No 4-star hotel Visited: February 2005

If I was a hippie and back in the sixties I might of liked the place. The so called art is too much. Every square inch of wall is covered with no taught to it. Poor service, cheap breakfast, no TV, not very clean room, 20 sec of hot water. This was the honeymoon sweet the most expensive they had. Only stayed there because my original booking at another hotel was bumped and couldn't find a room at any other hotel. Next time I will bring a sleeping bag.

PS Most cab drivers never heard of the place and that tells you a lot.

Perhaps only an artist can appreciate this! Visited: April 2002

Both my friend and I thought this place was delightful. It was very Bohemian!

The staff was a joy - very friendly. It was in a wonderful location. It was like staying in someone's home (and it is!).

A great location and full of character. Visited: March 2002

We enjoyed a delightful three-night stay at the Gallery Inn. The location was ideal for seeing Old San Juan on foot.

The Inn was loaded with character and surprises. It was located at the highest point of Old San Juan, and the panoramic view from the rooftop was incredible.

They offered a delightful continental breakfast of fresh fruit, fresh rolls, fresh squeezed juice and delicious coffee. Also, the owners were very personable.

The rooms were each unique - furnished with antiques. The least expensive rooms were a bit tight, but they were kind enough to upgrade us to a larger room for no extra cost.

The courtyards were lovely, and the birds (5 parrots, 2 cockatoos) and the dog were entertaining. The staff was also very nice.

Great location, but overall disappointing Visited: February 2001

First the good news: the location can't be beat and exploring Old San Juan by foot is a must when staying at the Gallery Inn.

However, we were quite disappointed by the hotel itself. We booked one of the two budget rooms ($145 is considered budget these days...) and got a room down in the interior of the building with no window or sunlight. Accordingly, the ventilation was inadequate and despite working air-conditioning the room was smelly. The room was cramped, the furnishings well worn, and the room could have used a thorough cleaning.

While the hotel can definitely be called unique, you will need to be fond of clutter (I guess some people would call it antiques) and animals (several parrots, a dog and at least two cats); be prepared for amimal smells, too. On the plus side, there were no animal noises at night.

During our stay, we peeked into some of the more expensive rooms and they seemed to be nicer (and have windows) but they were also considerably more expensive.

And, don't expect much from the free breakfast, either.

We will probably not book the Gallery Inn again if we go back to San Juan.

Good location, but that's about it. Visited: December 2000

We stayed one night at this hotel and we had a tiny room on the second floor with no windows and no light - talk about feeling claustrophobic! The bed was most uncomfortable and the bed linens did not feel fresh. Also, the door in our room could not be locked. When we went out, we had to keep our valuables in locked suitcases. Even though the hotel keeps its front gate locked at all times, I felt very uneasy sleeping in this guestroom!

At first glance, this hotel may look eclectic, but after a while it all starts to look like overpriced dusty clutter. We would not stay at this hotel again and don't really recommend it either.

Loved this unique setting. Visited: September 2000

If your looking for a hotel with character then The Gallery Inn is for you. I stayed three
nights and loved it. Initially, I was given a basement room, which was dark, but had very
interesting decor. When I mentioned to the owner that I was sorry I couldn't afford one of
the upper rooms, she immediately had me moved to a great room upstairs with a teeny
balcony and spectacular view of the water! I enjoyed going from room to room checking
out the unique decor and the owners couldn't be nicer. If you need flashy
accommodations, pools and room service, then this is not the place for you. I wouldn't
recommend bringing kids here either unless they're really well behaved because of all the
narrow hallways, artwork and knickknacks around.

This place is funky and weird and totally delightful. Not a "mass-produced" vibe in the
place. It’s also in a great location to begin your tour of Old San Juan; I walked
everywhere. I'd love to go back and stay at the Gallery Inn once again. I just can't decide
which room I'd like the next time around!

Gallery Inn Overview

Out of the way, but in the middle of humming Old San Juan, The Gallery Inn is as its name states, an art gallery. Chuck full of fascinating sculpture, pottery, paintings of all kinds, antiques, books, and a profusion of tropical plants, this charming inn of only 22...
