5.0 stars A fabulous place. Visited: April 2001

We spent our Easter vacation at the Buccaneer and had a wonderful time. It’s an elegant but not fussy result. The friendly, gracious and helpful staff and a terrific beach with plenty of palm trees providing shade are among the many qualities.

Our ridge rooms were gorgeous and the spacious patios afforded a great view of the beach and Christiansted. Town is just a short drive and there are many wonderful restaurants there. (Our favorite was Tutto Bene.) Do the snorkel trip to Buck Island and the kayak trip on the Salt River.

If I could make one suggestion it would be for a more diverse water sports program—something to keep the teens occupied. All in all, we can't wait to return!

5.0 stars Beautiful room, beach and people! Visited: March 2001

Now that we're home and it's still snowing, we're glad we spent time at the Buccaneer. Memories of such a place can sustain us through the long winter. The staff balanced laid-back relaxation with activities in a casually elegant atmosphere.

We arrived tired, hot and admittedly cranky and they greeted us with tolerant, understanding smiles and cool rum punch. Our Ridge Room (#109) was very large, spotlessly clean and had double French doors, a private terrace, jetted bathtub and a great view of Mermaid Beach. Yes, it was up the hill, but we needed the exercise after eating so much excellent food at the buffet BK (included with room), burgers and beer at Grotto Grill and to-die-for Lobster Bisque soup, etc. at The Terrace.

Unfortunately, the water at Mermaid Beach was rough due to a major weather front to the north, so there was no snorkeling during our stay, but our 14-yr-old son loved playing in the waves. The staff was kind and helpful. The woman at the store brewed a special tea with a compress for my son's sunburn and the concierge arranged a made-to-order private day sail to Buck Island to our specific wishes, which included delicious boxed lunches made up of fried chicken, fruit, etc. Buck Island was a highlight and had great snorkeling despite reef damage. It was a beach of dreams with the softest, whitest sand I've ever seen and warm turquoise water.

If I could improve upon the Buccaneer at all, I would add a fantasy pool with slide for kids and a smoother, creamier Pina Colada recipe with a waiter/waitress to bring them to my beach chair; waiting in line at the bar was a drag. Overall, though, I would highly recommend The Buccaneer and would love to return.

4.0 stars Definitely a winner! Visited: February 2001

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Buccaneer. We have visited a number of islands, but had always stayed at a Westin or a Marriott, etc. Alas, that was not an option in St. Croix--we decided upon the Buccaneer. We were apprehensive, but the Buccaneer definitely exceeded our expectations.

Our room was in the oceanfront Doubloons section and it was wonderful. Book there if you can.

Breakfast on the terrace was lovely. Lunch at the Mermaid was convenient. And, we enjoyed several wonderful dinners on the terrace, too; the view at night was pretty spectacular.

The beach was very nice with plenty of shade available from the trees when you wanted to get out of the sun. The water was clear and turquoise, although I was disappointed in the "brown" sand. (Guess I thought it would be like the white sand you find in the Caymans, Aruba, etc.)

We talked with many guests who have come back to the Buccaneer year after year. That's about the best kind of praise a resort can have!

We would definitely recommend the Buccaneer, especially if you are looking for a quiet, peaceful holiday. It's not the place to stay if you are looking for on-site nightlife. While there were guests of all ages during our stay, it appeared as if families and senior citizens were in the majority.

The location is convenient to town and we enjoyed having several dinners in town. We sailed to Buck Island for snorkeling and suggest that you do that. And it's great to have a golf course on the property.

All in all, the Buccaneer is definitely a winner. (Now if the owners would just add a really spectacular pool with a swim-up bar, it would be pretty much paradise.)

I can't say enough in praise of The Buc! This is the way a hotel should be run. We were in the Doubloons, right at the water's edge. We sat on the front porch, watched the sun set and the lights of Christianstad begin to twinkle with a rum punch in hand; oooohhh...I get relaxed just thinking about it! We loved the way the accommodations are spread out over the property, with various folks sitting out on their patios and porches as you walk up the hill to the main house—it is so laid-back and friendly. When we were dressed for dinner we would call for a shuttle up the hill, and they were always quick and happy to give us a lift. We had absolutely no problems with our stay at The Buc and any questions we had were answered quickly and satisfactorily. I heartily recommend it!

5.0 stars Looking forward to a return trip next summer. Visited: July 2000

Our family just returned from a week stay, July 12-19, 2000 at The Buccaneer. The 300+ acres resort was the best kept on the island of St. Croix. We were met with smiles and waves from all staff, and all our requests for simple things like reserving a taxi, to scheduling a tour, were handled with a resounding "no problem!"

Our ocean view family cottage was kept extremely clean and well stocked (towels, soaps, ice and fresh drinking water) and was everything the brochures had said it would be.

The Terrace Restaurant was a little "pricey," but the food was very good, the nightly entertainment enjoyable, and the view of the town of Christiansted, sea and sunsets were unforgettable! The breakfast buffet each morning had some of the best "wake up" dining we've ever had.

Our 12 year old son participated in the "kids" program, and had a great time catching geckos, sampling sugar cane, building sand castles, and more.

In a nut shell, I would highly recommend The Buccaneer as a fantastic place to stay, and am already looking forward to a return trip next summer.

5.0 stars Top notch resort Visited: June 2000

Spent a week there from June 17 to 24. Having traveled to 7 other islands and stayed at very nice places, I can say that the Buccaneer is a top notch resort. The property is beautiful with a variety of accommodations - we stayed in the oceanfront rooms. The thing that really distinguished this resort is the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. There is a lot to do on site - multiple beaches, two pools, golf and a walking trail.

A reason that we chose the Buccaneer was because we have 2 children - age 12 and 10 - and hoped that they would meet others their age (which they did). The people involved with the kids program were great - even though we only participated one day - they hung around with the staff and had a great time.

The island itself is very nice as well - Christiansted is a clean city with some nice attractions and shopping. There are many good places to eat - Cheeseburgers in Paradise, Bombay Club, Indies and Tutu Bene. We drove around the island on a couple of days and felt comfortable everywhere we went. Buck Island is a must for snorkeling. All in all one of the best island vacations that we have had.

5.0 stars It was the best vacation of a life time! Visited: December 1969

When I went to St. Croix, I was so excited but once I got to the hotel I was even more astonished of the great facilties and especially the golf course. I cannot wait to return to The Buccaneer. I recommend it to people who like to relax and not be around so many people. The one drawback was that I stayed in room 401 which is the Frigate suite and could smell hamburger grease all day
