These steps were built in the 1700s, by the Danes. Historians believe these steps, along with many others that rise from the Charlotte Amalie harbor, were actually a result of bad planning on the part of Danish engineers who had never been to St. Thomas. The bricks used to build the steps were brought from Denmark in the hulls of sailing ships. (The 99 steps are in truth 103 steps.) At the top of the steps sits an old Fort (now part of the Inn at Blackbeard's). The view is the reason it was built there, so Danish soldiers could keep an eye out for enemy ships and protect Fort Christian from attacks. It is a National Historic Site and considered to be one of the oldest buildings on St. Thomas. The name Blackbeard refers to Edward Teach, a pirate who is said to have frequented the islands and spent quite a bit of time around the tower. (close)

Located on Bluebeards Hill, east of Charlotte Amalie, is Bluebeard's Castle. Local stories state that the structure was built by the pirate Bluebeard for his love Mercedita, however this is no more than a story. The Danes actually built the stone tower around 1689 as a supplementary watchtower to aid the defenses of Fort Christian. It was called Frederik's Fort when originally constructed and is actually on the site of a fortification the first colonists to the island had started. Today the tower is incorporated into Bluebeard's Castle Hotel. Also incorporated into the hotel is Frederiksberg. In 1818 the colonial government sold the watchtower and surrounding lands to a merchant and in the 1820's the large residence of Frederiksberg was constructed. While the hotel has changed it somewhat; the columned portico, staircase and parts of the interior retain the original look. Part of the interior is used as the hotel lobby. (close)

On weekends (and sometimes during the week in high season) vendors offer refreshments. In spite of it's lack of amenities, a large sandy beach and usually calm seas offer a perfect spot to swim, relax and soak up the sun. LOCATION: ON THE WEST END, ACCROSS FROM THE ENTRANCE TO THE REICHOLD CENTER FOR THE ARTS. Near the campus of the University of the Virgin Islands, this peaceful spot livens up on the weekend and often has tasty local food available from vendors. Caneel Bay is the home of seven fabulous beaches at St. John's first resort established by Laurance Rockefeller in the 1950's. The public can hike to Honeymoon Beach or can check-in to become a guest of the main Caneel beach. Swimming: pretty calm Food/Refreshments: Yes Water Sports Center: Yes Accessibility: Taxi, Car, Trail Snorkeling: Not brilliant Amenities: Restroom/Hotel Kid Friendly: Yes Taxi Availability: Usually at hotel, or Call Dispatcher Honeymoon Beach & Scott Beach are 2 of 7 beaches at the Caneel Bay Resort. You can drive to the visitor's parking lot at Caneel Bay (you have to check in with the guard if he is there and tell him you are a day visitor). Technically, guests are just supposed to be able to access Caneel Bay and Honeymoon Beaches but legally you can be on any of the beaches (where it gets tricky is that the property accessing the beach is resort private property). If you walk straight on the path after parking, you will come to Caneel Bay Beach. This is also where you can eat lunch or have drinks. Day visitors can use the beach but they are not supposed to use the guest chaises. If you turn left on the pathway BEFORE you come to the beach restaurant and walk about 1 mile (straight, easy walk), you will come to Honeymoon Beach. If you snorkel around the reef on the left end of Honeymoon, you'll come to Salomon Beach (very short distance). To get to Scott Beach, it's quite a ways on your right (again on the path before you reach Caneel Beach)--maybe 2 miles. Plus no kids under 12 are allowed on Scott or Paradise Beach. The other National Park Beaches, outside of the Caneel property, which are as nice or nicer include Hawksnest, Trunk, Cinnamon, Little Cinnamon, Gibney, Francis, Jumbie, Leinster, Waterlemon Cay to name a few. The beach is rocky but generally appealing to outdoor types. Bring the kids and the dogs. Taxis are usually not available. Twenty-four sportfishing world records have been set from the Virgin Islands, for fish ranging from mega blue marlin to swift swimming wahoo. The hot spot for billfish - blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish - is the world-famous North Drop, which you can easily access from St. Thomas or St. John. A short ride offshore St. Croix, the billfish bite best off Lang Bank, another deep drop-off where cool waters and ocean currents bring a bevy of bait fish, especially June through October. During the winter months, dolphin, wahoo and tuna keep the action on the drop-offs hopping. Closer inshore, you'll find kingfish, mackerel, bonefish, tarpon, amberjack, grouper and snappers in Virgin waters all year long. Captains and mates armed with local knowledge can guide you to the hot spots aboard a sportfishing charter. Both half day and full day trips are available. Half day trips are usually scheduled from 8 am to 12 Noon and 1 pm to 5 pm and focus on inshore fishing. Full day trips can be of two types. On the first type, usually 8 am to 4 pm, you troll slowly out to the drop-off, then fish for marlin once there. For the second type of full day trip, generally 8 am to 5 pm, your captain will head full throttle for the drop with marlin as the single-minded pursuit. (close)

The Virgin Islands National Park on St. John is well developed which makes exploring the historical sites, beaches and trails easy and rewarding. The Virgin Islands National Park encompasses underwater areas that teem with marine life, gorgeous white sand beaches and acres of lush green forests. The land and sea are not the only treasures in the park, there are also historical treasures including Pre-Columbian Amerindian settlements, Danish colonial sugar plantation ruins, forts and a marine railway. Civilizations lived on St. John long before the Europeans arrived to the region, as evidenced by the petroglyphs, or rock carvings left by the Taino people. These carvings are found especially on the Reef Bay hiking trail. These people were all but driven into extinction by Europeans in the 17th century seeking new territories as colonial properties. Much of the vegetation on the Island is second generation growth. Almost the entire Island was clear-cut to make way for sugar cane production during the colonial era. Some native species like the tyre palm remain, but much growth today are introduced species. In 1962, Congress expanded the boundary of Virgin Islands National Park to include 5,650 acres of submerged lands to protect and preserve the beautiful coral gardens and seascapes. Today, the Park conducts research, and has developed policies and practices aimed at protecting the fragile coral reef systems. Virgin Islands Coral Reef Monument includes federal submerged lands within the 3 mile belt off of the island of St. John. These waters support a diverse and complex system of coral reefs, and other ecosystems such as shoreline mangrove forests and seagrass beds that contribute to their health and survival. The need to protect reefs from further degradation led to a Presidential Proclamation establishing the Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument in January 2001. Hurricane Hole is the only area of the Monument accessible by land. (close)

After that, swim towards the small Waterlemon Cay just off the edge of the trail- it is about a 10 minute swim out if the tide is strong. Not for beginner swimmers! The wild life is fantastic here. You will come across many groups of wild but gentle donkeys as you hike towards the water, then when you get in to snorkel- sea turtles, eagle rays, reef fish, nurse sharks, and more. Just swim around the tiny rocky cay to see it all. No place to rest as it is all coral and rocks, but we took a swim noodle to float under our kids' arms when they needed a break. Bring plenty of water and leave it on the shore for your return- you will be thirsty but very glad you went. (close)
