Asa Wright Nature Center and Lodge was simply wonderful. It was comfortable, without being luxurious. All that was done, was done with a view to the well being of the guests and the welfare of the environment.
The staff was excellent; the food was delicious; the accommodations were very comfortable and very clean; and the knowledge of birds and plants exhibited by the staff was impressive.
I was with a group of birders traveling through Caligo Ventures, and everyone of us wants to return. I was in cottage close to the main house, and really liked it.
This is a place to return to. The birding guides, Roodal and David, were just unbelievably good. Murkesh was also excellent. |

A glimpse into the Garden of Eden. Visited: February 2003 |

This was likely the most serene and beautiful setting we have ever visited. A rainbow of birds outside the old plantation “porch” and comfortable chairs in the sitting area made it difficult to stay awake in the afternoon.
We were lucky enough to get one of the two rooms in the old building with 16’ high ceilings and antique furniture. There was no view from the room, but the bird viewing area was only about 50’ barefoot walk to the rear of the old 1908 home.
The floors were wooden and creaked until the foot traffic died down around 9:00 pm, but that was all part of the atmosphere. The aroma of cooking at 5:00 am sometimes told our stomachs to give us an early wake up call. It was up at 6:00 and to bed each night at 8:00 pm. A nature video was shown before bedtime by the very attentive staff.
All the other rooms were in modern concrete in outer lying cottages. The trails were for all skill levels, but not for handicapped or those who could not climb stairs at all. Birds were to be seen everywhere and even away from the feeder frenzy, or in the wild. We were not “official” birders, but liked looking at them.
The staff and rangers were exquisite. The food was good. The price was too high, but I just hope they use it to keep improving the center. The cool natural stream supplied swimming area at the bottom of the gorge was out of the Garden of Eden.
Cokes and beer were served only during specific hours and there were no vending machines, only big thermos of ice water furnished 24 hours on porch. We attempted to manage a drink cooler using the sparse amount of ice available, because of our great soda addiction. Other beverage aficionados should also be forewarned.
We also felt sorry for the people being “rushed” in and out on a day tour, but our four days there seemed about right. We would return if back in Trinidad. |

The Asa Wright Nature Center is one of the top five serious ornithological observation resorts in the world. Serious birders ('twitchers', as our Alex calls them) seek out this place. It is 1,200ft. up in the Arima Hills, and you can see birds found nowhere else in the world - almost.
They have a great ambience in the main building - an old cocoa plantation house built in 1907-1908 by Charles William Meyer (1875-1948) for his bride Julia Mary Pouchet.
Accommodation is in several nearby out-buildings of recent construction. They were adequate enough, but our beds were noisily creaky, there was no air-conditioning and the ceiling fans were old and noisy enough to be useless for sleeping (on still October nights).
Meals were nice enough, and if you needed a packed lunch because you were out on a day-trip of your own, you had only to let them know the night before, and you would be supplied with more than you'd reckoned for (at no extra charge).
The person at their Arima office quoted me a price for two of us, but when we arrived, I discovered that what I'd been quoted was for a single. Our stay here cost me double what I had budgeted for: I was not amused!
If you're a 'twitcher', you'll be in bird heaven - I promise! If you're an eco-tourist, there are lots of organized trail walks around the expansive grounds, and day-trips to local swamps and other bird-sites on this island of 1,800 sq.miles, so you won't be bored.
This is not a place to stay for the average tourists, if only because it's off the beaten path - no telephone(only VHF for contact with their Arima Office not far away) and the only TV you'll get to watch are the nature-films shown after dinner some nights of the week.
Other nights there are interesting night-walks down the center's entrance avenue where one can observe big hairy tarantulas at a safe distance (girls cling to boys,so be prepared, fellas! -and carry your own torch, if possible).
Other tips: bring your binoculars, your camera with long tele-lens, and lots of film (or image capacity), you Wwill be needing them!
Enjoy! |

Located in the lush, cooler area of the northern range, the nature center is a must destination for birders. The veranda alone is worth hours of enjoyment, as are the trails on the property. The rooms are basic but clean and nicely secluded. The staff ios hospitable and knowledgable, and the food excellent. The center will be enjoyed by all lovers of nature. |

| The original estate house of the former coffee-cocoa-citrus plantation has been beautifully remodeled over the years as a comfortable headquarters where guests gather to watch the incredible birdlife from the fabled verandah.
