This was a great hotel, and Tobago was beautiful. Visited: October 2007 |

We stayed at Turtle Beach for one week. We had a fantastic time.
The staff was lovely, and the food was very good. I have a husband who is very fussy with his food, but each day he went back for more.
The rooms were a bit dated, but they were okay for a three-star accommodation.
We went out in a taxi, which was very cheap. We saw most of the island. What a lovely island!
We will visit again one day. |

We have just returned from our second stay at Turtle Beach (the first was in 2003), and found (thankfully!) that very little had changed. The new pool area was attractive and unobtrusive and left even more space on the beach - which was our preferred location for relaxation.
The beach vendors were far more friendly, polite and less pushy than I remembered. We were happy to buy souvenirs from them, and hopefully give something to the local economy. My daughter had a manicure, and bought a handbag from the local craftsmen; Mary gave an excellent massage; my son bought a hand painted tee- shirt from Kerri; and my wife purchased a sarong from Lorna. The incomparable carvings by the charismatic Reuben are also an essential part of Turtle beach's character.
We thought the food was excellent on our previous stay, and this time it was even better with a wide choice dishes at every meal.
Having stayed previously, we sent an e-mail ahead of our visit to request room style and location. We received a prompt and helpful response from Paulette. There were also a few pleasant 'surprises' over the two weeks we stayed, as we were repeat visitors.
We've read in various reviews that some people found the staff rude at times. Our take on this is that in the UK, you get used to staff being trained to be polite at all times. In Tobago - and frankly most other countries - people show their true feelings more.
If you are friendly and polite to the hotel employees, you usually get a genuine smile in return and friendly comments. Very occasionally staff are offhand, but don't take it personally, they're just having a bad day. Overall, we thought the hotel was very efficiently run with dedicated, cheerful and very helpful staff and management.
Regarding the local tour operators, it pays to shop around and seek the opinion of other guests who have been on trips. We were particularly keen to observe and learn about the local wildlife and found Peter Cox exceptional. Other tours take you to similar places, but you literally won't know what you've missed until you go out with Peter.
We also took a trip with Kelton, who was great fun and knowledgeable. The trip includes his collection of captive birds of prey in some of his tours.
Turtle Beach may not be the most luxurious hotel on the island, but it provided us with all the requirements we needed for another wonderful holiday. We will certainly come back. |

I enjoyed this over 50s all-inclusive. Visited: January 2007 |

On my fourth visit to Tobago, I stayed two weeks at the Rex Turtle for the first time. I was concerned about our first all-inclusive experience, but our extras bill was so small because it was definitely all-inclusive. That included drinks- alcohol or soft drinks - all day.
The three meals a day included eggs cooked any way while you watched for breakfast, meats, or fish freshly caught from close to the hotel. There were lots of choices.
They had the best natural hotel beach on Tobago. The sea needs care at certain tide times, though. The newish large pool with a swim up bar had a good children's pool, also. There were lots of sitting space. It was easy to sit where it was quiet on the beach.
I suggest a car hire to explore the island, and have lunch at Sharon and Phebs.
Yes, the hotel was a bit tired- like Tobago, and there were small problems which became irrelevant in the overall context.
It was just three minutes from bed to sea, which was magic. I suggest you go for a first or second floor room for the view and seurity.
They are refurbishing constantly- which is needed!
Sun chairs could be a problem - they said more were on order. Natiowide- there were no charges, and the cash machine worked well.
Why did such a busy hotel work for us? The general manager, Leslie Amedee, was constantly seen in the restaurant, on the beach and around the pool, and at reception supervising in a quiet way. Leslie was always available if needed.
This is a great place to unwind and relax, and it's a real value for money. |

Turtle Beach exceeded our expectations. Visited: July 2006 |

THe staff here made us not want to go home. Normally when we travel, we usually can't wait to return home. That was not the case on this occasion.
Our expectations were definitely exceeded. We will be back for sure. |

Yes, the rooms are in need of a makeover. However, we spent most of the time out of room and on the beach (among other outdoor activities).
Some staff were very helpful and friendly, but many were unfriendly and unhelpful. The pool bar always seemed to be under staffed and unwelcoming.
Overall, the location and island made up for poor staff attitude we encountered. We will be returning to see the rest of this beautiful island and enjoy watching turtles again at this ideal location. |

Tobago is a very beutiful island with a sparkling blue ocean and wonderful wildlife. Rex Turtle Beach Hotel is on the beach and has very rare leatherback turtles nearby.
Also, the staff is friendly, the pool is clean, the food is wonderful and there's a swim-up bar. What more could you ask for? |

The beach is one of the nicest on the island. The staff is most friendly, and the food is interesting and fine. The rooms are okay.
We love it! |

We found this hotel to be poor with late servicing of rooms so that often, there were no fresh towels even by teatime.
Everything looked scruffy, the main complex smelled of frying food, and the food itself looked most unappetizing. Car parking was like a bomb site - Lord help you in the rainy season!
The staff did their best, but seemed unable to answer the numerous complaints we saw people making during our week-long stay.
The rooms were like chalets. This place is best avoided, in my opinion. |

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Turtle Beach. They provided good food, and a lovely pool and bar area.
The rooms were clean, yet in need of a paint job. However, you don't go to Tobago to stay in the room.
We are planning our next trip here for Easter. |

We have stayed at many a rex hotels in Antigua and St. Lucia. But we have never suffered the "hotel from hell" until we arrived at the Turtle Beach in Tobago.
We came here as a party of six - four adults and two children. The rooms were dark and dirty. The furniture was broken, and the toilets were leaking. Also, one of the children's beds had no bedding, and my son's bed was coated with dead and live ants. This was a superior room we stayed in, too!
The staff was mostly rude to us (with a few nice ones dotted in between). We had to repeatedly ask if we could have our room cleaned as it hadn't after a week.
Also, the children went without meals after they had been ordered, and we were constantly ignored at the table when awaiting our food or drinks orders. In addition, items were stolen from both parties' room resulting in one of the chambermaids be sacked. The list goes on.
I have written my letter of complaint to the hotel. I cannot understand why this hotel is listed as a three-star resort as it was nothing short of a dirty motel.
Tobago, on the whole, was a beautiful country to visit. But I thought this hotel was a major let down for the country. Please don't take this review lightly - as I did when I read some of the other reviews. If I had taken the reviews seriously, I would never have stayed here. I will never return to the Turtle Beach Resort. |

In the last two years, I have stayed at this hotel twice with my husband and two children (teens), and have booked another stay July 2006.
Although I have stayed in many five-star hotels all over the world and the Rex Resort is quite basic in comparison, I can't help but keep coming back to this hotel and its location. The rooms open directly onto the beach, the locals are very friendly. Also, nothing could be better than watching the leatherback turtles nest right in front of your bedroom door!
I have teenage children who love the sea and watersports, and they love this hotel. It has always been fairly quiet when we have visited, and yes, it needs a refurb. However, on the whole we love it as it offers very good value for money in an unspoiled location.
The food is very good, and the all inclusive option is a must. The entertainment is enjoyable, too. The service can be slow at times, but they do have some regular dedicated staff.
I have always felt safe at this hotel despite it being on a public beach. They have 24-hour security, and I can happily travel around Tobago on my own with the kids without feeing uncomfortable. |

This is the best hotel beach on Tobago. Visited: March 2004 |

We just returned from Rex Turtle Beach and were pleasantly surprised after getting some unsettling and often untrue information on the internet (go figure).
We arived at the Trinidad airport at 2:00 am and almost all the stores and restaurants (fast food) were open all night! It was so full of people that we felt no fear just staying there rather than going to the hotel for two hours and coming right back.
We arrived at Crown Point airport in Tobago after a 15-minute flight and after a 15-minute taxi ride (12$ us), we were at the resort. Check-in was at 3:00 pm, but they had us in the room in 30 minutes (8am).
The first thing we saw was the pool - it was not small at all! Even though Rex's own website made it look small. Rooms were basic and bathrooms needed to be gutted, but our door opened to the best beach on the island (we saw every one accesible by car).
Food was good, buffet changed every day, a la carte did not. Service was slow at first, but if you were polite to them they got to know you and were great.
Speaking of polite, I don't know what was up, but a lot of the Europeon guests (everyone was German or English but us) were horribly rude! People cut in line, stole my toast, took my beach chair while we were at lunch (book and towel were on chair). The bar was understaffed and there was always a wait-people would walk up and see you waiting and try to cut in front! I have been to Europe many times and never saw such behavior!
Anyway-If you are a beach person this is the place. We visited the other resorts that had horrible beaches or no beach at all.
Scuba Diving was horrible on this side while we were here. I do not reccomend World of Watersports as they took us out 50 yards from shore to the worst vis ive ever seen. They didn't want to use any fuel even though they charged over $80 us for two tanks! The good diving was at Speyside, but the western shops charged $25 per person to take you there in a bus. You are better off getting a car and driving yourself.
I hope this helps someone. And watch your beach chair! |

This hotel is in need of a major upgrade, however this was the most relaxing and chilled-out holiday we have had abroad.
The staff was excellent and as helpful as possible. The food was varied and always of a high standard. The pool was very small but when you have the Caribbean Sea on your doorstep, who needs a pool?
I would not recommend the Rex Turtle Beach for children as apart from kayaking and snorkling, there was not a great deal to do outdoors. There was a TV room where they could go on the internet and play ping pong and board games, but apart from that there was no other childrens' entertainment.
Jemma's Kitchen was well worth a visit for the views and again, for the great food. If you are not staying All-Inclusive, you will certainly need to hire taxis or a car/jeep on a regular basis if you want to eat outside the hotel. A strong insect repellent is advised as the local insect life is plentiful and hungry.
We would certainly return to Tobago again, and only to the Rex Turtle Beach, but only after the planned refurbishment has been completed. This really was the best locaion on the island (ask the locals). |

We had a wonderful time in Tobago. This hotel was basic, but clean, and the staff was wonderful.
Seva, the the lady who greeted guests in her colorful outfit, was the best. You could not ask for a nicer person. She certainly did a good job making us feel at home.
I would definitely come back to this hotel I felt right at home. Also, the many other people who were staying at the Rex had stayed before, and said they would come again. |

I have just returned from the Rex Turtle Beach. I thought it was a really lovely hotel on a pretty beach.
The food was suprisingly good for an all-inclusive, and the menu changed almost every day for two weeks. The rooms were basic, but perfectly nice.
The only complaints I would have, would be that the swimming pool was really tiny, and the staff in the restaurant was bad tempered. |

I just returned from my stay at Rex Turtle Beach. I couldn't have asked for more friendly or accommodating staff.
The rooms were not luxurious, but they were roomy and clean. They had air conditioning, and the bed was very comfortable.
We were hassled a little on beach by "beach traders" - but if you give as good as you get, they will go away. If you want any trips by taxi, ask for Idris (pronounced EEDRIS). She was a superb, mature, lady taxi driver based at the hotel. She was marvelous. Also, she was more inexpensive than the packaged tours to visit local sights were.
Two couples got married at the hotel while we were here. It seemed to be a marvelous, memorable place for them. We loved the quaintness and rustic feel to the hotel. It was very cozy. |

Rex Turtle Beach hotel has nice spacious rooms with air-conditioning.
The beach is nice and clean, but the water can be cloudy with sand for a while after a storm.
The hotel is due to be refurbished in early 2003, and I would definitely consider returning to the Rex in Tobago. |
