I had an amazing vacation at The Mercure. Visited: April 2005

My stay at the Mercure was delightful. It was a very special hotel - very European, non-commercial with a beautiful private beach.

My room had a view on the sea, with a large balcony. I liked the hotel because even if there was a lot of organized activities, it was always peaceful.

In addition, the food was absolutely delicious. The price/value was also very, very good.

The Mercure offers amazing Food, nice rooms, and a lovely beach. Visited: February 2005

My wife and I have just returned from a two-week stay at The Mercure and we had a fantastic time.

First of all, the food was the best of any inclusive vacation we have ever been on. We have been to the Dominican Republic, Mexico (twice), the Bahamas, and the Florida Keys - so we have a bit of experience.

The normal fare of bland, lifeless buffets usually has us wishing we had not gone for two weeks, but not at the Mercure. Breakfast was the only daily buffet, and it seemed obvious that the chef was allowed to sleep in. Lunch and supper were a la carte, so there was a choice of two starters and two main courses (a drink was also included).

My wife and I always tried both choices and shared. I was blown away by the flavors and care that was given in plating each meal. Not once did we have a bad meal. Even after two weeks, we were not tired of the food. Drinks were premium brands and mixed properly.

Breakfast was the only meal that was not great (at least to our normal Canadian standards). There was an egg boiling station that we used every day for soft boiled eggs. There was also scrambled eggs, but they were very, very runny. The guests from France seemed to have no problems with the runny eggs, so I would have to say that was just a cultural difference.

Also, people didn't seem to understand that they should only take the eggs they put in the boilers (as well as the toast). So we had to sort of stand guard over the toast and eggs as they boiled and toasted. Fruit, croissants and cereals were also provided, along with bacon, sausages , cheese and ham. Juice and coffee were there as well.

Once a week there was a seafood BBQ that was just amazing, as well as a weekly BBQ lunch that was the best meal we had (in my opinion). The ribs were fantastic - I went back for thirds!

Our room was very nice, but sparse. The only issues we had were the TV only had three channels, and all three were in French. So we read a few books. Luckly, I brought a laptop and some movies so that helped us to relax in the evenings.

The maid service was great, our room was always cleaned when we returned from breakfast. There was a fridge and a two-burner stove on the balcony, but the fridge was the only thing we used.
We would just use our drink tickets for beers and pop and keep our fridge stocked.

The beach at the hotel was on the lagoon or Simpson Bay. The sand was soft and cool, and palm trees and palapas were all around. We were always able to find a lounge chair, although many were cracked. The beach was very quiet and relaxing.

In addition, we rented a car and saw the island. This was the best holiday we have ever had!

Not a 3 Star Hotel Visited: April 2004
Posted by rguardascione
This hotel, while a value, lacked some basic features that otherwise would have made it a 3 star hotel. The most important one being that there are no screens on the windows, just wooden planks to open/close. Some of the planks were splintered, therefore allowing mosquitoes and other elements into the room. This was the biggest problem for me. Also, the kitchenettes were rusted and the fridge is located outside your room, allowing anyone to go into the fridge and take what they would like. Also, towels and hair dryers were not readily available, i.e. if they were out for the day, they were out and would not have more until other guests returned the items.

All in all, this hotel is more for budget-conscience spring breakers than for couple wanting to get away on a romantic holiday. We would not return to this hotel and do not recommend it.

Not a 3 Star Hotel Visited: April 2004

We just came back from our stay at this hotel. There were no reviews on-line to go by so we decided to just go with it and stay here but we would not go back to this hotel. While the staff was polite, it just wasn't what we expected out of a so called 3 star hotel. This hotel is more like a 1.5-2 star hotel.

Some reasons for my rating: There are no screens on any of the windows, the windows only open/close with wood planks - so be prepared to share your room with mosquitos; the hotel does not provide you with US electical adaptors; the hotel will only provide you with a blow dryer if one is free, i.e. meaning other guests are not using them; the housing keeping staff is not consistent in cleaning rooms; the front desk is helpful to a point but most of the time seem bothered or in a rush if you are seeking assistance; and the room's decor is very bland, almost ugly.
In all, this hotel is suited for college students/ others for just want a cheap no-frills hotel to stay in. It is not suited for couples/ singles that are looking for a romantic, nice hotel.

It was lovely, but there were a few basic comforts missing. Visited: February 2002
Posted by jekagan
The hotel had beautiful grounds, an excellent pool and a lovely beach. The food was good and was served in very pleasant airy spaces. The hotel had a relaxed family-oriented atmosphere.

The rooms were pleasant and furnished nicely, but going a bit shabby. The kitchen kits were available, but minimal.

There was no clock, soap, face cloths or tissues provided, but we would still return!

We often go over to St. Martin for just the weekend and have found this little gem.

Though it is too far to walk to Marigot, there is often a cab outside (or they will call one). The breakfasts are bountiful and the rooms very comfortable.
