It is so sad what happened to southern Montserrat. We stayed at this lovely property in March 1989, and the owners could not have been more gracious. They had a wonderful restaurant, too. I will never forget this place. My husband and I have great memories of it.

We found this little piece of paradise on the web. After some very cordial and informative emails and a phone conversation, we planned our week stay. We have traveled all over the world, but we have to say that Gingerbread Hill is our favorite place on the planet. We would urge anyone reading this to check it out and go for a visit yourselves. Words can tell the tale.

I enjoyed watching beautiful sunsets from this villa. The beach was secluded, and located just in a five-minute walk. They offer great service in a tranquil location.

Vue Pointe offers warm hospitality in a beautiful setting - it's a favorite resort. Visited: May 2006 |

It was wonderful to return to the Vue Pointe and to experience again the warm hospitality of the Osbornes and the relaxing ambiance of the resort. The setting is picturesque, the cottages are spacious and private, and the staff are the friendliest we have encountered anywhere. As in our dreams of an ideal Caribbean vacation, Montserrat is a lush, scenic, tropical island. Now there is the added interest of a somewhat active volcano (that can be seen from the Vue Pointe). We had an extremely enjoyable week, and look forward to our next opportunity to return to the Vue Pointe.

Pam and I spent our Christmas vacation at this superb little hostelry & were welcomed like family by the gracious proprietors, Lou & Shirley Spycalla. Erindell consists of the Spycalla main house and two separate efficiency-like apartments next to the pool with an ocean view. The units have two twin beds; cable TV with US, BBC, & local channels; a small fridge, hotplate, toaster, & coffee maker. Local calls are free. The Spycallas provide a snack/fruit basket, a few soft drinks, continental breakfast, & laundry service all included in the rate. The continental included fresh fruit, juice or coffee, choice of toast and/or cold cereal. Fancier breakfasts are discounted (omelettes are fantastic), lunch & dinner are afforable and delicious. Try Lou's great grilled cheeses or tuna melts ($3.00 US). Clubs & burgers are in the 4-6 dollar range, & home cooked dinners for around $10-$14.The end unit has sliding glass doors to the pool deck equipped with chaises, pool floats & a table/chairs. There's a closet with iron/board & lots of drawer space. The bathroom has a big shower, hot water, a vanity with toiletry storage, & 110 V electricity. A hairdyer was provided & other nice touches: shampoo, lotion, facial tissues. The bed/living area was cooled by a 3 speed ceiling fan. The village of Salem is a mile walk: a supermarket, bars with local flavor, & affordable restaurants (Wilson's, The Attic, Gourmet Garden) are a little farther along. We walked the first 2 days then rented the Spycalla's 2nd car for the last 5; $25 per day plus gas. If theirs isn't available, they can reserve another one. Don't miss the volcano observatories overlooking the active Soufriere Hills Volcano, in various stages of eruption since 1995. Violent pyroclastic, ash & lava flows in the late '90s required evacuation of the southern 60% of the island and buried the capital of Plymouth under thick debris--"a modern-day Pompeii". The Spycallas can arrange or take you on a jeep tour into the "daytime exclusion zone" where you can safely view the utterly fascinating power of nature from hills (St. George's, Richmond, & Cork) overlooking the devastated Plymouth. The volcano is in a quiet stage, spewing small clouds of steam & ash. Erindell's greatest asset is the chance to share time with an authentic Caribbean family on one of the friendliest islands we've ever visited. Shirley was born in Trinidad & Lou in Wisconsin, but both are long-time Montserratians. Shirley's sisters, brother, cousin, and many friends visited for Christmas, each one reaching out to welcome us and sharing their stories. If you are searching for the real Caribbean, this is it--a 5 star guesthouse!

Tropical Mansion Suite Hotel was truly Paradise! Visited: August 2005 |

My sister and I stayed at the Tropical Mansion Suites in August 2005. We were amazed! From the moment we entered the hotel grounds, we felt like we were in paradise. The combination of lush greenery and bright tropical flowers was breathtaking. We were greeted by the hotel staff and shown to our bedroom suites that were fully furnished with beautiful island decor. The rooms were very spacious. It was a home away from home which provided everything we needed, including an iron. The management went out of their way to make guests comfortable. Everyone always greeted us with a smile. They really seemed to take pride in their hospitality. We loved the accommodations and staff at Tropical Mansion. Every member of their staff made us feel right at home and helped with any inquiries we had. The restaurant setting was peaceful with wonderful views. The menu changed regularly, the food was delicious, everything tasted fresh. There were lots of fruits and exotic drinks made with papaya, banana or guava. The hotel would be perfect for business people who like to work in a quiet and relaxed environment. We can't say enough good things about our stay here. If you decide to go to Montserrat, be sure to make the Tropical Mansion Suites the hotel of your choice.

From arrival to departure a week later there was very little, if anything, to criticize. The staff and management were efficient and friendly (but not over friendly, thank goodness!). The impression given was "nothing was too much trouble". We had an excellent week - and what a wonderful change from the plastic Hiltons, Ramadas, etc., etc.

Wow! What a trip. The people here were the friendliest people I have ever met in my travels around the world. The food was simply the best. I never had one bad meal, and I ate everything. The water was so good, you could drink it right from the tap -something which is unheard of in the Caribbean. Also, there was no crime. I felt very safe the whole time I was here. We even left our hotel unlocked. Merle Galloway at the Tropical Mansion Suites, definitely went above and beyond the call of duty to make this an experience of a lifetime. She even personally picked us up at the ferry when we arrived. This was the way a vacation should be. And we can't wait to go back. Montserrat is the way the Caribbean should be.
