Our experience in this hotel was better than I had expected.

The rooms were beautiful and very big. The staff was awesome. They were very attentive to all our needs. Also, the facilities were beautiful.

The Wyndham had a wonderful location. The island is a must see. They had the best beaches in the Caribbean and were not crowded (actually deserted and romantic). Also, the water and sand were great.

I would highly recommend staying here if you like high-end American style hotels. But don't touch the food, even for breakfast.

Also, make sure you reserve a four-wheel drive well in advance (often sold out) and visit lots of really great restaurants on the island that were 1/2 to 1/3 the price (the price was the icing on the cake). The Wyndham had inedible and expensive food. You will need transportation anyway to get to the good beaches.

It was a great spa location. The beaches were nice until we found out just how great the beaches on the south and west end of the island were. You'll never go to a Wyndham beach again.

The staff was very friendly, and seemed to try hard, but we didn't get service commensurate with the prices. Pay top dollar and you expect more.

Bottom line - you can't go wrong here (unless you eat here!).

5.0 stars We rate it "A plus plus"! Visited: September 2004

My wife and I recently came here to celebrate our first wedding anniversary and I don't have the words to describe how wonderful our trip was.

The resort and the island were just too beautiful. After visiting Vieques, San Juan beaches didn't interest us. It was very relaxing and the service was just superb. The crew was very attentive and they did a great job in spoling us.

We took a small plane to Vieques (MN Aviation) which was a great thing to do since it took only 20 minutes from San Juan (compared to the ferry which took one hour from Fajardo and it took 45 minutes from San Juan to Fajardo). We took some munchies with us which came really handy.

Food was pretty expensive ($26 - $40 for an entree), but it tasted great and the presentation was awesome. There was a grill by the pool and they had burgers and stuff there. In room service was pretty pricy as well. There were a few restaurants outside the resort for which we had to use a cab or rent a car, but we decided to stay in the resort.

Don't forget to use their massage services. They had a variety of massages available. The jaccuzi, sauna, and steam room areas were very clean and very well maintained. Swimming gear (tubes, snorkeling gear, etc., etc.) was available for rent at pretty reasonable rates and one can snorkel right by the shore since fishes come there.

The beach did not get crowded and felt very seclusive. From the beach we could see the main island of Puerto Rico and the island of Culebra. Also, try to reserve an oceanview room. You'll be glad you paid extra money for it. It's definitely worth it.

Usually people get tired when they go on vacation, and after traveling to different parts of the world, this place really helped us relax. And this was the first time I can say that I went on 'vacation'. I am already looking forward to going back to Vieques and staying at Wyndham at Martineau Bay.

I'd like to know what the reviewer from Maryland thinks the Wyndham can do about the ocean water being cold or rough?

Actually, the beach is separated by an outcropping of rocks creating two beaches - one with water toys and umbrellas and chairs, and the other a bit quieter (also with umbrellas and chairs).

We found the resort to be very nice. Randy was an excellent lobby bar bartender.

Vieques IMHO currently has very few - dare I say - "high end" places, but many moderate places. We hung out and ate at the local places (you have to try the "street food"), but we slept in one of the nicer places.

5.0 stars Wyndham was off the beaten path, and a beautiful and romantic resort Visited: May 2004

The past few months I have been working on a wedding at the Wyndham Martineau Bay Resort and Spa in Vieques and I have just returned after spending four days there.

The Wyndham's layout, style and decor were gorgeous. They had a beautiful pool, spacious rooms with light and airy decor, a full service spa, two restaurants and three private beaches on property. The tiles, china and accents in the rooms and the restaurants were all imported from Italy and Mexico.

The service was on "Caribbean time". The staff bent over backwards for us, but some of the staff members were still learning and the hotel was still hiring.

One person who stood out was Claudia Aguas, the Food and Beverage Director (and also the Wedding Coordinator). I cannot say enough good things about Claudia. Her responsiveness and her willingness to work with my bride and groom to meet their expectations and even exceed them was incredible.

Vieques was situated about eight miles off the coast of mainland Puerto Rico and it was a really quaint island-very laid back. The US Navy's former presence was completely unnoticeable at this time. Everything has been cleaned up and the few hundred acres where Naval 'equipment' remained, was completely closed off to unauthorized persons and was located on the opposite end of the island, away from the Martineau Bay Hotel.

The BioLuminescent Bay tour is not to be missed-swimming in the Caribbean while millions of plankton glow around, all over and beneath us was quite a unique experience! Island Adventures was the best.

Jeeps, SUVs and mopeds were easy to rent through Hilda, the hotel concierge.

1.0 stars What a disappointment! Visited: March 2004

We thought this hotel was totally lacking in charm. It was based on a cookie cutter plan with three stories of rooms ringing the noisy pool. It might as well have been located at the Miami airport.

The very small beach was located on the Atlantic side of the island with cold water, rough waves and no shade. The rooms were a nice size, but nothing special. They had very limited drawer space and dim 40W reading lamps bedside.

An effort was made on the bathrooms, with elegant tile, but the room layout was odd. With the tub located in the middle of the room, separated from the bed only by a matchstick shade and the shower completely lacking a door, even the most romantic couple would have considered it lacking in privacy.

Upon checking in, we were bowled over by the bleach smell in our top floor room. Other family members were in ground-floor rooms where the mold smell was overwhelming and ever present. At check-in, the bellman automatically brought an air freshener spray which lasted about a minute and then the moldy smell was back.

The manager said they had a chronic problem with mold in those rooms. Turn down service was a joke. For some reason, on two nights out of seven, our bed was turned down. The other nights, no one showed up to do the service. When they did show up, the turn down people would leave the dirty towels on the front porch, where they stayed until the next day. Some days the rooms weren't cleaned until after 1:00 pm.

Now, let me get to what we thought was the most inexcusable part of the entire story -- the food. It was the most awful food we have ever eaten, anywhere. At breakfast, it took 45 minutes to get a cup of coffee. Often I would get the pot from the wait stand and serve my family, but some days, there was no coffee there either.

Just to order, took about a half hour and then it took another half hour or more to get food, basic bacon and eggs. Overall, breakfast usually took a ridiculous two hours. The food itself was inexcusable, the oatmeal watery, the eggs dry and crumbly. The croissants were pale grey and gelatinous.

Dinner was equally disappointing. No local fish or produce was in evidence. The fish that was served was dry and tasetelss. While the service people were friendly, they didn't display any urgency in getting food and drinks to the table.

The food at the pool grill was faster, but limited to burgers and fries type offerings and the cooking grease filled the air poolside. We ate out as many meals as possible and had some good food then, but hated the fact that we had to drive long distances for food after paying such high rates at the Wyndham.

My recommendation is to stay away. I think you will be disappointed and why do you need that on vacation?

4.0 stars This was a very nice (and new) resort. Visited: November 2003

I stayed here for ten days in November 2003. It was a very nice resort with beautiful grounds. The provided very nice rooms with deep bathtubs. There were two nice swimming beaches, and all the employees seemed happy to please and wanted to get it right.

My only negative point was that the food preperation was not as good as it should be. Hopefully, in time they will work out. All in all, it was a wonderful resort

The hotel was very nice - new and clean. Also, the staff was very nice, but not up to par as to what vacationers would like.

Also, there was no "by request" offered. Food was at their mercy (when they were serving), and it was very expensive.

In addition, you had to have a car to get around anywhere.

This was, without a doubt, one of the more beautiful islands I have been to. The resort was just great, and the staff was very professional and attentive. I will go back soon.

I stayed for a long weekend in Vieques just two weeks after the Navy left the island. The island is a totally undeveloped and undiscovered pearl of the Caribbean.

The Resort is placed on the north coast and is totally new, just opened in February 2003. The rooms are beautiful and the staff is great, very attentive.

During my stay, some of the services were not on service yet, like the room service or the spa, but the staff did all the best to match our needs. There are two wonderful beaches on the property and others to discover on the island. Rent a car - it's definitely a need if you want to discover the island.
