Oceana Hostal Playero, San Juan traveler review

Much more than expected for the price Visited: August 2008

Beautiful, clean, comfortable, excellent location, great service and a very reasonable price. I would stay again and recommend it to every one. If not staying at the Ritz kinds, this is the place.

Oceana Hostal Playero, San Juan traveler review

Just OK Visited: August 2008
Posted by ashleyf,
The hotel was just ok. Definately ok for the price.
But... 1st- upon check in we were given a small room with 2 dbl beds, a sink, and mini frig, when I reserved a suite with full kitchen, dining area, separate living area, and separate bedroom with king bed. My husband went to the front desk and they were happy to change it.
2nd- the light fixture in the living area was large and room for 6 bulbs, but only 2 were working, by day 6 of our stay 1 was working. We told the frt desk, not replced, and 1 bulb out in dining rm fixture.
3rd- my son had thrown up on one of the towels, I left it in the bathroom for the maid to change, she didn't. She just fold it up and put it back on the shower floor to use as a mat. Maybe she didn't notice, but that means they re-use dirty towels.
Other than that I would stay here again for the price, just make sure you are looking at what your are promised and details of cleanliness.

Courtyard by Marriott San Juan Isla Verde, San Juan traveler review

The best hotel in Isla Verde Visited: July 2008
Posted by jandaroe
I went to the Courtyard Marriott July 2008. It was the best hotel I have been to in a long time. The staff is great especially the manager Mr. Arroyo, he is very accomadating and tends to your needs.
The hotel was very clean and the staff were very nice and helpful from the doormen to the managers and the restaurants are great, If you stay here you must eat at Salsa Restaurant, the buffet will be the best Puerto Rican Cuisine you can ever eat.
The beach is great and so are the pools even though they should get cleaned every other day.
This is a great hotel for business people, families and couples.
One more thing thats great in this hotel is that there is nightly live entertainment that everyone enjoys, and if like casinos this is your place to stay.

Guesthouse 57, San Juan traveler review

These are cool apartments - and this is a great deal! Visited: April 2008

I´ve stayed here twice.

The first time, I stayed at a beautiful apartment with a private outdoor. The apartment had a stainless steel kitchen, cool futon, a comfy queen sized bed, and a big bathroom.

I brought my Mac mini, and I hooked it up to the hdmi enabled flat screen tv. I looked around the are, and these apartments are hot! It's definitely a must if you are visiting the San Juan/Condado/Ocean Park area.

Pictures do not do this property justice at all!! Visited: July 2008

When we spoke with the owners, they were extremely courteous and welcoming.

When we arrived, we realized what an amazing deal we actually got because of the level of quality that we received would have cost four times more in any hotel.

It was definitely a two thumbs up!

Oceana Hostal Hotel was not what I expected. Visited: June 2008

The staff was very nice. However, the hotel was not what I thought it would be.

I will be going back to San Juan, but I will not stay at the Oceana again. The rooms were not clean, and sometimes the price is not always right.

It was a beautiful hotel and grounds. Visited: March 2008

Our stay at the InterContinental Resort in San Juan, PR, was wonderful.

The grounds were beautiful - as well as the pool area. Also, the rooms were large, comfortable and well maintained.

Don't forget to eat at Ruth Chris Steakhouse. The casino was fun, too.

Comfort Inn San Juan, San Juan traveler review

This is the worst hotel for your money. Visited: June 2008
Posted by pugg3970
I stayed in the King suite. It must have been the oldest room in the hotel. It looked like Grandma's furniture was moved into it.

It had a kitchen, and a few plates. However, there were no utensils.

Don't waste your time and money here. They charge you for parking, Internet service, and use of the safe. I suggest you spend a little extra, and stay at a casino hotel. That's the way to go!

If you want to experience Puerto Rico, stay here. Visited: May 2008

This place was absolutely what I wanted. It was not the Ritz, nor was it the "try-and-save-a-buck" inn.

The people at this place bent over backwards to insure that my interests and stay met my expectations. I told them what I wanted, and they made sure I knew every option available.

It was a boutique guest-house, slightly off the beaten path. Unless you rent a car, you have to travel by taxi, so bring your wallet, and make sure you know the address. But that goes for wherever you stay here.

Our friends stayed at the Ritz. All they ended up doing was spending more money. Oceana Hostal Playero was like the "hole-in-the-wall" bar you like to go to when you just want to sit back and not have to deal with pretentious people and (just plain stupidity).

Coqui Inn, San Juan traveler review

This was a traveler's nightmare! Visited: February 2008
Posted by beisen
We arrived at 11:00 pm, and they made us wait 45 minutes to check in because they were counting their till! Check-in took 30 minutes because they kept interrupting the process to sell candy and pop.

After 12:00 am, when we finally went to our rooms, I discovered within minutes there was no running water! The toilet had flushed once, but the tank had not refilled: it was unusable. When I went to tell them, there were other guests complaining of no water all day! The entire hotel was without running water, so we could not be moved.

By 1:00 am, I had secured two rooms elsewhere. I told them we could not stay at The Coqui because of the situation, and I requested that they issue a refund. After refusing a few times, the clerk said I needed to fill out a form and call the manager on the next day.

Then, she gave me a form stating ” I am knowingly canceling my reservation without sufficient notice and agree to pay all charges”. I refused to sign it, and demanded the correct form. I filled out the correct form, and spoke with the manager the next day. He was apologetic. He agreed to credit my card for the full amount of $204.92, but said it might take a few days “to go through”.

A week later, I called my bank and I discovered that instead of crediting my account for $204.92, they had charged me $204.92 for a second day! I'm still trying to dispute the charges with my credit card company!

This place was horrible! They were rude to us, and they were incompetent and dishonest.

This was in a good location. Visited: April 2008

The air conditioning was too noisy. I think we got the worst room, as we saw little roaches. My friends in another room were happy, though.

The staff was friendly. Victoria was lovely. They served a good breakfast, with good coffee.

Also, it was in a very convenient location. If they would invest a little more in the decor, it would be much better.

Atlantic Beach Hotel, San Juan traveler review

This hotel needs a major face lift! Visited: March 2008
Posted by danct
First, the location was great. The beach was literally your own back yard. Also, the bartenders were friendly, attentive and funny - as were the people on the front desk.

In addition, there were no roaches as indicated on other reviews.

The bad part was that the rooms need upgrading! The curtains had tears on them, the comforters were as old as dirt, and housekeeping needs to be trained to vacuum or sweep the floors.

Our door kept getting jammed. We had to struggle with the keys for about ten minutes before we were able to unlock the door. Worst, the door got jammed from the inside (a major fire hazard).

If you are looking for just a place to sleep, this will be fine. Also, it would be good for hanging out with a friend. However, I would not recommend it for a honeymoon place or romantic getaway.

They did have access to a roof top balcony with nice views with lounge chairs and an outside shower. However, the place was dirty! Wear some flip flops for protection!

Coqui Inn, San Juan traveler review

It's not bad for the price. Visited: March 2008
Posted by lindanjulio
Mine was a four-night stay here. Check in took almost one hour, because they had a problem with their books - the register caused delay.

The room was a good size for the price. It was generally clean, but could use a paint job. Also, the shower area could be updated.

It was less than $100 a night, and in a great location. It was safe, and had three big 8 ft deep pools on location. There were also nice outdoor sitting areas and outside parking.

There was no hot water in the shower, though. They upgraded and changed the room (softer bed and with a kitchenette). However, the air conditioner could have worked stronger.

I would go back.

Oceana Hostal Playero, San Juan traveler review

This place was nasty.
Posted by prlover
I arrived here at 2:00 am on a late flight. They put my wife, our five-year-old and nine-month-old, and me in a disgusting room. It was worn out, missing tile in the bath tub, and had no water pressure - for $130.

Breakfast was a slice of bread and a slice of fruit. Coffee was okay, but there were cigarette ashes on our table - which we had to clean off ourselves.

I had reserved a villa for two days for when we came back to San Juan five days later. I wanted to see what I was paying for. So, I asked to see the room. They showed me a decent room (not a fully equipped kitchen) but I had already paid for it, so I figured I would just deal.

When I came back five days later, they couldn't find my information or the key to the room. Finally, they said the room was ready - except they brought me to a different room.

It was so gross, there was no way I would let my kids be in there for two days. My wife saw a cockroach, and the room smelled like mold. The extra bed was by the front door, and the TV was on top of the kitchen counter. There were no pots, pans or anything.

They advertised a fully equipped kithcen, so we bought all these groceries. I demanded my money back. The female owner gave me my money back, but gave us this death look as we drove off. Don't stay here - it is not worth the money.

This is a wonderful find in the big city.

Three couples stayed here for the first part of our Puerto Rico "around the island" trip.

It is an older guest house. However, it is very clean, and the location on the beach is terrific.

The staff is very helpful, and the price of the rooms can't be beat. We would stay here again.

Condado Plaza Hotel & Casino, San Juan traveler review

Condado Plaza is an upscale hotel after the renovation.
Posted by laurenvmu
I have never been to Puerto Rico before, and was here last week for a work function. The hotel had recently undergone some major renovations, and it was apparent.

The guest room I stayed in was five-star quality. It was much better than what these other, older reviews have stated. They've obviously poured some serious money into this hotel.

The food was still sort of poor, but I find most hotel food to be all the same.

If you're going to be staying in your room the whole time, this is the hotel for you! They also had a very nice pool and private beach, and we were able to walk down the main street without incident. There was a Subway and a Chili's within a five-minute walk, too!

I loved this hotel. It was very relaxing and very modern. The only thing I would recommend to travelers would be that, upon arrival, hang on to your own luggage; don't check it with the staff. The room they kept the luggage in was very large, and not really secure at all.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel - and if someone else was paying for it (like my company) I would stay here again!

Atlantic Beach Hotel, San Juan traveler review

I had a great time at the Atlantic Beach Hotel.
Posted by dc_aquarian
I have recently been searching the net for other venues in San Juan. However, after staying at the Atlantic Beach Hotel in November of 2004, (and reading the reviews on this site) I felt compelled to write my own review.

My stay at the hotel lasted about four days. I was impressed by the friendliness of the staff, and the bartenders were courteous and coversational as well.

The beach bar was great! People came from all over the island and paid a cover charge to hang out there. I loved the beachfront location, and the locals were friendly as well. The party started a little after sundown, and didn't stop until 6:00 am!

I began every morning with a swim in the ocean, and spent quiet days just lounging on the beach, enjoying the sun, waves, and sand. I went with a friend then, and am planning to return alone in November of this year.

Five star accomodations it's not - but for clean, friendly accommodations, that are very resonably priced, it was money well spent.

That was almost four years ago, and I don't know what has changed since then. Still, in the end, the Atlantic Beach Hotel will always hold a special place in my heart.

Caribe Hilton San Juan, San Juan traveler review

It was disappointing.
Posted by lindw08
We arrived late (flight delay), and the room wasn't properly prepared. They sent us to the wrong room three times, and we had to go way back to the front desk. Then, the key didn't work.

We didn't have towels, a trash can, or coffee - and the phone didn't work, so back to the front desk.

By the time we were in the room, the restaurants were closed, so we had to use room service. I think we got the dregs due to late arrival.

Also, the ice and soda machines on our floor were broken. We had to go to another floor. We were here five nights, and had to call housekeeping for something that was missing each night - including the room not being made up one day.

We were told there was complimentary water in our room, yet when we requested it, it was room service - and $20.00 for four Dasani waters.

The room was supposedly remodeled, yet the bathroom was a disgrace. The tub was completely plugged with rusted fixtures. Also, the stopper was rusted, broken and placed on the tub corner.

It was totally not what I expected from a Hilton. I have to admit though, that the pool, beach, and grounds were beautiful.

Food in the Palmera wasn't good - or worth the price. We were given a food credit for our troubles, and Palmera was the only place we could use it.

It would have been very nice if the room was prepared, stocked, and remodeled.

Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa, a Wyndham Grand Resort, San Juan traveler review

We had a very pleasant and relaxing week in this villa. Visited: January 2008
Posted by keith_co83
It was well located, about three minutes from the Golf Club, and seven minutes from the Ocean Villas and the Resort Center, with pools, restaurants, exercise facility, etc. Guests travel by golf cart from the villas to these facilities, which is a great way to get around the resort.

A rental car is useful only if one wants to spend a lot of time away from the resort. The same car service that picks up at the airport will take you to dinner, tours, and other places. They are very nice people, too.

We went to El Conquistador for dinner one night, and the total transportation bill was, with a generous tip, $35 per couple.

The villa aspect was wonderful for the extra space, split cost, etc., but they are approaching the "tired" stage and need new mattresses and linens.

Also, the usual typed, in-plastic information about the villa would be useful (e.g., we had no hot water for the first 1.5 days, and it turned out that what looked like a wall switch for a light in the kitchen actually turned on the hot water heat-er)!

Ditto, the usual instructions for the TV would be useful--which station the TV itself should be tuned to, use the TV remote only to turn on and off and the cable remote for everything else.

We found a perfectly adequate older IBM computer, with direct access to hi-speed internet. It was very useful to confirm flights an things. However, if I had not happened to notice it under the TV and wondered if it worked, we would not have been able to check e-mail, etc. Ergo, the suggestion for written info.

The people managing the villas were very responsive, and very nice about any problems.

Overall, the combo of "Where to Stay" and the local people for transportation and management made it very easy to arrange a relaxing vacation. Thanks due to Andrew, Shawna, Alfred, and Marco for their excellent help.

The only down part was the wet condition of the two golf courses. They were very nice courses, but they had had considerable rain, and most days it was "cart path" only for carts, so 5-hour+ rounds were not unusual.

I look forward to playing them again sometime under better conditions!
