We stayed at Ladera Resort in September for our honeymoon, and "grown-up Swiss Family Robinson" was my first thought.
We loved the enchanting scenery and the unique environment, but please note that this is not for the meek.
The rooms are not what you would usually think of as modern luxury, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
It is not for everyone, but for those who would love the Caribbean and the outdoors, there is nothing like it. |

We stayed at Ladera Resort in May for our 10th wedding anniversary and I dont think we could have picked a better place.
We are active, and enjoyed the unique environment with the three walls and having the excellent service required to do tours and exploring. The access to either the Hilton or Anse Chasanet was great and gave us choices.
The rooms are not what you would usually think of as luxury with high end furniture or televisions, wet bars or phones. But the wood work and attention to detail to provided privacy with only three walls was incredible.
It is not for everyone, but for those who would love the Caribbean and the outdoors, there is nothing like it. |

We spent the first four days of our honeymoon at Ladera and could not have been more pleased. I always had a picture in mind of what paradise should look like and Ladera filled that fantasy.
You cannot get a more breathtaking view - waking up in the morning to the Pitons literally right in front of you. It was so peaceful with only three walls and there was total privacy.
The food at Dasheene was top notch - a five star restaurant. Each staff member treated us as if we were the only guests here.
There were bugs at night, but we went during the rainy season in July. Regardless, it did not change my view of Ladera. I can't wait to go back one day! It was the most amazing place I have ever stayed. |

I was a bit nervous about the three walls, but was very happy with our choice. Yes, there were animals in the room and we were awakened by birds sitting on the balcony, but it added to the experience.
I also thought that there would be noise from the other rooms with the design of the resort, but we really heard nothing from the neighbors.
The resort was located in a remote area, and for the closest town, you will need a taxi to get to. The towns surrounding Ladera were very poor.
We spent the first four days of our honeymoon here and it was just what we needed. You can relax in your room, sit by the pool in a lounge chair and do nothing with no one around you. We ate at the restaurant for all of our meals and the food was good. The food was worth the price.
I cannot imagine a better place to vacation!

This being our first trip to the Caribbean, we didn't really know what to expect. We couldn't have picked a more beautiful place.
Overlooking the Pitons in the morning and watching the sun sneak behind Gros Piton in the evening was something we will miss.
The hotel was excellent. Our room was beautiful, although not the largest of the rooms they offered, it was ample for two sharing. The room came with a plunge pool, open bedroom, open living room and bathroom.
A previous reviewer stated the brochure and internet didn't do this place justice - that was so true.
The evening/nightime 'bugs' in the room did take a little getting used to, and being from England we weren't really used to this. They were no harm, though, and they usually ran mile once they saw us ~ it wasn't a nuisance and caused no concern.
The greatest asset of the hotel was the staff, they were truly excellent. From the gardeners and the cleaners to the management and the barstaff, they all surpassed anthing we've experienced before.
The restaurant was superb, also. Orlando and Nigel had a truly excellent restaurant and it was no suprise that it had been widely acknowledged. The menu, although changed daily, had not the variety I would have expected. And sometimes the child menu had to be called upon ~ but the staff/chefs were more than happy to accommodate us though.
Ear plugs are recommended ~ sometimes the noise from the tree frogs can wake you. We took the plugs from the plane. Also, an eye mask is helpful if you want to have a sleep past 7:00 am. And candles are a must for those romantic evenings around the plunge pool.
One final suggestion is that the road is currently being relaid, thus the taxi has to take a more 'scenic' route to the resort. This is somewhat bumpy and over an hour. I suggest the water taxi or helicopter maybe preferable.
We had a wonderful time. Thanks to Caroline, her wonderful staff and excellent locaton. We met some great people. It was perfect. |

Ladera is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. It is the perfect hotel in the perfect place. The views from the rooms are breathtaking. We watched the sun set behind the Pitons every night from our bed and the hummingbirds around the flowers surrounding our plunge pool.
The staff at Ladera is warm and friendly and the service is wonderful. True, meals are not rushed here and some may interpret that as slow service. For us, it was more time to relax, sip our wine and soak in the views.
At Ladera, dinner is the center of the evening. The food is excellent, they have a wonderful chef who is willing to make special requests. Get the romance package and you get a free bottle of wine with dinner each night.
I also loved the sound of the tree frogs and missed them when I got home! We can't wait to go back! |

What an amazing place! We were married at the Ladera on January 25, 2003 and could not have selected a more perfect location.
The staff could not have been more accommodating -- the setting could not have been more ideal!
The room was absolutely amazing. It was even more beautiful than we had imagined. The view was breathtaking. It was practically indescribable. Words truly cannot do this location justice.
We put our guests up in a suite which was equally breathtaking.
Meals at the Dasheen Restaurant were superb. I particuarly enjoyed the breakfast fruits (I am addicted to Island Pinapple now!); the Island Vegetable Soup; the local breads; and the Seafood Burrito for an appetizer. Orlando, the executive chef, did an amazing job with our wedding dinner!
We enjoyed snorkeling at Anse Chastenet, and a day sailing with Francis Sailing Tours. But we probably enjoyed the day we spent lounging around our room and hanging out by our own private (heated) plunge pool the best (apart from the wedding day itself that is!)
We give a solid recommendation for this wonderful resort. (Of course, not for those who can't stand the sight of geckos or being awakened to the sound of songbirds!)
Wow, what a place. We look forward to returning for a future anniversary!

We stayed here on our honeymoon. I did a lot of research on where to stay, and St. Lucia was our pick because of the rainforest and Ladera (on the recommendation of our travel agent). I am so glad we stayed here.
There are not enough words to describe the beauty of this place. We arrived at night (late), so we woke to this amazing view. There were birds, lizards, bugs and those very loud tree frogs, all in the room. It was all just part of this beautiful place.
The staff was great, even to my husband. They were all so patient with him (it was his first time out of the US). He asked so many questions, and they answered all of them - most of the time twice, since most to the time he had trouble understanding them.
The staff saw to our every need. We would recommend having the hotel getting you a guide if you venture out. It was helpful. The one my husband set up for us was awful. At least we could laugh about it.
The hotel took very good care of us. We stayed for eight nights, and it was just the right amount of time. Although, it was hard to get a call back to the US (although it could have been my husband again).
So, if you are wondering if you should go or not - go! |

For our honeymoon, we went to Ladera first where we planned to spend three nights then on to Sandals for four nights. I was a little worried about the lack of a wall, heat and bugs, because I know Kelly is very squeamish.
When we arrived late in the evening, it was dark, but the shadow of the two huge mountains in the distance was enough to take our breath away. After a fabulous dinner, we headed back to the room to enjoy a romantic dip in the pool. (I secretly packed some candles to place around the pool - a romantic touch!)
In the morning, some little birds hopped around our room and sang us some nice little tunes. The morning view of the Pitons in the distance took our breath away.
Our daily activities included a quiet walk through the resort’s garden, swimming in the hotel pool, and a walk to the Sulfur Springs volcano which was just 15 or 20 minutes away, (a beautiful walk).
We also went to the town of Soufriere, which seemed to be really authentic, and most people there paid no attention to us (we had lunch at the old courthouse - it was very good).
We went to the black sand beach at Anse Chastanet where we went snorkeling and took a rocky hike to a hidden beach. Sadly, the water taxi we scheduled didn’t allow us to stay long. After being to Ladera I can’t imagine having gone anywhere else, it was amazing.
The food at Dasheene was great, we had a bunch of great meals. Unfortunately there were no other options, except driving into town. But don’t let that take away from Dasheene - the food was authentic with fresh fruit in every meal. Eating there 4 or 5 days in a row would not be hard at all. Also, I heard that Fish Friday’s at a local fishing village was a lot of fun, but we did not go.
My suggestions: The romance package is a must, it gives you free wine with your dinner. Also, go for the meal plan, we did not and I think we paid more for food because of it. We went with the deluxe room, it was very nice and the waterfall provided extra privacy.
Security was not a problem. There was a small room safe for your valuables. Although we never really had any problems with bugs, I recommend some bug spray. We had one gecko that ran around our walls and the tiniest frog that hopped around our bathroom.
My final recommendation is to bring a few candles for extra romance.
The day we left Ladera to go to Sandals we were so sad. Sandals was no comparison to our island hideaway, Ladera. I will definitely return to Ladera.

We were slightly disappointed with our stay at Ladera Resort. Mind you, my husband and I love the outdoors. Although the grounds were amazing and the views were spectacular, we weren't impressed with the room that we got. We booked the lowest-class room (still $300 a night, nothing else included), and there was a tree obstructing our view (Suite P). It was relatively small, and not that impressive.
I didn't mind the lizards, but the tree frogs at night don't let you fall asleep easily - they are really loud! We needed the netting on the bed because of flying insects, but it made it really hot. We didn't sleep well the 3 nights that we were there.
The restaurant had pretty good food, but be prepared to only eat local dishes, or their twist on American foods. The service was very slow (taking 45 minutes for a club sandwich at lunchtime) and not always accurate. It was very laid-back and relaxing and you couldn't have asked for a prettier setting, but we probably wouldn't go back. |

Five stars was not enough! Visited: August 2002 |

My wife and I visited Ladera for 4 days and found it to be perfect! Every aspect of service was top notch from welcome to checkout.
The food was out of this world. I enjoyed great steak, lamb, and even tried a barracuda filet (barracuda is very good - even to an Ohioan). The beach below the resort was beautiful with great snorkeling (free gear loaned by Ladera). While resting on the beach we were served drinks and snacks from the Hilton's nearby restaurant.
Although the rooms at Ladera only had 3 walls, the breeze truly does keep it cool. We visited in August and were never found it uncomfortably warm in our room. The bed had mosquito netting, but the breeze kept the bugs away.
Every morning was amazing. The sun rose behind the room, often resulting in rainbows arching accross the valley of ocean between the Pitons. We split our trip between Ladera and another resort up near Castries and decided that Castries was hardly worth a visit. Everything that makes St. Lucia unique lies near Ladera. Next time we will stay at Ladera the entire trip. |

We spent our honeymoon here. The food was great. Dinner came with a bottle of house wine. And at 6:00 p.m. in bar, they brought in a platter of free appetizers (sampled mussles on the halfshell, flying fish fingers, etc.)
We stayed for eight nights and truly loved it. Peter, the night bartender, was great. The staff everywhere was very pleasant and informative.
Also, the garden tour with Ray was a treat. The grounds were very lush. Food at Dasheen was fantastic. Mostly, we tried the daily specials which always changed.

We stayed here for three nights in Dec. 2001 and loved it! Make sure you get the romance package. The hotel is beautiful, food was a little different, but great. The staff was very nice and extremely helpful. The hotel rooms themselves are amazing to say the least, definitely one of the most beautiful and memorable experiences of our lives. |

We just got back from our honeymoon. We spent 3 nights here and they were a perfect start to our life together.
Views are amazing and you must visit the waterfalls, botanical gardens and volcano. The staff is very helpful and courteous. The restaurant (dinner) is not as good as it is made out to be and the prices are very high, but breakfast (continental) is very pleasurable.
I would definitely recommend Ladera to anybody who wants a romantic and secluded hideaway for any occasion.

The most romantic hideaway! Visited: October 2000 |

My wife and I had the good fortune of staying at the Ladera Resort from October 9-17 of 2000. I could not imagine a more romantic and private hideaway for a honeymoon.
First of all, the suites and villas are all spectacular, and unique. Most rooms come with a private plunge pool, and all are built in a post and beam fashion with local lumber, mostly red cedar. Not one suite or villa is exactly alike. Every room has an inspirational view of the ocean, rainforest and the towering twin Piton mountains. There was a view from every corner of our room.
Whether you are looking for an active and adventurous getaway, or a lazy and romantic vacation, Ladera can and will accommodate you.
If you are disputing where to stay in St. Lucia, there is no dispute, because there is no comparison to Ladera, or the Dasheene Restuarant, which is the island's best. Dasheene has an eclectic selection of dishes, ranging from Creole-flavored rack of lamb to oriental beef stir fry with local vegetables. The daily breakfast buffets are delicious, and most importantly, all you can eat. My wife and I made sure to have a hearty helping every morning. At breakfast you can expect an assortment of traditional dishes, all made from local fruits, vegetables and seafood.
The water at Ladera is safe to drink. Don’t waste money on bottled water. The bottled water comes from Castries of Vieux Fort, St. Lucia's biggest cities. The tap water at Ladera comes from deep within the rainforest, and is safe to drink. Trust me.
As for activities, I would recommend a rainforest hike with a Local Rastafarian named Jah I, ask the front desk to schedule you a hike with him. He has lived at the foot of Petit Piton Mountain his entire life, and has grown up in the rainforest. He is very familiar with the local flora and fauna. I would also recommend hiking the Pitons if you are in good shape and have experience hiking.
A visit to the botanical gardens is a must, as well as the mineral baths. We went deep sea fishing one day with another couple and I caught a 30 lb. barracuda. The kitchen will be happy to clean and cook your fish for you!
Don't stay anywhere else; you'll regret it!!! |

A magnificent small resort and a dream vacation. Visited: May 2000 |

Ladera was the ideal beginning of our marriage. We arrived at the airport on the south side of the island and were immediately concerned due to the desolate, dry appearance of the island. Do not let this concern you. The ride to the resort was rough due to the poor state of the roads, but it was lots of fun. When we got closer to the Ladera property the vegetation was more tropical and the scenery was gorgeous. Upon arriving at Ladera, I realized very quickly that we were somewhere very special. The lobby/office was a small beautiful building and the staff was very gracious in a very relaxed, professional way. We were taken to our room and when we opened the door the view was immediately breathtaking—literally. From the side of the resort where we arrived and go to the office we could not see that it is located on a mountain ridge overlooking the ocean. When we got into our room, all we could see were the trees, ocean, the two famous Pitons, as well as the plunge pool in our room. Just to note: the plunge pools were typically too cool to spend time in. They had heaters, but they did not heat up enough. The food at the Dasheene restaurant was world-class, as was the personal service. The view was once again spectacular. There was a barbecue one night that was very fun and we got a sense of the native cuisine. The activities include a rainforest tour with a character named Marshall (which I would highly recommend), going to the beach down the hill, the sulfur springs, etc. If you are looking for Cancun-like nightlife, please don't go to Ladera, or even St. Lucia. It's a gorgeous island with wonderful people. We will go back many times. |

My husband and I very much enoyed our stay at Ladera. The open-air rooms were wonderful and the view was magnificent. The plunge pool was nice during the afternoons, but a little chilly at night to use. You can sit under the stars looking over the ocean with the rainforest breeze coming in from the back.
The staff were so considerate and attentive. They booked everything for us even to the "down home" restaurant in town or the taxi ride.
The food at Dasheene was grand. We didn't eat anything that was not good. It was more on the expensive side, but you should definitely splurge. I suggest driving through the volcano, taking a mud bath in the mineral springs, sailing around the island, taking the rain forest tour, snorkeling, and taking the water ferry.
This was by far the best place I have ever stayed. I highly recommend it! |

I couldn't even begin to describe this resort - it was by far the best place I've stayed. The resort is nestled in the rainforest of St. Lucia with the most beautiful view of the mountains all the way down to the Caribbean.
The food is delicious, served in an open-air atmosphere and the staff makes you feel very welcome.
At the Caribbean, below (1200 feet) there is snorkeling, white sand beach, open air restaurant, swimming, water-skiing, etc. |

We honeymooned at Ladera '93. It was the most fascinating resort I had ever visited. The weather, the views, and the food at the Daschene were all simply unbelievable. Unless you have a problem with waking up to fresh coffee, bread and fruit while looking over your own part of the Carribean as a gentle rain sweeps quickly over your villa and out to sea, exposing the sun which illuminates the brilliant green of the coconut groves below....I recommend it.
As far as the wildlife in your room goes, it's minimal but if you're squeamish, it may not be for you. While showering, small frogs that live in the nooks of the rock lined shower chirp. When brushing my teeth, I noticed a very small frog had made a home under the sink stopper. Lizards of course run around as well but the fascinating thing to me was the relative lack of bugs. Maybe it was because I was there in August but the bug netting on the beds was not all that necessary. The bug netting was good at keeping the bats, however, at a distance.
At night, the light did bring in many flying bugs but frequent swoops by bats never allowed the bugs to last long. In the morning, I would watch birds fly into the villa and essentially clean up the place of any remaining bugs so that by the time your feet hit the floor, the bugs were gone.
It is a memory I will never forget. We hope to return for our 10th anniversary. |
