Long-established and enjoying continued popularity is the Gros Islet Friday night street party. The generally sleepy fishing village takes on a whole new dimension by sunset Friday night when vendors set up their stalls and the first revellers stroll in for sundowners. By 9pm, the place is heaving, music emanates from towering speakers and the smell of great local food wafts through the festive air. (close) |

BBQ's, sunset cruises and private charters for 16-80 'fun in the sun' people.
Seeing St. Lucia from the sea is a real treat, sometimes the boats are accompanied by playful dolphins as they sail down the calm Caribbean sea. The catamarans are large and very stable with plenty of seating for relaxing and chatting, with enough room to walk around and even dance if the mood takes you! The netting on the front of the boat is a great place to sit or lie and soak up the sun and watch the sea pass beneath you. (close) |

The volcano named Soufriere is the French word for sulphur from which the town of Soufriere got its name. The sulphur springs are a weak spot in the crust of an enormous collapsed crater, the result of volcanic upheaval 410,000 years ago.
Actually, you don't drive in. You drive up within a few hundred feet of the gurgling, steaming mass, then walk behind your guide -- whose service is included in the admission price -- around a fault in the substratum rock. It's a fascinating, educational half hour, though it can also be pretty stinky on a hot day. Cost: $1.25. Open: Daily 9-5. (close) |

(more)As the largest gardens in St Lucia, this site is one where visitors can find a quiet corner to sit among the flowers, away from any other tourists.
The gardens are built around the hilltop ruins of the Baron Micoud Estate House dating from 1766. Baron Micoud was a French army colonel and former Governor of St Lucia. The Baron deeded his land to his wife as he was afraid the British would confiscate it. The land then became known as Madame de Micoud's, which was corrupted to Ma Micoud and finally to Mamiku, its current name.
By 1796 the mansion had been taken by the British and used as a military post under General Sir John Moore. The Troops themselves were French Royalist who sided with the British. It was overrun by former slaves during the battle of the Brigands and burned to the ground. The French-Creole Captain of this post took his own life rather than face the disgrace of the defeat. The house is now the site of archeological excavations.
The gardens contain a wide range of tropical plants, orchids, herbs, plus several secluded secret gardens. The rest of the estate is a banana plantation also cultivating passion fruit and mangoes. (close) |

Visit the interpretation center, the Jambe de Bois restaurant, walk up to Fort Rodney or visit some of the ruins. You can do a half or full day outing - one for total relaxation or an expedition for the more adventurous. Don't forget your camera - you'll kick yourself if you do.
Morne Fortuné
Characterized by impressive monuments, a majestic powder magazine, unique gun batteries and redoubts and spectacular views of the entire island from its vantage point of height, it is a "must see" for any visitor to the island.
Maria Islands
The islands are set about one half mile from the mainland, with access provided by local fishing boats.
