can't wait to go back Visited: February 2010 |
|
| Posted by mackieal23 | |
| People say that February is a good time of year to get away from England, but we've learnt this week that it's also an awful time of year to return!! I don't know if this is always the case, or simply because we loved Castara & Castara Retreats as much as we did (since being back I've bought three new pairs of shorts in anticipation of our next trip!). Castara Retreats is everything the reviews say - it sits on a hill on the edge of the village with stunning views looking over & out to sea and surrounded by rainforest. The place is low-key in the best way, as is the village & hopefully it will stay that way. It took us 3 or 4 days to de-shy & wind down to the local pace - at which point we started to get a real feel for the place. The locals could not have been sweeter, leaving us to mix in with village life as much or as little as we liked. Porridge, Jeanell, and all associated with Retreats were great and helped to make our time stress free & easy. We swam, snorkeled, fished, walked, explored, ate, drank, danced, and generally limed around - quietly at the Retreats or with the locals in the village. Not a place for people who can't do without mod-cons. Expect chickens, insects, birds, bats, and all that comes with simple village life - can't wait to go back. Ally & Fleur Hummingbird 2 |

Chillaxin' 0 a second time Visited: December 2009 |
|
| Posted by gjleckie | |
| This was our 3rd Tobago trip and our 2nd in 3 yrs at Castara Retreats, overlooking Castara Bay. Birdsong's spacious; 4 furnished sundecks for chillaxin' + large roofed veranda living space; dining table, chairs and upholstered wicker sofas. No TV (not missed). The bedrooms are airy & comfortable (frame mozzie nets & ensuites. The kitchen's well equipped. Gardens are lovely, full of local birds - views stupendous. Don't expect peaceful nights: Castara's a working village, that's its charm. Locals start early; strimming at 5am to the accompaniment of trucks grinding up the hill. Few locals have late nights - often abed by 11pm. Daylight and a small truck tootles through the village. The goats in the back, wide eyed in anticipation of a holiday, are off to the abattoir. Note the cute ones tethered by Marguerite's eatery is likely your dinner the following evening. Metro squeamish re goat? Then eat fish straight from the sea. Brilliant! Cheno's(?) cafe opposite M's is esp rec - excellent value + the owner couldn't be more helpful; terrific breakfasts - try salt fish & coconut bake. Castara Retreats is Porridge, their local man; he's a legend; super helpful & your best friend on Tobago. You want it, he'll get it - nothing's too much trouble + hire cars, trips & excursions. The lovely Jeanelle (Mrs Porridge) looks after everything domestic with her staff, many of whom are family. We've never had any cause for complaint re cleanliness or any aspect of housekeeping. EXCELLENT! |

The casablanca is the most wonderfull place to stay Visited: November 2009 |

| Ray and Pat are wonderfull hosts, nothing is too much trouble. They collect you from the airport and give lots of good advice about where to go and what to do on the island. Rays tours of the island are not to be missed and will always include some great watering holes! The breakfasts are fabulous, filling and a different one every day Everywhere is spotlessly clean and your laundry is done daily. The views from the house are breathtaking and the pool area and gardens paradise. Renting a car would be recommended The casablanca is the place to stay in Tobago |

A home away from home Visited: February 2010 |
|
| Posted by p_haywood | |
| As someone who loves Trinidad but hates big impersonal hotels, The Gingerbread House was a most fortuitous find. The website (www.trinidadgingerbreadhouse.com)gives a completely accurate description of the facilities of a very superior guesthouse, but cannot express just how much the resident proprietors add to any visit by welcoming you into most parts of their home, engaging in friendly conversations and answering all sorts of queries while still respecting your privacy. The house itslf was lovingly restored by them and has authentic architectural charm, while the en- suite guest rooms are cool and spacious. You can enjoy a full cooked breakfast, and a shady garden with recliners and a small pool which enable you to escape the heat (in a country like Trinidad you really should not wish to spend much of the daylight hours indoors!). The location is away from the noise and dust of central Port of Spain, but still within a kilometre or so of a compact capital city. There is a good range of restaurants quite close, the superb Veni Mange being the nearest. I may see you there! |

Caribbean Tourist Villa provided a welcoming environment. Visited: February 2010 |
|
| Posted by salishab49 | |
| I stayed at the guest house during the Carnival, and I met the friendliest staff ever. I have been to other establishments, but I would return here any day. The rooms were clean and had all the modern conveniences. The staff was always helpful and courteous. The best thing was that we were able to walk downtown and to all the restaurants on "d Avenue". We were dressed in our costumes and practically walked out to the next street to join our band. I felt at home and welcomed by the staff here. I can't wait for next year's Carnival. |

Castara Retreats is a Caribbean oasis. Visited: February 2010 |
|
| Posted by skrausert | |
| We had been looking forward to our stay at Castara Retreats for quite some time and it still managed to surpass our lofty expectations. Right from the moment we stepped off the plane and met Porridge who greeted us with a couple Caribs, we were well taken care of. Our lodge, Fisherman's, was fantastic. The views were exactly as shown on the web site. You could hear and see the ocean from everywhere in the lodge. The deck space was great for enjoying a few drinks, reading, napping in the hammock, or eating a freshly cooked seafood dinner. The kitchen was well stocked with everything one could want/need for cooking. The lodge itself was very modern. As for the staff, Porridge really does know everyone and he takes the time each day to make sure there isn't something that you need that you're not getting. Porridge always manages to stop by at the right time. He got us fish two days, cooked it for us one night. He took us on a tour of the northern part of Tobago to Charlotteville, Speyside, Little Tobago, and Argyle Falls, all of which were beautiful. The local people were some of the friendliest we've come across in our travels. Sherwin, Marguerite, Cheno, and so many others that we met along the way made us feel at home. Staying in Castara, you really feel like you are part of the village and not stuck in a touristy area in the least bit. You're definitely experiencing the authentic Caribbean here, something that you can't do on most of the other islands which are overrun with Americanized resorts. Our favorite restaurants were Coffee House (Cheno's) for breakfast with the superb coconut bake along with fish or bacon, eggs, and fruit. We also liked Marguerite's, where Sherwin and Marguerite team to do some ridiculously good cooking. The pizzas, which you must order in advance, are outstanding. Also, the goat was best here. But, buying some fish from the co-op or from Porridge and Sherwin and cooking it at your place is one of the best things about staying here. You don't feel guilty eating in because the lodges are located up on the hill with the ocean just below. Book a stay here and head to Tobago knowing you've made a great decision. |

| The pool and room decor were too nice for me to notice the staff attitude. There is always room for improvement. I suggest upgrades and a tastier and "warm" breakfast. Overall, though, it was a great stay. |

This was a disappointment. Visited: February 2010 |
|
| Posted by sharltanas | |
| I saw the pics online and booked directly with the hotel. However, I was disappointed when I arrived to see the condition of this place. I have stayed in other places before for the same price or cheaper, and the standards and deco of the hotel were far better than here. I only stayed one night because I could not stomach to wake up every day with soiled hardware, rotten stove tops and swollen dressing tops. I get upset just thinking about it. The staff may have been nice, but I was too depressed and disaapointed to notice it. The rooms were not the same as shown on the Internet. Do not be fooled. I'm sorry for this negative review, but the standards were very, very poor. Tobago had far better resorts than this one for the same price. I suggest you shop around. I have never felt so disappointed, embarrassed and angry in my all my stays in Tobago. I am not going to try new resorts because of this experience, for fear the same would happen again. |

| I stayed at the villa for seven wonderful nights! I was a little leery at first after reading the fair reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived. The staff was very accommodating and courteous, and the room met my expectations. I was comfortable and I felt at home. In addition, it was very easy to get to town whether by transportation or foot. All in all, it was a great deal for the money, and I'm glad I stayed here. I would definitely stay here again! |

This is the most convenient and comfortable place. Visited: July 2009 |

| In July 2009 I stayed at The Diego Martin location, while visiting from New York City. It is conveniently located minutes from the capital of Port-Of-Spain. It is also easy to access all the highways, local taxis, shopping malls, pharmacies, restaurants and tourist attractions. I was given an evening waterfront nightspot / restaurant excursion by Mr. Tony. My accommodations were superb, and I was treated as if I was a family member. The efficiency unit contained cable TV, air conditioning, and a kitchen with a stove. He even provided a microwave for my convenience. Utensils, cutlery and hot water were all included. Access to the main house was granted to store frozen items, perishables or for formal dining. I felt at home, which is unlike a gratuity-driven hotel where guests are pressured to tip in response to excessive hypocritical kindness. I plan to return (this year) to Tony's Guest House. I will also recommend it to others. His rates are very affordable, and I would suggest a stay here without hesitation. I was very pleased. |

Simple is perfection at Castara Retreats. Visited: January 2010 |

| Castara Retreats is composed of few wood made bungalows fully integrated in the lush tropical vegetation. Do not expect to find air conditioning, a swimming pool or other fancy facilities. That is what makes of Castara Retreats a unique and true place! We stayed in Hummingbird 1 where the view of the Castara Bay was simply so breathtaking that I could not stop saying every day what a extraordinary place! We have traveled a lot and have seen many exotic places. Castara Bay is a true Caribbean paradise, and Castara Retreats is definitely the best resting place on the island! We highly recommend it! |

We had a wonderful family vacation! Visited: December 2009 |

| My family and I just returned from La Casablanca Guest House. We had a wonderful stay here. Pat and Ray are excellent hosts. The breakfasts were huge and filled us up for the day. Pat and Ray were sensitive to our dietary restrictions, too. They also kept the house very clean and do laundry daily. La Casablanca is a three-minute walk from a beautiful beach, and we spent tons of time there. We spent the evenings by the refreshing pool or enjoying the ocean view from the balcony. Pat and Ray also went out of their way to make our trip to be more enjoyable. La Casablanca also has a "family room" where we could watch TV (full cable) and there was a small library. Renting a car is recommended. We found Tobago to be beautiful, and we definitely recommend a stay at La Casablanca Guest House. |

We had a wonderful time at Castara Cottage. Visited: October 2009 |
|

| My husband and I, our son and daughter, their partners, and our two-year-old grandaughter stayed at Castara Cottage in October 2009. We rented all three apartments, and it was a wonderful family holiday. We have stayed in Tobago four times, in different places, and Castara is definitely the best! It is a small fishing village, and it is not very touristy. The local shop sells a basic food, there's plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables available, as is freshly caught fish and locally baked bread. There are also several restaurants serving home cooked food, and good quality ice cream. The cottages are very well furnished and equipped, and the sheets and towels were changed very often by Brigette, the so helpful and nice manager. Tumeric and Saffron can be connected by simply opening a door. Although Tamirand only sleeps four, the table on its big balcony was easily big enough for us all, including the high chair provided. The sitting room in Tamirand in very big, too, so it all provided us with a very spacious and comfortable family space. The cottage is just a minute or two from the beaches, where there is excellent swimming (and amazing snorkeling accessible from Heavenly Beach). |

| Earlier this year my husband, son and I traveled to Tobago to stay in a beautiful, family run apartment called Castara Cottage. This was our second visit to Castara Cottage, and we weren't disappointed. We stayed in the same Cinnamon apartment which felt like home. It was spacious, clean, and had all the amenities we needed. It also had a bonus of an additional outdoor shower. Wildlife was all around, and our son thoroughly enjoyed trying to catch the geckos and feed the brightly colored birds that visited us on our porch. The manager, Brigette, was friendly and approachable. She was always available during the day if needed. She would also come in a couple of times a week to change the bedding, lay out fresh towels, etc. This helped make our stay more pleasant. Because of its extremely close proximity to two beaches, our son was never out of the water. The locals were very friendly and engaging with some great local knowledge. There were many activities for us to do. One of our favorites was a fishing trip we went on. We set out from morning, fished, snorkeled and took in the amazing sights. The highlight of that trip was eating lunch on a beautiful beach where we got to feed a sting ray. On another occasion we got to see giant turtles laying their eggs. If you like nature, you will understand how exciting that was for us. The local cuisine was mouth-watering and very affordable. Even though we had the facilities to cook, we found ourselves eating out a lot of the time. Overall, we gave this holiday experience five stars for its homey, friendly, non-complicated, and easy going surroundings. We will definitely be booking a return trip. |
