There were limited amenities - it was not worth the price. Visited: July 2007
Posted by myoung6923
This resort was not a five-star as was advertised. We found that the descriptions were, at best, very misleading as to the amenities.

The two pools (which were more than a short walk apart) were very small (tiny was more like it), and not at all what we had expected.

They had claimed there were three restaurants - well, not really. The Mermaid and the Grotto are just beachside grills. While open for lunch and breakfast (mermaid only), they were simple menus of burgers and dogs and such.

The buffet breakfasts at the Mermaid suffered from very slow service, and the food constantly ran out and was only restocked upon request - and after more considerable waiting.

The Terrace and the Brass Parrot were actually the same place - which, while the food was very good, was extremely overpriced, stuffy with a snooty air about it and also had a very limited menu.

Service is what makes a resort "great". Visited: July 2006
Posted by kyjd75
"Great" is the word I would use to describe the Buccaneer. Some who like posh, luxury rooms of glitter might be disappointed with the Buccaneer. However, if fabulous service, a beautiful campus, and all the facilities one could ever need are important, then the Buccaneer is number one in our book.

Everyone at the Buccaneer seemed obsessed with making our stay as perfect as it possibly could be. Not only did they handle every request we made with speed, accuracy and grace, it seemed that they could almost read our minds and provide whatever we wanted without asking! Now that is good service.

Our room was modern, comfortable and clean--but not a luxury suite (fair enough--we asked for the cheapest room they had). The tennis center was terrific. Our son played almost every day, and the resident pro was excellent at finding him matches to play. The beaches were nice, and very uncrowded. The food was good, the breakfast buffet outstanding!

In summary, we loved the place, and hope to return next year for a longer stay.

Our 25th wedding anniversary party was fantastic. Visited: April 2005
Posted by stxtw
I would highly recommend The Buccaneer for anyone planning a tropical wedding. We wanted somewhere special for our big 25th party, especially since we eloped. In the Caribbean, the quality of food and service sometimes can be unpredictable.

A dozen friends came to join us - including some who stayed at the resort - and were given a very good group rate. They were greeted so graciously and received welcoming rum punch, champagne in the room, and beautiful accommodations with French doors facing the sea.

The party could not have been more elegant. It was the wedding we never had, complete with a luscious tiered wedding cake decorated with tropical flowers. The service and food were far beyond our expectations--one guest who has an apartment in New York said it was the nicest dinner party he had been to in years.

The resort's setting was lovely, and we will always treasure our photographs taken on the beach and beautifully landscaped grounds with 18th century structures from the resort's plantation past.

The main building had a totally remodeled air conditioned private dining room, The Brass Parrot, where our party was held. It was surrounded by terraces facing the sea and the Christiansted harbor. It was a movie-fantasy backdrop as the sun set during cocktails with red streaks through the sky.

People are still talking about our party two months later, and one friend who stayed at The Buccaneer has already made reservations to return this summer.

I didn't like it Visited: March 2005
Posted by x3w4q1
I feel awkward giving 2 stars to the property that everyone else gave 5 stars, but I really didn't like it.

The Great House building, where I stayed, felt like a cheap motel. The rooms lacked decoration and felt cheap. The grounds felt like a small abandoned town, so there wasn't anywhere to go out at night. After the sunset I could either sit in the lobby or in my room.

They advertise 4 restaurants, but dinner was only served at "The Terrace", where they required reservations. If reservations were not available, then the room service was the only option, and I already mentioned that it was not a nice room!

Out of 3 beaches, Whistler and Grotto beaches were not swimmable - they were rocky and coral reefs were everywhere. The Mermaid beach was awful - the water was not the Caribbean clear, it was muddy, grayish-brown in color and full or dirt and seaweed. The bottom was also covered in seaweed. The sand on the beach was not the dazzling white like in Cancun or Aruba, it was dirty gray, and roots of the trees protruded from the sand. The pools were tiny, and not swimmable: very deep - 7 to 12 feet in most areas!

I checked out early, because I didn't feel that $300 a night was worth paying for this! I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 because there were no major problems. However for a really perfect beach-and-sun vacation, either a family-friendly or an intensely romantic experience in the Virgin Islands area, I recommend the St.-Kitts Marriott instead (please see my review).

This was the worst resort I've ever stayed in. Visited: February 2005
Posted by franklinbusinessinc
We have stayed at luxury resorts in Hawaii, Cancun, Cabo, Miami, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Aruba, so our opinion is based on experience.

We booked our stay at The Buccaneer based on reviews in Fodor’s, Expedia, and Frommer’s. To our surprise, The Buccaneer lacked the posh, luxurious features that we expect from a top resort. Given the age of the building, we were willing to forgo the marble bathrooms that we are accustomed. But we were absolutely shocked at the service and amenities.

As far as service, the hotel staff did not seem to go out of their way to please the customers. It was amazing to me that as a guest, we could not receive lunch in the main hotel, nor could we get a dinner appetizer without a dinner reservation. I guess the Buccaneer does not need the revenue from selling food and beverages to offset its maintenance costs. We were so under whelmed that we requested to checkout early, but the Buccaneer refused to return any part of our deposit.

Besides the lack of food service, the amenities were not worth the price. The grounds were not lush - the grass was brown, the beach had just as much trash as sand, and the appearance of the room was closer to Motel 6 than the Ritz-Carlton price would suggest. And if you are looking for the beautiful pool that you see on the website, you should stay home. We thought many US city public pools were nicer than the Buccaneer’s pool.

As if the service and amenities were not bad enough, my experience was further shaped by problems with accounting. For some reason, I was charged $700 more than my actual bill. But unlike most hotels that would go out of their way to credit the charge, The Buccaneer required me, the customer, to jump through hoops for my credit. The accounting department really didn’t seem to care that their mistake was costing me money.

If you are looking for a resort that sounds better on paper than in person, the Buccaneer is for you. Personally, I would have not paid $100 a night for the accommodations, amenities, and service that The Buccaneer really offered. There are superior Caribbean resorts that will be happy to meet your needs for $400 a night!Buyer, beware!

The Buccaneer was beautiful, friendly and classy! Visited: January 2005
Posted by jimesb
The staff and management were very friendly and helpful. The grounds and views were beautiful - both seaward and inland. We were very impressed - so much so, we are going back this spring.

Also, we really loved St. Croix! The views were as stunning inland as they were of the surrounding sea.

This was an excellent property on a beautiful island. Visited: November 2004
Posted by ssmall1
We stayed for nine nights in November 2004. The rooms were excellent. The property was not crowded. The main beach was beautiful. There was good snorkeling off the main beach, also. The pool was small, but well kept with excellent view of the beach.

The service was good, especially the friendly drivers who repeatedly drove us to and from the main builing to and from our rooms by the beach. The children's program was good, though, you did need to book early as it filled up quickly.

The price of the accommodations and food was not inexpensive. However, we felt overall it was well worth it.

The island was friendly and clean. Tourists were not harassed. Shopping was good in Christiansted. The Cruzan Rum factory was interesting and fun.

We would highly recommend this island and especially this hotel to anyone who wants a relaxing holiday a little off the beaten path at a high quality hotel.

This was a beautiful, relaxing resort! Visited: June 2004
Posted by djhess311
My wife and I stayed at the Buccaneer for our honeymoon. The resort was beautiful, with amazing views, and was always quiet, which was important to us.

It had a great location...only two miles from the main city, yet it was secluded between a mountain and the ocean. They had great service, too! The food was great..the free breakfast really made it worth it.

Also, everything was spread out, so it never felt crowded (there were three separate beaches). It was one of Travel and Liesure's Top 25 in the Caribbean, and one of the Top 500 in the World, and I would agree to both of those.

I could go on forever listing what we liked...but if you're going to St. Croix, go to the Buccaneer...nothing else on the island compares.

The Buccaneer is beautiful, and uncrowded with excellent, friendly service. Visited: April 2004
Posted by 38kheder
We took our trip during April school vacation, and even though the resort was full to capacity, it wasn't crowded at all. The open air terrace where breakfast and dinner was served, overlooked the resort and the Harbor downtown - absolutely gorgeous views!

The service and quality of everything at the resort was five stars all the way. They staff couldn't do things fast enough for us.

We stayed right on the beach at the deluxe oceanfront rooms. There were two queen beds, plenty of closet space and a huge bathroom. Our room was overlooking the ocean and we just climbed over the low balcony wall and walked down to the beach.

It was a very kid-friendly resort. All the beach stuff (masks, fins, snorkels, mats and ocean kayaks) were free to guests and so was the kids club. My kids are nine and five and they had a ball.

Taxi service was pricy, the best bet would be to use the resort's shuttle to and from town, it was free minus tipping. Or do as we did, and rent a car. They drove on the left though, so be careful.

The resort was beautifully laid out and spread across a huge area, but very easy to get around and very uncrowded. It was a very relaxing, enjoyable vacation.

What I also liked about the resort was that it had a security gate to the property.

In addition, Mermaid Beach was the best beach and Grotto Beach (where the pool was located) was a little rocky, but a great place to sit under the palms and read. Whistle Beach was great for looking for seashells!

We can't wait to come back!

The Buccaneer is beautiful, peaceful and provides friendly service. Visited: November 2003
Posted by ejolaw1
My wife and I and our two daughters (ages 9 and 12) just returned from a six-day trip at the Buccaneer. We had a wonderful time.

When we arrived, we were surprised to see that the resort looked practically deserted. After getting settled in we determined that it really wasn't deserted, it was just that the resort was so large that you just didn't have that crowded feeling.

Our check in went very smoothly and we were greeted in the lobby by one of the owners, Elizabeth Armstrong, who personally offered us a welcome punch drink.

We stayed in the doubloons, which was at the far end of the resort right on Mermaid Beach. We had requested a ground level room (which we got). But upon checking into the room, we discovered that our water view was unfortunately obstructed by palm trees. We called the front desk and asked if we could be switched to another room. "No problem" was the reply and in less than 15 minutes we were moved.

The middle doubloons unit had the best views! The doubloon rooms were first rate: marble floors, granite counter tops, oversized bath and closet. If you choose a doubloon room, be prepared to take a long up-hill hike to the Main hotel/ Terrace restaurant for breakfast or rely on calling the front desk for the free van shuttle service. The free van service was always prompt and the drivers were all very nice and helpful.

The food at the restaurant was all very good. Our package included the free breakfast buffet (a $60.00 value every day). Dinner at the Terrace Restaurant afforded magnificient views across the water.

There was really no entertainment at the resort. In the evenings they had a piano player who was joined later by two other musicians. It was very laid back. If you are looking for a resort with a lot of activities, you will be disappointed here. If you are looking for a place to unwind and shed the stress of your normal day to day lives, then you will love it!

We took the boat trip to Buck Island to do some snorkeling and it was pretty disappointing (very few fish!). The resort supplied free snorkeling gear and kayaks. Our suggestion is that they should add windsurfing.

We had fun exploring the city of Christiansted which was only about 15 minutes from the resort, and the resort offered a shuttle to and from town. There were several waterfront restaurants there that were all very good.

I would also recommend the buffet at the Hotel on the Cay on Tuesday nights. Kids will love it. They had a steel band and entertainment.

Personal, friendly and caring service is what made this resort great. We plan on returning.

This is a great resort on St. Croix. Visited: September 2003

I just got back from the Buccaneer having stayed in the beachside doubloons which was the only way to go. They were on Mermaid Beach and next to the restaurant.

The rooms were absolutely fabulous (except for the tiny TV). But everything else made up for that. The main hotel was quite old, but it was very well maintained. The service was very good. I thought the rooms were on par with the best rooms in the Ritz-Carltons. It was a very beautiful and quiet resort.

Our wedding couldn't have been better! Visited: May 2003
Posted by jenazny
We were recently married at the Buccaneer. Selecting a vacation destination that would suit 35 people was one of the most intimidating things I've ever done.

The Buccaneer not only exceeded our expectations, but the expectations of every one of our guests…and some of them aren't the easiest to please. The service was amazing, the grounds were gorgeous and the food was phenomenal.

We spent our mornings visiting with everyone during a leisurely breakfast in the open-air terrace (which was included in our room price), and then wandered down to the Mermaid beach (our favorite of the three beaches on the resort).

Snorkel gear, kayaks and floating rafts were available to hotel guests at no charge. The beach was scattered with palm trees so we could sit in the shade or the sun…whichever suited us best.

It was an unexpected treat. Visited: November 2002
Posted by ivsys
We decided to stay at the Buccaneer despite plenty of nice-sounding accommodations on St. Croix that were cheaper. But, compared to prices on other islands it still seemed like a bargain. We were absolutely blown away by the Buccaneer.

We stayed in an oceanfront room which, in my opinion, was on par with a Ritz Carlton suite, but at a third the price. The resort was our kind of place – quiet, sophisticated, beautifully kept, with excellent service, amenities, and food. It was remote enough from town, yet close enough to town.

What we liked most was how the place was so spread out that it lacked the crowdedness of most resorts. We could easily find large deserted beaches to explore, or get a casual oceanside lunch or cocktail without ever waiting, and with genuinely friendly and excellent service. The place had all the amenities of a world class resort, but with an old fashioned proprietary elegance, instead of the corporate feel.

The only problem was that it was so comfortable here, that we never got to see any of the rest of the island. I prefer to island explore rather then stick to a resort, but we just couldn’t muster enough impetus to head away. The snorkeling was so good right outside our door, why schlep all of our stuff off somewhere else for the day. Maybe it’s just that I’m getting older …or maybe because I wanted to check my e-mail during the day. I don’t know, but we had a perfect time.

A peaceful, relaxing, and wonderful stay. Visited: August 2002
Posted by fdonnell
It was very quiet this time of year, and it made for a very relaxing, peaceful vacation. We stayed in an oceanfront room and were very happy with it. The bathroom was large with double sinks. There was a spacious patio with a great view of Mermaid beach and the sea. The maids provided ice and water twice a day. It was great how the rooms were spread throughout the resort, as it never felt crowded.

The breakfast buffet was wonderful and was included in the price. It was a rather steep uphill walk to breakfast, but it was great to have our room so close to the beach and pool.

We have two children, 7 and 9. The kids used the kids camp twice. They were a little disappointed to be the only kids one day, but most kids were back at school. The counselor was very safety conscience and attentive. Crab races in Christiansted and a sailing trip to Buck Island were activities our children really enjoyed.

The staff, in general, was very friendly and helpful. The Mermaid Beach pool was very nice with a view of the sea, and at times, we were the only ones in the pool. The jogging trail was a nice workout. The Grotto beach was rocky for swimming, but did have snorkeling, and it was beautiful to walk along the shore. The Mermaid beach was nice for swimming. Grotto and Whistle beach were good for shelling.

We golfed twice. Not being a serious golfer, I thought it was great since the view of the sea from the course was outstanding. It was quite dry, so a serious golfer might have preferred a more lush course.

If you love nature, peace and quiet, yet still want some activities (kayaking, snorkeling, swimming, sailing, tennis, golf) this resort is a great choice.

We just returned from the Buccaneer and we could not be more pleased with the hotel and the island of St. Croix. We could have stayed for another week!

The beach was beautiful and it was a pleasure to have the Buck Island trip (should not be missed) and breakfast included! The rooms were great in the main house with a breathtaking ocean view. I would suggest renting a car on the island - there are so many great restaurants you do not want to miss out!

Honeymoon paradise at the Buccaneer. Visited: August 2002
Posted by shenandoa
My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon at the Buccaneer. We stayed in one of the luxury ocean view rooms, with beautiful tiled floors, huge bath, and a nearly 180 degree view of the sea from our private patio.

We were so pleased to discover a small reef directly off the beach where we could snorkle and easily see the same fish and coral as our Buck Island trip. Mary, the concierge, was a joy with good advice and new ideas for us. She kept us busy with great offsite trips.

While the food at the Terrace was pricy, we found the breakfast buffet, included in our accomodations, to be outstanding, as was the service all around. Prices at the Mermaid on the beach were more reasonably priced sandwich fare, but eating a sandwich with a glass of wine is an option for a less expensive onsite dinner since it stays open until 6:00 pm.

The pool near Grotto beach was beautiful, with a terraced view from pool to beach. Four out of seven mornings we walked the jogging trail to spot mongoose or egrets, then snorkled or kayaked from the beach -- free equipment use for guests.

Overall, our stay was wonderful. The only thing really missing was a microwave.

The Buccaneer is one of the better Caribbean resorts. Visited: June 2002
Posted by halbarton
This was our first visit to St. Croix, and we were put off by the drive from the airport to the hotel because of the massive oil refinery along the south coast and by the not particularly attractive city of Christiansted. It was not our image of a tropical island. Our mood was not improved by the presence of a large dumpster sitting across from our beachside room.

Happily, things went uphill from that point. Our room was spacious and clean, and attractively, if sparsely, furnished. The large window had a nice view of Christiansted in the distance. The bathroom and closet were also oversize.

The staff and service were superior - cheerful, helpful and yet efficient. The concierge was extraordinary.

Breakfast was a buffet served in the Terrace restaurant and was included in our package. If you avoided the steam table scrambled eggs and the desiccated bacon, it was quite decent. We lunched at the Mermaid beachside restaurant, which had tasty food and good service.

Dinner was at the Terrace restaurant or the adjacent Brass Parrot, which was indoors. They shared identical menus and prices. Food was again well above the usual Caribbean standard.

We primarily swam and snorkeled Grotto Beach, because on the first day my wife came across the "house" barracuda, an impressive 5 to 6 footer. We never saw him again. Also, Grotto Beach had the beach level pool, which was well maintained but rather small. We walked over to the third beach, but thought the risk of injury due to the rocky entry was too high.

We took the Buck Island tour, and I am sorry to say that it was very disappointing. We had no complaint about the boat and crew; they did a nice job. Sadly though, the reef appeared to be dying and the fish life was unexpectedly sparse. We say this from the viewpoint of having having dived and snorkeled for over 40 years.

Why don't I give the Buccaneer five stars? My view was colored by my vacation at Jumby Bay, Antigua just two months previously, which I rated 5. I have already mentioned the dumpster, which was removed halfway through my visit. The Terrace was strangely located above the loading dock, and breakfast was accompanied by the aroma of diesel fumes from idling delivery trucks. The metal chairs at the Terrace grated annoyingly when moved on the tiled floor, like chalk on a blackboard. They were ittle things, but it lacked the "class" of Jumby Bay. So 4+ stars, but not 5.

A wonderful, romantic and beautiful experience. Visited: June 2002
Posted by windsorl
This was our second visit to the Buccaneer, the first was in 1986 for our honeymoon, and last month with our ten-year-old. The resort was as wonderful as it was 16 years ago.

It was a sprawling bright pink resort. It was not a high rise, but an old Danish Great House, complete with a windmill on the property (near our room), majestic views of Christiansted and the Caribbean, lush grounds - including the 18-hole golf course and three beaches.

They also offered a large variety of room types. The beachside rooms were very nice with incredible views, but were somewhat darker inside than the luxury ocean view room on the ridge that we had this visit. Our room was very spacious, with double sets of arched french doors which opened to a private stone terrace with magnificent views. We had a huge bathroom with a jacuzzi. It was very clean.

The Terrace restaurant/open air lounge was very romantic, with wonderful views. It was a great place to listen to steel bands in the evenings. There was good snorkeling right at the Mermaid Beach and off the Grotto Beach if you swam out to the reef. Rafts, kayaks, towels, chairs, and snorkel equipment were all available on the beach at no charge. Also, a visit to Buck Island is a must!

My only complaint would be the price of dinner at the Terrace. It was very expensive, and they offered no real children's menu when we were there except a hamburger, which was about $11.00.

Lunch at the Mermaid restaurant was excellent. We ate mostly in town or around the island. Our favorites were Styxx, in Christiansted, and Off the Wall, where you receive free shooters at sunset, and can swing in the hammock between palm trees and watch the sun go down as you wait for your food.

Our son's favorite activity was lassoing lizards (geckos there) and he learned to scuba dive. Be sure to explore all of the island.

Fabulous Visited: February 2002

My family and I just got back from the Buccaneer last night. We were there for eight days, and it was incredible! I am 15 years old, and have siblings that are of the ages 11 and 10. This was our first experience in the Caribbean, and we loved it!

We stayed in the ocean front rooms, on Mermaid Beach and it was well worthwhile. The beach was a matter of feet away, and it was just - well - perfect. Our rooms were quite roomy, especially the bathrooms (which, if anything, were too large).

Each of our rooms had two double beds, a window seat, refrigerator, television (many channels, a hit with my younger siblings), two sinks and a beautiful patio. Housekeeping was great, except for one day when they were a little late. As for other rooms, the Doubloons looked amazing and people we knew said the family suites were also perfect.

We were on the island for seven nights and we ate at the hotel four of them. The Terrace, which is located on an open-air porch, had the most sophisticated menu. The Brass Parrot, which is located inside, but with a fine view, was a little more casual. Both places had a kid's menu for children under 12 years old.

Also, you could go to either the Grotto Grill or the Mermaid for lunch. The Grotto served things like hamburgers and french fries at the pool. At the Mermaid, you had to sit down and there were more things like sandwiches and salads on the menu.

If you want a quick meal, go to the Grotto! Breakfast was served on the terrace every morning in the form of a buffet, and it was delicious! It had every kind of food you could imagine, and the price was included with the room. Make sure to go into town for dinner though. In my opinion, they had better food than the hotel. Styxx and Duggan's Reef were really good!

On a whole though, the service everywhere on the island was very slow. It took just about 1 and 1/2 hours for dinner, even for just chicken fingers and hot dogs. Be prepared!

There was a lot to do on St.Croix. At the Buccaneer, there was a golf course, tennis courts, a basketball court, running trail (poorly marked), two pools, and, of course, the beach! On the beach, you could rent floaty mats, kayaks, sunfishes (a boat) and snorkle equipment. Also, we went into town and went on a snorkling trip to Buck Island (it was awesome!), and my dad took my siblings parasailing. There was also great shopping in Christiansted.

Well, that's all I can think about for the moment, but I stress again that this place was beautiful, and I'm so sad I'm not there right now! The slow service would be my only complaint, but still go to the Buccaneer!

Clean, quiet and comfortable! Visited: June 2001
Posted by repoman108
If you are looking for a well run, clean and quiet resort on the calm waters of the Caribbean Sea, then the Buccaneer is for you.

The Buccaneer was a great place for our whole family, which includes a ten-, eight- and four-year old. The older guys really enjoyed the kids’ camp, which ran from 9:30am to 5:30pm and was run by a long timer named Jose. Jose is a big kid who takes the little kids around to hunt for geckos, jump off the doc, play ping-pong or go fishing and snorkeling (depending upon how many kids and their ages).

The tennis program featured open play, match play or drill clinics. When there weren't enough guests to play the pro mixes, my wife hooked up with some locals and played with them another day. I didn't play the Golf course but it looks good. Both of the beaches have a full array of water activities available for free (snorkeling equipment, kayaks, floats, noodles, life vests and a sunfish). Mermaid has a ping-pong table, volleyball net and basketball court. We even found enough room behind the beach to play a little baseball.

The room we had was an oceanfront connecting family suite on Mermaid Beach. The rooms themselves were not huge, but were clean and comfortable. The location was great as we just hopped off our patio and walked down a slight incline to the beach. It was very handy for my napping four-year-old. The double rooms were on the other side of Mermaid and look newer. If you are thinking of the family cottages, they looked very nice. They are located behind the oceanfront rooms next to the tennis courts, just below the great house. The two buildings closest the great house offer the best ocean views. I believe room 171,170 and rooms 169 and 168.

The restaurants were all fine. Mermaid had a beachside open-air restaurant for lunch, which featured a children’s menu—something that was lacking at the Terrace for dinner. The Grotto had burgers, hot dogs, fries and chicken sandwiches along with a barebones bar. The Grotto is poolside and convenient. The free breakfast at the Terrace was really nice. It was buffet-style with eggs, pancakes and French toast included.

The pool was nice and clean but a little smallish for such a large property. The beaches were very nice. Mermaid was great for swimming, sunning or kayaking and the Grotto for kayaking or snorkeling. The Grotto was pretty rocky.

In short, if you don't want a Ritz-Carlton type luxury resort or a busy all-inclusive, but do want a nice, clean and comfortable accommodations in an idyllic setting, then the Buccaneer is for you.
