It was a beautiful property, but provided bad food and service. Visited: December 2005 |

We loved the hotel and beach, but the food was only good to sometimes even lousy. And it was pricy to boot. Also, one member of our party became ill from the food.
Many of the wait staff seemed unprofessional for this type of hotel (it was what one would expect dining at a Denny's). As the island was so small, there were no other options for dining (except for Raffles, which we were told was booked).
These failings cast such a pall over our experience that we left early. We were obviously very disappointed. One bright spot was that we were not charged for leaving early, which did help. |

The roar of the ocean (post tsunami) took a bit to get used to at night. The hotel was about 50 yards from the ocean.
The food was fabulous! We enjoyed fresh fish for lunch and dinner. And there were pasta choices that I have never heard of! Desserts were prepared in great combinations that just melted in our mouths. They also had appetizers that could be a whole meal each were an equally wonderful gastronomical delight. In addition, the wine was out of this world (Italian).
The staff was very nice. We were left alone to do as we pleased. Guests were very safe. |

Tamarind Is Good; But Don't Go as Airline is Too Iffy Visited: November 2004 |

We just came back from 10 days on Canouan in November, and stayed at both the Tamarind and Raffles. Raffles is a Top-Notch facility that is comparible with other Caribbean resorts that we have stayed at (Caneel Bay, Little Dix Bay, and Four Seasons, Nevis). The Tamarind is not bad for the lower price. The beach and water quality at Tamarind is no where near that of the Raffles shoreline. However, we would strongly discourage anyone from going to Canouan as the American Eagle Flights in and out have tons of problems. There are plenty of other resorts of similar quality in the Carribbean that you don't have to deal with the unpredictability and stress of American Eagle.
American Eagle has a near monopoly at Canouan. The planes they use to go in there are subject to something called a "weight restriction" and can never take off or land at dark. This weight restriction means that they can only fly with a partially filled plane, and only part of your luggage. However, American Eagle continues to sell tickets as if they did not have this weight restriction issue. What this means is that American Eagle will more often then not leave passengers in either Puerto Rico or Barbados until a later days flight. Also, getting out of Canouan, one faces a similar situation. However, you never know until the very last minute if you are getting a boarding pass or not. Luggage is a secondary priority for Am. Eagle -- Don't pack anything that you actually need in your luggage; because chances are it won't catch up to you until later in your vacation.
The Terminal at Canouan (I guess you can call it a Terminal) is a tiny open air facility that is loaded with musquitos. The terminal sits by itself next to standing wet lands, and there were 6 to 8 musquitos per square yard every where in that facility. Standing in line is one thing, standing in line while you are being ate alive is quite another. American Eagle has hired what appear to be just a few locals to run their Canouan Airport operations. The locals don't have any customer service skill set, and appear just simply untrained to search American Eagle's system for lost luggage...And connecting flights, forget about it.
Bottom line: As great as Raffles is (and as ok as Tamarind is), don't do it. When one is on vacation the last thing they need is the headaches of American Eagle Canouan (and you will experience them if you go). There are plenty of other quality destinations that you don't have the problems associated with them. |

This is the perfect getaway spot! Visited: December 2003 |

Tamarind is the perfect place if you don't want the usual crowded Caribbean vacation. If you are looking for seclusion combined with great and friendly service, this is the place you want.
The beach is cozy and secluded. The rooms are also very nice. The food is not that great, but the rest of the place makes up for it. Watch those mosquitoes - each room comes with a can of Off spray and you will need it. |

This is a wonderful hotel. The rooms are lovely, and just steps away from the fabulous beach. in addition, the service is great. This is a great island to escape everyday life, but don't expect much shopping or dining choices. It is perfect, however, to get away from it all. |
