4.0 stars We loved Le Grand Courlan. Visited: June 2006
Posted by trickiewoo
We visited Tobago during the second half of June 2006, staying for two weeks. We had three rooms at Le Grand Courlan Resort and Spa. One for my wife-to-be and I, and one for her 20-year-old son. The third being shared by our respective daughters, ages 19 and 21.

All the rooms were together, and had stunning sea views. They were clean, comfortable and very well maintained throughout our stay.

The staff was, without exception, cheerful, friendly and helpful.

The highlight of our trip was our wedding. This was organized by the hotel, and turned out to be a delightful day. The setting was idyllic, on the beach. It was a small, simple service officiated by a local minister, and attended to by our children and a few friends we made during our stay. It was truly a day to remember.

My wife and our children all used the spa treatments that were offered as part of the all-inclusive package. The days soon started to revolve around assorted scrubs, rubs and manicures. All of which were a very high standard, administered by professional staff.

I ‘traded’ my spa treatments for dives with the padi accredited dive centre attached to the resort. ‘Eco divers’ provided a fantastic range of dives to suit beginners through to the more experienced adventurers. For two weeks of spa treatments, I received five free dives and one lesson to upgrade my certification. The dives were just what I imagined diving in the Caribbean should be, colorful and exciting. The staff was, again, very helpful, friendly and professional.

We took all of our meals in the resort, using both restaurants and the beach bar. Breakfast and lunch were buffet-style meals, and were always good. The evening meal was waiter service, and it was exceptional. We always looked forward to our dinner.

We had a holiday that we will all remember for a long time to come. Would we go back to Tabago? Oh, yes. Would we use Le Grand Courlan again? Definitely.

5.0 stars I had an excellent introduction to Tobago! Visited: January 2006

What an island! As a first-time visitor I have to say what a wonderful island this was (people and place).

Le Grand was a super hotel, with relaxed - yet efficient - service. There was a good choice of restaurants which were equally good - one was a buffet style, one was serviced.

There was also a nice, clean pool. It was quiet, and there were lovely fellow guests. The all-inclusive was beautifully handled –everything really was included.

I give full marks to the staff who were a delight. We had a standard garden view room which turned out to have a view of the ocean.

Well managed, this hotel suited our desire to chill out but in a friendly atmosphere where even our high standards were met.

5.0 stars Le Grand Courlan was excellent. Visited: October 2005

My wife and I stayed at the Le Grand Courlan Spa in Tobago between September 29 and October 16 (2005). It was, by far, the most enjoyable holiday we have taken.

The hotel amenities were excellent, including the spa and sport facilities, food, and swimming pool areas. The hotel rooms were first class. The management and all of the staff, with their kindness and friendliness, made it a holiday to remember.

3.0 stars We had an excellent holiday - very relaxing! Visited: April 2005

The location was perfect. The room was good - it was starting to look tired, but offered great views. The food was very good, the staff was excellent, and the entertainment was okay.

The resort itself was starting to look its age. However, regardless of that, our holiday was excellent. The hotel staff was friendly and eager to please. The spa faciity and the complimentary therapies added extra relaxation to the whole trip.

In addition, the beach beneath the hotel was wonderful.
I would recommend anyone to stay here. In my opinion, it was a three-star hotel and not four, but that was a minor point.

4.0 stars It was worth every penny (or cent!). Visited: February 2005

I was somewhat concerned by bad press in other web forums. But after two delightful weeks, I can report that the service and facilities that were provided exceeded our expectations.

The spa facility in particular compared favorably with other spa hotels in higher price brackets and could not be faulted.

The pool/poolside bar was top rate and something must be done to make the sun stay up beyond 6:00 pm!

The staff was friendly and attentive, and the quality of food and menu options were of a high standard.

Do not expect a private beach with golden sand. But, if you are a diver, do make use of Eco Divers but remember that timekeeping is not as important in Tobago as back home.

4.0 stars We had a lovely honeymoon in a beautiful country. Visited: November 2004
Posted by charlott14
I thought Le Grand Courlan Resort was a fantastic place to stay. I visited this hotel in November 2003 for my honeymoon, and had a room that overlooked the pool and the ocean. The view early on a morning was breathtaking!

The rooms were spacious, the cocktails were fantastic (but strong so beware!), and they served all named brands for the spirits. In addition, the food was great and not repetative during our two-week stay.

The entertainment was entertaining for the wrong reasons, but no-one's perfect! The staff was friendly at all times, but the bar closed at 1:00 am, which was a little early as on some nights there were many people willing to stay up past that hour.

Tobago itself was a fantastic island with friendly people and great nightlife (if you are prepared to spread your wings a little from the hotels).

I loved it here, and would recommend this resort and Tobago to anyone.

4.0 stars It was wonderful ~ but don't tell everyone! Visited: September 2004

As a lone traveler and just wanting to relax and let the world go by, 14 days just flew past for me here.

To me the staff was exemplary with the reception, restaurants and the spa areas most welcoming. The pool area had ample loungers and with either honeymooners or (like myself) the older generation, it was so peaceful and quiet. In additon to the pool bar, ice cool water was always available nearby.

There was a choice of evening meals, either the bistro or in the open air 'Pinnacle' where I found the menus and food to my liking and most enjoyable - with a bit of wine and then early retirement to my comfortable room.

During my stay, my room was situated where at 5:15 in the morning the rooster would perform his early morning call under my balcony - but I'm not complaining. There were many other little wonderful touches, so I must return for another gem holiday.

4.0 stars I cannot fault the resort. Visited: September 2004

The hotel became home for 21 great days. The staff became friends.

The resort cannot be faulted for service. The 4:oo pm cocktail drinks in the swimming pool will always be remembered.

It is a "must return" resort!

Whether you want the spa treatments, dive package or not, this is a great hotel with large comfortable rooms, a tremendous restaurant and plenty of friendly staff.

They are a little short on the beach loungers, and the centrally controlled a/c could be a little cooler. Otherwise it would merit five stars.

Premium brand drinks, decent house wine and excellent food make this a hotel to re-visit.

3.0 stars My stay here was a poor and disappointing one! Visited: February 2004
Posted by walter_z
I stayed at this hotel for two weeks, and it was not what I expected from a Caribbean jewel like Tobago. Nethertheless, it seemed to be one of the better resorts of the island as we compared it with some other hotels we visited.

Be aware that most of the rooms were situated on a hill. If you want to spend the day at the beach, make sure you do not forget anything important at the room. Otherwise, you have to "climb" 170 (counted) steps back.

Do not expect being allowed to watch sunset at the beach, because there was a gate which was closed at 6:00 pm.

There were less beds and umbrellas available at the beach because they were shared by the sister hotel. Most of the beds were ruined, so make sure you reserve them early in the morning, I would suggest 7:00 am latest. Otherwise, you do not have a chance to get a bed. But the beach was really nice, enjoy.

There was a nearly similar situation at the pool: there were plenty of beds, but only a few umbrellas. The pool was not very big, but it was clean. The toilets at the pool area could be used by men and women (not separated) and they were cleaned only once a day.

The rooms were spacious and well decorated with large balconies. The food was fine, it was better to take it at the restaurant at the upper level. There was a bistro in the lower level, where they offered buffet every evening. The food there was okay.

The garden was very disappointing because it was not treated well. Many of the plants were dying of thirst. There were no exotic plants or big banana trees.... it was just looking poor.

The spa was included in the package and it was fine. The staff here was very friendly, particulary the spa manager, whom was very helpful.

4.0 stars I never wanted to leave. Visited: October 2003

I can honestly say that I have never found it harder to come home from a holiday. My friend and I had been saving up and waiting all year for this holiday, and it was worth both the money and the wait.

The staff was wonderful. Nothing was too much trouble and they made our holiday what it was, and my photo album is full of pictures of them. A few mentions to Donny, Kendrik, Anderson, Adrain, Kelly and all the restaurant and bar staff - and especially Brent.

The pool and the bar were both lovely and I became addicted to daquiris!

It is a wonderful country and I hope it never changes. I am just waiting until I get another opportunity to visit. Anyone who would think badly of it, must expect the moon on a stick. It was my best holiday ever!

4.0 stars A top notch hotel in a wonderful country. Visited: September 2003

We have just returned from honeymooning at Le Grand Courland and can only say how pleased we were that we chose to stay here.

The room was excellent and we were fortunate to be overlooking the pool and the ocean. The service was generally good, although a little slow when they served a la carte on the occasional evening.
The pool was excellent, although I would recommend the beach to the right of the steps.

All in all, we had no complaints, but enjoyed excellent food, facilities and service. We would heartily recommend Le Grand Courland.

The hotel was great - comfortable and welcoming. The staff was very friendly and put a lot of effort into making my stay enjoyable.

The variety of food on offer made meal times a bit of a challenge and the chefs were happy to cook something different for a special meal. And, on top of this were the wonderful spa treatments. It was a great value for the money.

I am submitting on behalf of Leah Pagliara who has just returned from holiday. I am her travel agent and would just like to say I have never heard her rave about a holiday like this one...she loved it!

Leah would like to thank the staff who could not have been more curteous and helpful.

Leah has told all her salon clients (hairdresser) about your hotel - especially about the treatments which were included. Thanks again.

5.0 stars The Le Grand Courland is ace! Visited: July 2003

This hotel was fantastic. The food was excellent and the location was lovely.

Yes, the staff was a little slower than usual Caribbean standard, but why the hurry? I have stayed all over the Caribbean and I rate this hotel and holiday very highly.

The only negative was that the spa treatments were only 20 minutes long. But if that's all you have to moan about, it's not too bad!

Don't be put off by the negative reviews - unless, of course, you are expecting American- or European-standard service.

4.0 stars It was our second best holiday ever (first married in Seycelles). Visited: January 2003

We read the articles by previous holiday makers and went with an open mind. On the whole, the hotel made an effort to rectify the concerns made in the articles previously posted.

The only minor points we observed were, they needed to put the finishing touches by the pool sun loungers, they required a coat of oil and the sunbed cushions could do with repair. That said, the staff was excellent - and the food also.

We will return.

4.0 stars Le Grand Courland was in a great location and had lovely staff. Visited: December 2002

We had a lovely and relaxing holiday here and would certainly return.

The rooms could do with updating, but were clean and spacious. We had a garden room with a jacuzzi which was good fun, but the rooms were a bit dark. I think the ones with the ocean view were probably better.

The food, in both the Carribbean bistro and the Pinnacle, was good and there was plenty of variety. The hotel was fairly quiet when we were here, so the service was fine.

We really enjoyed the spa treatments, and the spa staff was very friendly.

Our one disappointment was that the beach equipment was out of use and the beach bar was closed. We spent most of our time by the pool - it would have been nice to have an alternative some days.

Lorraine, at the front desk, was particularly helpful. All the staff was good, but she just stood out. Kelly's cocktails were lethal!

Tobago was a lovely, unspoiled island and the people were very welcoming. We hope to return soon.

1.0 stars The worst hotel! Visited: November 2002
Posted by claire_jenkinson
I had a week's holiday booked at the Grand Courland Resort at the end of November 2001. We booked this hotel on the basis that it claimed to be a 4-star hotel. I cannot believe that the people who have reviewed this hotel positively actually stayed there! It was appalling.

I've stayed in a number of hotels in the Caribbean of 4-star level, but I could not recommend anyone more strongly not to stay here.
Our week beforehand in Grenada was excellent. We had stayed at a superb hotel with great facilities and service. We arrived in Tobago at about 11pm and we went straight to our room, as the whole hotel was in darkness. The room was dated but clean and pleasant.

The next morning, we couldn't believe our eyes. This whole complex is so rundown. The main restaurant was closed for refurbishment, which meant that we had only one place to eat for every meal. This was the little cafe next to the pool and the food was terrible.

The patio area was being cleaned by the pool, so all day we had the sound of a generator to listen to – we couldn't hear ourselves. Tiles in the pool were broken and moldy. The spa looked like a prison building, with stained carpets, no windows and no sign of anyone serving.

The beach wasn't fit to sit on. The sun beds were broken, parasols in tatters and the beach was covered in rubbish. I couldn't believe it. You have to cross a road to get to the beach, and the battered and broken watersports kit was across the road from the beach, with no one there to help.

We complained, mainly about the main restaurant being out of action, but got no response from the staff. We checked out on our first day and went elsewhere.

5.0 stars A small piece of paradise! Visited: November 2002

This is a wonderful hotel that we stumbled across by chance!

The food was excellent, the staff was so charming and friendly, the spa and the service there were clean, excellent and relaxing. The rooms were also very comfortable, clean and cool, and the towels were changed twice a day.

The evening entertainment at times was, at its best, okay.

We never used the pool, which looked good, the beautiful beach just down the hotel steps was just too much a magnet. The beach bar was excellent and the staff attended to all your needs.

Maybe all we can criticize was the water sports equipment, which was worn out, and its staff, which were not that willing to help. Also, the house wine was a bit on the cheap side.

On the whole, it was a very relaxing holiday, where we were made to feel welcome.

We also have to mention that the front of house manager, Lorraine Depeza, was fabulous. Nothing was too much to ask, every request was dealt with charm, a smile and efficiency.

We will return!
