We encountered false advertising, filthy conditions and rude service. Visited: July 2005
Posted by chamaur
We recently visited Tobago for a church convention for the summer of 2005. We spent about 12 days in Tobago. Our experience on Tobago was not a very welcoming one.

We were a group of 15 members. We stayed at the Della Mira Guesthouse in Scarborough. Before coming to Tobago we did some research online in trying to find guesthouses. Based on the information provided by Della Mira, they mentioned many facilities and amenities that were not existent on the property. We in the United States, we call this "fraudulent advertising".

When we got to the guesthouse, the lady who greeted us, Mrs. Miranda, was very rude to us. Many of the amenities and facilities mentioned on the internet were not there, either. We brought the whole matter to her attention and she dismissed our concern. But she still decided to keep our security deposit.

The other guesthouses in the surrounding areas were booked based on the weekend race event happening in Tobago. The group coped with the situation and tried to make the best out of it.

We found the place to be just very filthy and not maintained properly. The pool had mold on the bottom and many paint chippings. Three of us (including myself) got sick from this. The air conditioners had dirty (or no) filters, this made a few of the girls cough while sleeping. None of the doors had good "working" normal door locks. In addition, at night, we had to watch our heads for the bats, because the ceiling had such a huge rotten hole it was infested with bats.

The young people of our group had worked very hard in raising money to fund the cost of the guesthouse. Many activities were performed for fund raisers including: bake sale, car wash, petitions for donations from various companies and organizations, sporting events, and concerts.

The amount spent for the guesthouse, transportation, food, airfare, and miscellaneous expenses were about $11,000.00. We spent all that money in Tobago and all we got was bad treatment and a guesthouse that was filthy and run down.

I am very disappointed in Tobago. For all the effort we made in getting down there and spending so much money, our experience was an unpleasant one. A "vote of thanks" will not be given to Tobago until this problem is solved.

Down at heel and expensive. Visited: June 2001

This hotel is really not a good value. The rooms’ interiors are really dark brown colors and down at heel. The swimming pool looks like it hasn't been cleaned for ages, though at a closer look it just needs paint. The sea views are okay though.
