My wife and I returned today from spending four nights at the Tropikist. We needed a getaway and I chose the Tropikist from a friend's recommendation. It was our first time in Tobago (believe it or not, we are locals and it was our first time here). We used the opportunity to explore the island and relax.
I chose the all-inclusive option as I did not want to have to worry about finding food. It worked out well for us. Breakfast, although very basic, was still varied. I guess they work with what they can afford. Lunch was always the same. Dinner was tasty, but lacked variety. It was always either fish or chicken. This hotel had an excellent, priceless restaurant overlooking the ocean, and should use this to their advantage and make some money off it. However, the owner seems reluctant to spend money.
The pool was very nice and relaxing. It was good for us. The room was comfortable and clean. It lacked furnishings. The beds also really need to be changed. Where have you seen wooden beds in the world? Don't the owners travel or stay in other hotels? |

Management seems to be totally ignorant of customer service. It appears they just do not care!
The rooms need upgrading. It was not a clean environment at all.
The food (breakfast in particular) was equal to a fast food restaurant on a side street.
There were a few pleasant employees on site, but most did not seem care to serve or please.
Never again will I stay here. Never. |

After much pestering from my younger child to go to Tobago on vacation, we ended up at the Tropikist.
It was beautifully located, and had all the trimmings of a great hotel. However, the owners seem to lack vision and the ability to spend money. They really need to update this hotel, as this can become a premier hotel in Tobago because of its layout and location.
The manager, Sammy, was a really great guy who seemed to work very hard and is really dedicated to his job.
The staff was great and tried to help in what way they could. You couldn't fault them, yet most people seem to blame them. What can they do on a limited budget? It is up to the owners to spend the money on quality food and drinks. Remember, the manager operates on what he can afford on his budget.
Our meals were good. We enjoyed our time here, and, most importantly, the children enjoyed their vacation.
So, to the owners of Tropikist... spend some money on the hotel, you are sitting on a gold mine. |

We are Trinis by birth living in the USA. We choose the Tropikist after searching for hotels in Tobago, as we really wanted to visit Tobago with our families.
The Tropikist was very willing to accommodate our large family, and we were happy to get poolside rooms. We spent all day in the larger pool. It was really nice for the children, getting to awaken each day and see and hear the ocean is priceless.
Thank you to all the staff at the Tropikist for an enjoyable stay. |

I must admit, we are Trinidadians. We visited the Tropikist hotel last month and we truly had a fantastic time.
The hotel was on the beach front, which made it the ideal place to be. It was nestled in lush gardens and a truly Caribbean setting. They had two pools, which the children enjoyed!
For us adults, we just spent the time relaxing. The meals were good, truly enjoyable, and the drinks were really refreshing.
You can't fault the staff. They were a nice bunch of people. Sam, the manager, was a great guy. He always had time for some "ole talk" as we Trinis say. Thanks tropikist. We will be back |

It was paradise. Visited: February 2009 |

Having just returned from spending a fantastic week in Tobago, I am still reeling from my holidays in the sun..or should I say paradise. Tobago is untouched and unspoiled - just the way we like our vacation paradise to be.
The people at the Tropikist were truly unique in their own way, but really friendly. If you just ask them a question, they are more than happy to respond. If they don't know, they will ask everyone until they get an answer for you!
What is nice, though, is that they seem like one big happy family. Mr. Samaru is doing a fantastic job. The owners of the hotel should really invest some cash into the property. However, the staff was lovely, the meals and drinks were nice, and there was a lovely pool.
Go to the Tropikist, relax, and enjoy yourself. Enjoy Tobago, and stop complaining about minor things. |

My wife and I spent seven lovely days here. We came here for the Christmas/ New Year holidays, and we had a truly lovely time.
We had a huge room, with a balcony and a nice view of the ocean. It was so refreshing to wake up every morning and have a view of the ocean, and listen to the waves crash on the cliff and the birds sing. It was so lovely.
We enjoyed the cocktails. All the staff was very friendly and helpful. We could not fault them. Sammy, the manager, was really nice. We did not need to complain, but he was very hard working and was always around to make sure everything was okay. In our experience, all those negative reports on him are not true. We never saw him abuse any staff in front of the guests, nor was he rude to any guest.
In addition, we had no problems with the food. In fact, at dinner we found the food was too much. During our stay, there was no food shortage. If it was low, the chefs would advise it was low, and they would re-stock everything.
Our room was cleaned daily, and we had clean towels each day.
The Tropikist is not a five-star accommodation, and Mr. Sam is a ten-star man. |

I booked a five-night stay at the Tropikist without reading the reviews about the hotel, and this turned out to be a big mistake. The grounds of the resort were reasonably kept, and its location was excellent (close to the airport and Store Bay). However, these apart, my holiday at the Tropikist was completely disappointing.
My wife and I spent six days at this hotel (including Christmas day), and found the experience extremely unpleasant. We had to deal with the unfriendly attitude of some of the staff, the limited lunch menu, the poor maid service, and the aged appearance of the buildings. Add to these, the horrible attitude of the resort's manager, Mr. Ram Samaroo.
Apart from shouting at and insulting staff in the presence of guests, he was of no help when complaints were made directly to him. I committed the cardinal sin of complaining to him about the poor quality of food served at dinner (I was given an inedible lamb chop, all gristle and bone), and about the unannounced and arbitrary reduction in service hours for lunch on Christmas day.
I got absolutely no satisfaction from Mr. Samaroo (his idea of redress was a $120TT refund on check out). That evening, my wife and I had the experience of being rudely removed (by Mr. Samaroo) from a table assigned to us by a waitress at Christmas dinner. This was in full view of a packed and now stunned dining room.
Also, that night, items on the advertised menu ran out and no effort was made to replace them or to apologize to guests for their absence.
It would seem that with all the negative reviews that I have read about this hotel, they would be out of the hospitality business. Unfortunately for us, though, they are not and continue to take your hard earned money and give extremely poor service in return.

My wife and I stayed at the Tropikist at the end of November. This hotel was truly unique. It was not like a major hotel chain. It had character and ambiance of its own.
The staff was friendly and helpful. Remember, if you are friendly with them they will return the favor. Just try and be nice, speak to them politely, and they will give you the world. We even got a free upgrade to a deluxe room.
The front staff was extremely helpful, and we can't fault them. Mr. Samaroo was excellent, always helpful, and always there. Please disregard the negative comments. I have not seen him in any rooms. He has a team of people to do the work.
The food was excellent. We got hot fresh food daily, and the rooms were cleaned. We can't fault the hotel or its staff. But don't go expecting five star for the price you pay at this hotel. |

After booking in the hotel, the manager was always in my room. His reasons were - making sure the guests were happy, or checking the hot-cold temperature.
I believe the man is mad. |

We have just returned from a 14-night stay at Tropikist. This is my third year staying here.
You have to understand - it is a three-star hotel, and any travel company that indicates anything different are sharks.
This aside, the staff - Mr. Samaroo (hope you're feeling better), Larry and Ali, plus all the girls - will go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. Be aware that if you smile and are pleasant, you will make reap the rewards, if you treat the staff with contempt - you can expect it back. |

I am not one to normally post reviews on the Internet, as I feel sometimes these reviews are skewed and most times really forms a persons own bias view.
My husband and I returned from a one-week vacation from the Tropikist Hotel. Most travelers go to the Tropikist (and this in my opinion is unfair to the hotel) with a mind set of what not to expect, after reading all the negative comments.
Some reviews depicted Mr. Sam (the general manager) in a negative light. However, I found this young man to be a gem. He seemed very hardworking, and worked long hours. Also, nothing seemed to be a problem for this man. All you have to simply do is meet with him, explain your situation and he would try his best to solve it.
Keep in mind, he has limited resources to work with. The hotel is a family owned and operated entity, so there is little he can really do. However, this man works hard. I hope his employers see that.
The hotel itself was a bit tired, and needs some cosmetic surgery (Sam said work would commence soon). The room we had (room 87) had a lovely view of the gardens and the ocean, and from the balcony we could see Sammy working early in the morning - around 5 am.
The staff was fantastic. Most important, they all have a heart! |

My husband and I returned from staying at the Tropikist Beach Hotel, and we had a wonderful time.
The hotel setting was just fabulous; the food was excellent; and the service was top of the line. I am shocked at the last reviews posted against the manager. He was such a nice person. He treated all the guests professionally, and his employees even better. No staff member was ill treated, and all staff members had high praise for him.
Please disregard those negative comments. Go enjoy your stay. The hotel is a bit tired, but the staff is fantastic. Do enjoy your holiday! |

I spent two nights at the hotel, and I met the manager. He treated his employees horribly - and in front of the guess at the hotel.
My AC was not working, so an employee came to check it out. Mr Samaroo came in and started to insult his staff. The staff is great, but the manager will cause a lot of people to leave that hotel. |

We were part of a large group of locals that just visited the Topikist Beach Hotel for the first time, and we truly enjoyed our time here.
We would normally stay at other locations on the island. As being local Trinis, all we wanted was a place to rest our heads as we would be out all day. We never chose the Tropikist Beach before as we really were not aware of it. Also, we always heard it was expensive, but not good.
We booked through a friend, who knows the manager Mr. Samaroo, so we all got the all inclusive package at a very good rate.
The hotel is well laid out, and nice for relaxation. Being the holidays, it was busy and hectic (as well as a bit noisy with all the children and all). However, without the children, I am sure it would be nice for relaxation.
Mr. Samaroo usually works very long hours to ensure that the hotel works like a well oiled machine, and he is getting there. The staff, we all found, was extremly nice and helpful, and nothing was a problem for Mr. Samaroo. He was always there to help us.
The hotel is very nice, and our rooms was very spacious and cleaned every day. The chamber maid was always on hand to have a chat with us while she cleaned. All the staff helped out in whatever way they could.
I am definitely going to be returning to the Tropikist, and will be taking along friends with me now! |

Forget the negative reviews. Visited: July 2008 |

We recently returned from staying here. Forget the negative reviews. All the guests holidaying here with us had good things to say.
The hotel was drab looking, and could do with a brighter face. However, the service could not be beat. It was five-star service. Ali and Alyson in the bar were great. The front desk girls were excellent, and the house keeping staff did a really good job of keeping our room clean.
Sam, the manager, was great, and will attend to your complaint - even if you catch him running down the corridor (yes, we all asked him what he runs on, it cannot be vitamins alone!).
The food we got was really nice. It reflected the local taste, and breakfast was not half bad.
I would recommend the Tropikist, as it is value for money. But don't go complaining as you reach. Give them an inch - they are trying with what they have. |

We had a great time here at the Tropikist Hotel. Don't believe all the bad reviews.
Yes, the hotel was a bit run down and needs updating. However, the value for your money is good. A new manager, Sam, has now taken over the running of the hotel, and change cannot happen overnight. Any complaints you may have, he is willing to sort for you.
The bar staff was great - especially Alison and Ali. They served with a smile, and interacted with guests.
The hotel had two swimming pools, but nothing else. The food was a full English breakfast, snacks at lunch. The evening meal had quite a lot of spices, which we loved. However, if you don't eat spices, you may struggle a bit. Larry was the chef here, and he was a great guy and always smiling.
The hotel had very little entertainment at night, and the bar closed at 10:30 pm, so don't expect a night life. The area was dead at night.
Unfortunately, although the hotel had a beachfront, you cannot go in the sea here due to the coral reef. However, Store Bay is only around the corner, and Pigeon Point is a 15 minute walk.
The hotel was very close to the airport, but as there were only a few planes landing and taking off all day. It did not cause a problem.
Thanks to all at Tropikist. Our holiday was great, and we met some wonderful holidaymakers here, too. |

Reconsider if you plan to stay at the Tropikist. Visited: April 2008 |

I had read all the reviews of hotels on the island of Tobago here. Of them all, our tour operator decided on the Tropikist as it was the only hotel close to the airport that was a great deal - or so we thought.
We arrived, and yes, it was close to the airport - very close. It was next to the landing strip.
The overall look of the hotel was like taking a step back in time. The hotel was run down and faded, and could do for a good coat of paint. The hotel's sign was falling apart, and was very tacky.
The receptionists were welcoming - and about the only people at the hotel who were friendly. The maids were okay, but they didn't talk much. They would not speak if you didn't speak to them. The bar staff, by far, was the most rude of all. The restaurant staff appeared as if they were doing us a favor at serving us.
The rooms, I must admit, all had nice views of the ocean. Also, they all had balconies or patios, which was very nice. The beds were old and dated, and need to be updated or changed. The fridge was a small, very old piece of equipment that didn't really work and only made noise. It was rusted, to say the least, and I was afraid of opening it in fear of getting infected - not to mention the health issues.
The shwower needs a proper cleaning, and there was limescale build up on the faucets and fixtures. The door didn't work, and most guests said they didn't even lock.
The restaurant was not organized properly, and it didn't help to complain. I suggest you just avoid this hotel. |

This was truly a magical hotel. I spent last Easter here with my family, and it was the best ever.
They served great food, and we received top-of-the-line service and respect all the way. Service was at our finger tips.
You should definitely check it out once you are in Tobago. |

I could elaborate at length about our how bad our experience was at the Tropikist, but we discovered that someone had already stated it more eloquently by etching a few words into the drawer of the bedside table: “This is the worst hotel ever. Good luck here.” |
