Hix Island House is a unique indoor/outdoor living adventure, night theater under the stars, created for your pleasure. The three villas (Casa Redonda, Casa Rectangular and Casa Triangular) possess the largest studio lofts on Vieques and are dramatically sited on a gentle rolling hillside, La Colina del Sol (The Hill of the Sun). This idyllic retreat, in the quiet tranquil rural district of Pilon, is surrounded by its own 12 acres of wooded land that attracts a variety of birds and butterflies; beautiful palm lined beaches (Sun Bay and Green Beach) are 10 minutes away by car.

The studios, with efficiency kitchens, outdoor shower courts, and private patios, have dramatic panoramic views of the Caribbean and are designed to collect the refreshing trade winds. Atop the landscaped roof of a studio an apricot colored canopy sail shades a perfect place to enjoy the sunrise or sunset. You can see for 50 miles.

A tradition at Hix Island House is stocking your apartment for breakfasts including Neeva Gayle's home made potato bread and for your comfort her famous luxurious cotton shirts and robes. You can request additional meals, pick up your own groceries or take the ten minute stroll to the rural restaurants Chez Shack and New Dawn.

The atmosphere at Hix Island House is casual, relaxing, comfortable, and restful. The architect/owner, John Hix, has created a dramatic and unique Zen-like architecture, hand crafted from concrete and wood, polished, stained, and hand rubbed. Appointed with furniture inspired by Rietveld(De Stijl), it authors a rustic elegance, a stimulating cutting edge experience for the up-scale traveler.

Ecology plays a big role at Hix Island Houses. Solar panels provide all the electricity and hot water. Municipal electricity is a backup only. Water is collected as an alternative for the municipal supply. Shower and basins flow to fruit trees: guavas, bananas, papayas, lemons; a great way to give back to nature. An elegant pool, a yoga studio/coffee bar are also run by the sun.

Kudos to Hix Island House for receiving the 2002 U.S. EPA Environmental Quality Award from the United States Environmental Protection Agency. The Environmental Quality Award is the highest recognition presented to the public by the EPA office.
