I would not return to Sugar Bay. Visited: June 2007 |

This resort was tired and unkempt. Sadly, was my first visit to these islands, and an all-inclusive resort and totally put me off.
On arriving, I was looking forward to plenty of local food and fresh fish. The food was plentiful, but was not local. Also, it did not vary from day to day and was very, very disappointing.
The lunch buffet seemed to be the same day after day, and the specials menu always seemed an effort for the staff to provide.
The evening meals were more than disappointing - apart from the a la carte evenings, which were a slight improvement.
The entertainment that was promised in the brochure was non-existent, and it was an effort to get a drink after 10.30 pm, as the bar staff always wanted to be on the early bus home. We had to chase the staff to get a drink during the morning, and if we dared ask for something slightly unusual, we were met with scowls.
The rooms were cleaned well daily, which was the best service at the resort. In addition, the pools were good and clean.
As a resort for a budget holiday (although not budget priced), this would fare well. However, do not go all-inclusive, go elsewhere to eat. The whole resort needs overhauling - including the customer service skills of the staff and management. |

I would never return to Sugar Bay Club. Visited: January 2007 |

Sugar Bay Club staff and food were mediocre, with the front desk clerks being generally unresponsive to requests and unsatisfactory overall.
Booked on the all inclusive plan, there were two nights out of seven that the restaurant ran out of food an hour before scheduled closing. The facility ran out of beer one afternoon, and it was only after a great deal of cajoling that the general manager brought a case of warm beer to the bar. After meeting with the GM, it was obvious where the poor service originated.
The rooms were generally clean, but several had ants that found their way into peoples' clothing.
I would never return to this place, but do find St Kitts an excellent vacation location. |

Sugar Bay is Semi-Sweet Visited: November 2006 |

My husband and I decided about a month ahead of time that we wanted to get away over our Thanksgiving holiday. After much searching of package deals, we finally found one that was both affordable and palatable for the Sugar Bay Club. (We generally prefer to do our own bookings at small inns with local charm, anything with more than 30 rooms we generally write off!)
Being well-prepared by reading as many reviews as possible, we found we were overall pleasantly surprised with our choice. Most staff members we encountered were helpful and gracious. Both pool areas were relatively empty during the day. The mix of guests was overall British with a few other Americans thrown in. The beach on location had a lovely, wild feel to it and we enjoyed walking along it right after our arrival.
The food quality overall was adequate. We found plenty of variety for each meal, but not many things that we would rave about. One night here was a BBQ buffet, and we noticed that when there were more local fare available such as jerk pork, rice and peas, pumpkin soup, etc that it was much tastier than the other fare. In other words, most food was edible, usually bland or otherwise inoffensive, but I don't suppose anybody would go hungry staying here.
The garden view category room was the least expensive, and of a fair size. It had a king bed, sitting area, patio, and a bathoom with both a tub and shower. The standards of housekeeping were high, and the room was dated but pleasant and comfortable.
We thought St. Kitts to be a beautiful island, and we were glad to have a rental car for our stay so that we could explore at our leisure. We enjoyed our time here very much, but unlike other islands (Nevis and Grenada, for two examples), we did not feel her Siren call, so very likely we will not be back again unless under similar circumstances.
Sugar Bay Club, whilst not my ideal in vacationing style, nonetheless managed to please us, and when I recall the excellent price we found, I must declare it a very good value, indeed! |

We loved LaLuna! Visited: November 2006 |

My husband and I followed up a week-long villa stay on Grenada with a three-night splurge at La Luna. While we did miss the extra space and privacy that a villa provides, we both enjoyed the hotel very much.
Every staff member we encountered was quite gracious and friendly (they even upgraded us by one room category). The limited food we sampled was delicious, and we thought the room set-up was pretty close to ideal.
The bedrooms were spacious and romantic with very comfortable beds. The CD players were a nice touch, too. The a/c was extremely efficient, and unlike other folks, we found the open air bathrooms charming.
We spent many happy hours outside on our deck reading and lounging; and the plunge pool was perfectly situated for enjoying a drink whilst watching the sunset.
The water was a bit rough during our stay, but we enjoyed walking the beach several times each day. Snorkeling was about average, I thought, but still provided enough to keep me occupied for an hour or so at a time. The hotel was probably at around 30% capacity during our stay, so it was perfectly quiet--just the way we like it.
Grenada is quickly becoming my favorite island in the Caribbean and if I were choosing a hotel/resort for a special and/or romantic occasion, I would not hesitate to choose LaLuna in the future. |

This is a great little resort. Visited: June 2006 |

Overall, we were very pleased with Sugar Bay. We enjoyed the area, the grounds, and the friendliness of the staff and other guests.
We loved the family pool with the waterfall and volleyball net. Since there were almost no children at the resort, it was still a peaceful and relaxing place to swim and sunbathe.
The rest of the grounds, including the adult pool and the paths, were also beautiful with flowers, flowering bushes and pretty palm trees. The buildings were fairly well maintained from the outsides too.
We loved our poolside room. It was huge. It featured an entryway with a small bed, and a main room with king bed, nightstands, television, mini-fridge, small sitting area, and plenty of closet and drawer space.
We did miss having an alarm clock, as we had to check our watches in the dark if we woke up too early and we had to set the alarm on a cell phone for the early mornings when we had plans. Also, coffee lovers will miss that there’s no coffee maker in the rooms. The bathroom was big enough, and the room was well cleaned every day – even washing the tile floor every day instead of just sweeping it. These details were appreciated.
The service was great from nearly everyone. The manager, Andrew, was very friendly and recognized us even when we were in town or at another hotel. Also, the cleaning ladies, maintenance staff, servers and bartenders - nearly everyone was very friendly and attentive.
We were pleased with the quality of the food, but felt that more variety would have been appreciated. Breakfast was a buffet, but we could always order an omelet or eggs from the kitchen. It was basically the same every day, though.
Lunch was a buffet, but on most days we could order from a small menu from the kitchen. Since we’re not huge buffet people, we liked this option, and did this every day that we had lunch at the resort.
Dinner was supposed to be buffet five nights with a la carte on two nights. We didn’t see this, and saw buffet every night. Most nights were good, some nights were great and one night nothing appealed to us. And this is the night that we chose to leave the resort for dinner, so that was fine. They put up a sign every morning showing the night’s dinner selections, so that was nice.
The bars were nice, and the bartenders were friendly. We did feel that having a few extra items would help make drinks with more variety. Adding just some Blue Curacao, fresh strawberries and bananas and vanilla vodka would add considerably more drinks to the possible list. |

I was very disappointed. Visited: May 2006 |

I normally travel single, and the room I was given had two twin beds pushed together. So, if I rolled over in the middle, the bed would split apart and I would almost fall to the floor.
It was an all-inclusive resort. However, there was no entertainment throughout the day. I thought the food was a bit pricy since I did not do the all-inclusive plan.
The beach amenities were poor. I walked down to the Marriott and wished I had booked with them. I will not return to this resort, but I will return to St. Kitts. |

If you are looking for a five-star hotel, pay the money and stay at the Marriott. However, if you are looking for a clean, safe, and relatively economical resort with great food and fantastic staff - this is a great place to stay!
The manager, Andrew, will see to your every need in an expedient manner. The beach is average for the area, as it is on the Atlantic side. However, there is a Caribbean beach within a five-minute walk.
We give this resort a resounding "ten"! |

I'll keep this short.
The good points were the nice weather and clean rooms.
The bad points were the terrible food - we never saw any local food on the menu. Also, the staff, especially the front desk personnel, were the worst I've ever come across in all my years of travel.
In addition, the grounds were unkempt, and the entire facility was basically run down. The front desk tried to stiff me with a higher bill, which certainly got my tempers up.
The long and short of it is - I won't stay here again. |

We experienced a distinct lack of customer service. Visited: June 2004 |

June 2004
I will start by defending the resort as my major gripe would have to do with a lack of professional training in customer services. Surly faces were a long way short of welcoming.
Also, a la carte night could only be described as a misadventure that I felt barley passed as menu of the day. Soft cushions on one side of the restaurant and not on the other left us feeling segregated.
I was told that bananas were out of season, yet we were readily able to find them in abundant supply in a local supermarket. I had a telephone call put through to my room without interogating the caller as to whom he wished to speak to. Needless to say it was not for my room and my wife my son and I were awakened from our sleep.
Some guests received bowls of fruit whilst others did not. The hotel seemed genuinely concerned and upset by the comments made to them. Unfortunately for them, a good hotel business is built upon refferals. And irrespective of season, a hotel is expected to please most of the guests most of the time.
In short, I found the hotel to be unprofessional in its approach to the day to day running of its business. Staff should smile, be welcoming and appear concerned. That is what brings us back to resorts! |

A coat of paint does not make a refurbishment.
There were so many coats of paint that the doors did not close, others were peeling and I thought the whole place looked a mess. The gardens looked unkept, the pool water felt tepid to warm, drinks were served in children's sizes, and the food hygiene standards seemed third world.
And, they asked us to dress up for dinner! I would not mind wearing my DJ's if it was up to standard, but I thought the food selection was minimal (no local food for a start) and poorly prepared.
The air conditioning was too noisy to leave on at night and it was too warm to sleep without it. The TV was missing its remote (in any case there was not much choice available) and no safe deposit box when I arrived.
I stayed one night of the five I had planned, walked out and into the Marriot next door which was a real hotel and turned out to be cheaper. |

We stayed at the Rex Papillion. In fact, we just arrived home yesterday, so it is still a very fresh memory.
When we first arrived, we were greeted with a cocktail. We were given the key to our room and our bags were carried up for us. The room was big and spacious, clean, nicely decorated and basically had everyting we needed, to make us feel very comfortable and at home. The room was fully air conditioned, along with a fan to keep us cool in the very hot weather.
There were two pools, a tennis court and two bars. The staff was friendly and helpful. The tour guide was available from 10 pm to 12 noon for guests to inquire about about all tours and events on the island. The person dealing with us was very helpful indeed.
We took part in the Catamaran Cruise to Nevis, which was throughly enjoyable and well worth the money. We were treated very well by the crew serving us cocktails and beverages all day long. The views and scenery were amazing.
We stopped aff at a Bay were we could dive and swim or snorkel. I found the snorkeling even more amazing. The clear waters and tropical fish were out of this world. Then we arrived on Nevis, and the white sand beach was perfect, along with palm trees, a cool breeze blowing the waves of the clear warm Caribbean Sea.
There was a barbeque awaiting our arrival, and any drink we fancied. This was all included in the price of the trip, which was 40 US dollars, per person.
The fun didn't stop there as on the way back to St. Kitts, the crew got a party started on our journey back to the island. So people were dancing on deck to local music. It was good fun for the younger couples, I guess.
We also took the rainforest and volcano tour. I strongly advise that hiking be your type of fun, for this trip was very difficult. It was also a risky trip, so people should be made more aware of the dangers involved. It was rigorous excercise (i.e. 4,000 ft. climb to top of the volcano). You need to be extremely fit to keep up. If this is not your type of thing, just go for the rainforest tour which was less strenous and quite enjoyable.
Also, you are not made aware of the extra charges involved in renting a car for the day/week. First, you are told it will cost 38 EC dollars to rent and 50 EC dollars for the license - which comes to 88 EC dollars. In fact, it will cost you over 200 EC dollars for one day.
All in all, I had a great holiday! And it was very reasonably priced for two weeks on a Caribbean island. I had no complaints about the hotel at all. I was very pleased. |

We have recently returned from the Rex Papillion St. Kitts and were more than happy with our holiday. The poolside cottage we had was spacious and clean with a separate lounge, bedroom and bathroom. The food was delicious and plentiful. The staff was pleasant and went out of their way to be helpful and ensure we had all we needed.
We met some wonderful people, enjoyed the entertainment in the hotel, and took part in the organized activites as well.
The position of the hotel meant we had a choice of both the Atlantic Ocean and the calmer Caribbean Sea.
The catamaran trip to Nevis was well worth the money and we also visited Brimstone Hill and took part in a Rainforest Walk with a guide which we enjoyed.
Improvements could be made in the roads and road signs for those hiring cars. |

Rex Papillon is a fantastic place to relax. Visited: October 2002 |

The Rex Papillon was just refurbished when we got there. As a matter of fact, we were the first guests to stay after the renovations were complete.
The place was totally spotless, I'm not sure if it will have stayed that way, but I'm sure, looking at the pride that the staff seemed to take, that it will. Everyone from the waitresses and the gardeners to the reception staff were great. They always greeted us with a smile, and took great care of us.
The food was marvelous. There was a great restaurant with an open front that looked over the golf course, with loads of palm trees. It was idyllic!
There was also an a la carte restaurant at night, which, for a very small additional cost, served lobster, steaks, etc. and was fantastic.
The hotel was on the Atlantic coast, which had a bit of a choppy sea. However, it was literally a five-minute walk to the Caribbean coast (it's a very narrow island!). There was a great hut where you could hire snorkeling gear. And there was wonderful sea life - just wade into the sea!
The catamaran trip to Nevis (the neighboring island) was one of the highlights. It was a great day out, with wonderful views of both islands. It cost about $40 US.
You also need to visit Brimstone Hill, which had lots of history about the old colonial days, and again, great views. There was not a lot to do on the island in the evening. It was very much a relaxing holiday.
If you want discos and late nights, then find somewhere else. But if you want the most relaxing time possible, in a green, lush paradise that has hills filled with old plantation houses, this is the place for you. If you are lucky, you may even see the monkeys and hummingbirds (we did).
To sum it up - the Papillon is very efficient, with tasty food and clean rooms, two pools, with fresh towels available all day. They have a great pool-side cocktail bar, which serves both local and international drinks.
We made lots of friends with some other guests, who all felt it was a great value for money. I loved it and would go back tomorrow. I'm sure you'll love it, too. |
