If you drive around the island of Tobago you will see the twist and turns you have to go through to get to different parts of the island.
So, first of all, the location was excellent in Mount Irvine. The roads were simple, and for the most part, straight. Bijou-des-Caraibes had the perfect location.
It was about 15 minutes from Scarborough, and from the best beach in Tobago Pigeon Point near Bucco Reef. You can see this beautiful turquoise reef from the poolside on the mountain top, too. The Caribbean coast was so lovely to look at as soon as we took a stroll along the grounds.
Judy probably has the most beautiful garden in Tobago! It was well manicured and so delightful to look at. Bijou-des-Caraibes was so secure and secluded. You have a nice sized pool all to yourself at your disposal. It was so nice to just walk out and take a dip without the crowds.
Our every need was catered to here. The provided Wifi, BBQ Grill, A/C, and fresh towels. It was a completely furnished two-bedroom apartment with a well equipped kitchen. Also, there were no mosquitoes!
Judy is the best hostess, as she provided everything we needed and asked for. She even picked us up and dropped us off at the ferry port. Her staff also arranged a rental car for us which they drop off at the house for about $45 a day.
We really enjoyed ourselves. As we looked around the island to look at our second and third and so forth choices, we felt so relieved that we chose Bijou-des-Caraibes. There is no better place in Tobago to stay at- - believe us. We already checked for our next visit. |

You will never find a hostess like Judy. To make her guests feel comfortable and safe, she will arrange immediately everything you want (like a car, nice restaurants - whatever).
We loved our stay here! |

This was our third year to Tobago, and our second year at staying at Bijou des Caraibes. Judy and family are wonderful hosts, and we felt totally welcomed.
If you have any questions or needs, Judy always has time to help you with information.
Situated in Mt. Irvine, we find the location very central for all of our needs. The accommodations were wonderful from bachelor suites to multi bedrooms all with kitchenettes. The pool was a good size and well kept along with great grounds.
Mt. Irvine Beach was a five-minute drive, or we could walk there in about 30 minutes.
We will certainly be coming back in the near future. |

Bijou des Caraibes offered paradise, a good location, service, in a family atmosphere. Visited: October 2005 |

It was 30 years since my last visit, I was apprehensive to take my wife to somewhere I remembered as "Paradise".
Although the airport area had expanded, as had Scarborough, the remainder was still as I remembered. Judy at Bijou des Caribes completed our ideal holiday in Paradise. |

We have just had the most wonderful family holiday on Tobago. Our stay at Bijou des Caraibes was simply perfect.
Judy, Yvon and Yann looked after us like family from the moment we arrived. The location was excellent, the accommodation was ideal, and the gardens and pool were both fantastic.
There are not many holidays that you go on as guests and become friends. We will be back very soon. |

A superb place to stay with excellent hosts. Visited: January 2004 |

Right from the very start, Judy made us feel like long lost friends rather than paying guests. The accommodation was in a beautiful location (very quiet) and had a lovely pool and very pretty gardens.
The bird life one can observe whilst sitting outside ones room or by the pool was amazing - humming birds, woodpeckers, barred antshrikes, mot mots, etc.
As with all accommodations on the island, a car or jeep was really necessary to be able to do the island justice.
We certainly intend to return to this paradise of an island and would not hesitate to stay with Judy and family again. |

This was our second visit to the Caribbean, and our best. Tobago had a lot to offer, and Bijou des Caraibes was one of them.
It was ideally located, but out of the way. Judy, Von and Yann were hosts extrodinaire. They were always helpful with ideas and sound, hardy advice of what to do and what not to do. Judy knows all and should be used as your Tobago guide.
The rooms were perfectly priced, in fantastic surroundings with a beautiful pool for those days that you just want to chill. Included was maid service by Helena - caringly and superbly done.
Our favorite beach was Store Bay. There was plenty around - food and entertainment. Our favorite restaurant was Patino's. The lobster was to die for. My husband loves sea food and by far the best lobster we had was here. Pina Coladas were good, too.
People always say that the world is a big place and you should always visit somewehere different. However, our experience, with the help from Judy, was "paradise found" and we would definitely go back. |

Judy makes you feel completely at home and welcome.
The apartments are comfortable, clean and have everything guests need.
Also, the views are fabulous and it is well located within a ten-minute drive to loads of lovely restaurants. |

Our stay at Bijou in May 2003 was a wonderful vaction that we will remember for a long time.
Judy was the perfect host, the apartment was spacious and clean, and pool and gardens were well kept.
When our luggage was late, Judy lent us summer clothes, drove us to the grocery store and organized a driver for us to tour the island. We had our one-year-old son with us and Judy even babysat for us one night and organized a babysitter for another night. What a treat!
We can truly recommend staying at Bijou in Tobago - we had a wonderful time. Thanks, Judy! |

What excellent hosts! Visited: April 2002 |

This was the holiday of a lifetime and we only wish we could have spent longer on what is truly an island close to Paradise.
Our seven-day break was enriched by our hosts at Bijou, Judy and Yvon, who made us feel like we were a part of their family and nothing was too much trouble.
Judy's recommendations of where to dine out were excellent. In such a short period of time we were both well rested.
Also, Judy's recommendation of David to act as our tour guide was perfect and he was certainly a credit to the Tobagan people with nothing being any trouble.
We cherish the memory of having David organize a trip to Englishman's Bay, buying Red Snapper and preparing and cooking it for us to eat it while sunning ourselves on the beach! It makes my mouth water just thinking about it.
Five star hotels would do well to take time out to learn from Judy on how to make their guests happy. It certainly wasn't all about facades, it was about going the extra mile or more (in Judy's case).
April was a quiet time of the year. There was a chance of some rain, but that was normally late evening or early morning. We certainly didn't get any rain that kept us from visiting the beach or the sites. Being here during a quiet time suited us perfectly because we could get anywhere we wanted without any problem. |

The genuine hospitality makes this place Visited: March 2002 |

Four of us (including a difficult-to-please mother-in-law) stayed here for 11 days in March 2002.
Tired and fed up from our 16-hour journey , we were met late at night by cheerful Judy Gemmet and her two delightful sons, one of whom struck up an instant friendship with my 7 year old. In a matter of minutes, they were behaving as though they were long-established friends.
Not having any local currency, and with no banks open at that hour, to my amazement Judy readily lent me some money to purchase some breakfast provisions.
We awakened the following morning to discover immaculate grounds, a wonderful steep orchard (which my son immediately fell down) and a small, private pool.
Nothing was too much trouble for our hosts. They entertained my son (he disappeared for hours, had his first golf lesson and he was invited to play at local homes. They also recommended a barber, found us a local car rental firm, delivered hot cross buns on Easter morning, organized an Easter hunt for the children, etc. In short, they were fantastic hosts , the kind who knew our needs even before we knew them.
Do not expect luxury. If you are the five-star international hotel type, think again. Instead, this is five star, genuine and heartfelt hospitality with comfortable, clean accommodations.
Go - you will not regret it. And, by the way, my mother-in-law was sufficiently impresssed by my choice to tell me (for the first time in 30 years!) that she thought I was just right for her son! But then again, she could have been suffering from sunstroke! |

We recently returned from our two-week visit to Tobago. Our stay at the Bijou des Caraibes was nothing short of wonderful.
We originally planned to stay in a studio, but found that the one-bedroom apartment was more suitable for us. Judy was extremely accommodating to make sure we were comfortable and happy!
We rented a four-wheel-drive vehicle on-site and were on the road usually by 8:00 a.m. every day. We relied on Judy's expertise for recommendations on dinners (our favorite was the Arnos Vale Waterwheel), rain forest tours (Dexter James -- excellent!), best times to go into Scarborough, etc. Her advice was truly appreciated and helped us to feel at home on this beautiful island.
By staying in a smaller establishment, we had privacy without sacrificing any personal service. We were able to mingle with other guests, comparing notes on each day's adventures. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms and grounds were immaculate. Our entire Tobago experience was first rate. We highly recommend the Bijou des Caraibes -- you won't be disappointed! |

The best holiday of our lives. Visited: December 2000 |

We actually stayed here for two months in a Two-Bedroom Suite. It was great. When you stay for a long time, amenities have to be very good. If not, cabin fever sets in. We can tell you this never happened in this quaint, well managed and secure facility.
Everything is close, golf, the beach, restaurants (try Meshell), nightclubs (Lush), the town for food and supplies (You can cook in your unit or poolside, and I did cook gourmet meals, had barbecues, etc.) and let's not forget Sunday School! The owners, Yvon and Judith took us in like family, introduced us to their friends, had us over for Christmas Dinner, went out with us on New Year’s Eve and on many other occasions. They were great, friendly and attentive, yet discreet. If you’ve experienced pension hospitality in Europe, this is it but in a great tropical setting.
The grounds were lovely, the pool was private and immaculate, the villa is secure, and they had a staff of housemaids and gardeners that kept everything fresh and clean. You can rent a Jeep or a car right on the premises, by the day, the week or the month. It really is a Bijou set in a wonderful tropical paradise. And the island is so pretty and laid back. What a wonderful way to spend winter when you’re from Canada. Finally, the price is the best bargain on the island; the whole island is a bargain! We found two months in Tobago at the BDC to be less expensive than three weeks in Hawaii. We will be back!

Perfect accommodations! Visited: June 2000 |

We were here from the 1st through the 4th of June, 2000. Judy, her family, and staff made my friend and I stay two extra days here! We had planned to leave on Friday (to go back to Triniada), but stayed until Monday morning! Bijou des Caraibes was great. That was the best way to sum it up.
We stayed in a one-bed small apartment. It had all the kitchen appliances we could need (we barely used them anyway!), TV, pool, view, everything! I felt so safe here. Our room was cleaned thoroughly every day. We were picked up at the airport, and taken back when we needed to go.
Bijou was a short hike from the beach, so if you're looking for beachfront accommodations, this is not it. But the view the distance affords is breathtaking. Stepping out every morning to the view made me never want to leave.
We walked to Mt. Irvine beach (which was great for swimming) one day and it was only about 12 or 15 minutes. It's easy to catch a taxi from Bijou. My friend and I were considering renting a car (which Judy made so easy), but decided not to risk it since driving is on the left side of the road down here!
Judy called a driver for us to talk to about rates and a tour. He ended up being perfect! We used him two days in a row and he took us to "Sunday School" (a huge beach party with steel drums and dancing all night long) on Sunday night. I highly recommend him. He was a nice, safe, trustworthy fellow. His name was Dave. |

This is a wonderful place to stay, great value! Visited: November 1999 |

This property is almost beyond words. Though the value is definitely five-star, there is nothing stuffy or pretentious about it. The hosts are very proud of their establishment and aspire to make sure everyone leaves with fond memories of Tobago. They certainly did this with us and apparently with many others since the other people there during our stay were repeat visitors. The view alone is worth the price. Located on a hill, the vista is breathtaking. The pool-side is festooned with flowering shrubs and vegatation and attracts as many different birds as we saw any place on the island. Along with the beauty of the setting, the pool is clean, inviting and a great place to relax either before or after a day of discovery. We stayed in a studio apartment, allowing us to have meals at home when desired. All the accommodations were spotless and well-maintained by a very pleasant and accommodating staff. We felt very much at home and welcome. While we already felt safe and comfortable, the locking gate and fence around the property gave us an extra sense of security. We never even locked our door.
The location is close to activities and some of the best snorkling around. The resturants in the area are indeed some of the island's best and add greatly to the experince of Tobago.
The hosts are very knowlegeable and willing to help you plan what to see and how to see it to the best advantage.
We are very happy to give a glowing review of this property. We only hope that there will be room for us when we are ready to return. |

From the moment we were collected at the airport and whisked to our apartment, this holiday was one to remember. Our hosts, Judy and Yvon, were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. They were able to put us in touch with local guides for the various trips that we wanted to undertake. The apartments were spotless and spacious with good restaurants nearby.
We will certainly be going back to Tobago and hopefully to Bijou des Caraibes. |

Quiet, scenic, and a great host! Visited: November 1999 |

Despite the late arrival of our flight from Trinidad, Judy was there waiting for us at the airport just as promised. Our room was equipped with light snacks and juice and was most appreciated since a shopping trip was the last thing we wanted to do after a long day of travel.
After giving us a tour of the grounds, our host invited us to breakfast on the verandah the next morning.
The quiet, pool, views, and welcome air-conditioning made this accommodation the best of our trip. First time visitors would be wise to stock and use the in-room kitchen as the nearest restaurant--Papillions was terrific, but a bit of a hike.
I do not recommend driving after sun down...a 40 minute trip took us 1.5 hours of stressful driving; Road signs weren't well lit, not posted, or on the opposite side of the road on which we were driving. Though you give up some spontaneity, a driver gets you to the sites faster and safer than you can on your own, especially after dark.
Don't miss a trip to the Fort King George in Scarborough, truely magnificent views, and the tour guides on grounds were very well informed.
I would recommend the north end of the island to divers and snorkelers as this seemed less touristy and oriented more to the experienced enthusiast than Bucoo Reef. Argyll Falls and the roads and trails crossing the Forrest Reserve was worth the trip. Don't miss Sunday School for the food, music, and a chance to get to mix and dance with the locals.
Though the guide books say the island can be circled in a day, don't--take time to enjoy each of Tobagos communities and beaches for a few days before moving on. |
