2.0 stars It was not so wonderful. Visited: July 2009
Posted by locojax
My husband and I just returned from staying here for four days.

We were checked into a room with broken air conditioning. The front desk quickly placed us in a new room. The only problem was that they gave us a room already in use. We used the key and opened the door to walk in on other guest.

So, back to the front lobby and this time we got a good room. It was large and mostly clean.

The hotel was at full capacity. I had anticipated a quiet relaxing trip. Instead, there were mobs of kids running the halls. At 10 pm they rode the elevator up and down screaming and banging on doors. At midnight, we were fed up. The front desk said they had received numerous complaints and were sending security. It did finally stop.

We were able to hear the neighbors through the walls. Since we were placed next to a room with an infant, we could hear the off and on crying.

In the morning we had no water at all. There was none coming out of the sink or shower. We were told it was because of the high capacity of people. This meant showering at night, or late afternoon. I would also have let the water run before using it. The water would come out brown and then turn over to clear. We used bottle water to brush our teeth.

We did eat at the two restaurants. I would rate them as average, and not worth the $100 each we spent.

You must get a rental car. It was so much cheaper, and the $20 per day cost was well worth it.

I would not stay at this hotel again. Although, I don't plan on visiting Puerto Rico again, either.

2.0 stars I was very disappointed. Visited: April 2009

I stayed at the Rio Mar for a week. The staff was very unorganized and slow. Be careful if you are going to use their transportation. They use a third party transportation service, and the staff will tell you one amount the driver will tell you another. I would ask the driver how much you are going to pay before getting into the vehicle.

I went to the Rio Mar for a wedding. We had 43 people at the wedding and the Rio Mar set up only 16 chairs. We had to wait 30 minutes to get enough chairs. Like I said earlier, very slow.

The management was not willing to help out us with our issues. They actually sided with the other party or employees. I am very disappointed with the Rio Mar, and will never stay at a Wyndham resort ever again.

3.0 stars It was nice, but beware! Visited: March 2009
Posted by ljherring
We paid for the hotel through Priceline upfront. On checking out, we were surprised to find a "resort fee" of 14% on our bill. When we questioned the manager, she said that they can add whatever they want to the bill -- incredible!

We ate poolside once. It was $41 for the two of us! We didn't eat in the other restaurants, but we checked out the menus and they looked way overpriced as well.

We took our rental car and ate outside the complex. The downside to the rental car was the parking fee. It was $20/day, but you absolutely need one. Otherwise, you would spend an enormous amount of money on food, and there really wasn't much to do at the resort.

It is unfortunate this resort had to "hide" their fees and had over-priced food, as I really thought the hotel and its location on the beach were very nice.

1.0 stars I believe my credit card information was stolen while I was here. Visited: December 2008
Posted by lmf319
I got back home to find out after having a hold placed on my credit card for two rooms and supposedly removed when I checked out, that someone was trying to use my information while I was there. They tried placing a $200 and a $75 charge for a timeshare to my card.

The credit card company notified me, and this caused me lots of stress two days before Christmas. My card had to be canceled - and they still tryed to use it afterward!

I will never ever recommend this place to my worst enemy!

1.0 stars This place is not suitable for handicapped people. Visited: December 2008
Posted by lmf319
We just got back from this resort. My husband and I had a great room. However, the handicapped accessible room for my mother was horrible! She could barely get her electric wheel chair into the room, which left no room to walk. She could not even turn the chair around in the room.

If it weren't for the bell hop moving a piece of furniture forward (just barely enough room (inches), her chair would have blocked her way to the bathroom. I guess because they put a peep hole at wheel chair level, this qualified it for the handicap seal. I don't suggest you stay here if you or someone in your party is handicapped.

4.0 stars We had a very pleasant and relaxing week in this villa. Visited: January 2008
Posted by keith_co83
It was well located, about three minutes from the Golf Club, and seven minutes from the Ocean Villas and the Resort Center, with pools, restaurants, exercise facility, etc. Guests travel by golf cart from the villas to these facilities, which is a great way to get around the resort.

A rental car is useful only if one wants to spend a lot of time away from the resort. The same car service that picks up at the airport will take you to dinner, tours, and other places. They are very nice people, too.

We went to El Conquistador for dinner one night, and the total transportation bill was, with a generous tip, $35 per couple.

The villa aspect was wonderful for the extra space, split cost, etc., but they are approaching the "tired" stage and need new mattresses and linens.

Also, the usual typed, in-plastic information about the villa would be useful (e.g., we had no hot water for the first 1.5 days, and it turned out that what looked like a wall switch for a light in the kitchen actually turned on the hot water heat-er)!

Ditto, the usual instructions for the TV would be useful--which station the TV itself should be tuned to, use the TV remote only to turn on and off and the cable remote for everything else.

We found a perfectly adequate older IBM computer, with direct access to hi-speed internet. It was very useful to confirm flights an things. However, if I had not happened to notice it under the TV and wondered if it worked, we would not have been able to check e-mail, etc. Ergo, the suggestion for written info.

The people managing the villas were very responsive, and very nice about any problems.

Overall, the combo of "Where to Stay" and the local people for transportation and management made it very easy to arrange a relaxing vacation. Thanks due to Andrew, Shawna, Alfred, and Marco for their excellent help.

The only down part was the wet condition of the two golf courses. They were very nice courses, but they had had considerable rain, and most days it was "cart path" only for carts, so 5-hour+ rounds were not unusual.

I look forward to playing them again sometime under better conditions!

4.0 stars This was a great resort - and beautiful. Visited: October 2007

My husband and I stayed at the Rio Mar for his birthday, and we loved it.

The room was beautiful, modern and clean. The pool area was so much fun. We were able to order drinks and food while sunbathing. Also, the staff was great.

The only con was the lack of traditional Puerto Rican food. The food was okay, but we were looking forward to eating great Spanish food, and we had to go outside the resort for meals. The food at the resort was very expensive, and not enough for what you pay. We found it best to eat meals outside the resort and order snacks and drinks only.

5.0 stars Rio Mar was outstanding. Visited: August 2007

My family and I just returned a few days ago from the Wyndham Rio Mar Hotel. It was magnificent - the weather, the property, the entire experience.

We love Puerto Rico, and will return over and over again! I do not understand some of the negative feedback. I think expectations and attitude play a big part!

Folks, this property is beautiful, and Wyndham has added some really nice touches since taking over! The amenities are top notch, the grounds are meticulous, and the staff is friendly and courteous. What are you waiting for?

This was my third visit to Puerto Rico. My girlfriend is from the island, and her parents live here. I have the advantage of learning about the resort through relatives, and it was the best we have had.

We left the resort (via rental car) for food and refreshments, but enjoyed the entertainment several nights at the resort. To experience Puerto Rico, you have to visit numerous places on the island. It is only through this experience that you will truly come to enjoy Puerto Rico as I have - nightlife in San Juan, shopping at the market, eating at small (but very good) mom and pop restaurants, visiting the rain forest, the casinos, clubs, and excellent beaches. These are only a few of the things you will come to enjoy.

Whether you have small children, are honeymooning or visit by yourself, this is one of many places to enjoy - and it is truly excellent.

I had an awesome time here. The staff was so kind and helpful.

The beach and pool were only a few steps away. It was one of the best resorts I have stayed in.

4.0 stars It was perfect, and we had small children with us! Visited: December 2006

I cannot fault this hotel in any way. It was beautifully furnished, clean and had easy access to the beach and pools. The had great facilities within a few minutes' walk, and the staff was friendly and helpful.

We had a toddler and a four-month-old with us, and everything was conveniently close by. The food was excellent with good sized portions.

Our room backed on to the front of the hotel where an iguana pond was. This was a source of great amusement to our two-and-a-half- year-old.

We enjoyed staying here more than we did at the other two hotels we stayed at during our stay on Puerto Rico. It was absolutely lovely!

We stayed here twice in August 2006, and had a wonderful time. Because it was off season, we were given a free room upgrade for the second stay.

The staff was exceptionally attentive and gracious, and our rooms were lovely. Our son loved the pool and the facilities. We found the food costly, except for the kids meals - but there were some excellent and very affordable restaurants near by.

Overall, we highly recommend it and hope to stay at the Westin Rio Mar again.

1.0 stars I hated this hotel. Visited: October 2005

We stayed here a couple of weeks ago. What a nightmare we had here!

First off, it took 30 minutes for us to check in. The staff seemed to disappear behind this closed door for at least ten minutes at a time, and only came back to give us some type of bad news.

Also, this hotel advertised that they had 11 restaurants, yet only one or two were open each night. Marbella was open every night, but it was so expensive and the food was sub par.

I got engaged during this trip and we were on cloud 9. After dealing with the staff at this hotel, we were down in the dumps.

My fiance called the front desk to ask where else we could eat since our options were very limited. They hung up on her! She called back, and they hung up again and again. Finally, we exploded to management and somehow got 50% taken off our bill.

There is never any excuse for the staff to treat the guests as if they are unwelcome, especially since we are the ones paying their salary.

This hotel failed to advertise that virtually all of their restaurants would be closed. This is advertising fraud at its worst because the hotel is being dishonest with its guests. They charged us $70 for parking, and we didn't even have a car.

Also, there was nothing even close to this hotel worth doing. It was in the boonies.

The good news was - we checked out after only a few days and hopped a plane to Aruba where we were able to salvage what was left of our vacation.

We just stayed for a four-day weekend, and my, what a pleasure! The staff was gracious, friendly and upbeat.

The food was awesome, especially at The Grille Room. This restaurant was definitely a "cut above the rest". It was a bit pricy, but it was to be expected since the cuisine was phenomenal and the service was five-star.

The beach was postcard beautiful, and the weather really cooperated for us. I have told so many of my friends about this trip that they are currently making plans to visit, too!

This place is highly recommended. We thought it was much better than El Conquistador. Rio Mar Beach rules!

We changed our plans due to Hurricane Charley from Florida to Puerto Rico very abruptly. We had no idea where this place was(Rio Grande?). We just read about it online and looked at the pictures. It turned out to be outstanding.

The grounds were spectacular. The staff was available and helpful with all of our particular needs (a small mix-up with booking was quickly resolved and with no inconvenience). Service was excellent in the restaurants and poolside. Food was very good (a little pricy, but to be expected).

You can take a trip to the rainforest or somewhere else, or you can just go play golf or go to the casino. You can also use shuttle or car rental. At the resort, they had lots of activities for the kids and a very capable staff to watch and engage the kids in many aspects.

But the main thing was, that it was as nice as it looked in the pictures and the weather was great. We would highly recommend a stay here.

4.0 stars We enjoyed the mile-long sandy clean beach and clear blue water. Visited: July 2004
Posted by mkalm
We just spend our 4th of July weekend here. It was my first stay in the hotel, but I have stayed in about six or seven different hotels in Puerto Rico during the last five years for both business and vacations.

They have a beautiful property, with clean rooms, and a great beach. The prices for food and recreation were a little high, but not out of line with other resorts of the same class.

The place was very busy and probably had as many kids as adults, but since they mostly stayed in the pools, the beach wasn’t crowded at all – and beach was our reason for the visit.

The main restaurant was buffet primarily, and it was very busy. It was okay. The Italian place for dinner was very good, but quite expensive.

2.0 stars bad place with bad management Visited: February 2004
Posted by ghadayale
I visited with my husband and 9 months old son. The room was extremely noisy and very close to the elevator where kids are screaming and playing. The first day, I had my back pack stollen from the bell man desk. I had my drivers liscence passport and all the documents required for my return. We filed a police report. We waited and waited,we got nothing back. The third day I had a baby sitter watch my son while we went snorkling. She ate almost everything in the mini bar and watched 2 movies! When we spoke with the management, they would not refund. I also had my sunglasses and other valuables stolen from the room. I counted all of what was missing and filed a complaint to the VIRTUAL security department they claim they have. A woman called Myrna kept assuring me that I will be reimbursed for what was stolen since the insurance company will pay for it all. It is end of October now. ie 8 months after the miserable trip, they never return my calls and I can never find the head of security. He/she are constantly not there.
It was such a bad vacation. People are waiting for tourists to rip them off. They are dishonest. And they look you in the eye and lie. And if you are hugry expect LOOOONG lines for BAAAAD food.

my advice, go to the other resort.
