5.0 stars We loved staying at El Caranio by the Sea! Visited: November 2002

I found this resort on the internet, and after reading the reviews I was not sure about staying here. We did not want to spend the higher rates elsewhere, so we decided to give it a try.

Contrary to a few of the reviews, we found the room to be clean, a/c was cold, the shower was fantastic, and the staff was very friendly. The breakfast was wonderful, and the walk to the beach was exactly 10 steps! This was a true bargain.

There were lots of good places to eat very close by, as well. My praises to Linda (and the staff), as she was most helpful when I called her to book the room. Try to find that in a big tourist city! Thanks again, we will defintely be back!

3.0 stars An affordable, convenient accommodation. Visited: May 2002

We stayed at the hotel for one night on our way to St. Thomas. For the price, the hotel was a good deal.

The room was clean, and the air conditioning was reliable. The shower and location of electrical outlets could be improved. However, if one was only using the hotel for sleeping and a simple continental breakfast, it was a really good deal.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The beach was just a few steps away. Walgreens and lots of restaurants were very close (a block or two, if I recall correctly).

It was certainly not a luxury hotel, but I think it was very affordable and reasonable for travelers on a budget.

5.0 stars Nothing fancy, but it was clean, comfortable and affordable. Visited: May 2002

For a small, budget hotel, I was very impressed.

My room was both clean and comfortable. There were no bugs as mentioned in a previous post. The windows were clean, albeit there was no view. But it was no matter to me; I was at beach just steps from hotel most of day. At night, I was out dining and enjoying nightlife and casinos.

I'd recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stretch their vacation dollar. The free breakfast (pastries, fruits and cereals) were fresh and, along with the Puerto Rican coffee, got me up and out each morning.

For me, the money I saved in lodging, I spent on fine dining, shopping and the slots nearby. Sure, wish I had won that jackpot, but there's always the next time.

I'm already planning my return in September. I've booked my return at El Canario by the Sea and look forward to seeing the friendly staff. They helped make my visit an enjoyable one. I feel like part of the family now.

1.0 stars You can do better.... Visited: March 2002

We stayed here one day before our cruise on RCCL. We were not impressed. My husband discovered a roach in the bathroom during the night; I discovered one the next morning heading under a very outdated couch and bed. We left very early for the pier due to bugs. The a/c was VERY loud and unreliable.

The area around the hotel is filthy. The windows in our room appeared to have not been cleaned for quite awhile. I drank their coffee in the morning but wouldn't touch their food. I waited until I got on board.

4.0 stars Pleasant accommodations, great location. Visited: November 2001

I have stayed at all of the El Canario resorts, but this location is the best. It isn’t a top-of-the-line hotel, but for the price, it is in an excellent location. It’s great for people who only use the hotel to sleep. There’s a pleasant staff that makes you become a native in parking the car, and provides an ideal starting point for any evening. Nice beach area although not Luquillo. This hotel allows the one-week vacation to become a two-week trip due to the savings.

We stayed here for a few days before our cruise. I love that you could walk to the beach with no hassle. The rooms are cozy, neat and very clean. The outdoor patio is a wonderful spot to relax after a long day of sightseeing or shopping.

This is a great place to stay at such an affordable price. The staff was very friendly and always able to assist in all our needs. Will definitely return!

This is my second visit to this hotel in less than a year! I just love this cozy little hotel and especially Matilda the Front Desk Clerk.

2.0 stars Recommend for students on a budget. Visited: March 2001

Canario by the Sea was disappointing at first, but I got used to it after awhile. Parking was horrible and the Puerto Rican and American coffee was horrible, too. The staff wasn't very informative; I asked directions to Isla Verde and they had no clue. The hotels nearby appeared to be abandoned.

This hotel was clean, but a bit run down for the price. There were no small towels when I arrived, but I did get them the next morning. Water pressure
was nonexistant. I recommend it for students on a budget. You could rent beach chairs at a low price of $3 a day.

5.0 stars A small gem among the high rise giants. Visited: March 2001

If you’re looking for a clean, safe, cheap hotel right next to the beach, but don't want to
break the bank go to the El Canario by the Sea. After researching the Internet for a place
to stay a few days before our cruise, we settled on staying here. It is very basic, yet has a
rustic charm. It is literally 10 steps from a great beach, it's in a safe area, the staff
(especially Matilda) is wonderful. Why pay $300 dollars a night to stay in a high rise hotel,
when everything is right there ( 24 hour Walgreens, restaurants, Marriott with casino)
within walking distance. You can leave your luggage in the lobby, and your valuables
behind the desk with the clerk, while you enjoy the beach if you arrive early. We'll stay
there the next time we cruise from San Juan. Do it! It's a great bargain!

2.0 stars An okay place for a short time. Visited: March 2001

We just spent three nights at Canario. It was okay, clean and close to a lot of things. The only complaints we had were that the air-conditioning was very noisy and you couldn’t open the windows, but there wasn’t a view from our room anyway.

The water pressure in the shower was terrible, so forget it if you have a lot of hair; you would never get the soap out. The beds were hard. The continental breakfast was nothing you would want. There was no milk for coffee or powdered creamer.

The pictures of the hotel look good, but it's not like that. If you rent a car, there is no place to park on the street and we had to go to the Marriott and pay $12 a night.

This little hotel is a wonderful place to stay - and affordable too.

I had a wonderful time in Puerto Rico because the desk clerk was able to help us throughout our trip. They were especially helpful when I lost my wallet.

The room was small but very clean and cozy. I recommend staying at this hotel.

3.0 stars Excellent Location Visited: February 2001

After a few days of extensive research on the web, I decided to book a room at El Canario by the Sea. Most of the web sites I visited to research E.C.B.T.S. only had photos of the front of the hotel (would have liked to view the different types of rooms on the Net). I was prepared for everything except the room decor - it was plain, but very clean.

The location was excellent; close to the ocean, gambling, public transportation (bus system was cheap and safe), and restaurants. I definitely recommend this hotel to others on a budget!

3.0 stars Clean, Affordable & Very Close to the Beach Visited: January 2001

My husband and I just returned from PR and our stay at El Canario was very pleasant. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was a bit small but clean and with all the necessities (air-conditioning, cable tv & phone). The room service was efficient and thorough.

If you are looking for a place that is not too expensive and that is walking distance to all in the center of the Condado area, this place is for you. The beach is literally around the building and all restaurants and casinos are also in walking distance. They provide a lovely breakfast in the morning for all guests. We both highly recommend it. We had a wonderful stay.

2.0 stars Clean but VERY basic. Visited: December 2000

This was a clean place to stay in an excellent location. It is very basic, no shampoo, hairdryer, tissues, etc. If you want an ashtray or remote for your television you have to go downstairs to the office and return them upon departure. The air conditioning was noisy, but if you didn't have it on you could hear all the other televisions and people talking in the next room. Our toilet paper holder in the bathroom was about 12 inches off the floor so was quite a reach down. Gotta wonder what that installer was thinking. Locks on the door also seemed very basic. It wouldn't take much to break in. I would never stay there again, but if clean and cheap is what you're looking for, check it out.

3.0 stars A great location in Condado Visited: December 2000
Posted by DacksJones
It isn't a 5-star hotel, but my stay was pleasurable. You probably won't spend much time in the room because the beach is only 10 yards away. The hotel is located in the heart of Condado and conveniently located near restaurants and shops. Take a chance, you won't be disappointed.

2.0 stars Budget Gourmet Visited: December 2000

This place was safe, 3 seconds from the sand and water, across the street from the hotel/casino, close walk to most of the restaurants and about 1.5 miles from the touristy old San Juan. We swam and went to all the other resorts without problem and spent much less. College budget delight!

This 25-room hotel was a nice and is a great place to stay. It’s an ideal place for a couple and students.

I came here with my boyfriend and we loved it. It was so close to everything, sure maybe not five-star, but clean with friendly people and staff, especially Matilda and Chris!

Stay here, it is great. I would stay there again anytime!

5.0 stars Best deal for the buck. Visited: December 1969

If you are looking for an inexpensive place to sleep, while seeing the island this is the place for you. Why pay $250 a night to sleep somewhere else when you can pay around $80.(offseason) You can still visit all of the other hotels, play in their casinos and dance in their bars for free! The staff were very nice and helpful, and I would reccomend this hotel to anyone that wants to stay 50 feet from the ocean at a reasonable price.
