4.0 stars It was nice for a few nights in town for St. Thomas. Visited: May 2009

The room (including bathroom) was spacious and clean, and felt like you were in an old island manor.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The grounds were beautiful and relaxing. They had three pools (though it was odd if tour groups were coming through).

The bar was only open during the day, which was unfortunate. The view was beautiful (especially for fireworks over the harbour).

The top of 99 Steps (to use during the day only) made it convenient for shopping and ferry transport (go to Glady's Cafe for breakfast). Tour the grounds for free as part of your stay.

We would go back if stopping in St. Thomas before hitting other islands again.

3.0 stars The front desk clerks were very friendly. Visited: September 2004

The rooms were okay, they could use a little renovating.

But the front desk clerks and the maintenance crew were very friendly and always made sure our needs were taken care of. The only problems we had in our rooms were the roaches and the stained sheets.

4.0 stars We had a great stay! Visited: May 2003

I was fortunate enough to travel with a couple of friends to St. Thomas and stay at Blackbeard's Castle.

The people were very friendly, the rooms were exquisite, and the dining room (open every night) was impeccable with some of the best food I've ever had the pleasure to enjoy.

After a week here, upon checkout, I decided that the only two things I had to complain about was no soap in my room (only on the first night), and the a/c in my room was a bit loud. Other than that, Gerhard and the staff were delightful.

I would, and will, stay here again. Since it was my first time in St. Thomas, I feel fortunate that I stayed at a place that was so filled with the tropical ambience I was hoping for.

1.0 stars Uncomfortable, overpriced, inconvenient. Visited: September 2002

The restaurant was far too expensive for the average person ... there is no lunch service and as often as not it did not open for evening meals. The view was spectacular. However, the walk down to Charlotte Amalie, located directly below, involves scaling three very long flights of steps (approximately 200) and two steeply angled blacktop areas which makes it's use prohibitive for all but the most physically fit. Cabs can be used but the costs mount up quickly.

Despite what the travel books say, all rooms are not spacious. Perhaps ours was not typical but it was approximately 12 ft. by 16 ft., had a small refrigerator that sat on the floor, one wicker cabinet that held a tv, one chair, end table and a shower (no tub). The bed was extremely large -- larger than California king and filled most of the floor space. The air-conditioner just barely kept the room cool and the television reception was very poor. Only one other room besides ours was occupied the five days we were there. I feel that we were overcharged at $135 a night.

Suggestion for Management: Have snack foods, fruits, etc. available for sale on premises (in office). Since the staff has very little to do why not have a golf cart or two to transport guests up and down the hill. It would make an amazing difference in convenience for guests by linking your facility with the shopping district.

The Surrounding Area: We were warned by many responsible locals to not leave the gated hotel area at night as our lives would be in danger. Shopping: For the best prices on gold and other jewelry -- ask for Monica at Beverly's. For the best food at the best prices, it would have to be Cuzzins. Their menu has seafood to Cajun to Meatloaf (the special the night were there...and the best I've ever had). Do not order the Cobb Salad at the Green House as the meat is chopped Buddig. However, right next door is a Computer cafe with wonderful cappacino, sweet rolls, a library of paperbacks on a shelf on one wall ("Take one, Leave one") and a very friendly fellow that makes one feel at home and comfortable.
