3.0 stars needed attentive staff and renovations Visited: March 2005

I went to PuertoRico to see my aunt and thought how perfect it would be to stay in an ocean front room. The door to the deck was very hard to open. There were stains on the bedspead. The bathroom was not fresh, hair ontoilet seat.Towel bar broken and still was used to hold six towels that fell onfloor every time i adjustor used one.The shower curtain were very long and slimmy. The service in the restaurant is very slow. The food was good. The portions are very small and even for me it was very expensive. Its very hard to pay so much for that kind of service.my aunt and I had two breakfast of two eggs ham potatoe o.j and coffee for $37.I really hope ther manager sees this because the place has so much potential.IT can become the most beautiful place a person can never forget.Instead its the place no one wants to revisit.

3.0 stars It was right on the beach. Visited: February 2005

We selected this hotel after reading a review in the New York Times and checking the hotel's website. We found the hotel to be as described with the beach location as its best feature. As relaxing right on the beach was just what we were looking for, this small inn was ideal for us.

This hotel will not please everyone. It was not glitz and glam, but it was on the beach, in a quiet neighborhood, and it was charming, clean and family-friendly. They also had a very helpful staff and a friendly resident cat. Taxis to Old Town, museums, other restuarants, etc., were reasonable.

Also, the restaurant's food was very good, servers were always courteous - but sometimes slow. We would stay here again. In fact, we plan to later this year.

1.0 stars Horrible employee violations and over-priced Visited: January 2004

I had an unfortunate and oppressive employment at Hosteria del Mar. Hidden behind its quaint and nestled feeling is the reality of the condition of the workers at this tucked away hotel. The owners pay workers who work over time regular pay, but rather in the form of a check as is required by law, they are given envelopes with cash inside them, thus erasing all traceable evidence that the Worker's Department of Puerto Rico could use against them.

The owners of Hosteria del Mar (in particular the most vicious of them-Elsie Herger) make it a point to pennie-pinch in any way possible. Working the reception desk I had multiple duties that would normally require at least 2-3 employees. They were 1. concierge 2. reservation-taker 3. greeter 4. problem-solver for all 27 rooms 5. any and all other requests.

The ambience for workers is despicable, not to mention lack of appropriate service to the guests for the horrendous amount of money charged for the rooms, which tend to have recurring, constant problems. Reading over the other complaint emails I recall meeting many of these people while I worked there.

Stay at another hotel such as the Park Plaza Normany or another one of caliber that will charge you the same price or even less.

2.0 stars I would never stay here again. Visited: November 2002

There was mildew in my bathroom. I complained and they cleaned, but it was not solved until I spoke up again. The food was too expensive and the portions were so small that I had to order twice as much. I finally decided to go to the grocery store.

I was supposed to get a discount for booking early but never got it. I would never stay here again.

4.0 stars A very comfortable hotel right on the beach. Visited: August 2002

The people are very friendly, and the atmosphere is great.

You can fall asleep to the sound of the waves. You are also 15 minutes from beautiful Old San Juan. It may not be as luxurious as other hotels, but at least, the beach is right there!

4.0 stars Hosteria del Mar is a friendly, peaceful, and beautiful location. Visited: June 2002

I stayed here with my eight-year-old daughter and we had a blast. The bilingual staff was very friendly, the food in the restaurant was among the best we had in Puerto Rico, and the setting (right on the beach in the residential Ocean Park neighborhood) was fantastic. The rooms were simple, but clean and comfortable.

4.0 stars A nice small hotel right on beach. Visited: April 2002

This hotel was in a real nice limited-access residential neighborhood, which meant added security. There was only one way in or out of Ocean Park.

The hotel was on Tapia Street, but it was not a "through" street. On-street parking for our rental car was okay and near the hotel. Also, the hotel was right on a good beach.

We chose a room with kitchenette, which helped save money since food was quite expensive in Puerto Rico. The kitchenette had a refrigerator, a regular stove/oven and a sink. The cable television was good with both English and Spanish language channels.

The bathroom and shower were clean and neat. And the restaurant was very nice. It overlooked the beach. The food was also good with dinner selections ranging from $12 - $20.

There was also a patio with beach chairs.

The staff was mostly bi-lingual and they were friendly and helpful. Overall, we had a good experience.

2.0 stars Nice beach but no great shakes! Visited: January 2002

A friendly and rather simple guest house right on the Condado beach. Rooms not luxurious and somewhat rundown. The front desk people are friendly but with a leisurely mentality. The restaurant food is good but service is poor. The place has a great potential with good managers and better utilities.

4.0 stars Cozy, quiet, great people, view and food! Visited: October 2001

This is the best place to stay if you like peace and quiet, and a laid back, friendly place to stay.

The beach is beautiful, the food is fantastic and healthy, which is rare in Puerto Rico. It is worth every bit of the price.

4.0 stars We experienced simple splendor. Visited: August 2001

Hosteria del Mar is place for people who appreciate natural aesthetics - no glitz, pomp or toxic carpets here. It is one of the few places on the island to serve healthy vegetarian food (although service is slow ... true Caribbean style).

The rooms are simple, but comfortable and clean. There is a lovely cabana-like restaurant and the rooms overlook the beach. It appeals to ecologically-minded Americans and Europeans, yet also maintains beautiful traditional Puerto Rican culture. Since I discovered this place in 1995, it is the only place in the San Juan area I will stay.

2.0 stars Too expensive and out of the way Visited: May 2001

When we arrived, there was something wrong with our room. We were ushered into an old condo nearby. The stay was pricey as was the meals. Outside the gates of this Ocean Park Community is not such a nice neighborhood to boot.

3.0 stars Nice view but disappointing stay Visited: April 2001

Hotel lobby and view of ocean is nice. However, our room had a leak and we were placed in an old condo around the corner so I don't know how the rooms are. I found the people nice however I found it too costly for what it is as compared to other places in Puerto Rico.
