This was an amazing inn. Visited: October 2006

We had the pleasure of spending three nights here last October - and it was incredible!

The staff was friendly, courteous and efficient. They went out of their way to make sure our honeymoon was amazing.

The rooms were heavenly. They were beyond comfortable - nothing like lying in bed looking out our front door at the ocean!

They also had a fantastic pool, great food, and the beach at our doorstep. We're counting the days until we return!

This was a lovely place on beautiful water. Visited: January 2006

We recently returned home after a wonderful stay at the Blue Horizon. The room was perfectly appointed, and the weather was great.

We visited a beach a day. The sand was white and the water was blue (and not cold). It was refreshing. The restaurant at the inn was delicious, and Alex, the bartender, made the rum drinks just like we love them.

The owners were kind, and told us that very soon the kitchen will expand the menu and service. We liked the location - just outside of town.

Don't miss the Biobay trip, and do jump off the boat for the "fireworks". We used Island Adventures, and they were good. Tradwinds Restaurant, Island Steak House and Bili's were the "not to miss" restaurants. Red and Blue beaches were beautiful.

This hotel had poor management and inhospitable service. Visited: December 2005
Posted by cfpagano
We stayed at the Inn between Christmas 2005 and New Year's. We had high hopes for the Inn based on all the positive press, but it was unfortunately a big disappointment.

While the setting was lovely with a great view of the Caribbean, we could not enjoy the time spent at the Inn because the management was so poor. It was not at all the relaxing vacation we had hoped for.

The Inn's web site indicated the restaurant would re-open after renovations in mid-December. We confirmed this by phone in mid-December, and our reservations for the restaurant were accepted. When we arrived, we learned that the restaurant would be closed for the entire duration of our stay. In addition, the bar was closed for renovations as well - and we had no advance notice of this either.

This "full-service" inn was no more than a B&B, and breakfast was slow and mediocre (and not included in the price of the room). The management and the owner seemed unapologetic, and repeatedly demanded to know who told us on the phone that the restaurant would be open, as if we were lying.

The Inn also threw a New Year's Eve party that the guests were charged $175 each to attend (down from the original proposed $250 pp). If everything had been spectacular up until then, we might have considered attending, although the price seemed exorbitant for guests who were already spending over $300 a night to stay here. We were thrilled we had made other plans for the evening - especially once we heard advertisements inviting the locals for only $40 per person to attend.

If you have made your reservations already, switch. It will save you a lot of frustration- and money. Just go for drinks (but call first!), if you are that compelled by the web site to see the grounds. You will have a far more relaxing and hospitable experience if you stay somewhere- anywhere- else.

We found the manager to be rude, and the receptionist uniformed. Visited: October 2005

I planned my vacation on Vieques around my stay at The Inn. I checked in, and was on my way to my room when I learned that the kitchen had a fire. So there was no food, no bar, and I was isolated.

The receptionist said that he had told me that the restaurant wasn't open and that I needed a car. He didn't. Why would I make that up?

The next day, I called the manager and was told that "everyone knows that the restaurant is closed. Didn't you check the website?" The manager refused to return my deposit - even though I didn't stay here. I was told to "dispute this with your credit card".

I think James Weis should know how his people run his hotel - or is he too busy?

Inn on the Blue Horizin is a great, quiet getaway. Visited: November 2004

This was the type of place you go to be alone. It was totally laid back (where else do you pour your own drinks and pay with an honor system?).

The front desk ladies were more than helpful with arranging cars and tours. They had beautiful rooms, everyone was very friendly, and we picked up exactly 536 pieces of sea glass on their shores over three days. And even though it rained every hour on the hour, the sun seemed to pop through enough for us to come home tan.

If you are an anti-resort kind of person, this place is for you. The food was great, but I wouldn't eat there every night. Five minutes down the road were a couple of places that were 30 percent cheaper and just as good (albeit not as fancy). Rent a jeep and explore Vieques....it was worth a peek - especially Red Beach. Oh yeah, and don't miss the Bioluminescent Bay.

Casual cool and relaxed with excellent eats. Visited: November 2003

I stayed seven nights November 2003. This was during one of the highest amounts of rain ever in Puerto Rico. This resort was wonderful. The pool area very nice, and the food was excellent. Also, all the employees were very pleasant and caring. We will return.

I would recommend Blue Horizon without hesitation. Visited: April 2002

The Inn was the best hotel we stayed at on our two-week trip around Puerto Rico, including stops at the Horned Dorset, Copamarina, El Convento, and San Juan Marriott.

We enjoyed some of these other hotels, but the Inn stood above the rest for its very comfortable rooms, common areas, food, bar, atmosphere, and low-key but helpful service.

The entire place was decorated with care over time by the owners as if it was their own home. It clearly reflected their creativity, attention to detail, and appreciation for style and comfort.

Chef Michael's restaurant rivaled anywhere in San Juan, if not Chicago, and the bar was great. The Inn was also a long walk/short drive to Esperanza, which had a handful of perfectly enjoyable and less pricely restaurants.

As an aside, do not let the media reports of U.S. Navy protests on the island discourage you from visiting Vieques. This was our second visit to the island and the protests were practically invisible and did not detract from the beauty of the island or its wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

Absolutely the best of Puerto Rico. Visited: June 2001

The Inn on the Blue Horizon defies a specific time and place. It was definitely created by the hands of an artist and the soul of a poet. It is a connecting point between modern living and a time long gone where simplicity was the rule. It evokes the times of a truly laidback Caribbean.

The place is as if taken from a movie or a different era. The atmosphere is filled with friendliness from the staff and the visitors. No one gets in the way, yet everyone is ready to help to make the experience an unforgettable one. The emphasis is on comfort and simplicity. There is only one phone and no TV; yet neither is missed. The Inn is close to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean and a quiet small town in Vieques.

Very few places achieve what they achieve, namely to make you feel as if you are at a friend’s house visiting for a few days. The details of the Inn reflect the good taste and artistry of the owner. The decoration, paintings and furniture, as well as the choice of color all go well and create a predominantly Caribbean-style home, with high ceilings and open spaces where the breeze can easily flow from place to place.

The Inn does not even try to compete with the greater surroundings of a Caribbean island. Instead, it becomes part of the environment by using the textures, colors, and fabrics of the Caribbean. It works within the context of a truly modest and exceptionally relaxed place. This allows for the environment and all it has to offer to be appreciated in greater detail.

The rooms are also all well decorated and furnished with antiques. They are comfortable and private, since each is basically a small villa. At night, the place is surrounded by the sounds of coquies all singing against the crashing waves of the ocean creating a serene and pleasing atmosphere. The pool is outside in the mist of plants, palm trees and lawns, and it allows for a perfect, breathtaking view of the ocean.

It would be unusual not to feel compelled to either write, paint, compose or engage in some sort of creative activity since the entire place is inspiring.

Best meals I have had this side of the Atlantic. Visited: November 1999
Posted by ATraveler
We were looking for a good place for dinner on the south side of Vieques on Saturday night and we found the Blu Cafe. The meal was not cheap, about $70 dollars a head with wine, but the range of textures and flavours was superb. When we went back for dinner the next night the meal was equally good. We were disappointed to find that the restarant was not open on Monday night.

Stunning beauty, very relaxing Visited: November 1999

Just the drive up to the Inn (approaching the sea) took my breath away. My girlfriend and I discovered the Inn on the Blue Horizon quite by accident; it turned out to be the best part of our vacation in Puerto Rico.

With a beautiful location, amazing charm (every detail seemed carefully planned), great food and very friendly staff, I look forward to our next stay here.

Great beaches & nice rooms Visited: November 1999
Posted by microsafe
We stayed off-season for 4-days as a distraction to a business trip on the mainland.

The rooms were spacious and well appointed, but lacked air-conditioning. As we understood there was only one room with air and it was attached to the main house.

The café was nice for breakfast and lunch, and reasonably priced. We found dinner a bit pricey. The meal, drinks and wine ran up to $200 U.S. or so. The food was ok, but not worth that price. We found most restaurants on the island a bit lacking and also over priced.

Vieques offered some amazing beaches, mostly on the army base. As you went deeper into the base the beaches got nicer and more secluded. The base was not more than 20 minutes from the Inn.

It was a nice trip, I’d return just for the beaches!

This is an excellent place to relax Visited: November 1999

I was working in nearby Fajardo, Puerto Rico for about 6 months and stayed in many resorts and hotels here. When my wife came to visit, we took the two dollar ferry ride from Fajardo to Vieques and stayed at the Inn on the Blue Horizon.

We both loved everything about the place. The view, the beach combing. It was like owning your own piece of an island. Our dinner and drinks ran around $100.00 and was worth every penny.

If you want a relaxing, hassle-free place to explore, this island and this place is it.
