A much improved, fantastic hotel. Visited: June 2003 |

This was our fourth time at the Westin St. John since 1997, and they've made big improvements.
First of all, the room air conditioning was ice cold. They told me they had spent $1.2 million on AC system renovations, and it paid off. The grounds were immaculate, and the menu by the pool was greatly improved.
Sunset from the bar at ZoZo's was great. There was an unobstructed view of St. Thomas and of the sun setting in the west. They served the full menu from the bar, too, so you could enjoy the view while you ate! Asolare, as usual, was great, as was Stone Terrace - new to us. If the Lobster Pad Thai is on the menu at Asolare, get it! If there was Osso Buco on the menu at ZoZos, get that too!
Our trip was fantastic. The folks at Westin have taken a number of steps to improve the property - we can't wait to go back in 2005! |

Luxury resort prices sans the luxury…. Visited: June 2003 |

Attention newlyweds: If you are looking for a romantic honeymoon experience steer far away from the Westin St John. However, if you are the kind of person whose idea of a fun weekend outing is dodging the hordes at the mall, and your best vacation memories are from Disney world, Kings dominion or some other such nonsense, then this little sliver of Caribbean family paradise is for you. Dreaming of our honeymoon during a dreary suburban Washington D.C. winter, we had envisioned sipping cocktails on our balcony listening to the harmony of sailboat halyards matched with a gorgeous sunset view. Instead, upon our arrival in our beach front room we were greeted with the frenzied cacophony of a playground at recess as dozens of little tykes played on the aqua trampoline and inflatable iceberg directly off our room. My wife and I have stayed at a number of luxury hotels around the world. We are not bigwigs, far from it, but our jobs have allowed us the opportunity to experience some pretty great properties. The point is that we both know what a good hotel experience is, and the Westin was found lacking. Whether it was the local island attitude, the lack of attention to detail, the tip mongering by the staff, or just plain just not caring on the hotels part, when it came time to settle up the final (huge) bill, we did so with less than happy thoughts of money well spent. My list of negatives will not fit into the space allowed by this review, please feel free to email for further info. Bottom line: we will never stay at the Westin ST John again, indeed our best experiences on the island were spent away from the Westin.

My husband and I stayed at the Westin St. John in April for our honeymoon. We loved it and were impressed by the service and amenities. The garden was manicured daily, the beach was relaxing and beautiful, and the staff was very courteous. In addition to the hotel, St. John was wonderful. There were plenty of trails and beaches to explore. We will definitely return to St. John and the Westin on a regular basis. |

This trip was our third to St. John, and our second stay at the Westin. We enjoyed virtually everything about the resort.
The grounds were meticulously maintained with a gorgeous pool. While there were prettier beaches on the island, the Westin's was nice, but not ideal for snorkeling.
The staff was very pleasant and went out of their way to be accommodating. The food at the Beach Cafe and Snorkel's was fine, but we were disappointed with Chloe and Bernard's.
We stayed at Caneel Bay on our first trip, and found the Westin to be much nicer with friendlier staff and better restaurants.
Be sure to spend some time exploring the island, it is beautiful. |

As most people have mentioned, the beach at the resort was not that great. You will definitely want to rent a car and do some exploring. It was a small island and we visited every beach. The best snorkelling was out on Leister Cay.
The food at the resort was overpriced and not half as good as food elsewhere. So, do not eat here if you can help it. I couldn't get the air conditioning to get any cooler, I don't know if they have it controlled, but I like to sleep in the cold and it never quite got here.
The beauty of the island more than made up for any problems at the hote. And who spends all that much time in their room anyway? Next time, we would probably stay somewhere else closer to the nice beaches and better restaurants. Overall, though, it definitely beat out my house in the snow any day! |

A nice, family oriented resort on beautiful island. Visited: February 2003 |

My family, (wife, two teenage boys ages 13 & 15), spent Presidents week at the Westin.
The transfer from the St. Thomas Airport to the hotel was pretty smooth, in a relaxed Caribbean way. It was nice that their ferry took guests directly to their dock and handled your luggage. We were met with a drink and cool towel, and taken directly to our room quite efficiently.
Unfortunately, we had ordered a room with two double beds and a roll-away, but were given a poolside room with one kingsize bed (I had even called a few days before to confirm). After a few phone calls, we were reassigned a garden view room with a kingsize bed that was large enough to accommodate two roll-away beds.
It took a few more phones calls to have them send the second roll-away bed, and when they did it was a childs size. The staff was very pleasant and personable, but generally it took two or three phone calls to get the desired result.
I had made dinner reservations for the Beach Cafe a few days before we left New York for the first night. They did not have our reservation, but did accommodate us. It was "Caribbean Night" with a buffet that was only fair and entertainment that was a little hokey (nice for younger children).
The resort was quite full as many children were off from school this week. The first full day we used the Westin's beach and pool. After coming from the cold, snowy northeast, any beach and warm water was welcome, but this was disappointing.
Firstly, at 9:30 am, there were no lounges at the beach or pool (Many had been "reserved" with towels on them). Eventually we found some and moved them together well off the shoreline.
The water was quite full of seaweed and no beautiful coral or fish. There were floating trampolines and "hotdog" seesaws in the water, which was fun for the kids for awhile. Boats filled the harbor and it was also quite noisy with all the people.
The rest of the week we went to the other beaches on the island either by taxi or rental car. These were what you expect of the Caribbean; white sand, turquoise water, coral, multiple fish, turtles, stingrays, etc. I recommend Caneel, Hawksnest, Trunk (nice, but crowded), and Frances. The island was beautiful, so I strongly recommend you see it.
For food, we used the deli at the Westin for a Starbucks coffee and danish or cereal in the morning. A few times we had them make sandwiches to bring with us for lunch that were okay. We had dinner at Caneel (pricey, but very good), Wahoo (good), and Morgan's Mango (okay).
It was fine to stay at the Westin, but go to the other beaches (they were truly beautiful) and eat elsewhere. |

Beautiful landscape, but a few suggestions for improvement. Visited: December 2002 |

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon. We stayed 4 nights at the Westin in St. John and then 4 nights at the Westin in Puerto Rico. St. John is a very nice, cute town area. There’s enough to do during the day, although it is very quiet at night. If you go to St. John, plan on a lot of relaxing. The landscape at the St John Westin was beautiful. We had heard some negative things about the beach area, but we thought it was just fine.
However, our room was not all that impressive. When we first arrived, there was a clog in the drain outside our room, which caused a big puddle at the entrance of our room, and our movie channels didn't work. Also, on our second day, someone dropped a room service tray full of food and dishes outside our door, and it stayed there in a pile for over 24 hours. We had to call about three times before it was cleaned up.
The hotel prices are extremely expensive. I paid $7.50 for a magazine in the gift shop, and an average poolside lunch was about $35.00 for a couple of burgers and drinks. I've visited many resorts in the Caribbean, and this one was the priciest in terms of what you pay for basic items.
Your best bet is to eat dinner in town. We ate at the Wahoo and Fishtrap in town, both were good, but the Wahoo really impressed us. There was a beautiful view and great food. We also stopped by for drinks at Mooies, and had a great time talking to the owner and other locals. Everyone is extremely friendly.
Overall, I would say the hotel is average. When I return to St. John, I will rent a villa.

A very nice hotel with a not so great beach. Visited: September 2002 |

My wife and I just returned from our honeymoon at the Westin, and we thought it was a wonderful place. Once we got off the plane, the hotel had an office right in the airport that checked us in and took our baggage for us. I might add that the Caneel Bay Resort also had this service.
After they checked us in, they had a shuttle waiting right outside that took us to a Westin ferry boat which took us right to the hotel's beach and resort. There we were greeted with a rum punch, and they had a staff member show us to our room.
The place was spread out with rooms all over the grounds. The landscaping and flowers were like a country club setting. We had a garden view room and thought it was great. All the rooms had balconies or patios, and our room was what you would expect from the Westin. The hotel also had a workout facility, deli, restaurant, and beach bar on the premises.
The pool was huge and it was where most people seemed to be . I thought that the beach was not good at all. It seemed to be man-made. The sand was not soft, and the water was not the clear water you are used to in the Caribbean. The pool made up for it, though.
We rented a jeep from the hotel, and drove to the beaches on the island. All that we saw were very nice and what you would expect - clear water, soft sand and excellent snorkeling.
Don't go to the Westin if you just want a nice beach to hang out on. Caneel Bay Resort had much nicer beaches if that is your main concern. Taxis were everywhere if you don't want to rent a car. The taxis were more like shuttles, and could hold usually at least 15 people.
The USVI government had flat rates per person for anywhere you wanted to go in a taxi. For example, from the Westin into town, it was $3 per person. The fare to the other beaches on the island was much more, like $8 per person. The Westin also offered (for $65 per person) an unlimited water ferry pass from the Westin to St. Thomas. I would pass on this. The Westin ferry had very limited times. And you could catch a water ferry from the town on St. John for about $3 per person that was much faster and had times up until midnight.
St. Thomas had most of the shopping, restaurants, bars and crowds, and that was about it. All in all, the Westin was a great choice with great service and no beach. If you want a resort that probably doesn't have as good service and amenities, but nice beaches - go to Caneel Bay. If you want a beautiful resort with great rooms, excellent service and a great pool - come here. |

My husband and I stayed at the Westin St. John last June for our honeymoon. I must admit that our initial reaction upon arriving at the resort was one of disappointment, followed by a couple more.
The water was not blue and full of coral, as I have learned to expect from the Caribbean. We were further dismayed when told that instead of an oceanfront room, which we had requested and paid for in advance, we would be accommodated with a garden view room. Later on in the day, however, our oceanfront room became available and we moved there.
The room had a beautiful view and was quite comfortable and reasonably clean, although it was not up to the standards which I was expecting. The food was okay at all three restaurants, although the local eateries and restaurants on the island were much better.
My biggest complaint with the resort was the incredibly slow service. Our drinks by the pool and the beach would get to us devoid of any ice, and the food was often cold, since it took the servers up to 30-45 minutes to get them to us.
In spite of the negative aspects, the honeymoon was incredible, because we got to rest and relax and de-stress, but the overall experience with Westin was one of disappointment. I probably would not stay there again, since it just didn't measure up to my expectations.

My husband and me along with another couple stayed at the Westin for one week last summer and I still cannot believe the low level of service we received at such an expensive resort.
It started with our transfers from the airport where we and another group of people were put on a small public ferry. We had to take a 30-minute taxi to get to because we found out that Westin executives had come to this resort and they got to use the Westin ferry for their own private use. Our rooms were not even remotely located where we had been told they would be. No one wanted to listen to us at all politely complain and when we were asked at the end of our stay to let them know how satisfied we were with our stay, we spent 30 minutes talking to someone who said they would immediately make their supervisors aware of the situation, but never once were we apologized to for the horrible service.
I also had a housekeeper come into my locked room while I was in the shower and when my husband tried to ask her about it she just snapped at him and said she was unaware that I was there and she had to finish her job. It was very expensive and we had terrible service. I am very disappointed in the Westin based on my experience in St. John and would never recommend it.
Also we had to argue with the Westin to reimburse for the one-way transfer that we did not get to use on their private ferry. Other people who had argued with them were able to get both transfers reimbursed. I guess they were more aggressive. My husband had the opportunity to attend a medical conference at this resort this year but does not want to return there either.

This was my second visit to the Westin. I was here last year and simply fell in love with the place! In fact, we bought a week time share in the villas in May. We will be going back to paradise in a few weeks.
My only complaint is that they should lower their prices for food at the resort. The Beach Cafe restaurant is utterly ridiculous for the prices they charge for breakfast, not to mention dinner (that is why I can't give it five stars).
But all in all, it is truly a beautiful immaculate and calming place. |

The best perk about our stay at the Westin was the upgrade. We reserved a pool view room and upon our arrival were taken to a two bedroom villa. This included two bedrooms, three bathrooms, living and dining room, fully stocked kitchen and balcony. The villas, also, have their own private pool.
The in-room sitting service for children was also nice, however a book did disappear after the sitter's visit.
Upon arrival you are greeted with world class service. We felt that this service changed significantly for the remainder of our stay. It seemed as if the locals resent the tourists, but yet need them to sustain the economy. To be fair, I must say that this was not true for all the employees.
I was very disappointed in the beach. The sand and water are very dirty due to the boats and ferries that frequent that harbor. We chose to rent a jeep from the company renting a space in the Westin Hotel. During our week rental of the jeep, we had to trade out in the middle of the week, no child seats were available and we did not receive our free day rental as advertised.
Overall, it was a wonderful vacation since the island and natural beaches were fabulous. I will not stay at the Westin on our next trip. |

Oh my gosh! We loved St. John and the Westin. The Westin absolutely thought of everything. From the moment we landed in St. Thomas, the Westin attendants were right there at baggage claim ready to check us into our room and tagging our luggage while handing us ice cold water to enjoy.
They handled everything with our luggage. We never touched it again after we landed. We were then transported to the Westin Ferry and taken directly to the Westin docks (about 35 minutes).
We arrived and were immediately greeted and addressed by our names, handed rum punches and ice cold towels to dab our faces as we were escorted to a golf cart and taken to our room (luggage came in about 15-20 minutes).
The staff was friendly, and the Westin left no stone unturned in making our trip first class all the way.
Our room included a Heavenly Bed which was more comfortable than my own bed at home. The decor was simple and very nice and clean. The grounds were immaculate, and the activites you wanted to do while in St. John were all right there ready for your reservation at the hotel. We, however, chose to rent snorkle gear at the hotel, and rent a car and snorkle on our own as opposed to going out on a boat.
The car rental was especially helpful to have at our hotel. We rented a Jeep Wrangler and Samuari. Both were great, but we preferred the Wrangler.
The only dislikes I had at the Westin were the restaurant food (it was very over-priced for what we got) and the pool cushions (they stayed wet if you didn't get there before everyone else dripped on them).
I read a lot of comments about the man-made beach at the Westin, but it was not really all that bad...a little seaweed in the ocean, but not bad and a nice amenity to have.
The other beaches on St. John were much nicer, so don't hang out at the hotel the whole time. (Although, the Pain Killers were great at the hotel!)
There was so much else to see and do around the town. Cinnamon Bay was our favorite beach, and Waterlemon Cay was the best snorkling. Steon Terrace and Paninni Beach were our favorite restaurants....along with Chilly Billy's for breakfast and The beach bar and Rumbalaya's for a drink to watch the sun go down.
We will definitely return soon. I loved this place, and the Westin is our pick for our next visit. It was awesome! Have fun! |

You will love this place. Visited: January 2002 |

We just came back from an 8-day stay at the Westin St. John; what an incredible vacation. I was a little concerned before going due to conflicting reports, but let me assure you of one thing, you will love this place!
For starters, we chose to rent a car in St Thomas (from Budget) and bring it over by car ferry to St. John since we were staying for more than week. Your alternative is to take taxis. If you plan on exploring the many wonderful beaches, you will need a car. Many would have you believe a 4WD is required, but this is really nonsense since all of the roads are paved. Our car rental was $30/day roughly 1/2 of the $65+ charged on St. John. Car ferrys leaving from Red Hook to St. John every hour on most days and cost between $27-40 round-trip.
The resort itself is centrally located on St John and is less than a 5-minute drive to Cruz Bay, the commerce center of the island. The landscaping is wonderful and the grounds are immaculate. The pool and spas are spotless and are cleaned daily (if not more).
The rooms are very nice since they were refurbished in 1995 after Hurricane Marilyn. The Heavenly Bed was probably the most comfortable hotel bed I have ever stayed in and features 2, yes 2, down comforters. There is free Starbucks coffee for the bathroom coffee maker. All rooms have a mini-bar. We emptied ours and stocked it soda and beer from Starfish Market.
We didn't spend too much time at the Westin's beach. The sand I think is trucked in since it feels hard underneath. The Westin's beach is okay by most standards but pales in comparison to the others present on the island. We actually met several couples who hadn't ventured to the island’s other beaches; what a waste!
I highly recommend going to Hawksnest Beach (beautiful), Honeymoon Beach (a short hike from Cruz bay), Jumbie beach (an incredible secluded mini-beach). Snorkeling from the coast is excellent at Trunk Bay (do check the cruise ship schedule to find a day when only a few ships are St Thomas), Watermelon Cay, and Jumbie Beach.
For restaurants plan on going to Asolare at some point, the food is excellent and the views are incredible. Our favorite bar was Morgan's Mango, they had simply incredible mixed drinks. For food I recommend without reservation Morgan's Mango, Lime Inn, and Cafe Roma. The best bet for breakfast is Mongoose Junction.
My only complaint is that rooms lack a Do Not Disturb Sign, only a minor glitch though. Overall, St John is an incredible place to visit. The Westin is luxurious and romantic and the service is excellent. I'm sure you will enjoy your stay. |

When we stayed at the Westin we had reserved a pool view room, but were upgraded to an oceanfront room. It was fabulous to sit on our patio with drinks and watch the sun set. The grounds were beautiful and very well-kept. Maid service came twice a day, so the room was always clean (morning and turn down service). The beds were the most comfortable hotel beds I've ever slept on.
The beach was well maintained, but the water was not as clean and clear as the North Shore beaches. However, it was still a lot cleaner than any of the Eastern shore beaches in the Untied States.
There was plenty to do at the resort, with lots of planned activities and water sports. I barely saw anyone playing tennis (I brought my racquet and didn't play!) Iguana feeding at 4pm daily was neat!
Ate one meal at the Beach Cafe. While the food was good, and the service was outstanding, it wasn't "Islandy" enough for me. Prices were a bit higher than eating in town (our bill was about $90 for dinner, drinks and a shared dessert). We ate most of our meals in town.
Page, one of the bartenders at Snorkels will make you all sorts of fabulous drinks. Since we were on a budget, we stuck to drinking a lot of rum punch.
Make sure to rent a jeep and travel to the beaches. As great as the Westin Resort is, St. John is an island that needs to be explored.

This is a four-star hotel, and a five-star vacation. Visited: August 2001 |

Our stay at the Westin in St. John was incredible. We stayed in a pool view room which provided us with a great view of the spectacular pool (which was very large). It was also a relatively short walk to all of the restaurants and the beach. Although the hotel was very nice, we did not spend too much time there because the island had so much more to offer.
In the mornings we would go to the Starfish grocery store that was only a five-minute drive from the Westin. We would pick up yogurts and bagels to eat for breakfast (because the prices of breakfast at the hotel were outrageous) and we would buy cold-cuts and rolls to make sandwiches for lunch (so we could stay at the beach all day). The one day that we did eat breakfast and lunch at the Westin, the food was good but it was not worth the money.
During the day, we would usually go to the beach. The hotel did have a beach but it was only mediocre compared to other beaches on the island. We rented a car from the hotel and went to a few different beaches during our one-week stay. Our favorite beaches were Cinnamon Bay (the most beautiful we have ever seen) and Salt Pond Bay (we were the only people on the whole beach!).
For dinner, we would usually go into Cruz Bay. We ate at the hotel restaurant, The Beach Bar and Cafe, one night and my meal was delicious. But my parents could not say the same about their dinners. Also, the service was a little slow. In Cruz Bay, our favorite restraunts were the Fish Trap (for great seafood), Morgans Mango (they had the best coconut shrimp) and ZoZo's (for really good Italian food).
Overall, the hotel offered just what we wanted. Our only complaints were the beach, the slow service, and the dining at the Beach Bar. Everything else about the vacation was absolutely perfect! I can't wait to return to St. JOhn and the Westin! |

A Great Place To Stay! Visited: July 2001 |

We checked into the Westin at the airport. They took care of our luggage and put us on a shuttle bus to Charlotte Amalie to catch the ferry. That took us to the Westin’s own dock, where we were greeted by resort staff.
The Westin grounds were immaculate! We were impressed by the resort from the minute we stepped foot there until we left. Our villa had a nicely equipped kitchen, washer/dryer, nice bath with great water pressure and an in-room safe.
The Westin beach is nice white sand with very calm water in the bay, where there’s a huge floating trampoline. Cruz Bay Watersports has every water toy available for rent down on one side of the beach. This beach is made for lounging and playing and is not a good snorkelikng area.
We bought breakfast items at the Mango Deli and ate dinner at the Beach Café. The food was overpriced, but good. The only rude people we met our entire two weeks was at these two places. The two women working the Mango Deli were without a doubt the most uninspired employees ever! Within walking distance of the resort is Tropicale Gourmet Market—a nice, small grocery with a deli and fresh cooked foods. The best grocery is the Starfish Market. We took the obligatory time-share tour and collected our 75 Westin Sand Dollars and were provided with a free lunch from the Mango Deli.
I picked up a rental car from O’Conner Rental located in the lobby of the Westin for $65 per day for a Jeep Wrangler. It’s very convenient, as the vehicles are parked at the Westin. No worrying about returning the vehicle with gas either as they do not charge for that. We grilled grouper and Mahi-mahi from Starfish Market back at the villas, made daiquiris and enjoyed an evening with our villa neighbors.
Friday since we were going on a Limnos tour to Virgin Gorda and The Caves on Norman Island, I turned in the rental car early and saved the day’s rental fee. A Limnos power catamaran picked us up at the Westin dock at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, I spent the day at the Westin beach. Parasailed off Great Cruz Bay, and fed the resort iguanas. Sunday, we finished off our Starbucks coffee provided daily by the Westin, and had a late breakfast buffet at the Beach Café.
Checkout was a breeze. We caught the ferry to St. Thomas where we were staying for another week.

Third Time in Paradise Visited: June 2001 |

This was our third stay at the Westin, St. John, and it was wonderful. They've added some poolside services that were nice touches, such as additional bartenders, mid-morning fruit and "spritzes" of water when it gets hot in the afternoon. New deck chairs as well. Other postings referred to landscaping around the pool--it's done, and it's beautiful, so don't be scared off.
There’s a great restaurant in town, ZoZo's, which is new on the island since our last visit. Asolare is also wonderful, as usual. The hotel's spa is a new addition, but a disappointment. Don't waste the money. Can't wait to plan our fourth trip to the Westin and to St. John!

I would recommend this resort in St.John to anyone that wants to get relaxation in a peaceful and quite resort. It is great from the time you arrive at the reception area. The staff is nice, friendly and very helpful. This resorts makes you want to go in and live there forever.
It is great and everything, but, for a resort so nice it shoud be an all-inclusive resort where the rate for the room includes meals as well, but that is okay. I would recommend this resort anyway. I love it. It is guaranteed that you would love it and I can't wait to go back. |

A nice place to visit. Visited: March 2001 |

My husband and I returned after 6 days/5 nights at the Westin St. John. It was such a
beautiful view arriving by ferry in the afternoon, which was a nice first impression. Upon
checking in (done quickly) a waiter came over with a tray full of complimentary rum
punch. He also had a bottle of rum, so you could have it stronger if you liked!
Our Gardenview Room was up the hillside in the back of the property. We did feel like
mountain goats after a few days! Our room was very spacious. The "heavenly bed" was
really nice, as was the complimentary Starbucks coffee and coffee pot in the room.
The landscaping was just beautiful. In the pool area some dead looking palm trees were
being removed and replaced, which made those areas off limits. I would of thought this
kind of work should have been done before the busy spring break season.
Toward the end of the week a lot more kids arrived and the pool area, as large as it is, got
crowded. We did go to the beach a few days. I didn't appreciate having to pay $8 to rent
an umbrella on the beach when they are readily available on pool deck at no charge. The
beach, however, was clean. My big complaint was the fact that the restrooms were in one
central location. If you were at the pool, pool bar or beach they were not very close.
Happy hour was from 4-6 p.m. at the Snorkel Pool Bar and sometimes it was a little hard
to get waited on. Also, some bartenders had attitudes and forgot how to smile.
The food was definitely not worth the price. We did well going to the Mango Deli to get
bagels and juice in the morning. Otherwise, eating in town was the way to go. We did
enjoy ourselves and saw some very beautiful areas.
