When we had the nerve to even try and complain about our stay, the owners/management of this place were bloody rude and threatened to try and strand us on the island. The Firefly Mustique claims a "relaxed and friendly house party atmosphere"!
We booked with them on the understanding that our holiday would be perfect - and at just under $1,000 per day, we expected perfection.
The hotel staff had been instructed to call guests by their names, presumably to personalize the service. This backfired, it might have been welcoming if they had not called each of us by the other's surname. They had an email with our correct names for the local air ticket, so there was no excuse for this.
They would often only say 'hello' to the male half of a couple even if both of us were there, as if somehow the man was more important. This was particularly insulting and old fashioned.
We had gone to celebrate an anniversary, and had told them we wanted privacy that day. At eleven o'clock they were banging on the door and calling to us. Later, they claimed that we had been rude to them over this intrusion into our privacy.
We expected a casual, relaxed, and friendly atmosphere. This was not the case. For most of the day, the bar was dead quiet with the occasional couple playing the sort of board games you might have resorted to during a power cut.
However, at about 7:00 pm most nights, loud cries of " whoop , whoop " , " yeaahh" and shrieking girly laughter could be heard from some distance away. It sounded like they were having the sort of drinking games usually associated with students or sports clubs - good for bar profits but hardly sophisticated.
We expected in such a place that nothing would be too much trouble, yet when we asked for a small problem to be solved (i.e. for some apparently clean, but stinking bed linen to be changed), this was met with resentment and bad feeling.
On departure, the owners were unnecessarily verbally abusive and rude, which completely staggered and upset us. Unfortunately, that will be our lasting memory of this idyllic getaway. |

The Firefly truly lived up to expectations about being an experience. It was almost like staying at someone's gorgeous villa but with total pampering.
From the exquisite accommodation and great food to the gorgeous views and the delightful staff, this small hotel was tops! It was truly one of the most unusual, romantic and delightful places to stay in the Caribbean. |

My husband and I spent a week at the Firefly for our honeymoon and found it to be the most romantic place on earth! From the moment our seaplane landed on the tiny island, we were blown away by its beauty.
The Firefly was picturesque nestled on the side of a cliff with the most incredible views of the ocean. All of the guest rooms overlooked the ocean and were beautifully decorated with Caribbean antiques, including four-poster beds with mosquito netting.
The friendly couple who own the Firefly made us feel very welcome, while the wonderful staff catered to our every need. The open- air restaurant was fabulous and extremely romantic day or night with fantastic views of the island’s lush landscape and turquoise ocean.
The food was superb and the menu offered many tasty choices. We even had a choice of eating dinner in the dining room or having a private dinner under the stars by the garden’s lagoon pool. We also had a choice of where to have lunch - either by the pool or a picnic lunch on the beach, which the wonderful staff would bring us.
The island of Mustique was enchanting, and a wonderful place to just unwind. We would spend the entire day just the two of us on a beautiful deserted beach, exploring the island in our mule, or lounging by the Firefly’s amazing pool.
In the evening after dinner, we would either bring a bottle of champagne down to the beach, or go to the one bar on the island, which had a great Reggae band. Staying at the Firefly made our honeymoon so special and I would highly recommend it to anyone. |

The previous review covered the amenities well; so I would like to add a few impressions of my own.
When on Mustique, I usually take a house for longer stays, but I have lived at the 'Fly for shorter stays. In any case, it's our hangout when on the island.
It's one of those romantic places one hopes to find, but usually remains elusive. I don't only mean "romantic" in the lovey-dovey or honeymoon sense, though Firefly is certainly great for
all of that; but also in the sense of adventure, beauty and a certain rugged tropical outpost character all its own, tinged with mystery and mystique.
The Claytons are very honest in their brochure with their "truthful asides". Firefly isn't for everyone: children under 12, those who may have disability issues, or those who may be bothered
by the usual revelry at the bar, late into the night.
Firefly is like a private club to which all are made to
feel welcome and included. Even on your first visit, you are made to feel as if you were an old Mustique hand. I think if Firefly had been around during Hemmingway's time, he would have holed
up there to write a novel or two. It's that kind of place.
Finally, there are the resident cats. What special pals they are! Four good friends which make the bar even cozier.
With all of its beauty, comfort and wonderful accommodations, one needs never venture out to the rest of the island, but one should. The Firefly maintains a fleet of "mules" for the quests and
will provide picnics for the beach. All meals and the "mules" are included in the price of the rooms which makes for a vacation of such incredible value.
I've given it a 5-star rating because that was the top limit. If ten stars were offered, that still wouldn't be enough. |

If you want to visit one of the most beautiful, private and incredibly safe islands in the world, go to Mustique. And if you're lucky, when you are here you can stay in one of the 4 rooms at one of the most romantic hideaways in the Caribbean...The Firefly.
The owners and staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. The atmosphere, all-around, is "relaxed luxury." The bar and restaurant are on the main floor and are entirely open-air. The furniture in the large bar area is reminiscent of Casablanca and invites you to lounge, and lounge and lounge.
The views that (from nearly every vantage point at the Firefly) venture down a wooded hillside to the sea are incredible. The restaurant at the Firefly serves up amazing food for breakfast, lunch and dinner (the menu changes nearly every night).
Each room is uniquely designed and decorated, most with romantic 4 poster beds and mosquito netting. All rooms have ocean views.
The grounds and inn are impeccably kept. The pools cascade down the hillside and are extremely inviting. There are many hidden 'nooks' to find a private place to sit. Because the Inn has only 4 rooms, you will never feel crowded. But when you want to socialize, the bar at the Firefly is usually buzzing (other alternatives are Basil's bar down on the water and on Monday's there is a cocktail party at the Cotton House).
Although the Firefly itself is not on a beach, you have several to choose from, and a 'mule' (a glorified golf-cart) is the best way to get around. The beaches are beautiful, the water is crystal clear and, most of the time, you will be able to enjoy your stretch of sand in complete privacy.
If you're looking for island beauty, privacy, comfort and relaxation the Mustique Firefly is the place to go. |

| The Firefly is the only inn on the private island of Mustique. Once a villa, it was transformed into a unique 5-bedroom hotel a few years ago. This combination of a cliff house and tree house perches on the side of a steep hill and cascades down to two... |
