4.0 stars This is a great resort that will improve with time. Visited: December 2001

My wife and I spent seven nights at this resort for our honeymoon.

When we arrived, at about 9 o'clock at night, we realized that we had been placed in the wrong room - we requested an ocean view and received a garden view. My wife and I alerted the front desk and from that point on, the staff did everything possible to make up for the mistake. We even received an upgrade from our original reservations.

The room was cozy and well appointed, the beach was beautiful, and the staff worked hard to make our stay enjoyable.

The entry to the resort was a bit of an eyesore, and the new development (phase two) was a little destracting. However, phase two was nearly completed. My only other complaint was that the water was a bit cold during late December/early January, but not so cold that I would not go back during that time of year.

The grounds were gorgeous otherwise, and I left the resort with the feeling that I had received more than my money's worth. I am anxious to return when everything is finished. If the resort doesn't jack up its prices, it will turn into one of the best on Provo.

5.0 stars The very best place to stay. Visited: August 2001

I stayed 16 days at RWI with my wife and we came back yesterday. Due to different postings on the Internet I would like to point out the following: All construction sites near RWI are nearly completed, so we had no construction noise during our stay.

We stayed in a 1-bedroom suite in building No.1, which was oceanfront and just perfect: upscale furniture, kitchen with all the toys, a perfect working air conditioner, and big tv with DVD. The view was unbelievable due to the fact, that the building is only approximately 100 feet from the ocean. Hobie-cats, kayaks and other water toys come free with the accommodations.

Mango-Reef restaurant is outstanding for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The staff is very friendly. We found out that RWI gives you the very best for your money compared to other hotels on Grace Bay, which are much more expensive, but not better. As far as we’re concerned, it was the best vacation we’ve ever had in the Caribbean. We'll come back to RWI next year.

4.0 stars A beautiful resort on a beautiful beach. Visited: March 2001

We have vacation on Turks and Caicos three times in the last 10 years. When we stayed at the Royal West Indies Resort this year, it was a delightful change from the resort we used to stay at. We like "small and quiet" over "big and busy" and that is what we found at RWI.

We had a studio suite that was more than comfortable. The room was large, had a small kitchenette, washer and dryer, and in-room safe for your valuables when you were out enjoying the sun, water and beach. For a facility, which had only been opened 5 months prior to our visit, the landscaping was outstanding and well kept. It was a joy to walk to the beach through the tropical gardens, and have beach chairs and umbrellas waiting for you on the beach. It was also nice that the chairs and umbrellas were not being picked up and put away at 5:00pm, which we have had done to us at other Caribbean Island resorts. The staff tried to help us with any questions, reservations, or rentals when we asked and I don't recall walking past anyone who did not have a nice greeting for us.

Because of its location, I would recommend the rental of a car during your visit—maybe not your whole vacation, but part of it. There are stores, restaurants, a casino, and great snorkeling close by, but you would not want to walk to some of these. Also, the street that RWI is located on does not have very many streetlights, if any.

The area around RWI had some construction noise. In March, there were three buildings completed with a fourth being constructed, along with construction on the property next to RWI. There was noise and dust from the building during the day, but they would stop around 4:00pm and we did not find the construction overly annoying. We would have breakfast at the Mango Reef, go to the beach for the day and by late afternoon, the work for the day would be done so we could enjoy the resort grounds without the construction.

As I stated above, small and quiet is what we look for in a resort and that is what we found at RWI. We liked it enough that we will be returning in March.

5.0 stars Enjoyed it immensely! Visited: March 2001

We visited Royal West Indies Resort with our family and friends. I was reading the reviews as we are leaving tomorrow to return here for a second time. The construction on the island is a sign of good things to come and should really not interfere with anyone's holiday unless you let it.

The staff is friendly and efficient, and the food at the restaurant is excellent. It will be hard to come by anywhere else that can beat their spectacular beach. Snorkeling trips just add to the fun! Can't wait to get there tomorrow!

1.0 stars A construction site! Visited: March 2001

During our stay there was a lot of construction work going on at Royal West Indies. A new apartment block was being built and there was a new resort in progress right next door. Unless you like vacationing on a construction site and being woken up when they start at 7am, don't go to RWI. We only lasted two nights!

Also, another resort is nearby and we could hear bingo and music, although the noise wasn't too intrusive and didn't go on too late.

The east end of Grace Bay was the most built up and there was further construction going on at other resorts besides RWI. The Ports of Call serves a very good breakfast and is within walking distance of RWI, but it is by the road and there is a constant stream of trucks going by. It was not exactly quiet in paradise!

3.0 stars Beautiful resort that will improve with time. Visited: March 2001

The Royal West Indies Resort consists of three buildings (a fourth is under construction during our stay). The resort is situated facing the sunset on exotic Grace Bay. Although the property is extremely attractive, it is impacted by the startling growth of the island, namely the construction on site and adjoining the property. The work began at 6:30 every morning and continued until 4 pm. Aside from the noise, you will have to tolerate a light, but persistent amount of construction dust if it is still going on during your stay. Most days, it was just too noisy for us to hang out at the pool. If you coordinated eating lunch at poolside at the same time the workers ate lunch, you could enjoy a noise-free period. Of course, this is a short-term problem, but you might want to check the construction status before you go. Please note: There was considerable construction elsewhere on the island, as well.

Our room was comfortable and we would have enjoyed using the balcony more often had the construction noise and dust not chased us indoors. There was, however, a curious shortage of furniture to accommodate the couple we traveled with. The second bedroom had two small, low dressers. One large dresser would have been more suitable. Also, one bedroom had only one bedside lamp. Additional wall hangings would have also helped to add some charm to the unit. The individual owners furnished each unit, so there was nothing the management could do to accommodate our decorating ideas.

The grounds are lushly and beautifully landscaped and it was a pleasure to walk amongst the tropical plantings each day. The beach is exceptional and was a welcome retreat.

There are numerous restaurants within walking distance along the beach or road. Beware of walking along the road at night, as it was not well lit and was a bit rough.

Another possible concern was the proximity to an adjacent resort adjacent to the east that had amplified rock music and/or a show with music and amplified talking shattering the tranquility at night. This was limited to evenings and was prior to 10pm.

Outstanding dining can be enjoyed at the Mango Reef, both in quality and presentation.

The construction not withstanding, we enjoyed our stay at RWI and will consider a future return when it will be a true 4-star property.
