These steps were built in the 1700s, by the Danes. Historians believe these steps, along with many others that rise from the Charlotte Amalie harbor, were actually a result of bad planning on the part of Danish engineers who had never been to St. Thomas. The bricks used to build the steps were brought from Denmark in the hulls of sailing ships. (The 99 steps are in truth 103 steps.) At the top of the steps sits an old Fort (now part of the Inn at Blackbeard's). The view is the reason it was built there, so Danish soldiers could keep an eye out for enemy ships and protect Fort Christian from attacks. It is a National Historic Site and considered to be one of the oldest buildings on St. Thomas. The name Blackbeard refers to Edward Teach, a pirate who is said to have frequented the islands and spent quite a bit of time around the tower. (close)

Local stories state that the structure was built by the pirate Bluebeard for his love Mercedita, however this is no more than a story. The Danes actually built the stone tower around 1689 as a supplementary watchtower to aid the defenses of Fort Christian. It was called Frederik's Fort when originally constructed and is actually on the site of a fortification the first colonists to the island had started. Today the tower is incorporated into Bluebeard's Castle Hotel. Also incorporated into the hotel is Frederiksberg. In 1818 the colonial government sold the watchtower and surrounding lands to a merchant and in the 1820's the large residence of Frederiksberg was constructed. While the hotel has changed it somewhat; the columned portico, staircase and parts of the interior retain the original look. Part of the interior is used as the hotel lobby. (close)

On weekends (and sometimes during the week in high season) vendors offer refreshments. In spite of it's lack of amenities, a large sandy beach and usually calm seas offer a perfect spot to swim, relax and soak up the sun. LOCATION: ON THE WEST END, ACCROSS FROM THE ENTRANCE TO THE REICHOLD CENTER FOR THE ARTS. Near the campus of the University of the Virgin Islands, this peaceful spot livens up on the weekend and often has tasty local food available from vendors. Caneel Bay is the home of seven fabulous beaches at St. John's first resort established by Laurance Rockefeller in the 1950's. The public can hike to Honeymoon Beach or can check-in to become a guest of the main Caneel beach. Swimming: pretty calm Food/Refreshments: Yes Water Sports Center: Yes Accessibility: Taxi, Car, Trail Snorkeling: Not brilliant Amenities: Restroom/Hotel Kid Friendly: Yes Taxi Availability: Usually at hotel, or Call Dispatcher Honeymoon Beach & Scott Beach are 2 of 7 beaches at the Caneel Bay Resort. You can drive to the visitor's parking lot at Caneel Bay (you have to check in with the guard if he is there and tell him you are a day visitor). Technically, guests are just supposed to be able to access Caneel Bay and Honeymoon Beaches but legally you can be on any of the beaches (where it gets tricky is that the property accessing the beach is resort private property). If you walk straight on the path after parking, you will come to Caneel Bay Beach. This is also where you can eat lunch or have drinks. Day visitors can use the beach but they are not supposed to use the guest chaises. If you turn left on the pathway BEFORE you come to the beach restaurant and walk about 1 mile (straight, easy walk), you will come to Honeymoon Beach. If you snorkel around the reef on the left end of Honeymoon, you'll come to Salomon Beach (very short distance). To get to Scott Beach, it's quite a ways on your right (again on the path before you reach Caneel Beach)--maybe 2 miles. Plus no kids under 12 are allowed on Scott or Paradise Beach. The other National Park Beaches, outside of the Caneel property, which are as nice or nicer include Hawksnest, Trunk, Cinnamon, Little Cinnamon, Gibney, Francis, Jumbie, Leinster, Waterlemon Cay to name a few.
