderful hotel - even in a hurricane! Visited: July 2005
Posted by elaine_miller
My family was booked in a Blue Lagoon Villa from 7/2/05 through 7/9/05. It was lovely and expensive, but not hurricane friendly.

The day before the storm was scary, considering we really had no idea what we were in for. We arrived at the Jamaica Palace Hotel terrified of what would come of us. The owner and the staff at Jamaica Palace made us very comfortable, and took such good care of us.

The round beds were great. And even though the entire place was boarded up, it was still beautiful. The food was good, too.

We are planning another trip back so we can see Jamaica Palace at its best. It was a great hotel, and we highly recommend it. Customer service here was absolutely top notch!

Trident Villas and Hotel, Port Antonio Area traveler review

This was a peaceful, friendly, and beautiful place every couple should visit. Visited: March 2004
Posted by sassy_ba
My husband and I go to Jamaica often, and usually stay in the larger areas of the island. But this time we decided on a quiet vacation. We made a perfect pick!

This place gave us a true feel of Jamaica, not just "vacation". It was located 20 minutes out of Port Antonio, but was an amazing place to stay, with beautiful views. We were able to see the dreamy castle of the owner, whom we met on several occasions.

The food was to die for. It was a little pricy, but after we tasted it, it was worth it.

If relaxation is what you're after, and you rent a car, this is the place to go!

Goblin Hill is a gem! Visited: March 2004
Posted by faithie
We had a 13-day stay at Goblin Hill and cannot wait to return. The grounds were lush, charming and beautiful! The staff was super, very friendly, and our housekeeper, Joan, was amazing.

This was truly a great property. We went with our two children and found it a perfect place for them. The villas were like small houses. Also, Port Antonio was incredibly beautiful and Goblin Hill was central to much of the sites. We miss you Goblin Hill!

Hotel Mocking Bird Hill, Port Antonio Area traveler review

This was a good place to relax. Visited: June 2003
Posted by kaz_wba
The Hotel Mocking Bird Hill was a stunning place with good facilities for someone with limited mobility. My husband and I had a wonderful, relaxing holiday.

The hotel was beautiful and the food was amazing. We had a great time sampling all the different meals, and watching fireflies amid the sounds of the forest. The homemade breads were especially delicious. The vegetarian menu was very good and there was a good choice every night. The staff was really friendly and helpful. They made our holiday really special.

The rooms were beautiful with a verandah and a hammock looking out towards the sea. It was also nice to see that they were so environmentally conscious.

We really enjoyed our stay. The hotel was far enough away from town to have a quiet time, but near enough to town to make it easy enough for sightseeing.

There was so much to see and do that we only really skimmed the surface. We left a part of us in Port Antonio and will definitely be going back to stay at Hotel Mocking Bird Hill.

We were very disappointed with our honeymoon here. We've learned that a pretty brochure means nothing. Its just like any other hotel and conference center. We had been expecting something special.

Jamaica Palace Hotel, Port Antonio Area traveler review

Absolute rip - off ! Visited: March 2002
Posted by alt
My girlfriend (who is Jamaican) and myself travelled over from Grand Cayman fro a few days. We wanted the best hotel. The web-site made it look good and my g/f's recollectiosn from 10 years ago encouraged us to book. It was awful ! It was high season yet we were the only guests there...the taxi driver laughed that we would consider staying there ! The place was empty, the pool was not filled and looked as if it hadn't been for years ! The hotel was run down. We had absolutely no running water in our room for a shwoer teh first night because they turn it off to save money ! We went to bed dirty ! We had mistakenly booked the all-in package . Yuck ! Our dinner vthat night was a cabbage salad and a piece of frozen fish with tinned mixed vegetables !We complained to the Austrian rip-off owner/manager and told him we were leaving the next day as it was so bad. We said we'd pay for one night but expected our money back ! They refused. The WORST hotel experience in my life. Stay there at your peril !

The best three vacations ever! Visited: March 2002

My family and I have traveled to Spa Dragon on three vacations. We just had to go back for more. They were the most relaxing and worthwhile trips I had ever taken.

Spa Dragon is the perfect vaction place if you just want to relax and lay in the sun - not to mention the famous "Cruise" bar!

My boyfriend and I were not getting along, so we went on a trip. Before, we had called it quits on the relationship. And now, after the trip to Goblin Hill, we are going to have a baby and we are getting married. Thank you, Goblin Hill, for a magical time.

A tranquil and beautiful environment. Visited: October 2002

I'm a Jamaican by birth, but when I travel home and want to escape the "craziness" of family, I go to Portland...what I believe to be the most beautiful of all the parishes.

I just happened upon Goblin Hills from a web search and decided to give it a try. I absolutely fell in love with it. I didn't think anything could compete with the awesome natural beauty of my surroundings, but experiencing the professional and warm staff at Goblin Hills just added to an already perfect retreat.

It will definitely be an annual destination spot for me! I highly recommend it to couples as well as loners looking for a quiet getaway.

This was a surprisingly good facility. The building was old, with amazing old fashioned beds and a cool restaurant. It was especially cool to find this in these rough surroundings.

This is a must if you are going to this part of Jamaica.

DeMontevin Lodge, Port Antonio Area traveler review

We enjoyed our stay at De Montevin Lodge. Visited: January 2003
Posted by jim2
Our party usually heads for Negril, but in 2003 we decided to visit Port Antonio. Our first stop was the De Montevin Lodge.

It was a beautiful Victorian-era home that had been converted into a guesthouse. Most of its stateliness and ornamental detail had been preserved for the traveler to enjoy. De Montevin Lodge was perfect if you’re looking for a clean, safe and affordable place to sleep.

We walked around the rocky peninsula and had a look at the neighborhood and the quaint mall just a few blocks away in town. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon, and it was rather littered and run-down looking.

Everything was closed, but we quickly found two ATMs a few blocks into town. There were other guesthouses in the immediate neighborhood. Most of the short streets on the small peninsula were rather steep and poorly maintained. My sandals were not appropriate. There wa a fenced school at the end.

We decided in advance that we’d eat dinner that night at Hotel Mocking Bird Hill, which was very nice. But it was $350.00 for the six of us. The view was breathtaking, though.

Between the barking dogs, the crowing roosters and my snoring roommate, I found sleeping hard. I’m more used to sirens and honking horns. My traveling companions said they slept well.

Monday morning the streets were all being swept, and the neighborhood was flooded with uniformed children on their way to school. It was lovely.

The lodge was gated and seemed secure. The rooms had televisions, and some had ceiling fans. I looked at every room on the second floor, and they looked comfortable, bright and airy. One large room had three single beds. The bathroom facilities were clean, but I would give them a 5 on a scale of 1 to 10.

This was not a resort, and there were no recreation facilities. The cocktail bar was closed. The dining room was very large and spotlessly clean. We had a look at the town and at the new port area built for cruise ships.

It had the feel of a busy town, and it was a bit too big for us. The sites were too far away for walking, and there was not much of interest for the casual tourist. We stopped to fill the tank at a station west of town where only attractive women worked the pumps wearing flattering jeans and clean white shirts. What a great idea!

The road from MoBay to PA was under construction. The ride took 4.5 hours. It was very bumpy - but scenic. There were many gated and manicured entrances to exclusive resorts all along the way. Sudden turns to avoid potholes kept all passengers alert. You will need to stop and have a break.

The drivers also enjoy a break, stop in Ocho Rios and eat. Our driver in PA was Dwight. He likes Celine Dion, so someone bring him a new CD. His is all worn out. He also needs a new Bible for the same reason.

Jamaica Palace Hotel, Port Antonio Area traveler review

A quiet, relaxing and private escape. Visited: August 2002
Posted by nmcstar
This was a very nice hotel. The accommodations were unique --- each room had different decor. The one we stayed in had a round bed, with bold, dramatic colors and accessories.

The hotel was tucked away, quiet, well-run, and had a very luxurios feel. It was also not too expensive. I gave it four stars for its nice, clean, friendly, unique, and warm environment.

If you are looking to get away from all-inclusive places, this is a good choice.

I stayed at Goblin Hill at the recommendation of a friend. I had a wonderful time. The view from the villa was out of this world. The food, prepared by a wonderful housekeeper, was excellent. If you are looking for rest and relaxation, this is definitely the place to go. Portland is a beautiful Parish.

It is absolutely great! Visited: March 2001

Last March, I took a group of 36 nursing students to Goblin Hill for a Saturday night. The manager was friendly and gracious with special service for us.

The rooms were beautiful...the huge windows open in the room were like sleeping outside at night, the breeze flowed through the rooms, the elegant furniture...clean and fresh.

The tables were set with wonderful food and arranged with artistic style. Most of the students said they were coming back for their honeymoons or bringing family. We love it here! We are coming back!

I have stayed here in 1986, 2000, and 2001. I mention this because it was totally remodeled in the spring of 2001 (and the prices jumped accordingly, to $68 for double and $105 for triple).

It is a stately old Victorian hotel, once worn-down but now beautifully restored. It is in a quiet, convenient location, with a great view of the harbor. It is safe and secure, too.

Disappointed - the hotel was generally run down and neglected Visited: December 2001
Posted by carolkinch
We experienced problems as soon as we landed at Kingston airport. It was a very long journey to reach Dragon Bay via unmade roads. Our room was damp and needed a good coat of paint, the bathroom had mold around the bath. We have visited several Caribbean islands, so we were not novices. The menus in both restaurants needed to be improved and variation would be a good start. I could go on! We will not be returning to Dragon Bay.

I stayed at this lodge while volunteering in one of Jamaica's Blue Mountain communities. We had a free weekend and we all decided to go to Port Antonio for the weekend.

We stayed at DeMontevin Lodge and really enjoyed our stay. The rooms were clean and the service was exceptional.

I would recommend DeMontevin Lodge to any travellers who are looking at staying in Port Antonio. Also, it was a very short walk to downtown and close to the local attractions.
