Oceana Hostal Playero, San Juan traveler review

If you want to experience Puerto Rico, stay here. Visited: May 2008
Posted by shiftfire
This place was absolutely what I wanted. It was not the Ritz, nor was it the "try-and-save-a-buck" inn.

The people at this place bent over backwards to insure that my interests and stay met my expectations. I told them what I wanted, and they made sure I knew every option available.

It was a boutique guest-house, slightly off the beaten path. Unless you rent a car, you have to travel by taxi, so bring your wallet, and make sure you know the address. But that goes for wherever you stay here.

Our friends stayed at the Ritz. All they ended up doing was spending more money. Oceana Hostal Playero was like the "hole-in-the-wall" bar you like to go to when you just want to sit back and not have to deal with pretentious people and (just plain stupidity).

Coqui Inn, San Juan traveler review

This was a traveler's nightmare! Visited: February 2008
Posted by beisen
We arrived at 11:00 pm, and they made us wait 45 minutes to check in because they were counting their till! Check-in took 30 minutes because they kept interrupting the process to sell candy and pop.

After 12:00 am, when we finally went to our rooms, I discovered within minutes there was no running water! The toilet had flushed once, but the tank had not refilled: it was unusable. When I went to tell them, there were other guests complaining of no water all day! The entire hotel was without running water, so we could not be moved.

By 1:00 am, I had secured two rooms elsewhere. I told them we could not stay at The Coqui because of the situation, and I requested that they issue a refund. After refusing a few times, the clerk said I needed to fill out a form and call the manager on the next day.

Then, she gave me a form stating ” I am knowingly canceling my reservation without sufficient notice and agree to pay all charges”. I refused to sign it, and demanded the correct form. I filled out the correct form, and spoke with the manager the next day. He was apologetic. He agreed to credit my card for the full amount of $204.92, but said it might take a few days “to go through”.

A week later, I called my bank and I discovered that instead of crediting my account for $204.92, they had charged me $204.92 for a second day! I'm still trying to dispute the charges with my credit card company!

This place was horrible! They were rude to us, and they were incompetent and dishonest.

Ocean Villas II - Rio Mar Beach Resort, Northeast Coast traveler review

Dont Stay Here! Visited: April 2008
Posted by mcalab
Do not come here! Condo’s need a major reconstruction, we where unable to sleep in the condo because the AC unit was too loud! Even worse you could not sit outside because the exhaust vents out HEAT onto the small balcony. The Rio Mar Realty was no help because the condos are privately owned. Nothing is included, No Bar, No Beach umbrellas, Hot tub was broken, No amenities and don’t forget to bring your own Toilet Paper.

WhereToStay.com comment: Gee Mike, sorry you had a bad experience renting from Rio Mar Realty. If you had rented from WhereToStay.com you would have had a very different experience. The villas we represent, like the one pictured, are impeccably maintained, newly remodeled, and even have a concierge to help you. The villas have a full kitchen and you have full access to the hotel next door and all its amenities. You are correct AC units do produce heat. You might want to turn of the AC units when you are outdoors. This is one of the most popular villas on the site and everyone we send loves it. Many repeat guests. Sorry you had a bad experience.

Parador Costa Del Mar, Southwest Area traveler review

This was the best vacation ever! Visited: April 2008
Posted by bdawg
My girlfriend and I stayed at the Parador Costa Del Mar for five days, and four nights in late April 2008.

The hotel was very clean and comfortable, and the staff was knowledgable and helpful. The pictures tell no lies. It really was that beautiful - especially if you have one of the rooms facing the ocean.

The morning breakfast was delicious and quite unexpected. It was not the usual continental breakfast, but rather a full menu with varying selections.

The hotel did not have beach access; however, it was within walking distance. A car is necessary for this area, as public transportation really doesn't exist.

My only complaint was that the cable went out intermittently, but that is a problem throughout the island. Plus, who needs cable when you are in Paradise! I loved this place.

El Conquistador Golf Resort & Casino, Fajardo & Humacao Areas traveler review

Beware! Visited: April 2008
Posted by blondrea
I travel a lot, and I'm an easygoing person. So when I went to El Conquistador in Puerto Rico, I expected to have a great time. And though we found the Puerto Ricans overall to be truly lovely, genial people, we were shocked at the deceit we experienced at this resort!

I suggest you definitely watch your back. Things were stolen from our room. (Use the safe!) Many things were falsely charged to our room, and the front desk did not want to hear about it. We made good and certain that they did, and eventually got every line item removed. But it took a lot of work.

Don't wait until your check out time, review your bill in advance! We did, and it still took two days to straighten out! The front-desk personnel told me to my face that they "do not want to deal with it."

Astoundingly, every single person checking out when I was (there were three agents open) had a bill dispute! Plus, one poor man approached the check-out desk and said, and I quote, "My room was broken into. Again."

If you stay here, expect erroneous charges, overall hostility, average rooms, and a very, very uninteresting location (no town anywhere near).

Also, do not expect to see a piece of fruit during your entire stay. I had greasy, bland food. Expect absolute mediocrity if you choose to stay here. Or better yet, avoid this diabolical dump altogether!

Finally, there is zero nightlife here - absolutely nothing!

This was in a good location. Visited: April 2008

The air conditioning was too noisy. I think we got the worst room, as we saw little roaches. My friends in another room were happy, though.

The staff was friendly. Victoria was lovely. They served a good breakfast, with good coffee.

Also, it was in a very convenient location. If they would invest a little more in the decor, it would be much better.

Light Tackle Adventure Tarpon Fishing, Puerto Rico traveler review

My "return from Puerto Rico" report. Visited: November 1999
Posted by tarponhombre
I've just returned from Puerto Rico. My trip wasn't as successful as the report I read that someone else had posted. However, Capt. Rosario was first-class.

I fished one day with Capt. Pochy Rosario, and I landed my first Tarpon. We saw tons of tarpon and one monster barracuda! I had four eats and landed two, one of around 80 lbs and a baby tarpon. One of the fish, I have to admit, I trout set on after he ate it -stupid, stupid, stupid! After all, I have been a trout guide for 15 years!

I have to agree with one of the replies to my first thread to not fish San Juan. I know some people have had success there, but after fishing in Cabo Rojo in crystal clear water as opposed to the murky lagoons of San Juan, I'll take Boqueron any day.

I didn't get a chance to get to Culebra or Vieques, though, I was able to catch some barracuda in some spots on the north shore in Vega Baja.

My wife and I decided to get away. By chance, we picked El Legado first because I love golf. From the minute we arrived, we were treated like we had been here forever.

Chi and his wife were great, down to earth people. Also, Maria and the rest of the staff were the best.

Good luck, and I hope to visit again.

Villa Montana Beach Resort, Isabela traveler review

We were very disappointed. Visited: March 2008
Posted by happycorgs
My girlfriend and I stayed at Villa Montana in Aguadilla for a week in March, and it was horrible. We are both avid travelers, and have gone to many Caribbean destinations. This was, by far, the worst.

We never felt welcomed anywhere. The staff was disrespectful and rude to us. Nothing is more unattractive than sitting on a beach and seeing locals throwing beer bottles into the ocean.

Service at restaurant was so slow, and the food was overpriced. I shouldn’t have to go on a Caribbean vacation and have to hunt down the bartender to get another drink, a bill - or even water.

There was no island atmosphere here, either. We couldn’t wait to pack to go home. I suggest you save your money and go elsewhere.

Atlantic Beach Hotel, San Juan traveler review

This hotel needs a major face lift! Visited: March 2008
Posted by danct
First, the location was great. The beach was literally your own back yard. Also, the bartenders were friendly, attentive and funny - as were the people on the front desk.

In addition, there were no roaches as indicated on other reviews.

The bad part was that the rooms need upgrading! The curtains had tears on them, the comforters were as old as dirt, and housekeeping needs to be trained to vacuum or sweep the floors.

Our door kept getting jammed. We had to struggle with the keys for about ten minutes before we were able to unlock the door. Worst, the door got jammed from the inside (a major fire hazard).

If you are looking for just a place to sleep, this will be fine. Also, it would be good for hanging out with a friend. However, I would not recommend it for a honeymoon place or romantic getaway.

They did have access to a roof top balcony with nice views with lounge chairs and an outside shower. However, the place was dirty! Wear some flip flops for protection!

El Conquistador Golf Resort & Casino, Fajardo & Humacao Areas traveler review

It is incredible! Visited: March 2007

I have to say that anyone who could write a poor review of this hotel, or criticize the resort for having a ferry that brings you to a private island that makes you feel as if you've fallen off the end of the world has to be totally insane.

I have stayed here six times, and every time has been better.

Yes, it is somewhat pricy. But, it's not Motel 6. Yes, there is frog noise. It is the national treasure of Puerto Rico! Rather than complain about it, try opening the window and enjoy the free nature soundtrack.

Do not be fooled by bad reviews. This place is amazing.

La Paloma Guest House, Fajardo & Humacao Areas traveler review

At $65 per night, you can't beat it. Visited: February 2008
Posted by travelfam645
We stayed here for our first night in Puerto Rico. We were in transition to the island of Culebra, and wanted to break up the lengthy travel time. We were traveling with our two children.

We didn't rent a car at the airport because we were headed to the island of Culebra the very next day, so we needed a ride from SJU to La Paloma. Nilda offered to provide us with a ride, and to also take us to the Fajardo airport the next day for another $65 total for transportation on top of our room charge of $65.

All was provided as advertised, along with extra food that was fantastic.

I challenge you to find such a good deal on the eastern side of Puerto Rico. To me, it doesn't seem possible that they charge so much less than every other guest house or hotel.

Concerning theft or safety while staying at La Paloma: we felt very safe with our two children while staying here.

Also, if you need a place to stay on the eastern side of the island and you're not into paying $200 plus per night for lodging, La Paloma can't be beat.

As a footnote, it cost me over $200 per night for every night, each of the over 12 nights I spent on Culebra just for lodging, so I'm not cheap and do understand what a good deal is.

La Paloma's rates are about 30 percent lower than what they could or maybe even should be - value, value, value.

It was safe and clean. We had a good time, and enjoyed the company of Mike, Nilda and her family.

We spent four nights at the Luquillo Sunrise. It was a wise choice!

The hostpitality offered by Gary Neff and his staff was exemplary! If you've rented a car, this hotel puts you in position to enjoy lots of great activities on the east coast.

I understand the 14 rooms are usually filled. I recommend you book early!

Coqui Inn, San Juan traveler review

It's not bad for the price. Visited: March 2008
Posted by lindanjulio
Mine was a four-night stay here. Check in took almost one hour, because they had a problem with their books - the register caused delay.

The room was a good size for the price. It was generally clean, but could use a paint job. Also, the shower area could be updated.

It was less than $100 a night, and in a great location. It was safe, and had three big 8 ft deep pools on location. There were also nice outdoor sitting areas and outside parking.

There was no hot water in the shower, though. They upgraded and changed the room (softer bed and with a kitchenette). However, the air conditioner could have worked stronger.

I would go back.

I received excellent service, and the presentations were impressive. The lemongrass coconut miso soup was wonderful. The seared tuna appetizer was also very good!

Luquillo Sunrise Beach Inn, Northeast Coast traveler review

I was impressed with the view and the great staff. Visited: November 1999
Posted by sandrsun
We recently spent several days at the Luquillo Sunrise Beach Inn prior to a cruise leaving from San Juan. A short drive from San Juan, and a world away from the city, this was a wonderful little Inn overlooking the ocean.

Although we were not able to stay in a balcony room, our room was very comfortable with all amenities. Also, it was just steps away from the gated parking area.

Excellent breakfasts were served on the upstairs covered deck area with a gorgeous view of the ocean to start the day.

We utilized the computer in the common room, and spent some time in the hammock chairs on the deck.

The front office staff was excellent, and arranged excursions to Bio Bay (really fun, we were lazy and took the motorized tour), and a catamaran trip to Culebra to snorkel. It was great that the Inn provided beach towels and chairs for us to take to the beach.

The owners and their staff were friendly and accommodating, and did everything possible to make our stay memorable.

We highly recommend this Inn to all.

The Luquillo Sunrise Beach Inn was amazing.

The room was clean with a great view. The breakfast that was included was filling and tasty. The staff was helpful, too.

Everyone - from the people to whom I spoke on the phone to the people with whom I dealt at the Inn - were freindly and helpful. They connected me with great resources to make my trip everything that I had imagined and more. The advice I received about restaurants and kayaking in the Bioluminescent was right on target.

I would love to visit again and stay at the Luquillo Sunrise Beach Inn.
