This is the best of both worlds in Puerto Rico. Visited: December 2007 |

Caribe Mountain Villas is an absolute find. Set on a lush mountainside setting a half-hour's drive from Old San Juan, it affords beauty, privacy, and comfort convenient to the city as well Puerto Rico's east coast.
Perhaps best of all, owner Mitchell Nemeth — who risks gilding the lily by breeding orchids and cultivating every manner of tropical fruit tree — is probably the most willing and efficient concierge we've ever encountered. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of restaurants, shops, and attractions and an ability to secure reservations at a moment's notice.
The units are large, and equipped with cooking facilities. There's a swimming pool, a jungle trail, even a gas grill for barbecuing. One caveat: the 6-kilometer ride up the mountain from Route 3 ain't for the faint of heart. |

This is a beautiful mountainside resort. Visited: March 2007 |

From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the owner of the property, Mitch. We were given a wonderful tour of the property and told of all the beautiful flowers, fruit trees and birds that were on the property.
Mitch also let us know that he knew various locations to visit within a great radius of the resort (as well as others), if we decided to tour the island.
He also made wonderful sugestions of places to eat varing in price ranges. The best of all for the price was the Tangerine. It was atop of the WaterClub, and it had a spectacular view and environment.
Overall, Mitch gave a personal level of attention to his guests, something that's unheard of in other hotels.
Caribe Mountain Villas is a great place for the outdoor feeling of total tranquility. But keep in mind, it is in the mountain. So, for those who want the high-end luxury hotel experience, this may not be for you.
However, for those who enjoy total tranquility and beauty of a paradise in the mountain side, and like to explore nature at its best - this is an awesome experience. |

It was not what we expected. Visited: March 2007 |

Unfortunately, the place has potential, but it is not well kept at all.
We arrived and found the floors unswept in our "villa". During our four-night stay, we never saw Mitch (whom we were told was sick) or any other host. However, on the last day, we found him readily available for us to sign out and pay our bill.
No one came to empty the garbage containers during our entire stay. I got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, only to find a huge three-inch waterbug crawling around in the middle of the bathroom floor.
The furnishings were old and in need of repair. We felt it necessary to water the wilting plants in our "villa". The general grounds were severely unkept, as well. I refused to bring back meat to grill on the barbeque after opening it.
We were invited to walk around the grounds and into the nature trail, but were lacking the machete necessary to hack out the trail. Although the view was natural, the grounds were not that secluded. The view had other unkept dwellings dotting the mountainside easily within view of our balcony.
In addition, at about 8:00 PM each night, there was a very loud religious ceremony with preachers yelling on loud speakers seemingly right outside our villa. It lasted up to two hours each night, and made for unpleasant evenings in our room and on our balcony.
The nature sounds found on their website surprisingly omit the almost continuous barking dogs and crowing roosters heard throughout our stay.
All in all, our stay was very unpleasant. We do not recommend the Caribe Mountain Villas to anyone wanting to share some time with nature in Puerto Rico. We are very suspicious of the high ratings found within this web site. How could there be such a dichotomy of reviews? |

I found gold in Puerto Rico. Visited: January 2007 |

After deciding to make a spur of the moment trip to Puerto Rico, I stumbled by accident on the Caribe Mountain Villas web site. Since I had never been to PR, I thought it would be a wonderful way to "experience" the "real" Puerto Rico.
After talking to Mitchell, I made my plans and went. My first night was a surreal experience with all the jungle sounds. It was just fantastic! The rest of my stay, I felt like I had been living there for months.
Mitchell makes everyone feel so comfortable, it's like being part of the family. The grounds are a jungle-lover's gem. With all the new things being added, I for one can't wait to see the difference.
I'm just so jazzed, I'm bringing friends in July for another visit.
I think I found gold in the jungle just outside San Juan! |

This was one of the most relaxing places to vacation! I felt like it was my own resort. I liked that it was not crowded and congested like a hotel.
Also, the pool was heavenly, and the accommodations were perfect for my family. The owners of the resort were more than gracious! I would highly recommend the resort!

My wife and I enjoyed our stay in the villa. We wanted to try something different than the usual tourist hotels. Living in the villas was a great infusion of PR culture. We were here around Christmas -- we heard live Christmas carols coming from a home somwhere in the valley. We even visited a local home during Christmas Eve. All in all, it was more than what I had expected.
I must warn you though, if you are used to "Hyatt" type treatment in your vacations, this probably is not the place for you. However, if you are adventurous, curious, and really like tropical living - this place is a must visit.
Also, the hosts were great. Mitch -- other than providing me some great drinks -- was a very good guide. He knew all the local places, and was very helpful with his recommendations. Also, the area was clean and well maintained. |

This was, without a doubt, the most incredible place I've ever stayed. Mitch and Jeff were the world's most gracious hosts.
My husband and I have stayed with them many times, and actually had our wedding there in November of 2006. Everything was perfect!
The villas were spacious and beautiful, and the scenery was breathtaking. Also, they are ideally located about 20 minutes from the rainforest.
Caribe Mountain Villas is a nature enthusiast's paradise! |

We were so lucky to have found this awesome place! My husband and I were overwhelmed and relieved by the great hospitality the owners showed towards us.
The Caribe Mountain Villas was such a wonderful getaway, and it felt so much like a tropical home that we're already planning our return. We are also referring everyone we know to take a trip to Puerto Rico and stay at the Caribe Mountain Villas! |

Relaxation and excellent service made for a great vacation. Visited: April 2006 |

My wife, two small children, and in-laws recently returned from a week-long stay at this lovely hide-away. I rated it as a four-star due to the relaxing setting and the great service that Mitchell and Jeff provided.
If you like languid mornings by the pool, made-to-order dinners, and first rate concierge service in a unique setting, this is a good choice for you. I was most impressed by Mitchell's help in choosing great activities that were just right for our family.
Mitchell and Jeff's attentive, but not intrusive style made us feel like we were visiting friends. It was a perfect contrast to the impersonal and hectic atmosphere of the large beach-side resorts. We can't wait to come back next year. |

We spent 11 beautiful days at the villas and were completely satisfied with everything. It was a difficult choice for us to find a suitable accommodation for our 22-month-old daughter with some limited money, and we did not want any big beach resort.
Caribe Mountain Villas was exactly what we wanted. It was in a tropical setting, with jungle sounds, clean and spacious rooms, a nearly private pool, and wonderful terrace views. The owners were very nice and helpful, and we enjoyed complete privacy.
Also, the location was quite close to the city, but not in the city, which was great, too.
We travel a lot, and it will be difficult to find a similar place for our next vacation. |

My partner and I stayed at Caribe Mountain Villas for four nights in March. We had an absolutely wonderful time and would highly recommend the place for anyone who wants to get away from the big impersonal resorts and be immersed in the natural beauty of the island.
Jeff and Mitchell were lovely hosts. They were helpful and available, yet very respectful of our privacy and time alone. They arranged a pig roast for us and some of the other guests one night. The food was delicious and absolutely authentic to the region.
Our accommodations were spacious and well furnished and my favorite was our own outside deck fitted with chairs and table and a hammock. |

Our stay was too short! We would love to spend a month at this tranquil, beautiful mountain resort. The owners of this resort treated us like we were their friends, which I hope we became!
The place was conveniently located to all the major attractions. They had a magnificent pool and your own grill (we grilled fish, meat, corn, etc.). The supermarket was just five minutes away.
To summarize, I would call it a boutique resort with a homey feeling. What could be better? |

I found it to be depressing. Visited: March 2006 |

We just returned from an eleven-night stay with our young children. To get to the point, our villa was filthy. Huge cobwebs hung from the walls and fans. The bedroom shades were covered in dust and grime. The kitchen cabinets and cookware were all sticky with who knows what. The floor was swept when we arrived, but needed to be scrubbed with detergent.
I was not expecting anything fancy or stylish in the way of furnishings, but I was amazed at what was in our villa. Everything was severely dented, corroded or damaged. Faded pictures hung from the walls and were falling out of their frames. Closets and shelves were constructed of raw wood with nails popping out. The sliding patio doors kept falling off of their filthy tracks and could not be locked. The front door knob was hanging half off. It was depressing.
The grounds certainly had a natural charm to them, but were not well tended. The poolside chairs were black with dirt, and the toilet in the poolside changing area was a disgrace. A smelly trash can near the pool was not emptied for several days. This probably explains the live rat that came within six feet of us while we were eating dinner at the poolside patio table. Mitchell was specifically told about about the rat, and he only shrugged his shoulders replying "It's the tropics."
The tennis court recently shown on their website and currently promoted on their own signs, other sites and guidebooks was an abomination. If you could successfully make it down the rotten and rickety stairs to the "tennis area", you will find a fenced area with a net. The "surface" was so buckled up, cracked and covered with debris that no one should call it a court.
All in all, Caribe Mountain Villas was a depressing vacation destination. I do not recommend it. |

What can I say about my stay at Caribe Mountain Villas that hasn't already been said or sounds like a cliche? I've visited this great getaway twice (2004 and 2005), and would have made it three times if not for Hurricane Katrina throwing things out of whack for me here in New Orleans.
After spending weeks here each time, I feel that Mitchell and Jeff are like family. They make me feel like I'm at home and will go out of their way to make me feel at home. I'll never forget making pizza with them at the pool, or the fantastic barbecues.
The setting is idyllic, with the villas nestled in the rainforest on a mountain side. It is completely out of sight from everyone around you. Also, the coqui sing you to sleep each night.
The location is perfect. It is only minutes away from Old San Juan, the airport (for a quick jaunt down to the Virgin Islands or anywhere else you want to go) and much more.
I could go on forever, praising the villas. But seeing is believing. Check it out. You'll fall in love with Caribe Mountain Villas and will want to book your next stay before you leave. |

I booked a stay for 3 nights at Caribe based on their wonderful website and some user reviews. We are avid hikers and enjoy nature. I was looking for a quiet, rustic place that we could just relax in. However, we weren't quite ready for how outdoorsy this place really is. There are no screens so you will be open to the elements. The only AC is in the bedroom and they will shut your ac if you leave it on during the day. The place excuded the smell of bleach and cleaner which was unshakeable, and yet the shower and shower curtain were full of mold and mildew. (It costs $2 for a new shower curtain guys. ) The owners were pleasant and helpful with tips on where to go and eat. Their dog Buddy was charming. The pool area was probably the nicest feature although it is old and quite small. We love nature but are also clean freaks. If you are a clean freak do not stay here. That was my single biggest complaint. Just not clean enough for me. We love to cook on vacation and picked this place since all of the units have some sort of stove and refrigerator. We went to the nearby Pueblo and bought some food. Problem is that there were small bugs all over the stove and sink area so I wasn't too happy cooking either. If you enjoy the outdoors and don't mind some bugs and rustic living go for it. But if you like cleanliness don't do it.
Unfortunately, we would never stay here again. |

Caribe Mountain Villas was amazing! Here we had the benefit of great hosts/owners, Mitchell, Jeff, and Jason. We had a wonderful experience, from the first friendly phone call to the exemplary service. They also had a knowledge of the island and a willingness to help in anyway. I must not forget to mention, Buddy (mountain dog, timid but loves to be fed....very gentle creature), Eva and Dharma (pretty kitties).
Now let's talk about the location - wow! It was a tropical paradise! There were lush surroundings, beautiful vistas, clean villas (that felt more like home away from home). It was off the beaten path, with a great pool, a nature trail and tennis court. There seemed to be pride in ownership, that shined through in all the small details, that these gentlemen provided.
The mountain drive to get to this place, was a bit intimidating the first run, but after that, we got used to it. It actually became fun. Just drive the speed limit and you'll be fine.
It was definitely one of the best vacations I've had! My only regret was that my brother and I could not have stayed longer.
If you want a truly unique experience that is off the beaten path and an escape from the city jungle (with all kinds of fun options close by), this is the place for you. Personally, I am already talking to friends to go back here ASAP.
Thanks again for everything and I will see you soon! |

We spent a week from Dec. 21-28, and had a great time. Certainly, the Caribe Mountain Villas property has authentic local charm compared to the Marriots/Fairfield Inns where we usually stay.
Mitchell, Jeff and Jason were all genial hosts. They were eager to answer questions and provide information about places to visit. The neighbors were wonderful, too. We went to their home on Christmas Eve for a party. They led us to the small, very friendly church for Christmas Day mass.
Old San Juan was not to be missed - especially Fort El Morro, the Amadeus restaurant, and the street concert.
The recommended day snorkeling trip on the East Wind was fun for us, having come from very cold temperatures at home a few days earlier. The crew was lively. I saw yellow fin groupers, a first for me. It was beautiful.
Parking for the Bioluminescent Bay kayaking trip was harder than expected, probably because lots of families were here for kids to try out their new motor toys on the sidewalks. The moon was almost full, so the luminescent experience was not as sparkling as we were told it is in summer. But there were egrets and iguanas to be seen. And hey, a moonlit kayaking experience is a fun one! The crew was super.
The El Yunque waterfall swim was glorious. We wished we'd had more time there. We drove to Ponce for a day because of the caves and the observatory near Arecibo were closed on Mondays. Ponce was fun, especially La Lupita restaurant and experiencing another part of the island of Puerto Rico.
Drivers were pleasant, but very assertive in Puerto Rico. So, expect your adrenaline to pump as you drive around.
The entry to the villas was a sudden turn to the right and then down to the parking area. Buddy, the dog, was a shy delight (as were the two resident cats who snoozed in the office). I kind of wish we were driving back in again this minute, instead of preparing to go back to work! |

If you want to spend a few romantic days in the jungle or on a family fun vacation without the "commercial stress", this is the place for you!
My husband and I spent a couple of days at Caribe Mountain Villas this November and we just loved it!
It was tucked away in the jungle. The apartments were very nicely done and very comfortable - and Mitchel, Jeff and Jason were the best hosts we ever had on a trip. Whatever we needed, they were there for us! They helped us find this wonderful tour guide for a kayak trip to the Bioluminescent Bay (highly recommended, by the way!). They were incredibly helpful and so nice. We could tell that these guys loved what they did.
And the setting was beautiful. Let the coquis sing you to sleep at night - or take a stroll down to the jungle stream (beautiful!). There was no need to dress up for dinner at night - we just kicked back and relaxed!
We had to stay at the Westin Rio Mar for part of the trip because of a conference my husband had to attend, and I can tell you, we were not impressed and liked Caribe Mountain Villas so much better. It was jungle living with all the comfort - to us it didn't feel like staying at an apartment hotel - it felt more like staying with good friends. We truly relaxed here! Thanks, you guys! We'll be back soon and we will bring the kids! |

We stayed at the Villas for two weeks during hurricane Jeanne (and our anniversary/my birthday). Mitchell, Jeff, Jason, (Buddy and Eva), were all very pleasant, helpful and friendly. We enjoyed spending time with our new friends (the owners/staff) and they constantly checked on us throughout the storm.
If you are one who appreciates the beauty of nature, this place will definitely be of interest. The view from our terrace was wonderful (once the rain stopped) and the villa was very large.
I highly recommend the Caribe Mountain Villas for those who enjoy nature and the outdoors. It felt as if we were staying with family! |

After deciding to avoid the regular run of the mill hotels in Puerto Rico, I'm glad I found the website for this Villa. This villa made my stay in PR so much better.
It was a beautiful location and about 20 minutes away from San Juan. And the owners and staff were incredible. They catered to whatever we needed, and set up a few excursions around the island for our enjoyment. Their recommendations for locations, restaurants, and clubs were on point, we loved all the places they mentioned.
I'd definately recommend this place to anybody who wants to really experience a taste of Puerto Rico instead of a generic hotel you can find in any part of the country. Mitchell, Jeff and Jason - we will definitely be back. |
