4.0 stars Beaches was a very nice escape. Visited: July 2002

I just returned from Beaches and I have to say it was a pretty good vacation. What I noticed was that, if you pay too much attention to the brochure, then you will be let down a little.

The beach was the most amazing part. I didn't believe water could really be that clear. The pools and and ocean were both rather warm. You got a bit of relief from the heat. The grounds were very, very beautiful. I was suprised they were so nice.

The food was pretty good in my opinion. I'm not a seafood lover, so I only ate at Arizona's and Reflections. Reflections was okay. I ate at Arizona's almost every night because they had the most delicious barbeque chicken I have ever eaten. Bobby D's was good for random snacks through the night, because it was open all night.

The employees were nice for the most part, but there were some who were intolerable. Namely, the man at the the snorkling rental. He was the only one who really stuck out as not even trying to be nice. The maid service was very nice.
The waiters were inconsistent each night. Sometimes they were quick and other times you had a 20-minute wait.

The kids seemed like they had a lot of fun with all of the activities they had.
Overall, I enjoyed my stay, but by the end I was ready to go home. The ocean was amazing. I can't say that enough. If you go, you have to go snorkling. I enjoyed myself.

4.0 stars It was nice, but I'm not sure about returning. Visited: June 2002

The grounds at Beaches are outstanding, virtually a horticultural wonderland. The beach and water are equally outstanding. From there, this resort gets a bit more mediocre but remains an enjoyable place to stay.

There are nine restaurants, but they all retain the same flavor and put a slightly different spin on the same fare. If you are used to, or expecting high-end cuisine, you may be disappointed. The food is certainly plentiful and in some cases above average, but short of gourmet quality. The food service is inconsistent, with attentive staff on some nights and not others. In general, the staff was friendly.

The room we had was located close to the main hotel, centrally located. As an accommodation it was adequate - but not luxurious. Personally, this was not a concern as little time was spent in the room. Housekeeping was also inconsistent in how well-kept the room was from day to day.

The Spa is very nice, but is not part of the all-inclusive package. The services are expensive, but the quality of service is good.

The sit down restaurants are a welcome break from the more commonly available buffet style. In particular, Schooner's and Sapodilla are recommended, but the latter requires a reservation and is an "adults only" restaurant. Schooner's typically has a wait.

Night life is disappointing and nearly non-existent. While all-inclusive, it is highly recommended to take a boat trip at an extra cost to do something besides swimming. There are some daily activities, but they are not well advertised.

For the tennis player, there are four courts and a pro is on staff, but is a bit laid back. I was able to hook up with some other players and get an hour and a half in most mornings. The courts are hard courts and are in decent condition.

Overall, with cooperative weather, this was a nice trip. They strive for a mix of couples and family activities, leaning towards the latter. With older kids and good weather, this could be an enjoyable stay.

With younger kids and strollers, of which there were a fair amount to my surprise, it seemed to go against the intent of being a time of relaxation. That, of course, is a personal decision to make. A lot of walking down narrow paths is required and there are no life guards.

Overall, I have no regrets regarding this trip, and Turks and Caicos remains an unspoiled island as of yet. If your expectations are reasonable, an enjoyable time can be had.

4.0 stars It was worth the money! Visited: May 2002

I just returned from a terrific week at Beaches with my eleven year old daughter. It was definitely worth recommending to families.

The property was beautiful and well maintained. We had a deluxe room in the French Quarter - it was clean and comfortable. The pools were nice - not too crowded. The food was okay, but not memorable. But it was certainly nothing to complain about. My daughter liked Guiseppes and Arizona the best.

Highlights included snorkeling off the beach and the excursion to see iguanas and hunt for sand dollars.

The lowlights were that our room location was too far from our favorite pool (Cascades) and there were grumpy people without kids complaining about all the kids.

Altogether, we had a great time. It was worthy of a return trip!

Also, it was smokin' hot the entire time. We went through two bottles of sunscreen in five days!

4.0 stars Amazing for kids! Visited: April 2002

Beaches is definitely the perfect resort to take kids.

My son loved it! He loved the snorkeling, the unlimited food and drinks, the Sega center, the water slides, the pools, the beach, the watersports.....everything.

We thought the resort was beautiful and the service was excellent. Everything was very conveniently located.

The only negatives were that the water in the room had an odor, the food quality was very good - but not great, and you had to get to the pool and beach early to get a lounge chair. However, we went during Easter break.

All in all, we had a wonderful time and would recommend the resort for families and would like to return in the future.

4.0 stars A great beach resort with so-so food and service. Visited: March 2002

I spent a week with my wife and son. We had beautiful weather, a great beach, nice pools, great activities, and excellent snorkeling. We had a room in the French Village, and the room was nice and comfortable, but noisy at night when the band played, and was a good distance walk from the beach.

The food was mediocre at all the various restaurants. The seafood restaurant was the best of the bunch. The service was okay, not great, but we never experienced any rudeness, and most of the staff was friendly.

There were lots of kids here, which was okay by me, but be warned if you don't like kids. I loved the beach and may return to the Turks and Caicos Islands, but probably not to Beaches again. I don't think the stay was worth the big money I paid for it. I'd rather be right on the beach and eat a little better for an average of $600/night. This was a solid vacation choice, though and it was relaxing – we never left the resort area aside from strolling up the beach.

4.0 stars Way too many small children Visited: March 2002
Posted by skraft
The grounds are lovely, the food was very good, certain restaurants better (Sapodilla's). The diving was perfect but..we were unprepared for the armada of small/infant and under 6 year old population. They try very hard to allow get away places for adults but without the parents policing the children, we ended up sharing the small adults-only spa with 2 snorkeling 7-10 year olds.

The swim-up bars are not pleasant when youngsters are climbimg all over the seats around you. The screaming and crying at the restaurants made it hard to enjoy a quiet dinner. Nightly entertainment was non-exsistent if you didn't have a child that liked to perform on stage.

We have traveled for years with our boys but never remember a place where you got run over by baby carriages. The beach was beautiful but by 8 am people have staked out all the chairs with towels. Also at the pools. Now they may not be able to make it to the beach that day but their towels have a lovely day at the beach.

The people working there were very nice and tried very hard to alleviate our stress. I would definitely go back to the Turks/Caicos. I probably would not go back to Beaches.

We've just returned from our second visit to Beaches. We must say this stay was even better then the last one. We were upgraded to a suite, which was great!

My husband, two daughters (16-12) and I loved Beaches. It was so relaxing. The food, for the most part, was good. The staff was great. Although, we had one host who must have been having a bad day. The entertainment was so-so, but remember it was for a family-oriented audience, so don't expect Vegas shows.

We have traveled throughout Europe and have been to Barbados, Mexico, St. Croix, Cayman Islands, Hawaii and the Turks and Caicos. We have found that Beaches was the one that we have enjoyed the most.

Everything was self-contained here. If you are looking for being together with your kids, not expecting to do a lot of sight seeing and just unwinding, I highly recommend Beaches!

The food was of four star quailty; the entertainment - two star; the staff - five star; the grounds - five star; the rooms -five star (we were upgraded); and the relaxation - five star plus.

We just got back from our seven-day trip. My husband and I brought our 18, 16 and 10 year olds. We all had a great time.

We stayed during the President's week and we were very comfortable. We had full access to everything they offered. We were with four other families and our travel agent made reservations at three restaurants for all 19 of us. We had no problems.

We went on a day trip with Captain Bill and had a great day! We found the staff very friendly and accomodating. Our room was great, the pools were great and we had no waiting at the bars. We all had a great time!

3.0 stars One word to sum up this hotel, average. Visited: December 2001

We just returned from spending Christmas 2001 at Beaches.

It was not the worst holiday we have had, but it certainly wasn't the best either. Everything apart from the beach and the sea seemed to be average. The food and drinks were, the room was, the entertainment certainly was and the state of the place was. There was nothing to distinguish it from several other Caribbean resort hotels we had been to - even other all-inclusives.

If you don't go expecting too much you probably won't be disappointed. If you go expecting an "ultra" resort with gourmet food and personal service, you probably will be.

At Christmas the place was little more than half full, consequently there was no waiting to get into restaurants and no shortage of loungers. What the situation would be if they were fully booked is another matter.

Also be warned, the information you get about restaurant opening times, etc. varies according to where you look. For definitive information look on the board at the Customer Services desk in the atrium; they seem to have the latest information.

And lastly, the room we were in had an interconnecting door. This was not used, as we were on our own. However, we could hear every word from the next room, which at times proved quite disconcerting. Tip: If you are put in a room like this, ask for a transfer if you value your privacy and don't appreciate being woken at 7am each morning.

My significant other and I had a fantastic time at Beaches. It was not crowded at all and there were hardly any kids—they were all back in school.

The beach and the water were breathtaking. The beach was narrow but very long. There's an excellent snorkeling spot about 10 minutes to the left of Beaches down the beach—within walking distance. Scuba diving is a must- and it's included.

The food was just okay. If you have a stocked fridge, you better get bottled water. Entertainment was mediocre, but we are in our early 20's and had no children with us. The staff had a talent show and had a game show. Be prepared to walk--the resort is like a small town.

4.0 stars Nice, but... Visited: June 2001

My husband and I went to Beaches & Caicos for 7 nights Memorial Day week. It was very nice and we had a good time overall. There were a lot of "buts" though.

The one that sticks out in my mind the most was the night we went to Sapadilla's. This restaurant (seafood, was very good) only has 2 seatings. So we got in line with a couple we met at the resort about 30-45 minutes in advance of opening. We got in but I'm guessing people near the end of the line didn't. As we were being seated, we saw a large group of people come up from the beach side (not the main entrance where the line was) and hand the restaurant manager a wad of American money. They were then seated at a prime table. So much for the "no tipping" policy at this resort. Side note: we've been to two Sandals in Jamaica as well and never saw anything like this and that was the only time we saw it here. We did enjoy this meal, as well as the Saturday Seafood buffet at the International restaurant and our meal at the adult-only French restaurant. Avoid Arizona's—everything was really bad.

The female bartender at the French Village pool was the absolute worst, downright mean. The other bartenders weren't far behind her. Many employees seemed grumpy, but there were a few Jamaicans in the mix (easy to pick out!) that were quite cheerful and happy to get you what you asked for.

My husband took the "book part" of scuba classes near home before we went and got both his open water and advanced open water PADI certifications on this trip. He had nothing but good things to say about "J.C." (Claude), the scuba instructor.

We paid for the lowest category of room but got upgraded to the French Village. The room was nice and the landscaping beautiful “but” it was a good 10-15-minute walk to the beach. That is a long way to carry scuba and snorkeling equipment. Someone suggested getting a baby stroller from the front desk for our gear, unfortunately this wasn't thought of until near the end of our stay, so we didn't give that a try.

Most of the kids played in the Pirate's Island area, which was pretty loud and obnoxious, but off to the side and easy to avoid. Some kids played in the main pools. Most were well behaved (left strangers alone), but some were quite bothersome, bumping into our rafts, splashing, etc. Their parents either weren't around or weren't paying attention. Fairly typical of places with large numbers of kids, most are properly supervised, but not all.

If we go back to Turks & Caicos we'll go to a regular hotel—the island seems safe enough.

Although Beaches charges five star luxury prices for its resort, it gives two star service! We paid $7300 (including air from Newark) for one room, non-concierge level for two adults, a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old. Beaches bills its food as gourmet. And while they offer fancy meals such as crab legs, lobster and filet mignon, the food itself was average to mediocre. Staff was indifferent. Restaruant air conditioning non-existant.

Forget trying to take advantage of the free scuba diving lessons for beginners. Beaches offers 9 to 18 slots daily for a resort that holds 1400 people! Chances of diving are nil. Snorkeling gear was at a premimum too. No beach bar or service. You must go to the pool bars for drinks.

The room and grounds are immaculate, however the rooms had double rather than queen size beds. Cutting corners is the Beaches way. This is what I mean by charging 5 star prices for 2 star service.

4.0 stars Better for families than couples Visited: June 2001

This is a great hotel on a beautiful property, with one of the best beaches I've seen. But it is so overrun with children that I would only recommend it for families.

There were some adults-only restaurants, and they were the best on the property. The food was good. But the only other thing set aside for adults was one Jacuzzi and that wasn't working properly. If you want a raft in the pool, or use of a Jacuzzi or even a pool table, you're going to find yourself waiting a long time.

Since there is so much already set aside for children, I would recommend that they set aside a little more for adults. If they had, I would have given this a five-star rating, but the service suffers somewhat compared to many of the other hotels we've been to.
The best service was in the adults’ restaurant and the one bar that children were not allowed in.

Beaches tries to fool its clientele with lots of flash (and often does if one judges by its reviews) and no substance. For example, it boasts "gourmet" food. What it should tell its clients is that this is buffet city. The few sit down restaruants available to families with kids under 15 all have the same old dried out buffets or they try to get fancy (rabbit one night) and just don't make the mark. Beaches gives you Absolute or Stoli. There's a BIG difference between the brands. Absolute and Stoli is not top shelf (although many people seem to think they are).

Scuba at Beaches for beginners is a joke. There is in effect no such thing as "free scuba diving and lessons" since they only have 9 -18 (depending on if their workers show up) slots available each day. People would line up at 7 a.m. for an 8 a.m. opening to sign up for the next day and not get in. With such few slots the first three parties usually booked the entire day! Lots of unhappy people because of this.

Parents should be very aware that there are NO LIFEGUARDS on the beach or in the pool areas. This also is not shared with Beaches guests (you have to read the sign that is posted to know this).

Another example is the double beds in the rooms. A truly first rate resort would at least automatically provide queen size beds.

Did we have fun? Yes. That's only because despite spending a fortune to stay at a supposed top shelf place, we kept lowering the bar of expectations and realized that Beaches tries (and often fools) to con people into thinking they are giving you the best.

The island, beach and water are beautiful. I'd try a condo next time. Many of us who stayed that week sang the same song: Back to Provo but NEVER AGAIN BEACHES!

3.0 stars Scuba was great...service not so great Visited: June 2001

My wife and I just got back from a 7-day vacation to Beaches. Let me preface this by admitting that we have spoiled ourselves on other vacations with excellent accommodations, etc. Here's our review: The transportation to and from the airport was easy and great; they use local taxis so you don't have to wait for a bus and a bunch of people to board it.

The rooms are average, we had a suite which was comfortable but the view was the pits. Most of the views don't seem to reach the beach, ours was of an empty lot.

The food and service was especially good in Sapadilla's... you have to eat there! The restaurants on the French side were only average. The buffets turned out to be better than we expected.

The beach was comfortable and well kept. The scuba was the highlight. The men and women working in the dive shop are excellent, friendly, and well qualified. They took us to great sites and provided great tours. I brought my own gear... but in looking at what they offered, it wasn't bad... average I guess. Bring your own goggles for sure.

There isn't much to do at night... a little entertainment, but mostly homegrown stuff that's fun to watch.

The downside of this vacation for us was the service. I did convey this to the manager while we were there. About 25% of the staff are friendly and accommodating. We found the rest to be generally unfriendly and slow to respond. We had a hard time getting simple things like coffee and tea. You often felt like you were an inconvenience to staff. The folks in the bars were some of the worst.

If I were the management there, I'd find a way quickly to provide incentives to the staff... like leave review cards on resturant tables so that guests can compliment staff. After a waiter gets a certain number of excellent responses...give 'em a bonus. As an all-inclusive, there is no tipping and therefore no obvious incentive for staff to be friendly.

Anyway, we enjoyed our vacation very much. Don't go there with high expectations...go for the great diving.

4.0 stars A great resort for families. Visited: May 2001

Our family of four traveled to this resort with my husband's family and their three kids (all kids were between the ages of 3 and 8). The kids had a wonderful time and all amenities for them were great.

The weather could have been better, as it was quite cloudy, but we heard it was not typical weather for that time of year. The staff could have been a lot friendlier, certainly the staff at two resorts in Jamaica were 100% nicer than here.

The food was excellent in all the restaurants (the only one we did not eat in was Saspodillas). The kids had a great time in the kids clubs when they were there (not often). It was great to have some alone time as couples.

The excursion to see the iguanas and to Shell Island was a definite must! The water was absolutely phenomenal!

The rooms were nice and the grounds were beautiful. We were fortunate to go at half-price on the adult fare and the kids were reduced for that particular week. I would not pay full price to stay at this resort. There were many other places at other islands that I have read about on this web site that were more economical and just as nice.

Overall, this was a very nice resort, but they need to incorporate a friendlier staff.

Beaches is a great place for the whole family to go, relax and have a great time in the sun! Not only does it have incredible food, it has a variety of food from different cultures to choose from. It is a great place to have alone time, just send the kids to one of their great programs or to a kids’ water park, and don’t forget the Sega room with tons of video games.

There is also a lot to do outside of the resort. Travel to Iguana Island on a boat that you can get from the hotel, and find great seashells. The snorkeling is great! The water is also great! It has a great spa where you can relax. Our whole group had a wonderful time!

4.0 stars Beautiful beach, and great for kids, but a little crowded. Visited: February 2001
Posted by TFB
I stayed here with my wife and 1-year-old. What stands out most is the magnificent beach and crystal clear water. Although the actual beachfront in front of the resort was literally elbow to elbow, you could seek some privacy to the right of the main beach and about and an 8-minute walk to the left was terrific snorkeling at Bight Beach.

The service was decent. At times we felt people went above and beyond the call of duty and at other times there was complete apathy on the part of the staff. After about 10 trips to the Caribbean we've learned not to expect too much. That's not the reason you go.

Food: There were 7-8 restaurants and the food was actually pretty good. We live in NYC and have become very spoiled, but the food for the most part was above average.

Accommodations: We stayed in a "1 Bedroom Beachfront Villa," which was extremely misleading. It was actually about a 3-minute walk to the beach; it was not a big deal, but not beachfront. The villa was nice with a king bed and separate living room. The balcony was spacious with a partial view of the ocean—even though it was about 150 yards away. There were stray dogs that barked and ran amuck in the vacant lot next to the resort. Aside from keeping me off the beach at night, the dogs did not take away from the trip.

The new French Village that was built behind the original resort has its pros and cons. On the upside, the pool is by far the nicest and it also supports a couple of restaurants. On the downside, it floods the beachfront with way too many people.

In closing we would go back to Beaches when our child is older. It is perfect for families with kids ages 3-12. It's just a bit crowded.

My husband, my three kids (10,6 and 4) and I loved it. We had a great time with plenty to do. The kids went to a camp that included swimming, snorkeling, boat rides, movie watching, dance lessons, etc. They had a blast and still talk about it.

We stayed in the French village which was beautiful, but was a hike for three kids to get to the beach. Meals were good, but prices were a bit high. I wouldn't go if I didn't have kids because it was a resort for kids. But overall, our family will never forget it. Our concern was to be with the kids and enjoy it. That's exactly what we did - and so did they.

5.0 stars A wonderful vacation. Visited: December 2000

This was not my first visit to Turks & Caicos, but was my first at Beaches. This place was wonderful--the atmosphere, people, food, beach, etc. The water was the best I have ever seen and the coral reef was incredible. There are eight restaurants and all but one of them (Arizona’s) were excellent. My only complaint about Arizona’s was that it became overrun with flies during the lunch buffet, which I found to be disgusting. My favorites were the adult-only restaurants. There was an abundance of heavenly pastries everywhere; this is not the place to be if you are on a diet. We stayed in the French Village, which was beautiful, clean and convenient to some restaurants. This area had the largest pool, but was not on the beach. (It’s a 10-minute walk.) All of the pools have bars. My only complaint about the French Village was the noise at night. You can hear the entertainment (which is not very good) playing until 11:00 p.m. in your room.

This is not the place to be if you are looking for a wild, drinking, dancing, gambling type of vacation. It is low-key, catering to the person who wants to relax, sun at the beach and snorkel. The beach does get very crowded and sometimes is loud with kids. If you do not claim your chair by 9:00 a.m. there is a good chance you will not find one until the very end of the day.

Overall, we loved this resort so much so that we are planning a return visit in December of 2001. This once unspoiled island unfortunately is becoming very popular and is getting crowded. I have noticed a big change over the past few years. I wish it could stay quiet and low-key. That is my idea of a vacation. Enjoy.
